  1. US Muslim Keith Ellison targets Democrat party leadership (gulfnews, Nov 15, 2016)
    http://gulfnews.com/news/americas/usa/us-elections-2016/democrats/us-muslim-keith-ellison-targets-democrat-party-leadership-1.1929502

“Washington: Keith Ellison, a US Muslim lawmaker and a supporter of Bernie Sanders, on Monday formally announced his bid to lead the battered Democratic Party, vowing to take it in a more liberal direction.

“I am proud to announce my candidacy for Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and if given the opportunity to serve, I will work tirelessly to make the Democratic Party an organization that brings us together and advances an agenda that improves people’s lives,” Ellison, 53, said in a statement.

Ellison, a member of the House of Representatives who hails from Minnesota, became the first Muslim elected to the US Congress in 2006.

He was one of the first supporters of Sanders, in October 2015, in the Vermont senator’s ultimately unsuccessful bid against Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primaries.

Clinton’s loss in the November 8 election to Republican tycoon Donald Trump has left the party reeling.

Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, was among the first to announce his support for Ellison to lead the DNC.

A number of other party heavyweights also back him, including the next Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer of New York.

“The Democratic Party needs to look itself in the mirror and work tirelessly to become once again the party that working people know will work for their interests,” Sanders wrote in launching a petition drive to support Ellison’s bid last week.”

    • The Democrats are determined to destroy their political party, this is fine since it will mean they won’t win elections for a couple of decades.

  2. German police unveil new anti-terrorist gear in the wake of deadly Islamist attacks (express, Nov 15, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/732341/ISIS-Islamic-State-Merkel-Germany-police-terrorist-terror-attack-Hamburg-migrant

“A GERMAN police force has received £3.9million worth of anti-terror protective equipment to curb fears of jihadi-style attacks.

Officers from the BFE, Germany’s special police unit, modelled their elaborate gear at a special press conference in the city.

Haenel assault rifles, heavy-duty ballistic protection helmets and body armour are items amongst the long-list of equipment that at least 70 police officers received to use in the event of a terrorist attack.

According to the German news website NDR.de, the decision to equip the police force with the expensive heavy-duty equipment was due to the ongoing threat posed by Islamic State.

The Survivor 1 armoured personal carrier, which will be used for anti-terror police operations, can deal with chemical, nuclear and biological warfare agents in order to protect officers inside the vehicle from exposure.

The heavy-duty SK4 rated protection gear can even stop a round fired from an AK-47 rifle.

Germany splashed the cash on the Hamburg’s police unit a few weeks after ISIS claimed responsibility for the stabbing of two people in Hamburg on October 16.

A few days later, German police officers were called to raid refugee centres and homes in Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia to find suspects who were involved in organised criminal actives such as bodily harm, blackmail, illegal restraint and harassment.

Security officers across the country continue to warn that Germans should expect a series of terror attacks from Islamic extremists in the near future.”

  3. Almost half of young offenders from black or ethnic minorities – highest rate since 2001 (express, Nov 15, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/732225/Half-young-offenders-black-ethnic-minorities-rate

“FORTY-SEVEN per cent of boys held in youth offender institutions are from a black or ethnic minority background, according to a watchdog’s survey.

The disclosure emerged in a report released by HM Inspectorate of Prisons, which has published an annual summary of responses from those in YOIs since 2001/2002.

Findings in 2015/16 showed the proportion of boys from a black or ethnic minority background was at 47per cent.

This was the highest rate recorded since 2001, the report said.

It added that those with experience of the local authority care system (37per cent), Muslim boys (22per cent), disabled youths (19per cent) and those from a gypsy, Romany or traveller background (7per cent) “continued to be disproportionately over-represented” across the YOI estate when compared with the population as a whole.

Survey findings for secure training centres, another type of custodial facility for children, showed the proportion from a black or minority ethnic background was 41per cent.

The number of children in custody fell by 53per cent between 2010-11 and 2015-16.

As of April, there were 906 under-18s being held in England and Wales.

The HMIP report, commissioned by the Youth Justice Board, analyses 12- to 18-year-olds’ perceptions of their experience in custody.

It found that nearly half of boys (46per cent) in YOIs reported feeling unsafe in custody at some point – the highest figure recorded through the surveys.

The proportion of boys with a job in their establishment had fallen significantly in the past 12 months to 16per cent, compared with 28per cent in 2014-15, the study added.

Chief inspector of prisons Peter Clarke said: “Over the past decade the number of children in custody has fallen by some 66per cent, but the perceptions of those that remain leave us with some worrying and difficult issues to consider.

“There are some particularly troubling findings in the areas of disproportionate over-representation (in terms of the characteristics of the children now being held in custody), safety, victimisation, respect and training.

“I hope these findings are taken seriously by those charged with developing and improving policy.”

Colin Allars, the chief executive of the Youth Justice Board, said: “Parts of this report are uncomfortable to read – trends around safety are concerning.

“We will use these findings to support our work with providers of custodial services to address the issues children and young people are telling us about.””

    • The left will start screaming to let some of them go so the prison population is in the same percentages as the general population.

  4. Anti-Muslim Hate Crimes Up 67 Percent, FBI Says (abcnews, Nov 15, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/US/hate-crime-rise-united-states-fbi-report/story?id=43529882

“Hate crimes in the United States ticked back up in 2015, after a 20-year low the year before, fueled in part by a 67 percent increase in crimes against Muslims, according to an FBI report released today.

Crimes against religious groups overall were up by 23 percent since 2014 and anti-black, white and LGBT incidents were all up last year as well. Most incidents — nearly 30 percent — in 2015 were anti-black crimes, the data show.

Crimes ran the gamut from simple assault to murder and rape.

In 2015, there were 257 anti-Muslim hate crimes, compared to 154 the year before, the data show. Overall hate crimes were up just under 7 percent, to 5,850 reported incidents.

The FBI publishes an annual compilation of bias-motivated incidents throughout the nation and the latest report was based on data submitted by 14,997 law enforcement agencies across the nation.

This was the first year that anti-Arab hate crime was recorded in the FBI numbers. There were 37 incidents and 48 victims. It was also the first year that crimes against Mormons, Sikhs, Buddhists, Eastern-Orthodox and Jehovah’s witnesses were broken down…”

  5. Russia Launches Offensive in Syria, Airstrikes Hit Aleppo (abcnews, Nov 15, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/agencies-food-production-syria-hits-record-low-43543238

“Russia announced a major air offensive in Syria on Tuesday as Syrian opposition activists reported the first airstrikes in three weeks in the besieged, rebel-held part of the northern city of Aleppo.

The offensive began hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump discussed Syria over the phone and agreed on the need to combine efforts in the fight against what the Kremlin called their No. 1 enemy — “international terrorism and extremism.”

U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration has been trying for months to negotiate a cease-fire in Aleppo, the epicenter of the war between President Bashar Assad and rebels fighting to topple him, some of whom receive U.S. aid. Al-Qaida’s local affiliate fights alongside the rebels, but the Islamic State group has no presence in Aleppo…”

    • Syria: Large scale Russian navy operation begins against anti gov. forces

Footage released on Tuesday shows Sukhoi Su-33 fighters taking off and landing from the Russian flagship aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov near the Syrian coast. The operation comes after Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that Russia launched a “large-scale” military operation against anti-government targets in Syria’s Homs and Idlib provinces.

    • Syria: Drone shows Russian missile strikes on IS as new offensive begins

Drone footage released by the Russian Ministry of Defence on Tuesday shows airstrikes targeting several positions of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria. The exact location of the strikes was not disclosed by the ministry.

The missiles were from both the advanced Kalibr missiles system, located on the Admiral Grigorovich frigate, and from the Bastion mobile coastal defence system.

    • McCain sends a warning to Trump: Don’t trust Putin

Sen. John McCain sent a message to President-elect Trump Tuesday over his promises to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin: Beware or be sorry.

The Arizona Republican said the new offensive launched by Russia in Syria this week shows Putin is working closely with Syrian President Bashar Assad in attacking rebel forces and the Syrian people.

Putin signaled Monday that he’s ready to work with Trump and improve relations, but McCain told the incoming president to watch his back. Hours after Trump and Putin spoke, Russia on Tuesday announced it was resuming bombing runs on the city of Aleppo using aircraft brought to the region by the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

“We should place as much faith in such statements as any other made by a former KGB agent who has plunged his country into tyranny, murdered his political opponents, invaded his neighbors, threatened America’s allies and attempted to undermine America’s elections,” McCain said in the statement.

McCain told Trump to look back at the Obama administration’s attempts to improve Russian relations during the first few years of the Democrats presidency and see how well that went.

With Trump seemingly poised to try another “reset” of relations with Russia, McCain said following through with that plan would lead to the deaths of Syrians.

“The Obama Administration’s last attempt at resetting relations with Russia culminated in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and military intervention in the Middle East,” McCain said. “At the very least, the price of another ‘reset’ would be complicity in Putin and Assad’s butchery of the Syrian people. That is an unacceptable price for a great nation. When America has been at its greatest, it is when we have stood on the side those fighting tyranny. That is where we must stand again.”

Lavrov reminds Kerry US has failed to separate opposition from terrorists

Lavrov stressed that the armed groups in eastern Aleppo and a so-called ‘Local Council’ in that part of the city refuse to cooperate

MOSCOW, November 14./TASS/. In a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reminded that Washington has failed to separate opposition from terrorists in Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“Russian Aerospace Forces and Syrian Air Forces have conducted no flights in that area for already four weeks, but Washington has failed to separate the units of ‘moderate’ opposition from terrorist groups, although it undertook commitment to do it within seven days in case the flights stop,” the ministry said.

The sides “agreed to continue bilateral expert consultations”.

As the situation in Syria was discussed, Lavrov stressed that the armed groups in eastern Aleppo and a so-called ‘Local Council’ in that part of the city refuse to cooperate in settling the situation.

“It was stated that Russia’s Aerospace Force and the Syrian Air Force have made no flights in that area for the past four weeks, while Washington has not separated ‘moderate’ opposition groups that enjoy its backing from terrorist factions, although it had pledged to do so within seven days following the suspension of Russian air raids,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. “It was agreed to go ahead with bilateral consultations to find ways of achieving normalization.”.

“Indian shelling has forced thousands of villagers from their homes in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, a Pakistani lawmaker said Tuesday.

The evacuation from villages in the Bhimber district came after seven Pakistani soldiers were killed by Indian shelling on Monday. The two sides have repeatedly traded fire in recent weeks across the Line of Control that divides the Himalayan region.

The nuclear-armed rivals each claim Kashmir in its entirety, and have fought two of their three wars over its fate.

Waqar Noor, a member of Kashmir’s Legislative Assembly, said authorities were making arrangements to accommodate thousands of villagers from Bhimber, who are currently sheltering in open fields or the homes of relatives…”

  7. Libyans Say Al-Qaida Leader Killed in Drone Strike (abcnews, Nov 15, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/libyans-al-qaida-leader-killed-drone-strike-43544459

“Libya’s official news agency says a senior al-Qaida leader has been killed in a drone strike in the country’s remote south.

LANA reports that Abu Talha al-Hassnawi, a senior member of al-Qaeda’s North African affiliate, was killed when a drone struck his house late Monday in Sabha. The agency says al-Hassnawi had fled from the northern coastal city of Sirte, where Libyan militias are battling IS with the help of U.S. airstrikes.

The agency says al-Hassnawi was previously a leading member of al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria, and was a leading recruiter of fighters heading there.”

    http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/thousands-of-children-dying-of-starvation-and-disease-in-northeast-nigeria-35217243.html?

“Thousands of young children have died of starvation and disease in Boko Haram-ravaged north-eastern Nigeria, Doctors Without Borders said, quoting a new survey which is forcing Nigerian officials to stop denying the crisis.

The Paris-based organisation hopes that official recognition of the situation in which “thousands are dying every day” will help bring urgent aid before older children also start dying, spokeswoman Natalie Roberts said.

    SHARE
A survey of two refugee camps in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri shows a quarter of the expected population of under-five children is missing, presumed dead, according to the organisation.

North-eastern Nigeria’s under-five mortality rates are more than double the threshold for declaring an emergency, Ms Roberts said.

Speaking on her return from north-eastern Borno state, the birthplace of Boko Haram’s Islamic uprising, she said the absence of young children was striking.

“We only saw older brothers and sisters. No toddlers are straddling their big sisters’ hips. No babies strapped to their mums’ backs. It’s as if they have just vanished,” Ms Roberts said…”

  9. Obama will not restrict drone strike ‘playbook’ before Trump takes office (guardian, Nov 15, 2016)
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/nov/15/obama-administration-drone-strikes-donald-trump?

“Barack Obama will not move to tighten the rules governing US drone strikes ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Guardian has learned.

Trump will inherit the apparatus for what Obama calls “targeted killing” – the so-called drones “playbook” formally known as the 22 May 2013 Presidential Policy Guidance or PPG – that has turned drone strikes into Obama’s signature counterterrorism tactic.

While the White House considers its standards for drone strikes to be scrupulous, much of the rest of the world considers them to represent an arbitrary, secret and dangerous apparatus of secret killing that Trump will soon have at his disposal. .

“Maybe on the left no one would believe that Trump has a steady hand, but Obama has normalized the idea that presidents get to have secret large-scale killing programs at their disposal,” said Naureen Shah of Amnesty International USA.

Begun under George W Bush, Obama vastly accelerated and codified drone strikes beyond officially declared war zones. Official estimates claim they have killed nearly 2,600 “terrorists”, though human rights activists consider that to be an undercount.

The footprint of the drones has become increasingly widespread, situated in airfields from Tunisia to Niger to Cameroon, they represent the outgrowth of a legal theory which was embraced by both presidents Bush and Obama, who considered the war on terrorism’s battlefield to be global.

For Obama, the drone has been a calibrated, restrained instrument of death, an alternative to grueling all-out war. Trump will now be the one capable of harnessing their power….”

  10. Populism Takes Over the World
America is just the latest country to see a resurgence of this volatile political movement.

When you first encounter the word “populism,” you might think it’s a close cousin of democracy, with all the positive connotations that go along with it. And for some, it may well seem a purer form of a process by which politicians harness the will of the majority.

But that’s only part of the picture. Populism—ostensibly a belief in the rights, wisdom, or virtues of the common people—often requires a bogeyman, be it an existing government, the supposed cultural elite, the media, or a particular ethnic, racial, or religious group.

As a form of horizontal political power, populism has been instrumental to legal, agrarian, and social reforms through the years. But it’s also played a starring role in the rise of demagogues and therefore some of the ugliest episodes in human history.

Republican Donald Trump’s electoral-college victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton last week was an unprecedented triumph of populism in the U.S.—one that leveraged feelings of victimization by a shrinking white majority who blame lost opportunity on U.S. President Barack Obama, the political establishment, wealthier urbanites, and immigration.

  11. Police make raids against suspected ‘IS’ supporters across 10 states in Germany (DW, Nov 15, 2016)
    http://www.dw.com/en/police-make-raids-against-suspected-is-supporters-across-10-states-in-germany/a-36395068

“Authorities have carried out more than 200 searches against suspected radical fundamentalists. German media reported that the targets were part of the well-known “True Religion” Salafist group.

A string of raids were carried out across Germany early on Tuesday morning against suspected “Islamic State” (IS) sympathizers. According to news agency DPA, the raids took place in more than 200 homes and offices across 10 federal states.

Authorities carried out searches targeting individuals belonging to the “True Religion” Salafist group (“Die wahre Religion”), who have stirred up controversy for passing out a particularly fundamentalist translation of the Koran.

The Interior Ministry confirmed the actions in a tweet, and announced a ban of the organization:…

Some 65 raids were carried out in the state of Hesse, 15 of them in the city of Frankfurt alone. Every one of the searches took place in Berlin or the former West.

alafism promotes a very strict interpretation of Islamic scripture and the use of Sharia law to impose order. The “True Religion” Salafists targeted in Tuesday’s raid have become infamous in Germany in recent years for disseminating copies of the Koran emblazoned with the slogan “Read It!” before they were banned from doing so in pedestrian zones by Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière.

A Twitter account appearing to represent the group claimed that “the Koran has been banned in Germany,” going on to say “we have delivered Allah’s message.”

De Maizière elaborated on the cause of the raids in a press conference later in the day. He said that this particular translation of the Koran was used to “spread messages of hate and anti-constitutional ideologies,” adding that “more than 140 young people have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join terrorist groups after participating in the ‘Read It!’ campaign.”

The raids came just one week after German authorities began a renewed crackdown on the country’s top Salafist ideologues, including 32-year old hate preacher Abu Walaa. Walaa, an Iraqi who has been in Germany since 2000, is suspected of supporting IS interests in Germany.”

    • Germany: Mosque frequented by suspected Salafi militants raided in Hamburg

Police in Hamburg raided the Masjid el Iman mosque believed to be frequented by supporters of the Salafist group ‘The True Religion’ (Die wahre Religion, DWR) on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, German police raided more than 200 mosques and homes across the country, targeting people they believe to be linked to The True Religion. According to German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, members of the group are accused of having recruited young people “to join terrorist groups” in Syria or Iraq. The government estimates that around 140 recruits have travelled abroad to fight after attending The True Religion events. Members of the group, also known as ‘Read Foundation’ (Lies Stiftung), reportedly approached people in pedestrian areas and handed out translations of the Quran.

    • Germany: Police raid suspected Salafi militants’ homes in Berlin

Police in Berlin raided 18 homes and offices believed to belong to supporters of the Salafist group ‘The True Religion’ (Die wahre Religion, DWR) on Tuesday. Footage shows the raid of an apartment in Moabit district of the German capital.

    • Germany: Interior Minister bans Islamist group ‘The True Religion’

A group with the name ‘The True Religion’ (Die wahre Religion, DWR) has been “banned and disbanded” German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere announced in Berlin on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, German police raided more than 200 mosques and homes across the country, targeting people they believe to be linked to The True Religion. According to de Maiziere members of the group are accused of having recruited young people “to join terrorist groups” in Syria or Iraq. The government estimates that around 140 recruits have travelled abroad to fight after attending The True Religion events. Members of the group, also known as ‘Read Foundation’ (Lies Stiftung), reportedly approached people in pedestrian areas and handed out translations of the Quran.

Thomas de Maiziere, German Interior Minister (German): “Today, as Interior Minister I banned and disbanded the group with the name ‘The True Religion’. They also operate under the name ‘Read Foundation’ or ‘Foundation Read’. This group with the name The True Religion brings jihadist Islamists together throughout Germany, under the pretence of advertising Islam, under the pretence of supposedly harmlessly handing out Quran translations. This happens in pedestrian areas, where messages of hate and unconstitutional ideologies are being spread, and youths are being radicalised with conspiracy theories. So far, after they took part in Read events, around 140 young people travelled to Syria or Iraq, to join terrorist groups in their fight.”

Thomas de Maiziere, German Interior Minister (German): “Today’s ban is not targeting the advertising or the exercise and spreading of the Islamic belief in general. Muslim life has a firm and secure place in Germany and in our society. Freedom of religion applies to all and is lived reality. Neither is today’s ban directed at the distribution of the Quran or Quran translations in general. Today’s ban rather targets the misuse of religion by people, who, under the pretence of referring to Islam, propagate extremist ideologies and support terrorist organisations.”

      • The German preacher who heads global Islamist network (thelocal, Nov 15, 2016)
        http://www.thelocal.de/20161115/the-preacher-at-the-heart-of-nationwide-salafist-network

“On Tuesday morning German police raided 200 addresses connected to a now-banned Islamist movement. Ibrahim Abou-Nagie, the movement’s founder, has taken it around the world.

In his video messages to followers, Abou-Nagie doesn’t come across as a dangerous man.

In a recent clip, shot in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, Abou-Nagie appears with a manicured, greying beard and short-cropped hair, and greets his followers with the soothing words: “My dear siblings in Islam.”

But, if German security services are to be believed, the 52-year-old is one of the most dangerous Islamists in Germany.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere on Tuesday banned The True Religion (Die wahre Religion), the preaching network Abou-Nagie founded in 2005, saying it was unconstitutional.

“Under the pretext of promoting Islam, under the pretext of supposedly harmless distribution of translated versions of the Koran that took place in pedestrian zones, hate messages were propagated and young people radicalized,” said the interior minister.

The organization’s controversial programme called “Lies!” distributes copies of the Koran in German. But experts say the translation is a particularly strict version from the original Arabic text.

De Maiziere noted that after participating in the Koran distribution campaign organized by the group, “140 young people travelled to Syria and Iraq where they joined the fight with terrorist groups”.

The “Lies!” initiative is now active in 15 countries including France, Britain, Sweden, Austria, Bahrain and, since June 2016, Brazil. Malaysia is his most recent project, where he still appears to have been on Tuesday, as police raided properties related to his organization.

According to Spiegel, the preacher emigrated from the Gaza Strip – the area of the Palestinian Territories which lies between Egypt and Israel – as an 18-year-old to Iserlohn, North Rhine-Westphalia, where he studied electronic engineering. He gained German citizenship in 1994, reports Die Welt.

In 2003, he is reported to have had an “awakening experience” and found religion.

In his most recent video message to followers, it soon becomes clear that Abou-Nagie is more radical than his calm appearance indicates.

After discussing the initiative to spread the Koran into southeastern Asia, he turns to domestic German politics.

“Only in Germany do we have to live with barbaric politicians who have absolutely no morals and who like to play Rambo,” he says

Whoever does not become a Muslim is condemned “to eternal suffering in hell,” he continues.

The radical preacher also has a prior record with German authorities. In February 2016, he was handed a probationary sentence for professional deception.

The father of three was found to have illegally sought and received €53,000 in welfare payments for his family. He was further found to have hidden income from the state and to have used charitable donations for his own private use.”

  12. Google, Facebook move to restrict ads on fake news sites

Alphabet Inc’s Google (GOOGL.O) and Facebook Inc (FB.O) on Monday announced measures aimed at halting the spread of “fake news” on the internet by targeting how some purveyors of phony content make money: advertising.

Google said it is working on a policy change to prevent websites that misrepresent content from using its AdSense advertising network, while Facebook updated its advertising policies to spell out that its ban on deceptive and misleading content applies to fake news.

The shifts comes as Google, Facebook and Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) face a backlash over the role they played in the U.S. presidential election by allowing the spread of false and often malicious information that might have swayed voters toward Republican candidate Donald Trump.

  13. Defcon nuclear threat REDUCED to safest level following Donald Trump victory
AMERICA’S Defcon warning level has been reduced to its safest threat level possible following Donald Trump’s shock presidential election win.

The Defcon Warning System, a private organisation which monitors world events and estimates the nuclear threat against America, is now at Level 5 – its lowest possible state.

Just weeks ago the warning was accelerated to Level 3 following increased tensions between US and Russia, with insiders fearing the West was creeping closer to nuclear war.

Level 3 means US troops could be mobilised in as little as 15 minutes.

“Iran’s missile programme is “non-negotiable” and tests will continue the country’s foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

“Iran’s defence capabilities cannot be compromised and are under no circumstance negotiable,” Bahram Ghasemi told state television.

    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2016/11/15/twin-bomb-attacks-hit-fallujah-city-centre?

“Twin car-bombs rocked the Iraqi city of Fallujah on Monday, killing at least 30 people and injured 30 others in the first attack on the city since Iraqi forces took over the town from the Islamic State group in June.

IS claimed responsibility for the attack on the Sunni-majority city, sparking rumours of collusion with Iraqi security agents.

“The blasts which struck Fallujah resulted in the deaths of 30 people and more than 30 were wounded,” Hamid Hashim, a member of the Anbar Provincial Council, told The New Arab.

“This has provoked the astonishment of everyone as the city is fortified and completely surrounded [by forces] – one can only enter the city after intensive searching by security forces.”…”

  17. China revives ‘comrade’ in drive for Communist party discipline

Anti-corruption watchdog orders return of outmoded greeting now embraced by gay men

An effort by the Chinese Communist party to revive the term “comrade” has raised eyebrows among the country’s gay community, which has embraced the revolutionary greeting and made it its own.

President Xi Jinping is trying to restore discipline in a sprawling, 88m-member party after years in which cadres chased economic growth and personal gain. This month the party sought to bolster its credentials as a classless revolutionary organisation by ordering members to greet each other as “comrade” and eliminate the growing importance attached to rank and titles.

In corporate offices and particularly within the party, the trend towards using titles — and the obsequious fawning that accompanies them — has galled purists. In April the country’s anti-corruption watchdog railed against the widespread practice of dropping the word “deputy” when addressing a “deputy manager” or “deputy department head”, calling it a type of “word bribery”.

  18. Hong Kong court, in line with China ruling, bars pro-independence lawmakers

HONG KONG (Reuters) – A Hong Kong court on Tuesday disqualified two pro-independence lawmakers from taking office, ruling their oath of allegiance invalid in a judgment in step with Beijing, which last week intervened in the Chinese-ruled city’s legal system.

But High Court Judge Thomas Au said he would have made the ruling anyway, without the controversial “interpretation” by China’s parliament that some lawyers and activists warned had damaged the judicial independence of the global financial hub.

Au acknowledged the decision by the National People’s Congress was binding, but he did question whether the move fell within the legal scope of an interpretation under the Basic Law, the mini-constitution that governs Hong Kong’s relations with Beijing.

The congress ruled that Hong Kong legislators must solemnly swear allegiance to Hong Kong as part of China, adding that candidates who take the oath of office in an insincere manner will be disqualified and not given another chance to swear in.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has detained five people affiliated with the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terror cell in Moscow and Ingushetia, footage released on Tuesday shows.

FSB officers arrested reported IS members after forcing their way into a flat in the Russian capital and also in the southern Russian republic Ingushetia, where an arms cache was discovered. The FSB found five firearms; two improvised explosive devices; ten kilograms of explosives and homemade electronic detonators.

  21. Twitter users to get ability to mute words and conversations
New tools aimed at helping users avoid seeing abusive threads

After nine years, Twitter users will finally be able to mute specific conversations on the site, as well as filter out all tweets with a particular word or phrase from their notifications.

The much requested features are being rolled out today, according to the company. Muting conversations serves two obvious purposes: users who have a tweet go viral will no longer have to deal with thousands of replies from strangers, while users stuck in an interminable conversation between people they don’t know will be able to silently drop out of the discussion.

A broader mute filter serves some clear general uses as well. Users will now be able to mute the names of popular TV shows, for instance, or the teams playing in a match they intend to watch later in the day, from showing up in their notifications, although the mute will not affect a user’s main timeline. “This is a feature we’ve heard many of you ask for, and we’re going to keep listening to make it better and more comprehensive over time,” says Twitter in a blogpost.
Sign up to the new-look Media Briefing: bigger, better, brighter
    Read more

But the features are also part of a wider push by Twitter to fight back against allegations that the company is not interested in dealing with the problem of harassment on its platform. Alongside the new muting options, Twitter has also improved the options users have for reporting hate speech, and it says it has improved its internal tools and training to more effectively deal with the content which is reported.

“Our hateful conduct policy prohibits specific conduct that targets people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. Today we’re giving you a more direct way to report this type of conduct for yourself, or for others, whenever you see it happening,” the company said. “This will improve our ability to process these reports, which helps reduce the burden on the person experiencing the abuse.”

Twitter says the amount of abuse, bullying, and harassment seen across the internet has risen sharply over the past few years,. It said. “These behaviours inhibit people from participating on Twitter, or anywhere. Abusive conduct removes the chance to see and share all perspectives around an issue, which we believe is critical to moving us all forward. In the worst cases, this type of conduct threatens human dignity, which we should all stand together to protect.”

It has previously been suggested that Twitter’s abuse problem cost the company its chance to find a buyer. While both Disney and Salesforce were reportedly examining the option to buy the social network, neither company eventually did, and Bloomberg and CNBC reported that both considered the harassment problem on the site to be a breaking point.

The outcome of the US election may create new issues for Twitter with questions over fake news being shared and over far right posters using the service for abuse. Donald Trump is to take Steve Bannon, the executive chairman of far-right news website Breitbart, to the White House as chief strategist. In July this year Twitter enforced its anti-hate speech rules against an editor on Breitbart, first removing his verified status and then deleting his account after he led a hate campaign against Leslie Jones, an actor in the latest Ghostbusters movie.

Two days after the US election, Twitter’s co-founder and part-time chief executive, Jack Dorsey, tweeted his pledge to always emphasise that the US was founded on the truth that “all people are created equal”.

But Twitter users saw a disconnect between his words and the fact that Trump and his supporters had instead used Twitter to fight their way to victory in the US election.

  22. SPAIN – Migrants flee ‘prison-like’ detention centre in Spain

Spanish police were searching on Tuesday for several Algerians who fled a migrant detention centre following a riot, the sixth such incident since August as calls mount to close the facilities.

In the latest incident, which took place on Monday evening, nine Algerians escaped from a holding centre in Murcia, a region in the south east, police said.

Spain has seven migrant detention centres for holding people living in the country illegally as officials decide whether or not to deport them.

But there have been a growing number of riots and break-outs as migrants protest their detention in what critics say are prison-like conditions.

A regional spokeswoman said migrants had set light to paper and clothing “to attract attention” and had then attacked police who came to the scene, sparking a confrontation in which nine officers were slightly injured.

Last month, there were two other breakouts from the same centre, with more than 70 migrants fleeing. There have also been similar protests at centres in Madrid and Barcelona in recent weeks.

In one incident in Madrid on October 18th, dozens of migrants climbed onto the roof of the facility – a former prison – spending the night there and unfurling a banner reading “freedom”.

Both Madrid and Barcelona have been governed since June 2015 by citizens’ platforms backed by far-left party Podemos, which wants these centres closed.

Critics say that steep public spending cuts imposed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conservative government have worsened conditions at the centres.

    Dilapidated, understaffed

Police union SUP says many facilities are dilapidated and have insufficient staff. It says centres in the south, for instance, flood when it rains to the point that detainees have to roll up their trousers to the knee.

Javier Monje, SUP’s spokesman in Murcia, called on Tuesday for the centre to be closed.

“It cannot stay open a minute more,” he told AFP, pointing out that police at the centre were under equipped.

In an interview published last month in online daily eldiario.es, Ramiro Garcia de Dios, the judge in charge of overseeing Madrid’s migrant centre, alleged police impunity was also rife.

Spain is not the only country to have been hit by such allegations.

Rights group Amnesty International has also accused Italian police of mistreating migrants.

“MIGRANTS are missing and three police officers have been wounded after a riot in a detention centre for migrants in Murcia, Spain.

Police sources have reported that the revolt happened just before 9pm on Monday night when inmates set fire to papers and cardboards and began to fight with the police.

They tweeted: “We ask political and police officials what misfortune must occur to solve these security issues.”

In total, nine migrants are on the run.

  23. BREITBART -Austria: 40 Per Cent of Islamic Radicals Recently Arrived as ‘Refugees’

VIENNA (AP) — Austria’s interior ministry says that of the 287 Islamic radicals identified in the country in the past few years, 40 percent arrived as migrants looking for asylum.

The ministry says its data covers a period from early 2011 and ending July 1 of this year. It released the data Monday in answer to a parliamentary query from the right-wing and anti-migrant Freedom Party.

The ministry says that of the identified radicals, 44 are believed to have been killed in Syria, 87 have returned from fighting in Syria or Iraq and 50 were prevented from joining radical fighters in those two countries. The rest are still believed to be in the region.

Ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck says most apparently became radicalized after arriving in Austria. He says the largest group is Chechens.

  24. CBC – Toronto police investigate posters in East York that promote ‘alt-right’

Neighbours disturbed by posters after they appeared on hydro poles on Monday

Toronto police say they are investigating posters put up in East York on Monday that urge people to join the “alt-right.”

“It’s something that we are looking into,” Const. Caroline De Kloet said Tuesday. “There is an investigation and we will go from there.”

De Kloet said police have taken photos of the posters and are trying to find out who is responsible.

Police said anyone who sees people putting up the racist posters are urged to contact police.

The posters, of which there at least a half dozen, showed up on Monday in and around Stan Wadlow Park, near Woodbine and Cosburn Avenues in East York.

“Tired of political correctness?” the poster reads. “Wondering why only white countries have to become ‘multicultural?’ Figured out that diversity only means ‘less white people?””

The posters also list websites that promise to provide news from a “pro-European” perspective.

On Tuesday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne responded to the posters.

“It’s very important to fight against these attitudes,” she said. “It’s very disturbing to me.”

Meanwhile, a Toronto father of two who ripped down at least three of the posters says the signs will actually have the opposite effect of what they intended.

“When I see people in my neighbourhood now, I want to share an extra smile with them,” Ian Daffern, an East York resident, said on Metro Morning.

Daffern said the posters, which begin with words, “Hey, white person,” have prompted him to think about what he can do to promote diversity in Toronto and help visible minorities who may be in need.

He said he thinks the posters, which promote hate, will help to bring the community together.

As a starting point, Daffern said he plans to donate used clothing to New Circles Community Services, a not-for-profit, grass-roots agency in North York that offers free clothing services, community referrals and skill building programs in Toronto’s Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park, Victoria Village and Crescent Town neighbourhoods.

Keep your eyes open, dad urges

“It’s important to keep your eyes open,” he said. “I’m concerned about people of colour.”

One poster was affixed to a hydro pole on the property of the Toronto District School Board’s Parkside Elementary at 401 Cedarvale Ave., for students in junior kindergarten through Grade 5.

Daffern said that he was walking his son, 4, to junior kindergarten on Monday morning when he saw one of the posters and immediately tried to rip it down. The posters were glued to poles.

“When I saw the poster, my son was kind of pulling me onto school. As you say, I just stopped in my tracks,” he said. “It didn’t take me long to start tearing it down. It was pasted on the pole so it was hard to take it all the way off.”

He said his son wanted to continue onto school but he felt impelled to take time to tear the poster down. “I said: I want to get this because I don’t like bullies,” he said. “This is a racist poster and I want to rip this down.”
‘What concerns me is people might start to see this as normal’

Daffern said he thinks the U.S. presidential election has given licence to groups in Toronto that espouse hate. He said white nationalist groups uses racist politics to garner popular support and that Donald Trump did not disavow racist groups who supported him.

“It makes me so angry to see this kind of thing in my neighbourhood or anywhere in Toronto. I think the values that it puts forward, they’re completely against everything we stand for in Toronto. And for me, to see this just around my home, it makes me really mad. I wanted to get rid of it,” he said.

“What concerns me is people might start to see this as normal in Canada.”

The Danforth East Community Association (DECA) said in a message to its members that it is grateful that neighbourhood elected representatives have condemned the posters.

“We are very alarmed and disturbed by the anti-diversity posters that appeared in our neighbourhood today. We don’t have the answers,” DECA said in a message. “Like many of you, we are struggling to find a way to respond to what feels like escalating hate or violence in our community. It won’t be solved today or tomorrow or this week.”

Coun. Janet Davis said in a tweet: “This hate is unacceptable in our city.”

    • Breitbart News planning lawsuit against ‘major media company’

Breitbart News is preparing a lawsuit against a “major media company” over claims that it is a white nationalist website, it said in an exclusive statement to The Hill.

The website has been under intense scrutiny since President-elect Donald Trump named Stephen Bannon as a senior White House counselor and strategist. Bannon is the former executive chairman of Breitbart News, and the site has become associated with the “alt-right” movement that helped propel Trump’s candidacy.

“Breitbart News Network, a pro-America, conservative website, is preparing a multi-million dollar lawsuit against a major media company for its baseless and defamatory claim that Breitbart News is a ‘white nationalist website,’” the statement reads.

“Breitbart News cannot allow such vicious racial lies to go unchallenged, especially by cynical, politically-motivated competitors seeking to diminish its 42 million monthly readers and its number one in the world political Facebook page. Breitbart News rejects racism in all its varied and ugly forms. Always has, always will,” the statement continues.

“The diversity of the company’s news coverage and its staff continue to embody Andrew Breitbart’s colorblind, distinctly American commitment to ‘E pluribus unum’—out of many, one.”

Breitbart News — which generated 240 million page views and attracted 37 million unique visitors in the month of October leading up to Election Day — would not comment on which major media company the publication plans to sue, nor when the suit will be filed.

Critics have taken aim at the site’s coverage in recent days.

While Bannon was executive chairman of Breitbart, the website published a story by David Horowitz referring to conservative commentator Bill Kristol as a “renegade Jew,” something that has been mentioned repeatedly in media coverage calling Breitbart a white nationalist website.

Democrats have also slammed Bannon, arguing that Trump is bringing a “white supremacist” into the White House.

A spokesman for the Trump transition defended Bannon on Monday, calling the media coverage of his appointment “irresponsible.”

“What I think is frustrating is when we see so much news coverage, particularly on this network, unfortunately, on the issues that divide us after the election,” Jason Miller, communications director for Trump’s transition team, said on CNN’s “New Day.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu responded to German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s criticism of Turkey’s response to the attempted coup, at a press conference with Steinmeier in Ankara, on Tuesday.

Cavusoglu addressed Steinmeier’s concerns and those of the wider EU leadership, stating “How dare you decide to put Turkey out? First of all, you are not authorised to make these kinds of decisions. There is a consensus needed. We do not deserve these kinds of attitudes. Therefore, if we make the decision, we will turn to our people, and ask them for the decision.”

SOT, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkish Foreign Minister (Turkish): “Lately, all of the FETO [Fetullah Terrorist Organisation] related terrorists are going there. I was in Switzerland recently, and a member of the PKK [Kurdistan Workers’ Party] and a number of DHKPC [Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party] terrorists were exiled. They are going to Germany. Why would members of these two different terror organisations go to Germany? You are offended when we mention these things, but as a friend, we have to talk about it. Where are the terrorists now? They are in Germany. As recently as yesterday, I think it was in Cologne, they openly performed their protest. They are attacking my consulates, burning their cars. 27. the guardian –Integrating Muslims into Europe is ‘impossible’, says Czech president

Milos Zeman, an anti-immigration leftwinger, claimed the influx of refugees into Europe was masterminded by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood

Czech president Milos Zeman, known for his fiery anti-migrant rhetoric, claimed on Sunday it was “practically impossible” to integrate the Muslim community into European society.

“The experience of western European countries which have ghettos and excluded localities shows that the integration of the Muslim community is practically impossible,” Zeman said in a televised interview.

“Let them have their culture in their countries and not take it to Europe, otherwise it will end up like Cologne,” he added, referring to the mass New Year’s Eve assaults on women in Germany and elsewhere.

“Integration is possible with cultures that are similar, and the similarities may vary,” pointing out that the Vietnamese and Ukrainian communities had been able to integrate into Czech society.

Zeman, a 71-year-old leftwinger and the first-ever directly elected president of the Czech Republic, has repeatedly spoken out against the surge of migrant and refugee arrivals in Europe.

Earlier this month, Zeman claimed the influx was masterminded by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, saying the Islamist group was using money from several states to finance it in a bid to “gradually control Europe”.

Late last year, Zeman called the surge in refugee numbers “an organised invasion”, urging young men from Iraq and Syria to “take up arms” against the Islamic State (IS) group instead of running away.

More than one million migrants reached Europe in 2015, most of them refugees fleeing war and violence in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, according to the United Nations refugee agency.

But few asylum seekers have chosen to stay in the largely secular Czech Republic, an EU and NATO member of 10.5 million people, with the majority heading to wealthier Germany and other western states.

The Czech government has pledged to accept refugees under an EU quota scheme to place 160,000 asylum seekers throughout the bloc, despite prime minister Bohuslav Sobotka saying it is doomed to failure given refugees’ determination to head to Germany and other favoured countries.

On Sunday, Pope Francis welcomed 5,000 migrant worshippers at a special mass at St Peter’s to mark the world day of migrants and refugees, urging them to treasure their culture and values as they start their new lives.

“Dear migrants and refugees, each one of you carries with them a story, a culture and precious values – but also, unfortunately, often experiences of misery, oppression and fear,” he told them.

The pontiff used an address to Vatican ambassadors on Monday to urge European governments to keep welcoming migrants, while acknowledging security and other concerns over the recent mass influx of people from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.

“The Turkish nation is frustrated by the European Union’s “hypocrisy and double standards” toward Turkey, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu has said, noting that the government was consequently considering holding a referendum about Ankara’s future relations with the bloc.

“Every day, an EU foreign minister comes up and says: ‘Let’s throw Turkey out, let’s throw them out of the negotiations, let’s throw them out of NATO.’ We don’t deserve this treatment. Therefore, let’s ask our people and let the people decide,” he said Nov. 15 alongside German FM Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

“We are truly fed up with this approach that humiliates Turkey,” the Turkish minister said.

Because of this reaction, “Turkish people put pressure on us to stop these negotiations,” Çavu?o?lu said.

The minister once more called on Germany to extradite “terrorists” in the country, saying there were nearly 4,500 files about outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members.

He asked Germany not to allow PKK members to live in the country.

Steinmeier said Germany was addressing the files in line with the country’s laws…”

“Submitting documentary evidence on the ‘legitimacy’ of their assets before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, claimed their London apartment was bought through Qatari investments.

Along with a 397-page document consisting details of transactions as well as receipts of payments since 2011, the Sharif family submitted a letter from a Qatari prince claiming the flats were purchased through the settlement of accounts between his family’s company and the Sharif family…”

  32. Trump Supreme Court Picks Could Strike Blow Against Coercive Dues

President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to replace Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court could swing the court away from union-friendly precedents, according to labor watchdogs.

An exit poll taken by NBC News showed that 75% of Trump voters cited the Supreme Court as an important factor in the election, including nearly 30% who said it was the “most important factor” for choosing the Republican. While on the campaign trail, Trump released a short list of 21 conservative jurists and scholars who he would consider for the court in an effort to woo social conservatives eager to overturn Roe v. Wade.

That appointment, however, would do more than just affect the nation’s abortion laws; it could also shape the American workplace and worker freedom for years to come.

The National Right to Work Foundation and its legal arm has a number of cases at various stages of federal courts that could overturn long-standing practices of forced dues among public and private sector workers.

“The impact of Trumps’ Supreme Court appointments when it comes to labor cases will be huge,” foundation spokesman Patrick Semmens said. “If Trump nominates the type of justice he promised on the campaign trail, millions of teachers, first responders, and other government employees would finally be free to decide for themselves if they want to join and pay dues to a union.”

  33. More Than Half of the Anti-Trump Rioters Arrested Didn’t Vote

More than half of the protestors arrested in Portland, Oregon, last weekend did not vote in the state.

According to 13 News Now, 69 of the rioters did not vote or are not registered to vote in the state.

KGW compiled a list of the 112 people arrested by the Portland Police Bureau during recent protests. Those names and ages, provided by police, were then compared to state voter logs by Multnomah County Elections officials.

Records show 34 of the protesters arrested didn’t return a ballot for the November 8 election. Thirty-five of the demonstrators taken into custody weren’t registered to vote in Oregon.

Twenty-five protesters who were arrested did vote.

  34. George Soros Demands Voters Return Control of Country to Him

He paid for it. It’s his. Give it back!

Soros bands with donors to resist Trump, ‘take back power’

So long as we’re not pretending that there’s any democracy here. Just oligarchs who want power.

George Soros and other rich liberals who spent tens of millions of dollars trying to elect Hillary Clinton are gathering in Washington for a three-day, closed door meeting to retool the big-money left to fight back against Donald Trump.

The conference, which kicked off Sunday night at Washington’s pricey Mandarin Oriental hotel, is sponsored by the influential Democracy Alliance donor club, and will include appearances by leaders of most leading unions and liberal groups, as well as darlings of the left such as House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairman Keith Ellison, according to an agenda and other documents obtained by POLITICO.

Come on over, the whole comintern’s here.

  35. Leftist Hysteria & Hate Crime Hoaxes
Anti-Trump agitators engage in campaign of violence and fabrication while media lends helping hand.

The 2016 elections are finally over and America has chosen its next leader but the stench of hate emanating from the radical Left still lingers. A lethal mix of professional agitators, anarchists, illegal aliens and basement-dwelling social justice warriors, has taken to the streets to voice protest over the results. In actuality, they are protesting against the democratic process itself.

Some of the anti-Trump manifestations have become violent. In Redwood City, California a high school student was physically assaulted after she voiced support for Trump on social media. Her attacker, a fellow student, accused her of “hating Mexicans” and without provocation proceeded to punch, kick and throw her to the ground. The school said that it would discipline the perpetrator but failed to elaborate further.

In Chicago, a group of five thugs – three men and two women – brutally savaged 49-year old David Wilcox while screaming “You voted Trump” and “Don’t vote Trump.” One of the gang riled the others by taunting, “Yeah, it’s one of them white boy Trump guys.” Several days passed before the mainstream media gave the incident any attention while the website Snopes initially issued a sanitized account of what occurred, downplaying or burying outright, other aggravating factors. The New York Times, the paper that recently apologized to its subscribers for its slanted coverage of the election, dedicated a grand total of five short paragraphs to the story.

    • Read the rest of the article, it is interesting to see how wide spread the unrest is. Then think back to the article about Soros.

  36. The Left’s Orwellian Tactics
    Yearnings for a thugocracy.

    Michael Cutler

Since the election of Donald Trump to be America’s next President, large groups of protestors and rioters have fanned out around the United States, smashing windows, damaging property and physically attacking other people to express their anger of Trump’s victory.

Their conduct in the aftermath of the election of a president is unprecedented but, given the riots launched by “Black Lives Matter” not a huge surprise.

The central theme of the anti-Trump demonstrators is to equate his calls for border security and effective immigration law enforcement with racism and bigotry.

Undoubtedly some of the demonstrators, particularly the non-violent demonstrators, are truly concerned about racism. However, they are grossly misinformed and are tragically being exploited and manipulated by the globalists and immigration anarchists, having been convinced by the decades of lies told about immigration by our politicians and pundits.

Our immigration laws as we will see, have absolutely nothing to do with xenophobia or racism.

During the first Republican presidential debate Fox News correspondent Bret Baier opened the debate by asking all of the Republican candidates on stage to raise their hand if they would not support any Republican candidate who would win the primaries and possibly run as a third party candidate.

  37. European Temper Trumptums
    Europe Holds “Panic Dinner”

“A world is collapsing before our eyes”, tweeted the French ambassador to the United States, Gerard Araud, as it became clear that Donald Trump had won the US presidential election. Although he later apparently deleted the tweet, the sentiment expressed in his tweet encapsulates the attitude of the majority of the European political establishment.

Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster, described the reaction to Trump’s victory across Germany’s political spectrum as “shock and uncertainty.” Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen described Trump’s win as a “heavy shock.” German Justice Minister Heiko Maas tweeted: “The world won’t end, but things will get more crazy”.

Green party leader Cem Özdemir called Trump’s election a “break with the tradition that the West stands for liberal values.”

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s deputy chancellor, Sigmar Gabriel, said:

“Trump is the trailblazer of a new authoritarian and chauvinist international movement. … They want a rollback to the bad old times in which women belonged by the stove or in bed, gays in jail and unions at best at the side table. And he who doesn’t keep his mouth shut gets publicly bashed.”

In a fine touch of irony, EU Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, who recently referred to the Chinese as “slanty eyed,” told Deutschlandfunk radio that the U.S. election was a “warning” for Germany: “Things are getting simplified, black or white, good or bad, right or wrong. You can ask simple questions, but one should not give simple answers.”
