  2. American Official History is a rather curious version of the truth of events. Follow Reveres military career as a “Master of Artillery” at the assault on Ft George at the mouth of the Penobscot River and you will see why he was forgotten until revived as a propaganda figure just before the civil war. Let’s just say Revere was all flash and no substance. It is the same kind of history that celebrates the gallantry of the brave Texans who died at the Alamo for freedom….the freedom to introduce slavery in a land that had already banned it.

    • To say nothing of the fact that the Brits captured him while he was running around warning people and he told them that they might as well go back because the country was warned and ready for the coming fight.

    • I forget the name of the man who did most of the warning but Longfellow chose Revere because his name was easier to make the poem flow off the tongue.

  3. Inspiring. Longfellow’s intention and Prager’s.
    One tiny correction:
    Paul Revere’s statue stands in the Boston Common. Maybe there’s a Boston Plaza in Mexico or Brazil. Right next to the stone stake where Jews were burned to death if they were caught being Jews.

    We made our way here, via Amsterdam, instead. British Empire – at this end, at least – was more accommodating. So it’s the Boston Common and Lexington Green.

    • The poem is inspiring, almost as inspiring as the real story of what happened to the British column, but as Bl@ckbird said the poem was a propaganda move to get the north ready to defend the Union. Right now we have the anger at the left doing the same thing.
