      Hillary Clinton failed to show up at her own victory party at the Jacob K. Javits center, while campaign chairman John Podesta spoke after 2:00 a.m. and declined to concede the election.

      Despite trailing to Trump 254-218, and with the Associated Press already calling Pennsylvania for Donald Trump, Podesta struck a defiant posture, urging Hillary Clinton’s supporters to go home and “get some sleep,” insisting that every vote be counted.

      During the third presidential debate, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was challenged as to whether he would accept the results of the election if he lost. (He had already answered that question in the affirmative in the first debate.) When he left the question open, Democrats and media critics suggested that his position was a threat to American democracy.

      Associated Press: Trump wins White House in astonishing victory

      WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump was elected America’s 45th president Tuesday, an astonishing victory for a celebrity businessman and political novice who capitalized on voters’ economic anxieties, took advantage of racial tensions and overcame a string of sexual assault allegations on his way to the White House.

      His triumph over Hillary Clinton will end eight years of Democratic dominance of the White House and threatens to undo major achievements of President Barack Obama. He’s pledged to act quickly to repeal Obama’s landmark health care law, revoke the nuclear agreement with Iran and rewrite important trade deals with other countries, particularly Mexico and Canada.

      A New York real estate developer who lives in a sparking Manhattan high-rise, Trump forged a striking connection with white, working class Americans who feel left behind in a changing economy and diversifying country. He cast immigration, both from Latin America and the Middle East, as the root of the problems plaguing many Americans and taped into fears of terrorism emanating at home and abroad.

      Trump will take office with Congress expected to be fully under Republican control. GOP Senate candidates fended off Democratic challengers in key states and appeared poised to maintain the majority. Republicans also maintained their grip on the House.

Please recall that this is the same individual who promised American voters the, “Most Transparent Administration in History“. If only he had meant the “most transparently CORRUPT administration in history”, then future accounts might judge him more kindly.

    Instead, this totally unqualified political interloper has surpassed Bush 2.0’s glaring incompetence and partisan divisiveness in such an unexpectedly overawing manner as to render all who came before him appear as mere talentless amateurs.

  5. Donald Trump just blew up the electoral map
    Donald Trump is the president-elect of the United States of America, and he did it by completely blowing up the electoral map and all of our projections and expectations of it.

    To wit:
    Trump won his so-called “must-win” states of Ohio, Florida and North Carolina in races that were called on Tuesday night.

    He won his other apparent “must-win” state, blue-leaning swing state Pennsylvania, which was called for Trump early Wednesday morning.

    Not stopping there, he won at least one and possibly two states in which he didn’t even campaign until the final week of the 2016 election: Michigan and Wisconsin. These, like Pennsylvania, are states that have long eluded the GOP’s grasp and didn’t seem likely to be winnable for Trump.

    All of this disproves the idea, which we and everyone else have espoused early and often, that Trump’s path to victory was narrow. It wasn’t. It was broad. We were wrong. The polls were wrong. We fundamentally misunderstood this election. We thought Hillary Clinton might be winning red states. But Donald Trump won blue states.

      I’m no fan of Peter Thiel, the billionaire who put Gawker out of business by bankrolling a lawsuit by Hulk Hogan, the professional wrestler. In fact, I find him appalling.

      But when he spoke recently at the National Press Club, he said something that struck me as quite perceptive about Donald Trump.

      “The media is always taking Trump literally. It never takes him seriously, but it always takes him literally,” Thiel said. Journalists wanted to know exactly how he would deport that many undocumented immigrants, or exactly how Trump would rid the world of ISIS. We wanted details.

      But a lot of voters think the opposite way: They take Trump seriously but not literally.

      They realize, Thiel said, that Trump doesn’t really plan to build a wall. “What they hear is, ‘We’re going to have a saner, more sensible immigration policy.’ ”
      Trump, quite apparently, captured the anger that Americans were feeling about issues such as trade and immigration.

      And although many journalists and many news organizations did stories about the frustration and disenfranchisement of these Americans, we did not take them seriously enough.

      And although we journalists try to portray ourselves as cynical sometimes, or hard-bitten, we can also be idealistic, even naive.

      We wanted to believe in a country where decency and civility still mattered, and where someone so crude, spiteful and intemperate could never be elected — bec America was better than that.

      I can fault journalists for a lot of things, but I can’t fault us for that.

    Few things could better symbolize the unprecedented partisan divide that has riven America’s political landscape than the above image (click to view) of sand-laden dump trucks barricading the respective gathering places of both presidential candidates.

    Only the most naïve observers could persuade themselves that this was for protection against Islamic terrorists. The 1995, Oaklahoma truck-bomb attack seemingly, and forever, altered that equation (despite numerous unanswered questions about the event’s conspicuous terrorist links—please also review Peter Lance’s excellent 9-11 exposé, “Triple Cross“). Furthermore, that such protection was furnished to Trump and Clinton ALIKE bespeaks just how extensive the alienation has become within this nation’s domestic political system.

    It evokes rather grim humor to mention how Canada’s immigration website just crashed during this past election night. The takeaway from this is, again, literally awash with irony—a noun that American Liberals seem to have inadvertently appropriated as their exclusive domain over the course of this recent presidential election cycle.

    More than a few who are reading these words will probably recall the patriotic Vietnam-era slogan, “America, love it or leave it.” It represents an undeniable degree of insincerity among those who emphatically declared how this nation’s future hinged upon Hillary Clinton’s election to suddenly have decided to abandon ship (i.e., “leave it”), instead of remaining onboard to “work within the system” as part of effecting their own vision of positive change.

    Equally disturbing (if not more so), has been the unashamed favoritism and distinct partisan media collusion which has characterized this election cycle. One particularly egregious manifestation resides in how, “Leaked Debate Questions May Have Come From [a] CNN Producer. Not even such a politically corrosive figure as Richard Nixon attracted this sort of willful and unconcealed journalistic bias from the press.

    Such a deliberate attempt to rig an American presidential election will, most likely (and quite deservingly), only end up accelerating the speed with which this nation’s news audiences “unplug” from on-air, broadcast network purveyors and, increasingly, seek out independent information outlets (e.g., the Internet – bless its not-so-little transistorized, electronic heart).

    Perhaps saddest of all is the way that so many Millennials probably will not even recognize what an immense victory this represents for America’s last bastion of Free Speech, (i.e., the Web). Even as they appear to be inextricably bound up in the polarizing partisan politics of this one particular election cycle, it seems improbable that this youthful portion of America’s electorate will sufficiently appreciate the extraordinary gift bequeathed to them—not just through those countless, ultimate sacrifices made by, “The Greatest Generation”, but also—from “Baby Boomer” Cold War-era warriors that endured shattering economic fluctuations in the high technology sector, and the devastating so-called “Peace Dividends” which eventually drove insanely harmful employment recruiting practices involving domestic workforce replacement via H-1B visas.

    For years there gradually has emerged what only can be termed the practice of, “defensive voting”. As in, not casting ballots FOR a particular candidate but, instead, being limited to voting AGAINST someone who is deemed ideologically unacceptable. Accurately or not, some election commentators have labeled Trump’s all-but-confirmed victory as a “Protest Vote”. At this juncture, it would be remiss to overlook how both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were reviled as—what can only be called—two of the most hated presidential candidates in modern (if not all of) American political history.

    Even more negligent would be disregarding any notice of the “Never Trump” contingent. As in, those who (by default or whatever) deliberately sought to install Hillary Clinton as this nation’s Commander in Chief. In many ways, this form of opposition was much less pardonable than the outright obstruction presented by overt Democratic Party opponents. Putting aside labels like “RINO” and whatever other names for insufficiently conservative Republicans, the fact remains that these “Never Trump” constituents consciously participated in a direct attempt to elect Hillary Clinton.

    While vindictiveness has never be what I would term an admirable or truly productive attribute, singling out and actively censuring the “Never Trump” deputation can only be regarded as a prudent countermeasure against future partisan destabilization. Call them “traitors” or just “seriously misguided individuals”, all the same, they represent a political liability which cannot be squared without a lot of detailed scrutiny.

    Most discouraging of all is the tragic loss of what was a seemingly and (one would hope) unpretentious element traditionally known as, “The Loyal Opposition“. As a folk tale aficionado, I can only say that—”Once upon a time”—there existed in America dissenting political opponents who, nonetheless, were more than able to (admirably and) readily set aside ideological differences if that was what it took to ensure the overall success of America as a nation.

    That sort of unwavering (bipartisan) dedication to our country’s ongoing achievement has been absent for a lamentable number of decades. Any inability to restore this crucial, mutual cooperation foretells the success of our (Islamic and Communist) enemies.

    To close; it is impossible to omit admiration for Eeyore’s earlier commitment regarding the importance of holding Donald Trump accountable for all of his campaign promises, just as any sane observer would have done so in the case of Hillary Clinton. At the very least, ensuring Trump’s fulfillment of his commitments is a worthwhile pathway towards reestablishing legitimate and functional American political institutions.

    The United States of America and our entire world will be that much better off if we can achieve this.

    Let’s give it a go. Eh, wot?

      • Thank you, Richard. We have a lot of work in front of us but, for once, at least there is some prospect of success. 0bama and Hillary were total obstructionists with respect to national unity and progress.

        • We and others have to keep pressure on Congress to help Trump reverse and repair all of the damage that Obama has done to the rule of law. Part of repair will come from the Judges that are appointed and approved. We need strict Constructionists who will not (illegaly) write law in their decisions.

      It would have been bad enough if Jeb Bush had succeeded Obama. That would have been inconvenient, but not a repudiation. Instead Obama’s legacy was dashed to pieces. His frantic efforts to campaign for Hillary did no good. The public did not vocally reject him. What they did was in its own way even worse. They brushed past him. They sidelined him. They gave him passable approval ratings while dismissing his biggest accomplishments. They forgot him. They made it clear that he did not matter.

      And that is in its own way far more brutal and wounding. They didn’t just destroy the Obama era. Instead they dismissed it as if it never existed.

      Obama didn’t make history after all. He wasn’t a teleprompter demi-god standing athwart of history. He was Carter and Ford. He was there to be forgotten. He didn’t change the world. He wasn’t the messiah. He was merely mortal. Just another politician who will sag and age. Who will, in the end, be photographed like Bill Clinton, lonely and lost in a world that has passed him by.

      The Obama era ends not with a bang, but with a whimper. With a national consensus that maybe he didn’t really matter so much after all. And those to whom he mattered the most were his enemies determined to undo everything he did.

      Obama once thought that he belonged to the ages. Now he belongs in the rubbish bin.”

  13. Protesters break windows, start fires in Oakland in response to Trump victory

    That didn’t take long… On Wednesday, KTVU reported that protesters took to the streets hours after Republican Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, starting fires and breaking windows.

    According to KTVU:

    Up to 100 people were said to have gathered in downtown Oakland to protest the results. Many spectators had gathered on Telegraph Avenue and continue to march. BART has shut down the 12th street station in downtown Oakland as a result.

    We are hearing reports of broken windows and cars on fire.

    The election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president was met with disbelief and despondency on Wednesday among some United Nations officials and diplomats amid uncertainty surrounding his foreign policy and likely engagement with the world body.

    Trump, a Republican, has described the 71-year-old United Nations as weak and incompetent and threatened to pull out of a global deal to combat climate change – a cornerstone of the legacy of U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon, who steps down at the end of 2016 after serving two five-year terms as secretary-general.

    “The United Nations is not a friend of democracy, it’s not a friend to freedom, it’s not a friend even to the United States of America,” Trump said during a speech in March to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

    The United States is a veto-wielding member of the 15-member U.N. Security Council and the largest financial contributor to the United Nations. Washington owes about $1.1 billion, the United Nations said. Republicans have long been reluctant to pay dues, accusing the world body of waste and bias.

    Ban said on Wednesday he hoped that the Trump administration would “strengthen the bonds of international cooperation.”

    “People everywhere look to the United States to use its remarkable power to help lift humanity up and to work for the common good,” Ban told reporters.

    Topping the United Nations agenda are conflicts in Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, Iraq and elsewhere, and a refugee and migrant crisis that saw a record 65.3 million people uprooted worldwide last year.

    “More than ever, we need an America that is committed to world affairs, including at the United Nations,” French U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said.

    A senior Security Council diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump’s foreign policy had so far “not been very coherent” and his victory did not bode well for the future effectiveness of the council.

    “The assumption is that (a Trump administration) will be less engaged with U.N. than (President Barack) Obama’s administration, which was more committed to working for collective solutions than previous U.S. administrations,” the diplomat said.

    Several U.N. diplomats noted a lack clarity from Trump on foreign policy.

    “We have not really heard a very clear indication of where he is going,” Iraq’s U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told reporters on Wednesday, adding that he believed the United Nations would remain relevant.

    “If there is any change in the policy we will then determine later on what we’re going to do with that,” he said. “Others were saying this is similar to Brexit, but this is what the Americans selected.”

    Yemen’s U.N. Ambassador Khaled Alyemany said he hoped the “new president will contribute positively to resolve the crises in the Middle East,” acknowledging that Trump had not laid out a foreign policy plan for people to see.

    The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein, last month warned that the world would be in danger if Trump was elected president. Zeid would continue to call out any Trump policies or practices that undermine or violate human rights, his spokesman said.

    A western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, summed up how Trump’s victory could impact the United Nations: “I think there will be a long hangover.”

      Billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed is making nice toward President-elect Donald Trump, after he demanded that Trump exit the primary race last year.

      Back in December 2015, the Saudi prince acted as if he was in a position to direct U.S. politicians.

      The prince is supposedly worth roughly $24.8 billion — not as much as Trump’s other billionaire critics, Mark Zuckerberg, for example — but enough to be comfortable when socializing with Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg or Carlos Slim, the Mexican part-owner of the New York Times.

    Pim Fortuyn, the hero of Rotterdam, the man who shook the country awake, once said, “Do not aim for what is possible, but what is imaginable.” He wanted to make clear that for us, the Dutch, nothing is impossible.

    Pim Fortuyn was right. Nothing is impossible for us. We are Dutch.

    Look at our country. We have single-handedly created this unique and beautiful land. We are the only people in the world living in a country which for the largest part we created ourselves. A great achievement.

    We not only created our own land, but we also explored the world. We have sailed all the seas. We founded New York and discovered Australia. Sometimes, it seems like we have forgotten it all. Forgotten what we are capable of. What we are capable of when we put our mind to it. And maybe that is our problem. We must dare to think big again. Because where there is a will, there is a way.

    And yes, I know. Many things are bothering us. There is also much to be angry about, and rightfully so. This government has destroyed our country with its austerity policies and has allowed our country to be colonized by Islam. But let’s start aiming for the imaginable. Let us liberate our country.

    • Here’s hoping that, at the earliest opportunity, Trump will show some serious support for Geert Wilders. This Dutchman’s courage has been nothing, if not astounding.

  19. Turkey Converts Hagia Sophia to Mosque

    The process of converting the historic Hagia Sophia church-then-museum in Istanbul into a mosque, in the works for the past three years, now seems to have been finalized.

    In 2013, the deputy prime minister of Turkey Bulent Arinc at the time, while speaking to reporters, signaled that Hagia Sophia Museum would be used as a mosque.

    “We currently stand next to the Hagia Sophia Mosque … we are looking at a sad Hagia Sophia, but hopefully we will see it smiling again soon,” Arinc said during the opening ceremony of a new Carpet Museum, located next to the ancient Hagia Sophia, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet had reported.

    The pro-government Turkish newspaper Sabah ran a story on June 1, 2016 entitled, “Historic Moments at Hagia Sophia. The longing is about to be over!… The mosque of Hagia Sophia will witness historic moments in the month of Ramadan…”

    Remember when talking about seceding because of a lost presidential election was racist? It’s not anymore. It’s good progressive behavior. That and fantasizing about a presidential assassination. Dissent will once again be the new patriotism. And the filibuster will be the guardian institution of democracy. But first secession. Lots and lots of secession.

    Many in Silicon Valley are freaked out at the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency. But with the race seemingly getting tighter, one tech titan took things a little further by saying that he’d push for California to secede from the nation if Trump were to win.

    Shervin Pishevar, a well-known investor in lots of startups and the co-founder of Hyperloop One, made the provocative comment in a tweet this evening:

    Tonight, another tech leader, Dave Morin, said he sympathized with Pishevar’s proposal and would “partner” with him on it. Morin is also an investor and was a co-founder of the social network Path.

    BuzzFeed is trying to map out what it would take to secede.

    Law professor Eugene Volokh said … it depends on how Americans feel.

    While calling the question “foolish and pretty obviously empty posturing,” Volokh suggested, in 2010, that the Civil War tells us little:

    The United Nations continues to serve as the Palestinians’ battering ram to try and destroy the legitimacy of the Jewish state of Israel. Between the Organization of Islamic Cooperation-influenced UN Human Rights Council, the Division for Palestinian Rights, the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Human Rights Practices Affecting the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, more UN resources and time are devoted to the advocacy of the Palestinian cause than to virtually any other issue.

    The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has also been used to advance the Islamists’ Palestinian agenda, which went into high gear after the admission of Palestine to UNESCO with full membership privileges in 2011. Not satisfied with UNESCO’s recent outrageous resolution using only Arabic names for the Temple Mount and Western Wall, and condemning Israel for conducting archeological excavations in and around Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority now wants UNESCO to demand that Israel “surrender” the Dead Sea Scrolls. This is yet another example of the Palestinians’ strategy to use UN bodies to help them rob the Jewish people of their historic association with the land of Israel.

    As Israeli Ambassador to UNESCO Carmel Shama-Hacohen was quoted in Israel Hayom as saying in criticizing the Palestinians’ latest gambit, “This is another provocative and audacious, attempt by the Palestinians to rewrite history. The Dead Sea Scrolls are factual and weighty archeological evidence of the presence of the Jewish people in the land of Israel.”
