LONDON, Oct 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Yazidi women and girls who survived being held as sex slaves by Islamic State urgently need better care and support to recover from the horrific abuse they suffered in captivity, which has led some to attempt suicide, Amnesty International said on Monday.

Gang-raped, tortured, deprived of food and traded among militants during their imprisonment, they need counseling, medical treatment and financial help that they are not getting, it said.

Islamic State (IS) militants, who control a swathe of Iraq and Syria, have killed or enslaved thousands of Yazidis since overrunning the town of Sinjar in northern Iraq in August 2014.

Young girls were taken as sex slaves, while boys were trained as fighters.

One Yazidi woman, abducted with five of her children, said her 13-year-old daughter set herself on fire following her release and died three days later, according to Amnesty researchers who visited the Kurdish region of Iraq in August.

“She said she could not take it any more. She was in pain all the time, she cried all the time,” her mother was quoted as saying in Amnesty’s report.

(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – Iraqi media outlets reported on Wednesday, that an unknown sniper started to pursue the members of the Islamic State in four neighborhoods of Mosul, amid significant popular interaction.

Al Sumaria News stated that the accelerating events in the last 24 hours contributed to the emergence of the sniper in four residential neighborhoods in the city, and added that the sniper shot patrols belong to ISIS and injured a number of members.

“The emergence of the ‘Sniper of Mosul’, as the residents call him, increased the pace of the popular resistance against the ISIS,” Al Sumaria added. “The presence of the sniper in four neighborhoods emphasizes that there are many snipers and not only one,” Al Sumaria explained.

The media outlet also declared that rebellious youths started to form combat detachments based on previous military experience to fight the ISIS members.

Yesterday, Mosul started to show signs of a popular armed uprising against the Islamic State, where a group of armed rebellious residents attacked a headquarters of ISIS and destroyed six patrols in less than five hours in the city.

Emphasizing Islamabad’s willingness to start the dialogue process again, an official of Pakistan’s foreign ministry reportedly told The Nation, “Pakistan did not want the region to be pushed to war”.

“Washington has told us the whole West and India doubt Pakistan’s credentials on anti-terrorism war. They are convinced regarding our efforts for talks but believe India may be right to doubt us,” the Times of India quoted an unnamed official as saying.

“Pakistan had complained to the US that India was avoiding talks despite multiple offers from Pakistan”, the official added.

Hungary’s fiercely anti-migrant Prime Minister Viktor Orban shows little humility, and is opening a Pandora’s box of problems for an already shaky European Union.

    Key points:

Viktor Orban has now put forward the harshest anti-migration measures in Europe
He is pressuring the EU to scrap its mandatory refugee quotas
But a former finance minister says Mr Orban’s migrant policies are “not acceptable”
After he spent nearly $47 million on advertising, stoking security fears and promoting a “no” vote at a recent referendum on accepting a refugee quota handed out by the EU, only one-third of the country’s 10 million people turned out to vote.

It was, by any measure, an embarrassment. By not reaching over 50 per cent of voters, the referendum was declared legally invalid.

Undaunted, the charismatic strongman is claiming a mandate to change the country’s constitution. He argued that 98 per cent of those who voted rejected the EU’s plan.

    WASHINGTON
The anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks is claiming that an elaborate and somewhat wacky smear campaign has targeted the group’s founder, Julian Assange, to paint him as a pedophile and Russian client.

WikiLeaks said the smear efforts, which it’s outlined in tweets and a series of documents over the past two days, include a sham offer from the Russian government to pay Assange $1 million to promote a women’s dating site and a separate scheme to link Assange to a criminal case in the Bahamas.

The assertions are the latest twist in events that have kept Assange and WikiLeaks at center stage of the presidential campaign. The smears come as WikiLeaks releases tens thousands of emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee and from the personal email account of campaign chairman John Podesta.

    • The left always smears the people who are critical of them and their actions. He is lucky the left can’t get their hands on his computer of they would plant child porn on it.

  6. Please, keep in mind that this is CNN’s watered down commentary:

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/20/politics/obama-personal-emails-podesta-wikileaks-hack/index.html

One of the emails with the subject line “Diversity” to Obama is about potential cabinet choices for his new administration. The email is from Michael Froman, who at the time was a Citibank executive, and went on to serve as US trade representative in the Obama administration.
The email lists potential African American, Latino and Asian American candidates — as well as female candidate options — for Obama to consider appointing for his cabinet.
Clinton, who was Obama’s rival in the 2008 Democratic primary, is listed as a potential secretary candidate to head the State Department or the Department of Health and Human Services.

  7. For the WTF files: obviously, this is very significant, but I have no clue as to how it fits into the greater picture…..please, help me figure this one out:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-vatican-china-deal-idUSKCN12L031

Representatives from the Vatican and China are expected to meet before the end of the month in Rome in an effort to finalize a deal on the ordination of bishops on the mainland, a move aimed at ending a longstanding dispute, according to Catholic Church sources familiar with the negotiations.

The Church sources also told Reuters that China is preparing to ordain at least two new bishops before the end of the year and these appointments would have the blessing of the Vatican. A person with ties to the leadership in Beijing confirmed that these ordinations would go ahead.

For more than six decades, China’s ruling Communist Party has strongly opposed Rome’s right to ordain Chinese bishops in a bitter contest for authority over as many as 10 million Catholics on the mainland. Bishops, priests and lay Catholics loyal to Rome have faced persecution, which has sparked skepticism over the détente in some Catholic quarters.

    • The Vatican wants Priests that have been taught at a Catholic Seminary and believes in God. The Chinese want Priests that are taught at communist schools, don’t really believe in God and will report everything they hear in confession to the government. Up until now the Catholic Church has rarely if ever ordained the Priests that China want ordained.

    • Not really, Russia and China have been rivals for well over a Century and will remain rivals. China wants large portions of Siberia so they can get their hands on the un touched mineral resources. Russia wants to keep that terrority in their possession. Both want to block the other from having a lot of influence in the South China Sea, so since the Philippines have started to move into China’s sphere of influence Russia is stepping up to try and pull them to the Russian side.

Paris (AFP) – From Brexit to the rise of Donald Trump, 2016 has been a humbling year for political forecasters. In France, could they be wrong again in writing off the far-right’s prospects in next year’s presidential election?

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s National Front, certainly thinks so. She sees signs of encouragement from Britain, the United States and across Europe where mass migration, inequality and terrorism have eroded old certainties.

Conventional wisdom holds that she will make it into the second round of the election next April and then lose, when centre-right and left-wing voters will back a more mainstream candidate.

This would be a similar outcome to the 2002 election when her estranged father caused a political earthquake in European politics by reaching the second round — where he was defeated by Jacques Chirac.

  9. Wynn: Printing Money Degrades Living Standard, Causes Anger; Healthcare Goes Up, Product Doesn’t Get Better

Casino magnate Steve Wynn expresses his disappointment at the lack of discussion of the economy during the course of the presidential election in an interview on Thursday’s Hannity. Wynn also weighed in on the debate describing it long on negativity and short on substance.

Wynn said the printing of money by the U.S. Treasury under the guidance from the U.S. Federal Reserve and the national debt have not been properly addressed albeit a short segment at the final debate.

  10. Maduro foes say they are barred from leaving Venezuela

CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuelan opposition leaders said on Friday they were banned from leaving Venezuela, adding to outrage over the suspension of their drive for a recall referendum against unpopular socialist leader Nicolas Maduro.

Various opposition figures published a document purporting to be from a court in Valencia state ordering eight people, including opposition coalition leader Jesus Torrealba and twice-presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, to stay in Venezuela.

“They are wasting their time once again. Wait to hear what we have to say in the next few hours,” tweeted Capriles, who has led the campaign for a plebiscite against Maduro.

    “It’s gratuitous aggression,” added Torrealba.

The document published by the opposition leaders only included a list of names and did not give reasons for the ban.

But it may be related to allegations by government officials that the opposition used fraud in an initial signature drive earlier this year to kick-start the referendum process.

  11. Neighborhood Mob Leaves 2 Louisiana Officers Hospitalized

    http://www.breitbart.com/texas/2016/10/19/neighborhood-mob-leaves-2-louisiana-officers-hospitalized/

ST. LANDRY PARISH, Louisiana – Two police officers were put into the hospital after being attacked by a neighborhood mob while they were attempting to investigate a hit-and-run incident.

The St. Landry Parish, Louisiana officers were originally called out to a neighborhood block for a reported individual driving recklessly, according to a WBRZ report.

Witnesses to the hit-and-run accident said the driver of the car lost control, striking a tree and parked car before fleeing the scene.

The officers eventually found the vehicle at a nearby home and approached the residents, where the driver Lybeth Hardy and her 15-year-old son answered the door, though she would not admit to who was driving at the time.

Hardy and her son reportedly cursed the officers and refused to answer questions about the incident, while also not allowing the officers to speak with Hardy’s husband, the owner of the vehicle.

  12. The Middle East Is Becoming More Dangerous for the U.S. Navy

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval ships’ frequent, aggressive behavior towards the U.S. Navy has hit new levels in the past few months, triggering several risky encounters in the Persian Gulf. Why have the waters in the Middle East become more dangerous recently?

The IRGC wants everyone to know nothing changed after the nuclear deal. For the IRGC, our presence in the Persian Gulf is illegitimate and fundamentally not deserving of respect.

Iranian naval forces are making large strides in weapons and surveillance, investing in increasingly accurate cruise missiles, sophisticated mines, midget submarines, and even a new high-speed, helicopter-carrying catamaran.

    https://www.aei.org/publication/five-reasons-the-middle-east-is-becoming-more-dangerous-for-the-us-navy/

    • Our Naval vessels haven’t been shot at for a few days, what are the Iranians up to? It is their puppets that are shooting at our ships.

    • Historically the midget subs are useful against targets that are docked or anchored in a sheltered location. But that could change as technology gets better.

  13. HEZBOLLAH’S WOMEN AREN’T HAPPY

As their sons and ‘temporary husbands’ are ripped from them to fight a proxy war in Syria, grieving mothers and brides are compensated with only a promise of spiritual redemption from Sayyeda Zaynab, a granddaughter of the Prophet

Hizballah’s institutions constitute an alternative economic structure that hires and attracts [both] men and women. A girl in Hizballah’s community is brought up in the organization’s schools. She is expected to work in Hizballah institutions, marry a Hizballah fighter, and promote Hizballah’s values both outside and inside her family. The “Party of God” knows that a disciplined and committed woman can raise disciplined and committed fighters. It is a system that physically reproduces itself.

But the endless war in Syria is producing cracks in the system, and women are no longer as engaged as they used to be—or being compensated for their sacrifices the way that men are. . . . [T]he wives of the new recruits . . . are not necessarily Hizballah members and are generally not committed to the ideology or the war, but they are part of the community that the party allegedly is protecting. They are mostly from poor families. [If widowed], these women tend to suffer [the most] financially. . . .

Women are Hizballah’s main internal problem. The war in Syria means they are losing sons, brothers, and husbands. It is marginalizing their role in the party, and pushing the poorest among them to the edge of survival. . . . The communal frustration and inequities that the war continues to exacerbate and deepen may soon lead to an explosion.

  14. This is important. Western capitulation to sharia is well-advanced:
UNESCO’s Denial of Jewish History and the Western Servility That Enables It

A Muslim country’s recognition of the Jewish people’s right to any [of the biblical holy] places is considered by Islam to be heresy. . . . Any Israeli effort to sway the Muslim vote, including among countries with which it has ties, is destined to fail.

A month ago, the French newspaper Le Figaro published an interview with a researcher who analyzes seventh-grade textbooks, as this is the grade in which the French curriculum teaches about Islam. His main conclusion was that [the books] “swept under the rug anything that could interfere with conflict-free teaching of the history of Islamic culture, in a manner bordering on servility—all in the service of dogmatic praise for a shared life.” The researcher raised examples not only of ignored facts, but also of factual distortions.

The reason behind this sort of behavior on the part of Western countries is fear, whether of conflict with their own Muslim communities or of conflict with the Muslim countries that buy tens of millions of dollars of their products. . . . Israel must refuse to be the scapegoat for the West’s obsequiousness. The decision to cut ties with UNESCO is an important step in that direction.

  15. The German Left’s Undeclared War on Israel

[East Germany’s] leaders, many of whom had opposed Hitler, [nonetheless] internalized the lethal anti-Semitism of the Nazis, which led inexorably to their desire to dismantle Israel. . . . Herf supplies exhaustive evidence of the German Democratic Republic’s secret military deliveries to Israel’s enemies in the Middle East—including the bellicose Hafez al-Assad regime in Syria, which was a strategic partner for East Germany. . . .

[Furthermore], the GDR supplied weapons and sophisticated training to the Palestinians in exchange for their refraining from carrying out terrorist attacks in Western Europe. In other words, East Germany largely subcontracted its war against the Jews to the Arabs in the Middle East. . . .

Herf [also] does not let the West German government off the hook. A scarcely covered topic in modern German history is Chancellor Willy Brandt’s abandonment of Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. After a surprise attack by multiple Arab armies, Israel was on the ropes, desperate for arms and ammunition. To the frustration of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, Brandt stuck to an ironclad “neutral position toward the conflict in the Middle East,” [refusing to allow the U.S.] to use the port of Bremerhaven to deliver weapons to the Israelis. . . .

While the extreme left in West Germany was not part of the GDR, it benefited from East Germany’s sponsorship of Palestinian terrorists. This year marked the 40th anniversary of the hijacking of an Air France plane to Entebbe by a team of German and Palestinian terrorists in 1976. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the West German Revolutionary Cell’s members Wilfried Böse and Brigitte Kuhlmann carried out the hijacking.

  16. Iran’s Allies Escalate in Yemen, Threatening International Shipping Routes

Since the beginning of October 2016, the Houthi-Yemeni conflict has assumed a new naval and international dimension that could endanger civilian freedom of navigation in the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which serves as a gateway for oil tankers headed to Europe through the Suez Canal. The Houthis are backed and armed by Iran; the Yemen army is backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition.

On October 1, 2016, the Houthi-allied Yemeni Republican Guard launched an anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) near the Red Sea port of Mocha in the strategic Bab el-Mandeb shipping lane. It struck a humanitarian ship in the service of the United Arab Emirates Navy.

The United States dispatched three battleships to the area. On October 9, Iranian-backed Houthi militants fired on the USS Mason in the same area; on October 11, they fired two more cruise missiles at the ship. No damages or injuries were reported.

In retaliation, the USS Nitze launched Tomahawk cruise missile strikes knocking out three Houthi coastal radar sites “that were active during previous attacks and attempted attacks on ships in the Red Sea.” The strikes, authorized by President Barack Obama, represent Washington’s first direct military action against suspected Houthi-controlled targets in Yemen’s conflict.

Apparent in Yemen are the absence of the American player and the weakening of its overall policy in the Middle East. Not far from Yemen in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian fast boats continue to harass and provoke American warships, which operate without any appropriate response. Meanwhile, Iran continues to build its naval and missile power.

Playing down the incident will play into Iranian propaganda and bolster Iran’s already overconfident and defiant stance.

        • Cruisers, Carriers, Frigates, Riverine craft, Mine Layers. There is also destroyers and destroyer escorts. The destroyer is slightly bigger and better armed, the DE serve as escort ships for carriers, convoys and cripples trying to make it back to a dry dock.

War ships are any armed vessel in the service of a Navy, Battleships are the largest class of warship. I think there is a mothballed Battleship being used as a museum somewhere in the Northeast.

FYI the mothballed Battleships aren’t in commission but the states that have them are required by law to keep them in seaworthy condition and that all of the main and secondary guns in firing order. It would take about 1 to 2 weeks to put new commo suites in along with the command and control links.

The Missouri (The Mighty Mo) was the last US Battleship build. It has 18 inch belt armor, 16 inch (diameter) main guns with 5 inch secondary guns. The Navy vets assure me that the books are right and that the Mighty Mo would survive a near miss from a Nuke.

Using sub-caliber saboted ammo that is radar controlled it can hit a target the size of a small car at 50 yards.

One of my Sunday School Teaches served on the Missouri during WWII and possibly Korea. The number is BB63. The BB designation is nicknamed big boys.

          • I forgot the MTBs or PT Boats (MTB Motor Torpedo Boat, PT Patrol Torpedo Boat). I don’t know what the designation they are using for the modern versions.

The original name of destroyers was Torpedo boat destroyer.

  17. The Vatican Submits to Islam (2006-2016)

“[Pope Benedict XVI] has doubted publicly that it can be accommodated in a pluralistic society… and tempered his support for a programme of inter-religious dialogue run by Franciscan monks at Assisi. He has embraced the view of Italian moderates and conservatives that the guiding principle of inter-religious dialogue must be reciprocità. That is, he finds it naive to permit the building of a Saudi-funded mosque, Europe’s largest, in Rome, while Muslim countries forbid the construction of churches and missions.” — Christopher Caldwell, Financial Times.

In that lecture, Benedict did what in the Islamic world is forbidden: freely discussing faith. He said that God is different from Allah.

Since then, apologies to the Islamic world have become the official Vatican policy. Pope Francis denied that Islam itself is violent and claimed that the potential for violence lies within every religion, including Catholicism. Previously, Pope Francis said there is “a world war” but denied that Islam has any role in it.

“It is clear that Muslims have an ultimate goal: conquering the world…But we find it hard to recognize this reality and to respond by defending the Christian faith (…) I have heard several times an Islamic idea: ‘what we failed to do with the weapons in the past we are doing today with the birth rate and immigration’. The population is changing. If this keeps up, in countries like Italy, the majority will be Muslim (…) And what is the most important achievement? Rome.” — Monsignor Raymond Burke, US Catholic leader.

Turkey, Iraq reach agreement ‘in principle’ on Mosul, U.S. says

Turkey and Iraq have reached an agreement in principle that could eventually allow a Turkish role in the campaign to retake the city of Mosul from Islamic State, U.S. defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Friday after talks with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

“I think there’s agreement there in principle but now we’re down to the practicalities of that … and that’s what we’re working through,” he told reporters as he ended his trip to Ankara.

    =============================================
Turkey: Ash Carter visits Turkey for talks on international security

    • reuters – Pentagon chief to stress Iraq sovereignty in Turkey talks

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said he would stress the need to respect Iraq’s sovereignty during a visit on Friday to Turkey, which has been locked in a dispute with Baghdad over who should participate in the campaign to retake Mosul from Islamic State.

Carter, acknowledging it was a delicate issue, declined to explicitly say whether he thought Turkey should be allowed toparticipate in the operations in Iraq. Washington in the past has deferred that matter to Baghdad.

“Of course we’ll talk about that. And yes, of course there are sensitivities there. We conduct ourselves, and the coalition does, respecting Iraqi sovereignty. That’s an important principle of ours,” Carter said.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has been frustrated that NATO member Turkey has not been more involved in the U.S.-backed assault on Mosul and angered by Washington’s support for Kurdish militia fighters battling Islamic State in Syria.

Asked about Turkish air strikes that pounded a group of Kurdish fighters allied to a U.S.-backed militia in northernSyria, Carter said he was not certain about what precisely transpired.

“I can’t clarify that now,” he said.

A U.S. defense official said on Thursday the specific groups struck by Turkish jets were not themselves U.S.-backed, but were “close to and friendly with” the fighters Washington is working with.

Ankara has been in a row with Iraq over the presence of Turkish troops at the Bashiqa camp near Mosul, as well as over who should take part in the offensive in the largely Sunni Muslim city of Mosul, once part of the Ottoman empire and still seen by Turkey as firmly within its sphere of influence.

Erdogan has warned of sectarian bloodshed if the Iraqi army relies on Shi’ite militia fighters.

A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged Turkey had legitimate security concerns in Iraq but added that Washington had been clear that “no military should be operating in areas (of Iraq) where they aren’t invited expressly.”

“We have been working behind the scenes to get the Iraqis and the Turks to come to an understanding about how we’re going to move forward on Mosul,” the official said.

Carter steered clear of directly commenting on the matter ahead of his talks in Turkey. He acknowledged the United States was partnering with both Iraq and Turkey in the fight against Islamic State.

“These are two close friends of ours. In the case of Turkey, it’s a NATO ally. And we want to keep everybody focused on the objective here, which is to defeat ISIL, because that is a threat to all three of us,” Carter said.

A refugee asylum center in Stockholm burned down during the early hours of Friday, in what police believe was an arson attack

Two members of staff and nine residents were evacuated from the fire, and there were no reported casualties.

The center staff called the police after hearing noises and seeing lights outside the building. The fire is being investigated as an arson attack.

Another refugee centre in southern Stockholm was attacked last Sunday. According to the police, there is no indication that the attacks were linked.

  21. Russia: US-led coalition works against IS in Syria “quite moderately” – Lavrov

ussian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that US-led coalition in Syria has been working against so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) “quite moderately,” speaking at a joint press conference with his Guatemalan counterpart Carlos Raul Morales in Moscow, Friday.

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “We’ve also been cooperating [with Guatemala] in the United Nations. And today we have discussed in detail issues of our joint agenda such as situation in the Middle East and North Africa, mostly in Syria, as well as uniting efforts in fight against international terrorism and extremism.”

SOT, Carlos Raul Morales, Guatemalan Foreign Minister (Spanish): “We’ve spoken about the UN, about the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in Syria. And we both share and support those principles reflected in the UN Charter and those goals that the UN sets for itself. These are: support of peace and security in the entire world, respect for human rights as well as population development.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Statements made by the Americans on how US-led coalition treats Jabhat al-Nusra and that Nusra is not a target of the coalition have not become any sort of revelation for us. During our regular contacts with US Secretary of State John Kerry, I’ve been constantly pointing out on the fact that the coalition has been working against ISIL quite moderately. However, speaking about Jabhat al-Nusra, we see neither results nor at least any attempts to suppress this terrorist organisation.”

    • SYRIA – ALEPPO – Russia: 30 suicide-bombers among militants planning Aleppo offensive – MoD official

Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Sergei Rudskoi, stated that at least eight civilians were killed with more than 30 civilians as well as three Russian officers injured as the result of militant fire in Aleppo suburbs close to the humanitarian corridors, speaking from Moscow, on Friday.

SOT, Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi, Head of Main Operational Directorate of General Staff of Russian Armed Forces – Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (Russian): “The Russian Federation and the Syrian Arab Republic continue to fulfill their obligation to normalise the humanitarian situation in Aleppo. We have created all the necessary conditions for the passage of civilians and withdrawal of militants as well as for the evacuation of sick and wounded from the eastern districts of Aleppo. All flights of the Russian Airspace Forces and Syrian Air Forces have been fully stopped over the past four days. Planes do not come closer to the city than ten kilometres.”

SOT, Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi, Head of Main Operational Directorate of General Staff of Russian Armed Forces – Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (Russian): “At the same time terrorists are doing everything to prevent a passage of civilians and withdrawal of members of the terrorist groups from eastern Aleppo. All our appeals to our American colleagues to positively influence the militants of the so-called moderate opposition and to persuade them to stop firing, to release the civilians or to leave themselves remain unanswered.”

SOT, Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi, Head of Main Operational Directorate of General Staff of Russian Armed Forces – Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (Russian): “As a result, humanitarian corridors for the passage of civilians are still blocked by terrorists and being shelled. Militants continue to fire with mortars and rocket systems on residential neighbourhoods, including areas with humanitarian corridors in the western part of Aleppo. During the last 24 hours, eight people were killed and more than 30 civilians injured by terrorist fire. As a result of one of the attacks, three Russian officers of the Russian centre for reconciliation of opposing sides were slightly wounded.”

SOT, Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi, Head of Main Operational Directorate of General Staff of Russian Armed Forces – Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (Russian): “Terrorists are taking advantage of the ceasefire. They have been concentrating around Aleppo and preparing for the next breakthrough in the eastern parts of the city. In the last 24 hours, more than 200 militants arrived in the settlements of Mansura, Karasi and district 1070. A group made up of illegal armed groups with more than 1,200 people including about 30 suicide-bombers is being prepared for the Aleppo offensive from the south-western areas. They have tanks, armoured vehicles and more than 20 pickups with heavy machine guns. Terrorist groups operating in the area of Aleppo continue to receive arms and ammunition. Among other things, they began to receive portable air defence missile systems.”

  22. London City Airport evacuated: Hundreds of passengers ordered after ‘chemical incident’

London City Airport has been evacuated after reports of a “chemical incident”, with no flights able to take off or land as investigations continue.

About 500 passengers and staff were ordered to leave the terminal after an alarm was activated at 4.30pm on Friday afternoon.

London Fire Brigade said a number of passengers felt unwell just after 4pm on Friday.

A brigade spokesman said: “Three fire engines and a range of specialist appliances have been called to reports of a chemical incident at London City Airport this afternoon.

“Around 500 members of the public and staff have been evacuated and there are reports of a number of passengers feeling unwell.”

  23. Muslims Protest in Front of Colosseum Over Mosque Closures (abcnews, Oct 21, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/muslims-protest-front-colosseum-mosque-closures-42970249

“Hundreds of Muslims have gathered near Rome’s Colosseum to pray and protest the closures of mosques and other places of worship.

An imam led the group in chants of “Allah Akbar” which means “God is great,” as they kneeled to the ground facing the Colosseum.

The protest was organized by a Bangladeshi group, Dhuumcatu, which has complained that Muslim places of worship in Rome have been branded illegal by authorities for various building violations. The group wants City Hall to intervene.

Police confirmed the closure of some places of prayer. In a statement, police said authorities guarantee freedom of thought, but within a legal framework.

The anti-immigrant Northern League demanded to know why the group was allowed to stage a protest in such a visible and significant location for tourism.”

  24. Migrant crisis isn’t under control EU admits: Schengen’s internal borders here to STAY (express, Oct 21, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/723907/Migrant-crisis-EU-Schengen-internal-borders-remain

“SCHENGEN countries should be allowed to continue internal border controls until the European Union can establish control over the migrant crisis, Brussel leaders have concluded.

During a Summit on Thursday, EU leaders admitted the checks implemented in countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Germany could still be necessary, as a large number of migrants on the Continent remain unregistered.

The strict border controls were implemented last year after a mass influx of asylum-seekers placed huge strains on public services.

According to the so-called Schengen Borders Code, member countries can impose temporary border controls within the otherwise borderless Schengen area for up to two years.

However the countries must apply for extensions from the EU if they want to continue the border checks, as it could threaten the “right to freedom of movement”.

The latest extension is set the expire next month and five nations, including Austria and Norway, have now requested permission to maintain the internal borders.

Express(.)co(.)uk reported on Monday that Denmark’s Immigration and integration minister, Inger Støjberg, was cooperating with other Schengen nations to force the EU to grant the renewal.

The politician said: “We are working to get sent a joint letter.

“It will say we want an extension of border controls on the basis that there is no control of the external borders and that there are still unregistered refugees and migrants in Europe.

“And to a great extent, the terrorist threat is real and so we must control who comes to Europe.”

Ms Støjberg added: “I consider it a necessity that we extend now. I can only say that we must have the internal border as long as needed.”

Speaking after the Brussels Summit, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven confirmed Sweden is considering maintain the internal border.

He said: “Gaining permission from the European Commission would give it more freedom of action.”

In the joint-application to Brussels chiefs, it was stated the EU’s failure to implement the Dublin Agreement, which states that refugees should be processed by the first EU country in which they arrive, was one of the key reasons for the continued internal borders.”

  25. ‘You are unbelievers!’ Horror as jailed jihadist pours boiling hot OIL over cellmate (express, Oct 21, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/723874/Jihadist-French-Islamist-boiling-oil-cellmate-sentenced-four-years-prison

“A TEENAGER French radical Islamist has been sentenced to four years in prison for throwing a jug of scalding oil at his cellmate and brutally attacking two prison guards.

The young man had already been convicted of terror-related charges and of assaulting a group of police officers, and was only 15 days into his initial prison sentence when the attack took place on August 1.

The jihadist is said to have heated the oil in a pan before aiming the boiling hot liquid at a prison guard, who was walking the terrorist’s cellmate back to the shared cell.

But the young man missed his target, and threw the hot oil all over his fellow inmate’s face instead, partially disfiguring him.

The prison guard received minor burns to his face and forearm after being hit by a few drops but was not badly injured.

Seemingly untamed, the radicalised teenager beat up another prison guard just three days after the oil attack…”

  26. Girls ‘ferried for sex at Kurdish car wash’, children’s charity Barnardo’s claims (express, Oct 21, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/723909/Girls-sex-trafficking-Kurdish-car-wash

“CAR washes run by Kurdish migrants have been identified as possible child sexual exploitation hotspots in a report by the children’s charity Barnardo’s.

Workers are suspected of grooming young white British girls and ferrying them from one location to another.

A police raid on five car washes in Hartlepool also revealed a secret room with beds.

The Barnardo’s report, called Child Sexual Exploitation on Teesside, claimed the car washes are a hub for trafficking girls in Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees.

The report states: “It was reported girls were taken from the car wash in Hartlepool to Middlesbrough and Stockton to go to parties. Similarly, girls were known to travel from Stockton to the Hartlepool car wash.

“One worker reported, ‘I have seen the same girl from Stockton in two different car washes.’ There was evidence of young people being moved between areas for the purposes of exploitation.”

The report said Kurds were singling out girls absconding from care homes…”

  27. Gary Lineker admits he’s getting a ‘spanking’ over his child migrant tweets but says the BBC won’t sack him for calling out critics as ‘racist’ (dailymail, Oct 21, 2016)

“Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker today admitted he is getting a ‘spanking’ for calling people who questioned the age of child migrants ‘racist’.

The former footballer, 55, also insisted the BBC would not sack him over his comments.

Speaking after receiving a barrage of abuse online he said: ‘Getting a bit of a spanking today, but things could be worse – Imagine, just for a second, being a refugee having to flee from your home.

He added: ‘Must say though, I’m rather chuffed to have been called a ‘luvvie’.’

The 55-year-old also responded to one Twitter user who claimed he ‘deserved’ to lose his job, saying ‘I won’t’.

Mr Lineker’s tweets this week have split opinion, with some congratulating him and others accusing him of breaching BBC impartiality rules.

Conservative MP David Davies said: ‘I hope he apologises. I question if the BBC should be employing him when he seems to be using his fame to push out his rather emotive and controversial views.’

Tory MP Alec Shelbrooke said: ‘He needs to decide if he’s a political activist or BBC sports journalist – he can’t be both.’

The BBC has said he is a freelance employee and is giving his own personal views.

The retired footballer’s comments were met with a barrage of abuse from users of the social media site Twitter, forcing Lineker to defend his views…”

    • Of course the BBC loves what he says.
      It loves Muslims.
And here’s more of its propaganda.
“Mistakes about race were at the heart of the Rwandan genocide; the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was shaped by American nationalism and chauvinism about Muslims; nationality is clearly stopping us doing our part in dealing with things such as the refugee crisis, because we feel like it will threaten our own identity,” says Appiah. “This crisis that we are facing now is rooted in these moral and intellectual confusions about identity. And it is very costly to keep making these mistakes.”

  28. Cost of France-Qatar friendship: New book stirs up s?andal among French governing elite (RT, Oct 21, 2016)
    https://www.rt.com/news/363654-france-qatar-book-scandal/

“A political scandal is brewing in France after newspaper Le Point published excerpts from the book ‘Notre tres chers emirs’. It shines light on French politicians who allegedly accepted payments from Qatar in exchange for favors.

The title of the book by journalists George Malbrunot and Christian Chesnot translates as ‘our very dear emirs’. As in English, ‘very dear’ can also mean ‘very expensive’.

“For New Year’s Eve, Mohammed al-Kuwari gave the French parliament France-Qatar friendly group Rolex watches or shopping vouchers for luxury stores,” a passage from the book reads.

Published on October 20, the book looks at French MP Jean-Marie Le Guen, among others.

The book alleges that for a sum of €10,000 (US$10,900) a month, Le Guen proposed to ensure that Qatar would not get any bad raps from MPs and senators of the ruling Socialist Party or other members of the Government…”

  29. Norway: Fence erected on Russian-Norwegian border to stop Syrian refugees

The Norwegian government continued construction of a fence at the Storskog border crossing in the Sor-Varanger province, along the border with Russia, Friday, after thousands of Syrian refugees reportedly fled into the country.

The fence will be around 200m (656 feet) long and 3.5m (11.5 feet) high and is designed to make it more difficult to cross the border into the northern outpost of Europe’s passport-free Schengen zone.

In 2016, around 5,500 migrants, mainly from Syria, crossed into Norway despite having Russian residency permits. The Norwegian government is now toughening asylum rules in order to stop the mass arrival of migrants from Africa and the Middle East via the ‘Arctic route’ from Russia.

The fence is unlikely to affect Norwegian-Russian traffic due to both countries operating a visa-free regime for a short trip. Approximately 250,000 people make the trip every year.

Construction work is reported to cost Norway some four million Krones ($500,000).

  30. Trump Threatens Democracy!
Where are Trump’s critics about Obama’s executive tyranny and Hillary’s promises to swell the Federal Leviathan?

As expected, Trump’s refusal to make a pledge accepting the outcome of the election stirred up the usual hysteria on the left and the right. According to the New York Times, Trump’s response was “a remarkable statement that seemed to cast doubt on American democracy.” The other P.R. firm for progressives, the Associated Press, said Trump was “threatening to upend a fundamental pillar of American democracy.” Prominent NeverTrumper John Podhoretz was even more vehement: “It was a shocking and cravenly irresponsible thing to say, the sort of thing that threatens to rend our national fabric, and for that alone, Trump has earned his place in the history of American ignominy.” Right alongside Benedict Arnold and John Wilkes Booth, I guess.

All these hyperbolic responses are curiously similar to Hillary’s during the debate. Sniffing political opportunity with all the olfactory acuity of an outhouse rat, Hillary thundered, “Horrifying . . . He is denigrating [sic]. He is talking down our democracy. And I for one am appalled that someone the nominee of one of our two major parties would take that kind of position.” As opposed to trading uranium mines to a Russian firm in exchange for donations to her family foundation? Once again, over-the-top rhetoric that serves political interest substitutes for clear thinking and moral distinctions when it comes to Donald Trump.

  31. Will Hillary Clinton Accept the Results if She Loses?
Democracy doesn’t mean Democratic Party rule.

The headlines are in. Trump is the “anti-Democratic” candidate because he refuses to rule out challenging the results of an election that has yet to take place. Such a course of action is “beyond the pale”. It’s a threat to democracy. And it is utterly and thoroughly unacceptable.

    Except when Democrats do it.

It was the day after the election. While the Democratic Party faithful waited in the rain in Nashville, William Daley strode out and announced, “Our campaign continues”. Al Gore had called George W. Bush to withdraw his concession. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” a baffled Bush asked. “You don’t have to be snippy about it,” Gore retorted snippily.

Gore did eventually concede. Though years later he would attempt to retract his concession a second time. But his political movement never did concede. It remained a widespread belief in left-wing circles that President Bush was illegitimately elected and that President Gore was the real winner.

    How mainstream is that belief?

When Hillary dragged Gore away from playing with his Earth globe to campaign for her, the crowd booed at his mention of the election and then chanted, “You won, you won”.

    Hillary grinned and nodded.

    http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/264570/will-hillary-clinton-accept-results-if-she-loses-daniel-greenfield

    • The answer is that it depends on if there are enough states with close voting totals that can switch a loss to a victory. Remember Gore only wanted a few cherry picked districts counted not the entire state. If she starts insisting on recounts insist on the entire state being recounted.

  32. BREITBART EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Immigration Officials Erect 15ft Fence to Hide ‘Child’ Migrants

The entrance to the immigration centre welcoming busloads of ‘child’ migrants every day from Calais has been obscured by a 15ft high scaffolding and canvas fence, hiding the identities of new arrivals.

The giant barrier appeared overnight, 24 hours after the migrants began arriving with blankets over their heads. It was unveiled on the same day the first ‘child migrant’ was proven, with hard evidence, to be over 18.

Welcoming the migrants to London was a growing crowd of pro-mass migration activists, led by the Citizens UK group, who are funded by liberal billionaire George Soros and his Open Societies Foundation.[…]

  33. Clinton Foundation Co-Founder: Bill Clinton Got Expensive Gifts from Donors

Doug Band was once Bill Clinton’s equivalent of Huma Abedin. The Clinton Global Initiative was his brainchild. Which means that he knows what he’s talking about when he says things like this.

“I signed a conflict of interest policy as a board member of cgi,” he wrote in an email to John Podesta, the Clinton campaign chairman whose hacked emails were released by WikiLeaks.

“Oddly, wjc does not have to sign such a document even though he is personally paid by 3 cgi sponsors, gets many expensive gifts from them, some that are at home etc,” added Band.

“I could add 500 different examples of things like this,” he continued.

  34. Clinton Aides: Obama Knew About Her Server and Lied About It

These email leaks have enabled the intriguing experience of being a fly on the wall in the Clinton camp. And here’s what Hillary’s people were saying when Obama tried to distance himself from her rogue email server operation.

Clinton adviser Philippe Reines wrote to colleagues in the campaign office in March 2015, expressing incredulity about Mr. Obama’s claim that he found out about the server at the same time as other Americans.

“One of us should connect with the WH just so they know that the email will show his statement to not make sense,” Mr. Reines wrote.

Jennifer Palmieri, who served as White House communications director and now works for Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, suggested that Mr. Reines talk to White House press secretary Josh Earnest or his deputy, Eric Schultz.

Of course we know that’s nonsense since Obama emailed Hillary. And he did so using a pseudonym.

  35. Tufts BDS Supporters Plan ‘Direct Action’ Against Pro-Israel Students
Tufts SJP labeled Students Supporting Israel “literally a hate group.”

Over the past two weeks, the David Horowitz Freedom Center has targeted chapters of the terrorist-funded organization Students for Justice in Palestine on ten campuses. On Tuesday night, posters exposing the links between Students for Justice in Palestine and the anti-Israel terror group Hamas went up around the campus of Tufts University in Boston.

Tufts University hosted the SJP National Conference in 2014 at which students were instructed how and when to take “direct action” against supporters of Israel. Tufts SJP has repeatedly supported anti-Israel terrorism in its published works and statements and holds an annual “Israeli Apartheid” hate week during which the Hamas-inspired BDS movement against Israel is promoted. Tufts SJP also attempted to delegitimize supporters of Israel by labeling the pro-Israel campus group Students Supporting Israel “literally a hate group.”

The Freedom Center’s poster operation distributed posters across the campus which exposed the organization Students for Justice in Palestine as a campus front for Hamas terrorists and the Hamas intermediary American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). AMP was revealed in recent congressional testimony to be funneling terrorist dollars to Students for Justice in Palestine to support the Hamas-sponsored, anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign in America. Images of the posters hung at Tufts and at other campuses across the nation may be viewed here.

  36. The UN’s Shameful Purge of Historical Jewish Ties to Jerusalem
How the United Nations is helping the Palestinians’ campaign of dejudaization of Jews’ holiest sites.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) executive board passed a resolution, entitled “Occupied Palestine,” which refers to Jerusalem’s holy sites only by their Islamic names. The resolution effectively denies the historical ties of the Jewish people to the Temple Mount, proving that this dysfunctional UN body is not grounded in any educational, scientific or cultural reality at all. UNESCO is being used by Islamists, who rammed through the admission of Palestine to UNESCO with full membership privileges in 2011, to wipe away Jewish history in Jerusalem with a stroke of the pen. The purpose is to delegitimize the Jewish state. This is no surprise, considering that Islamic states such as the holocaust-denying Islamic Republic of Iran, the ISIS-funding state of Qatar and the genocide committing state of Sudan sit on UNESCO’s Executive Board.

Even UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who has had his own issues with Israel, could not abide by UNESCO’s re-writing of history. “The Secretary-General reaffirms the importance of the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls for the three monotheistic religions and stresses the importance of the religious and historical link of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian peoples to the holy site,” said a statement read by the UN Spokesperson on behalf of the Secretary General. “The Al Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram al-Sharif, the sacred shrine of Muslims, is also the Har HaBayit—or Temple Mount—whose Western Wall is the holiest place in Judaism, a few steps away from the Saint Sepulcher church and the Mount of Olives, which is revered by Christians.”

A senior Obama administration official told the Jerusalem Post that the UNESCO resolution was “one-sided,” “unhelpful” and “highly politicized.” The U.S. did vote against the resolution, but President Obama still wants to restore American taxpayers’ funding of UNESCO, which had been cut off after UNESCO granted full membership to the so-called Palestinian “state.”

  37. Clinton Foundation Employed a Now-Imprisoned Senior Muslim Brotherhood Official

Gehad El-Haddad, the now-imprisoned former spokesman for the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s so-called “Freedom and Justice Party,” was effectively the “Baghdad Bob” of the Arab Spring.

Educated in the UK and the son of a top Muslim Brotherhood leader, Gehad served as the special advisor on foreign policy to deposed Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi.

Gehad incited violence, justified the torture of protesters, recycled fake news stories, and staged fake scenes of confrontation during the 2013 Rabaa protests.

He was arrested in September 2013 after the fall of Morsi and the bloody confrontations during the breakup of the Muslim Brotherhood’s protest camps in Rabaa Square and around Cairo.

During his ascendancy in 2011 and 2012, at which time he served on the Muslim Brotherhood’s “Nahda” (Renaissance) Project to revive the caliphate and reinstitute Islamic law and also served as Morsi’s campaign spokesman, he was being paid by the Clinton Foundation.

  38. FOX News -Clinton lectured State Dept. staff on cybersecurity in 2010 video

Despite conducting her own government business through a personal “homebrew” server while secretary of state, Hillary Clinton is seen in a newly obtained video lecturing her staff of their “special duty” to recognize the importance of cybersecurity.

“The real key to cybersecurity rests with you,” Clinton says in the 2010 video, which was obtained by FoxNews.com. “Complying with department computing policies and being alert to potential threats will help protect all of us.”

Clinton goes on in the video to underscore the important work the State Department Bureau of Diplomatic Security and IT department were doing to guard against cyber-attacks. She warns hackers try to “exploit” vulnerabilities and penetrate department systems. She then urges staffers to log onto the internal cybersecurity awareness website or subscribe to their “cybersecurity awareness newsletter.”

“Together we can do our part to improve the security of the State Department and of our nation,” Clinton says.

During her interview with the FBI, according to bureau documents released last month, Clinton claimed she could not remember a number of details regarding the training or guidance she received on various areas of department protocol. The interview summary said Clinton “could not recall” any briefing or training regarding the retention of federal records or the handling of classified information.

She also claimed she could not recall receiving guidance on “email policies outlined in the Foreign Affairs Manual.”

The video marks the latest example of how Clinton ran afoul of the very practices she expected others to follow. As Fox News’ Catherine Herridge previously reported, an internal 2011 department cable shows Clinton’s office once told employees not to use personal email for security reasons.

The same year, Clinton skipped a cyber briefing that the department security team put together just for her, according to congressional investigators and an unclassified letter from the State Department.

In 2010, the same year as the video, some State Department officials were voicing concerns about Clinton’s own email and computer setup. A department report found that two Information Resource Management officials had discussed worries about the system and were told it was approved by the legal department staff.

The inspector general report said it “found no evidence that staff in the Office of the Legal Adviser reviewed or approved Secretary Clinton’s personal system.”

Further, the same report detailed a January 2011 incident where an adviser who provided tech support for the Clinton email system notified a Hillary Clinton aide that “he had to shut down the server because he believed ‘someone was trying to hack us and while they did not get in i didnt [sic] want to let them have the chance to.’”

    ==========================================

FOX News -1,000 Clinton-Petraeus emails missing from records sent to State, FBI files show

Roughly 1,000 emails between Hillary Clinton and Gen. David Petraeus were thought to be missing from the 30,000 emails provided by Clinton’s team to the State Department in December 2014, according to the newly released FBI investigative files.

Additional documents obtained through a federal lawsuit by Judicial Watch show Clinton had directed Petraeus to send her emails at her personal address, which was used for all government work during her tenure as secretary of state.

In a heavily redacted FBI interview summary from Aug. 17, 2015, a State Department employee from the Office of Information and Programs and Services (IPS), which handles Freedom of Information Act requests, discussed how Petraeus’ records apparently were not among the work-related emails provided by the former secretary’s team.

“CENTCOM records shows approximately 1,000 work-related emails between Clinton’s personal email and General David PETRAEUS, former Commander of CENTCOM and former Director of the CIA,” said the employee, whose name is redacted, according to the summary. “Most of those 1,000 emails were not believed to be included in the 30,000 emails that IPS was reviewing. Out of the 30,000 emails, IPS only had a few emails from or related to PETRAEUS as well as a few related to Leon PANETTA, former Secretary of Defense.”

The same employee reported on a January 2015 status briefing about the emails given by State Department senior official Patrick Kennedy who is now at the center of “quid pro quo” allegations – that he offered to help the FBI get more slots for agencies overseas in exchange for downgrading an email to unclassified. The FBI and State now emphasize the deal never happened.

“KENNEDY and [redacted] were each provided with two binders full of email examples of documents [redacted] believed were possibly classified. [Redacted] returned her binders to [redacted] but KENNEDY decided to keep his binders following the brief. [Redacted] was not aware of anyone in IPS or at STATE who received the rules or parameters the CLINTON team and/or WILLIAMS & Connolly used to segregate Clinton’s personal and office work emails.”

As previously reported by Fox News, there are still two missing “bankers boxes” of emails that cannot be accounted for by Hillary Clinton’s legal team Williams & Connolly.

Clinton later maintained during congressional testimony that her team read every email, but FBI Director James Comey later said that was not true and only broad search terms were used.

In addition, new emails obtained through an ongoing federal lawsuit by Judicial Watch show that on Jan. 10, 2009, Clinton told Petraeus — who was then CENTCOM commander — to use her personal address on a BlackBerry account. “If there is ever anything you need or want me to know, pls use this personal email address. All the best, Hillary,” she wrote.

One of the most intriguing and highly redacted documents released by the FBI is a witness interview with a CIA agent on June 10, 2016. The names of the FBI agents and the CIA agent and attorney are all redacted, but it is clear they were reviewing “Top Secret” emails too damaging to national security to release under any circumstances.

According to page 66, “After reviewing the email, [redacted] exclaimed [redacted] is an idiot. [redacted] further explained he believed the email was problematic.” The CIA was apparently referring to the writer of the email, adding “[redacted] expressed his opinion that DoS was not very careful.”

Fox News estimates at least 95 percent of the CIA agent’s three-page interview was blacked out. “[redacted] did not have any direct knowledge of DoS officials using unclassified or ‘barely classified’ channels [redacted] but he suspected it. The CIA statement concluded as follows: “[redacted] expressed his opinion that DoS (Department of State) was not very careful [redacted].”

The CIA used the B(1) FOIA redaction 20 times. According to Freedom of Information Act exemptions, these redactions can include information about national defense, foreign policy, U.S. national security, transnational terrorism and sources or methods, or cryptology.

“President François Hollande has vowed to meet police union leaders after a fourth night of unprecedented protests in Paris and across the country.

Hundreds of police took to the streets of Paris for a fourth night of demonstrations calling for reinforcements and stiffer penalties following a string of attacks on officers.

Protests also took place in other French cities on Thursday night despite the government’s efforts to contain growing anger among police as the issue of safety of law enforcement officers enters the presidential race.

Around 500 officers, most dressed in civilian clothes and some with their faces partly covered, protested near the Eiffel Tower.

“Police officers need recognition,” Prime Minister Manuel Valls said earlier Thursday.

“They are loved by the French people, and not only since Charlie,” he added, referring to an outpouring of sympathy for police following the attack last year on the Charlie Hebdo magazine.

The execution-style killing of a police officer during the assault by two extremists became one of the emblematic images of the tragedy, the first in a string of Islamist-inspired attacks that have shocked France.

“I call for calm and peace and I say to the police officers of France that they can count on my support, my solidarity, my understanding and my commitment,” Valls said.

With security at its highest possible level, officers have been up in arms over attacks on police during patrols in tough suburbs and during street demonstrations.

On October 8, a 28-year-old officer suffered serious burns when he was attacked with a petrol bomb on the outskirts of the capital. He remains in a coma.

Police unions, which have already met with Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, are demanding a meeting with President Francois Hollande and calling for fixed minimum sentences for attacks on the police.

Hollande said early Friday that he planned to meet with police union leaders at the start of next week.

Under French law, police may protest only when off duty, out of uniform and provided they leave their service weapons and vehicles behind.

The Socialist government has accused former president Nicolas Sarkozy of cutting 10,00 police jobs during his 2007-2012 presidency.

Sarkozy, who is bidding to clinch the right-wing nomination as he attempts to regain the presidency, described the accusations on Thursday as “lies”.”
