A Civil-Rights Group That Once Took Klansmen and Neo-Nazis to Court Now Hounds Liberal Muslims for “Blasphemy”
Founded in 1971 to combat white-supremacist groups, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) won a number of important legal battles against the Ku Klux Klan, various neo-Nazi groups, and other opponents of desegregation. Now it generates materials like its “field guide to anti-Muslim extremists”: a list of fifteen individuals that includes the historian Daniel Pipes, the apostate Muslim Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and the British Muslim critic of jihadism Maajid Nawaz. Among Nawaz’s crimes are having tweeted a cartoon portraying Jesus and Muhammad, “despite the fact that many Muslims see [such depictions] as blasphemous.” Nick Cohen comments on what he calls “the white left’s first fatwa”:

They have defended liberal Muslims and, indeed, all of us from lethal blasphemy taboos and the threat of terrorism. They respect freedom of speech, including the freedom of their enemies to speak…. In a case awaiting review by the Supreme Court, the Pacific Legal Foundation has filed a friend-of-the-court brief making an argument for one of the nation’s fundamental principles—the equal protection of the law.
The case is Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia v. Sara Parker Pauley. The church is located in Columbia, Mo., and Ms. Pauley is director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The church is making three claims: one under the First Amendment’s establishment clause, a second under its free-exercise clause, and a third under the Fourteenth Amendment’s equal-protection clause. It is the equal-protection argument that is most interesting. . . . [In an amicus brief], the Pacific Legal Foundation . . . argues that, while equal-protection cases “most commonly address discrimination on the basis of race,” the Supreme Court’s equal-protection decisions “reflect the view that differential treatment on the basis of religion is just as intolerable.” . . .
The foundation says that Missouri violated the U.S. Constitution by excluding [the church playground] from its Scrap Tire Program on the basis of religion. Treating people differently on the basis of race is subject to “strict scrutiny,” the Supreme Court’s “most stringent standard of review.” The Pacific Legal Foundation argues that “strict scrutiny is just as appropriate” when classifications based on religion are under review. . . .
By taking seriously unequal treatment on the basis of religion, the Pacific Legal Foundation has offered an understanding of equal protection and what it entails that is worthy of the Court’s attention.

Telefilm aims by 2020 to achieve a balanced production portfolio (at all budget levels) that reflects gender parity in each of the key roles of: director, writer and producer.
“We’re extremely proud that, together with the industry, we’re moving to quickly and concretely foster gender parity in Canadian cinema,” said Carolle Brabant, Telefilm Canada’s Executive Director. “Our goal is to level the playing field for Canadian female talent, and we encourage creators to submit projects directed and/or written by women. This can only benefit the industry as whole; increased competition can lead to better quality projects that connect with audiences whose tastes and interests are changing along with the cultural landscape.”

We will now take the same measured, consultative approach to ensuring our feature film portfolio also better reflects cultural diversity and Indigenous communities. Telefilm’s five-pronged action plan to achieve gender parity is as follows:
Encouraging a diversity of projects: Telefilm will encourage producers to submit projects that reflect the diversity of Canada’s population.
Evaluation of projects: Telefilm will now, for projects of equal quality, favour projects that have a woman as director and/or a woman as writer (as per guidelines). Based on industry recommendations that these two roles require immediate critical attention, gender parity amongst directors and screenwriters was identified as a priority. In September 2017, once Telefilm reviews its survey data (see below), the challenges of women producers will be addressed.
Transparency and reporting: Telefilm will continue to respect government privacy laws. However, in order to regularly report back to the industry, other means of data reporting have been created. Industry representatives have agreed to encourage their members to provide information, via a voluntary questionnaire at the application stage, which will identify key creative members of the team (director, writer, producer). This questionnaire will also address questions regarding cultural diversity amongst key creatives, and if members are from Indigenous communities. Based on the collected information, we will re-evaluate each year what our priorities should be in order to reach our global diversity objective.
Continued targeted promotion of female talent to raise their professional profile and market appeal (ex. St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, Birks Diamond TributeHot Docs’ Don Haig Award Pay It Forward Prize). Telefilm will continue to promote all talent in its general promotional activities.

A student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette fabricated a story that she was attacked and had her hijab rippped off, police said Thursday.
The attack was one of several reported in the wake of Donald Trump’s election victory.
In a press release Thursday afternoon, the Lafayette Police Department said that during the course of their investigation into the woman’s complaint, she “admitted that she fabricated the story about her physical attack as well as the removal of her hijab and wallet by two white males.

Far-right nationalists congregate on Polish Independence day
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Tens of thousands of far-right nationalists, burning flares and carrying Polish flags, marched peacefully through the streets of Warsaw on Friday to mark Poland’s Independence Day.
In a yearly ritual that has become one of the largest far-right gatherings in Europe, they marched under the slogan “Poland the Bastion of Europe.”
The nationalists are strongly opposed to accepting refugees from the Middle East. Some of them carried banners depicting a falanga, which is a far-right symbol dating to the 1930s of a stylized hand with a sword.
The Interior Ministry estimated that 75,000 people joined the march, while Warsaw town hall estimated the number at 60,000. It proceeded peacefully, in contrast to violence of several marches in the past.
One huge banner read “God, Honor, Fatherland,” a patriotic slogan. Others read: “Death to the enemies of the fatherland” and “To be a Pole, to be a Catholic is a privilege and honor.”
Some participants burned a Ukrainian flag at the march, which comes amid increased strains between Poland and Ukraine because of renewed discussions of a wartime massacre of Poles by Ukrainians.
The main organizers were the National Radical Camp and the All-Polish Youth, groups which take their names from radical nationalistic groups of the 1930s that pushed a virulently anti-Semitic ideology.
“This movement promotes the exclusion of all minorities and of everyone who isn’t Polish enough,” said Rafal Pankowski, the head of Never Again, an organization that monitors and fights racism and extremism. “This year and last year, the anti-Muslim message has been emphasized and it is an extreme and violent message.”
Pankowski said skinheads and other extremists held their first, small march on Independence Day in 2009 and that the yearly event has grown in number each year. It now draws extremists from Hungary, Germany, Sweden and the U.K., becoming what Pankowski believes is the largest such far-right gathering in Europe.

This is part of the march, about 1 hour of it, but you can see how peaceful it is. And the funny thing is that all these people with children, youth and old people are, according to the media, far-rightists. They think that if someone believe in God and is patriotic then one must be “far-right” .

“(ANSA) – Pordenone, November 11 – A judge in the northern city of Pordenone on Friday handed a four-month prison sentence to a woman who failed to meet a demand to show her face and identify herself while wearing a niqab in a public building in a nearby town. The judge converted the punishment into a 30,000-euro fine. The incident happened three weeks ago when the 40-year-old woman of Albanian origin entered the town hall of San Vito al Tagliamento, where a council meeting for young people was taking place, wearing a niqab, which covers all the face except for the eyes.
Mayor Antonio Di Bisceglie, a member of Premier Matteo Renzi’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD), repeatedly asked the woman to remote the traditional Muslim headgear, but she refused.
The woman, who has lived in San Vito al Tagliamento since 2000 and recently acquired Italian citizenship, was removed from the council assembly by local police, who then identified her.

Despite EU alarm at the scale of Ankara’s post-coup security crackdown, EU diplomats say they must keep talking to President Tayyip Erdogan to retain his crucial help in curbing migration to Europe and fighting Islamist militants in the Middle East.
But the fact that Austria, Luxembourg and some European lawmakers now openly call for suspending the Turkey talks marks a sea change in tone just eight months after the bloc promised Ankara the process would be sped up in exchange for its collaboration in reducing migration from its territory.
“Suspending membership talks with Turkey is not formally on the agenda but we expect some ministers to bring this up,” one EU official said of the 28 foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled in Brussels on Monday.
“It is true some deeply troubling things are happening in Turkey. But you have to ask yourself the question what exactly would we achieve by suspending the process now? How would that help? We need to keep communication channels open.”
An EU report this week accused Turkey of backsliding on its road to membership since the July coup attempt, since which Ankara has suspended, dismissed or arrested over 110,000 people including soldiers, judges, teachers, journalists and Kurdish leaders over alleged support of the putsch.
The EU’s top enlargement official said Turkey’s EU candidacy was now hanging in the balance.

ridiculous. Federal law prohibits asking and storing information about religion, specifically wrt census data. The only way that non-Muslim middle-easterners were able to have a category was that they asked that the long version of the census include the ethnicity of Assyrian.
