“They informed 120 employees from World Vision in Gaza they were officially canceling their contracts and stopping all their projects in the enclave,” a World Vision staffer, who declined to be identified, told AFP.
A document viewed by AFP said World Vision “is facing a major crisis that has affected the international NGO, including the source of its funding, and due to this crisis all our activities have been suspended in Gaza.”
Senior employees would be kept on partial salaries, the World Vision source said.
The head of World Vision in Gaza, Mohammad el-Halabi, was arrested by Israel and charged with diverting millions of dollars in both materials and cash to Hamas, including the so-called “military wing” of the terrorist organization, according to a report by Arutz Sheva in Israel.

A Swedish appeals court announced on Monday that it would rule at the end of the week whether to rescind the detention order against the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange.
Later in the day the prosecutor’s office in Ecuador said Assange would be questioned next month at Ecuador’s London embassy, where Assange remains after seeking shelter four years ago.
Assange is wanted by Swedish prosecutors in a rape investigation that stems from his visit to the country in 2010. He denies the allegations and has asked Swedish courts to repeal the detention order with which prosecutors sought his extradition from Britain.

Pakistan and Russia are to conduct their first-ever joint military drill later this year in a sign of improving military ties between the once Cold War enemies.
A senior Pakistani official told The Express Tribune that around 200 military personnel from both sides will take part in the exercise. Islamabad is also looking to buy advanced warplanes from Russia.
The drill is called “Friendship-2016”, Qazi Khalilullah, Pakistan’s ambassador to Moscow, told the Pakistan-based newspaper.

Notre Dame plot: Three more women under investigation
French prosecutors have placed three young women under formal investigation over a foiled attack near Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Ines Madani, 19, Sara Hervouet, 23, and Amel Sakaou, 39, were brought before anti-terrorism judges on Monday.
The women are suspected of plotting to blow up a car packed with gas canisters last week, and of having ties to so-called Islamic State (IS).
Another woman, Ornella G, 29, is already being investigated in the case.

Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg’s foreign affairs minister, said Hungary should be kicked out of the EU over its stance on the refugee crisis, Die Welt reported.
“We cannot accept the founding principles of the EU being violated,” Asselborn told the newspaper in an interview published Tuesday, just days before the informal EU summit in Bratislava on September 16.
“[Those] who build fences against refugees like Hungary does, or who violate press freedom and judicial independence, should be excluded temporarily or forever from the EU,” Asselborn said, adding that was “the only way to preserve the cohesion and values of the EU.”

Iran launches new navy ship as tensions rise with U.S. in Gulf

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched a new 55-metre-long naval ship on Tuesday that is capable of transporting a helicopter and up to 100 men, according to the website of state TV.
The ship’s launch in the port city of Bushehr, comes at a time of high tension between Iran and the United States over Gulf waters. U.S. officials says there have been more than 30 close encounters between U.S. and Iranian vessels in the Gulf so far this year, over twice as many as in the same period of 2015.
On Sept. 4, a U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship changed course after an Iranian Revolutionary Guard fast-attack craft came within 91 meters of it in the central Gulf, at least the fourth such incident in less than a month.
“This ship increases the deterrent power of Iran and will have an effect on the calculations of the enemy, particularly America,” Revolutionary Guard naval chief Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi said at the launch, according to the state TV site.

Iran threatened to shoot down US Navy spy planes in the Persian Gulf
Iran threatened to shoot down two US Navy surveillance aircraft flying close to Iranian territory in the Persian Gulf over the weekend, the latest in a series of recent provocations between Iran and the US military in the region, three US defense officials with knowledge of the incident told Fox News.
On Sept. 10, a Navy P-8 Poseidon with a crew of nine and an EP-3 Eries with a crew of roughly 24, were flying a reconnaissance mission 13 miles off the coast of Iran, in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, according to officials.
Iran’s territorial waters—like all nations–extend 12 miles into the sea, according to international maritime law.
At some point during the flight, the Iranian military warned the two aircraft to change course or risk getting shot down.
The US military planes ignored the warning and continued flying in international airspace, although close to Iranian territory, the officials told Fox.

The five teenage boys were sitting in a parked car in a gated community in Melbourne, Florida, when a police officer pulled up behind them.
Officer Justin Valutsky closed one of the rear doors, which had been ajar, and told them to stay in the car. Philippines guarantees U.S. deal intact as Duterte’s salvos test ties
MANILA (Reuters) – The Philippines moved to shore up relations with the United States on Tuesday with guarantees that a treaty between them would be honored and security ties were “rock solid”, despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s railings against Washington.
The firebrand leader launched more verbal salvos on Monday about what he called atrocities under American colonial rule, calling for the pullout of U.S. special forces stationed in the restive south that he said were complicating counter-insurgency operations.
Duterte is hugely popular at home for his brash remarks and take-charge style, but his frequent tirades against Washington, including calling both President Barack Obama and his ambassador to Manila a “son of a bitch”, have tested a relationship of strategic importance to both sides.
Foreign Minister Perfecto Yasay said Duterte’s remarks, including that the southern Philippines “would never have peace” while allied with Washington, were not a signal that a pact between them would be abrogated.
“The president has said … that we will respect and continue to honor our treaty obligations and commitments,” Yasay said in a radio interview.

Israeli aircraft attack Syrian army position, Israel denies any shot down
BEIRUT/JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel said its aircraft attacked a Syrian army position on Tuesday after a stray mortar bomb struck the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, and it denied a Syrian statement that a warplane and drone were shot down.
The air strike was a now-routine Israeli response to the occasional spillover from fighting in a five-year-old civil war, and across Syria a ceasefire was holding at the start of its second day.
Syria’s army command said in a statement that Israeli warplanes had attacked an army position at 1 a.m. on Tuesday (2200 GMT, Monday) in the countryside of Quneitra province.
The Israeli military said its aircraft attacked targets in Syria hours after the mortar bomb from fighting among factions in Syria struck the Golan Heights. Israel captured the plateau from Syria in a 1967 war.
The Syrian army said it had shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone after the Israeli attack.

Arrest Governor Terry McAuliffe NOW
Come hell or high water Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe is going to deliver his state’s electoral votes to his close friend of more than twenty years, Hillary Clinton. McAuliffe has spent the entire summer attempting to restore voting rights to 206,000 convicted felons, most of whom will probably vote in future elections for him, his party, and his friends.
According to Article II Section 1 of the Constitution of Virginia, a convicted felon loses his right to vote “unless his civil rights have been restored by the Governor or other appropriate authority.” From the time the current state constitution was written in 1902 until just this year that clause was understood to mean that the governor has the authority to restore voting rights under extraordinary circumstances and on a case-by-case basis. But that’s not how McAuliffe understands it. Under his interpretation, the state constitution empowers the governor to enfranchise all felonious Virginians en masse. In April of this year, he signed an executive order doing exactly that.
In order to justify his action, Governor McAuliffe has resorted to the last refuge of scoundrels — accusations of racism. Suspending felons’ voting rights affects blacks disproportionately, you see, which McAuliffe implies can be the only reason anyone would oppose him.
That fact alone doesn’t make “blacks” and “felons” interchangeable terms by any stretch of the imagination. Most felons are not black and most blacks are not felons. Even so, the fact that felon disenfranchisement affects blacks disproportionately is a direct result of blacks violating the law disproportionately. Felons are a self-selecting group of people who choose to rape, murder, and rob, among other crimes. The day blacks decide to get their act together and stop joining this ignoble group will be the day they stop being disproportionately affected by laws like these. It’s not the law’s fault that black people break it in proportions far beyond their numbers.

I understand how you are thinking, I don’t know what Dyer is thinking but my feeling is that after the civil war that is almost a certainty the bureaucracy will end up being smaller and we will return to limited government at all levels. Clinton IT aide pleads Fifth, skips hearing
The former State Department employee who set up Hillary Clinton’s private email server did not appear before the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday morning despite a subpoena to testify on the deletion of some of Clinton’s emails.
Bryan Pagliano exercised his Fifth Amendment right not to testify against himself before the House Select Committee on Benghazi in 2015. He was also reportedly awarded an immunity deal during the FBI’s now-closed investigation into Clinton’s use of the server while secretary of State.
“It’s a serious matter. Mr. Pagliano has chosen to evade a subpoena duly issued by the committee. I will consult with counsel and my colleagues to consider a full range of options available to address Mr. Pagliano’s failure to appear,” Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said.

TORONTO – September 13 2016 – Man arrested in fatal stabbing after argument over ‘religious views’ near York University</strong
Toronto police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of another man in his 20s outside a home near York University in Toronto early Tuesday morning.
Police responded to the scene at The Village at York University near Assiniboine Road and Boake Street around 1 a.m. and located a male with stab wounds.
The man was rushed to hospital without vital signs and was later pronounced dead.
Police say both men knew each other and the investigation is ongoing. The identities of the victim and the suspects have not been released.
An area resident told Global News the stabbing took place at a rooming house after an argument broke out.
“It’s been going on for a couple of nights. Tonight for some reason they got into a physical fight and after a while I heard someone do something and then it went really quiet,” Fateh Sandhu said.
A neighbour across the street said one of the occupants of the home told him the argument was over religious views.
“I guess one might not have liked the others opinion or maybe didn’t want to be convinced of something,” Tevin Bramble said.
“And then it got to a point where one person left, went to a house, came back and after that moment he said it got quiet, like everybody was chilling. Everything calmed down and then that’s when the guy ended up swinging and stabbing the other man.”
Another area resident said she too overheard a heated discussion outdoors.
“I heard one guy say, ‘Oh no. It’s because you’re Arabic,’ and the other guy was like, ‘No. It’s not. It’s your people,’” Megan Griffith said. “It’s started out as a normal conversation and then it got really heated about religion. But I can’t tell you exactly what they were saying.”

Police say victim in his 20s stabbed multiple times and was without vital signs at scene
Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with a fatal stabbing at a home near York University overnight.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. on Boake Street near Assiniboine Road in the York University Heights neighbourhood.
Police received a call for an argument between two men, and arrived on scene to find one man suffering from multiple stab wounds. The man was without vital signs at the scene.
Paramedics rushed the man, who was in his 20s, to the closest hospital, but police confirm that he succumbed to his injuries.
Despite the initial report, police said a number of men were involved in the altercation.
Late Tuesday morning, police announced that a 31-year-old man has been arrested. Both the suspect and the victim knew each other, Toronto police Const. Victor Kwong tweeted, adding that their identities would be released “later.”
The homicide unit has taken over the investigation.

TORONTO – A deadly mix of religion, politics and alcohol may have cost a man his life in North York early Tuesday.
Residents of the Village at York University — near Keele St. and Finch Ave. W. — say as many as five men have been known to booze it up at a house on Boake St., often ending up in heated arguments over their differing political and religious views.
But neighbours never imagined the drunken debates would one day end in murder.
“Usually when they start drinking it starts to get bad,” Fateh Sandhu, 24, said Tuesday. “Last night for some reason it suddenly went from the normal arguing to a stabbing.”
The third-year Seneca College student only moved into a house across the street a few weeks ago but he had already heard his neighbours’ lively political and religious discussions numerous times.
Sandhu believes at least two of the men reside in the roominghouse across the street and several of their friends often stopped by for drinks.
He heard a ruckus shortly after midnight and looked out from his upstairs bedroom to see some of the men pushing and shoving each other.
Sandhu was trying to go back to sleep when it suddenly became quiet. He went outside to investigate and saw the neighbours’ front yard littered with beer cans.
Then he heard someone inside the neighbouring house frantically yelling, “He’s not breathing.”
Emergency crews responded soon after, carried the victim out of the house on a bloody bedsheet, and performed CPR.
“The man wasn’t conscious,” Sandhu said. “It looked like he was stabbed multiple times.”
Toronto Police have identified him as Alp Efe, 28.
One resident of the home where the stabbing unfolded, who asked not to be identified, said three men living in the house are friends and regularly have drinks together out front or at back.
None of the three are students and they each come from different cultural and religious backgrounds.
“They often argue about politics,” the York University student said. “But I’m shocked that it escalated to murder.”
Toronto Police say Alijan Khan, 31, who was known to the victim, was arrested following the killing. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

According to the Clinton campaign, Hillary is currently ill with pneumonia. That much we finally learned on Sunday, hours after she suddenly left the 9/11 memorial ceremony she was attending at Ground Zero. She had to be escorted away to her daughter Chelsea’s Manhattan apartment to recover from what her campaign spokesperson first described as an “overheated” condition. At the time of the incident, the temperature outside was approximately 80 degrees, with relatively low humidity.
The press traveling with Hillary was first kept in the dark. Had not a video captured her nearly stumbling and being held up to prevent her from falling as she was helped into a van, Hillary’s campaign might not have admitted that anything was wrong at all. Only towards the end of the day did her doctor disclose that she had been diagnosed with pneumonia last Friday.
Health is normally a private matter. If Bill or Chelsea Clinton had taken ill, for example, it would be none of our business what was wrong. But Hillary Clinton is running to become the next president and commander-in-chief of the United States. Physical and mental fitness for performance of the duties of the highest and most demanding job in the land is a legitimate public concern. When one runs for the presidency of the United States, the public has a right to know, before they vote, whether the candidates asking for their votes are likely to be capable of performing under intense stress for at least the next four years.

What do Global Warming, Israel and charter schools have to do with BLM’s supposed mission of denouncing police brutality? And what does Black Lives Matter’s obsession with gay rights have to do with police shootings.
Nothing. And that’s the point.
Black Lives Matter was always a scam. The protests made it a valuable property. And the payday came in. Bill Maher Jokes About Donald Trump Assassination
The presidential race is getting so tight that someone is going to have to “go out there” and assassinate Donald Trump, liberal comedian and talk show host Bill Maher joked on Saturday.
During a stand-up performance at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., the host of HBO’s Real Time referred to the release of John Hinckley — the man who attempted to kill President Ronald Reagan in 1981 — from a psychiatric hospital on Saturday.
“I’m nervous with this election,” Maher told the audience, according to theWrap. “I saw the headline today: ‘Race tightening, Trump ahead in Ohio and Florida.’ If this race is even the week before the election, somebody is going to have to go out there… Why do you think they let Hinckley out?”

Guccifer 2.0 Releases More DNC Documents
The hacker known as Guccifer 2.0 on Tuesday released new records taken from the Democratic National Committee.
A representative of the hacker, whose identity is unknown, appeared remotely at The Future of Cyber Security Europe conference, which was held in London.
According to Forbes, the representative provided tech specialists who attended the conference with 500 megabytes worth of documents taken from the DNC. The documents, which Forbes also obtained, expose the DNC’s information technology infrastructure as well as analysis of party donors.
The leak is the second one involving DNC records. In July, WikiLeaks released nearly 20,000 emails that Guccifer 2.0 hacked from the DNC’s computer systems.
The release led to the forced resignation of several DNC officials, including chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Some of the emails showed the officials appeared to be critical of Hillary Clinton’s primary challenger, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Federal investigators are looking into the DNC hack and others that hit Democratic groups, such as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Some government officials have said they believe Guccifer 2.0 is working with Russian intelligence agencies.
Guccifer 2.0 has historically released hacked documents on their WordPress website. The last document dump occurred on Aug. 31 with the publication of documents obtained from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s personal computer.
The hacker has released other documents obtained from the DCCC, including research reports of candidates in various House races.
One recipient of the documents posted a link to a website where they can be downloaded.
A Daily Caller review of the documents shows that many are from 2009 and 2010. The release does not appear to be as fruitful as others provided by Guccifer 2.0. One folder entitled “Reports for Kaine” includes documents compiled in 2009 for current vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine when he served as both governor of Virginia and chairman of the DNC.

DNC Torches Trump, Russia Over Newly Leaked Documents
The Democratic National Committee released a statement Tuesday condemning a new leak of its hacked documents and tying that hack to both Russia and Donald Trump.
Interim DNC Chair Donna Brazile charged in the statement that the only person to gain anything from these hacks would be Trump and his campaign. She also blasted his statements about cybercrime as “dangerous.”
“The DNC is the victim of a crime—an illegal cyberattack by Russian state-sponsored agents who seek to harm the Democratic Party and progressive groups in an effort to influence the presidential election,” the statement reads. “There’s one person who stands to benefit from these criminal acts, and that’s Donald Trump. Not only has Trump embraced Putin, he publicly encouraged further Russian espionage to help his campaign. Like so many of the words Trump has uttered this election season, his statements encouraging cybercrime are dangerous, divisive, and unprecedented.”
Hours before the DNC released the statement, Politico reported that someone speaking on behalf of the hacker Guccifer 2.0 at a hacker conference in London announced the release of internal documents about the DNC’s tech initiatives during vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine’s tenure as governor of Virginia, as well as spreadsheets that appear to contain donor information.
U.S. intelligence officials have said that Russian hackers are believed to be behind the hack of the DNC, as well as a cyberattack on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

“France’s first centre aimed at de-radicalising would-be jihadists was unveiled in front of officials and journalists on Tuesday, part of government measures ordered in response to a wave of terrorist attacks on French soil.
The Centre for Prevention, Integration and Citizenship is housed in an isolated 18th-century manor known as the Château de Pontourny in central France. It is designed to host a maximum of 25 people aged between 18 and 30, the first of whom will arrive next month.
The €40 million government programme will see similar centres open in each of France’s 12 regions. They will take in people referred by the justice system to try to stop them from being lured into jihadist networks that might brainwash them into performing terrorist acts.

But the decision to locate the centre in the Indre et Loire region of central France has prompted fury among locals, who protested outside the manor on Tuesday and complained of a lack of security guarantees.
Critics have also warned that the centres may ultimately backfire by fostering radicalisation rather than discouraging it, much the way the struggling French prison system does.
Prime Minister Manuel Valls has stated that the fight against homegrown jihadism is France’s “biggest challenge since World War II”.
The government believes that nearly 9,300 people in France have been radicalised, with the new plan aiming to have 3,600 participants within two years.

“A Turkish hacker group has allegedly tried hacking into the National Bank of Austria after reportedly being behind an attempted cyber attack at Vienna airport two weeks ago.
The hackers’ collective, which goes under the name of Aslan Neferler, said the cyber attacks on Austrian institutions are revenge for Austria’s “anti-Turkish political stance”.
They claimed responsibility for two DoS-attacks on Friday night, when most of the bank’s IT-technicians were not working. By sending five million emails per minute the attackers tried to clog the bank’s server.
Christian Gutlederer, the spokesman for Austria’s National Bank, said: “Our website was temporarily unavailable. The hackers did not have any access to any of our sensitive data.”
The Turkish nationalists announced their “success” on various social networks, writing that they had “blocked access to the Austrian National Bank for a while”. They promised that the attacks would continue.
The hacking attempts come after diplomatic relations between Austria and Turkey sharply deteriorated. After the failed coup attempt in Turkey, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz warned he will stop any move that brings Turkey closer to joining the European Union.
Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Austria and accused the country of being supportive of terrorism and a centre of Islamophobia.”

“A Catholic cardinal tipped to be the next Pope has warned that Muslims want to eradicate Christianity and to conquer Europe.
Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn made the warning on Sunday during the church festival “Holy Name of Mary”, which was first introduced 333 years ago in gratitude for the victory over the Ottomans in the Battle of Vienna.
According to the Archdiocese of Vienna, the cardinal said: “Will there be an Islamic conquest of Europe? Many Muslims want that and say: Europe is at the end.”
He asked God to have mercy on Europe and to show mercy to its people, which he said “are in danger of forfeiting our Christian heritage”.
Schönborn explained that people could already feel this loss, “not only economically, but above all, in human and religious matters”.
The cardinal’s statement came as many places across Austria commemorated the 333rd anniversary of the Battle of Vienna. During the battle on 11-12th September 1683, combined Christian forces defeated over 100,000 soldiers from the Ottoman Empire.
The battle was fought by the Habsburg Monarchy, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire against the invading Muslim Ottoman Empire. Polish King John III Sobieski famously commanded the Christian army toward its victory.
The Ottoman soldiers had already started to take the Austrian capital Vienna which was defended by only 10,000 Habsburg soldiers when Polish horsemen attacked them from the rear and devastated the Turkish army – which was forced to retreat.
The battle is often seen as a turning point in history, which slowly led to the decline of the Ottoman Empire.
The Catholic Church in Austria was not the only one to commemorate the event. The far-right Austrian Freedom Party held a controversial event, stressing the need to defend the “Western World” from invaders.
The event was held at Vienna’s Palais Ferstl, and included an opening speech by Vienna’s Vice-Mayor Johann Gudenus and speeches by Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache, as well as historian and university professor Dr Lothar Hobelt.
The commemorations come at a time of heightened tensions between Austria and Turkey, the modern Republic which succeeded the Ottoman Empire after its final collapse.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern even went so far as to say: “The membership negotiations are currently no more than fiction.”

“It was a simple ad for a college football team that would show the ugly underbelly of American hatred for anything Islamic.
A Stanford University photographer snapped a photo a group of girls cheering for their college team. It was a great ad photo. Several college co-eds cheering for their team. It caught the team spirit. It also caught a ton of nasty comments.
In the middle of the ad is a young black student wearing a hijab.
“What a ridiculous advertisement. You had to throw a Muslim in there, didn’t you,” another commented, adding, “Disgusting. Not one white person in that ad. Screw Stanford.”
“That Hijab Or whatever is being shoved right done [sic] my throat!” one user wrote on Facebook.
And those were some of the less vicious comments.
The Muslim student, Tesay Yusuf, didn’t know she was featured in the ad until it was shared on Facebook.
“We all thought it was pretty cool that they had used the picture of us for the ad and didn’t make much of it otherwise,” she wrote in an email to The Washington Post.
Then she saw the racist and hateful messages about her wearing a hijab.
Instead of sitting back and complaining or hiding, Tesay fought fire with fire.
She posted the following on Twitter:

“The Turkish Justice Ministry demanded Washington on Sept. 13 arrest U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen over the July 15 failed coup attempt, sending the first temporary arrest request to the country, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.
Ankara accuses Gülen of giving the order for the failed coup attempt and commanding it, a charge he denies.
“This person is being sought on an arrest demand as the person who gave the order for the bloody coup attempt on July 15, 2016, in addition to many crimes committed in our country,” read the script sent to the U.S. Department of Justice.
It stated soldiers belonging to the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ) within the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) attempted an armed military coup under the order and command of Gülen.
The arrest warrant issued by the Ankara 2nd Criminal Court of Peace as a part of the ongoing probe into the coup attempt was also attached to the script.
It also reminded that Gülen had faced up to 15 years in jail on charges of founding and managing an armed terror organization as well as a life sentence for other charges.
The script noted the arrest demand was within the scope of Article 10 of the treaty on extradition and mutual assistance in criminal matters signed between Turkey and the U.S. in 1979.
The ministry had previously sent four separate dossiers to the U.S. Department of Justice, which it said contained evidence of Gülen’s involvement in the coup attempt.
Ankara has repeatedly demanded Gülen’s extradition since the attempted takeover, with U.S. officials insisting that they can only extradite him if Turkey presents proof regarding his direct involvement in the coup attempt.
Last month, a delegation from the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. State Department arrived in Ankara to work on the extradition case. Early in September, a delegation from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) also headed for Washington to discuss the extradition.
On Sept. 9, Justice Minister Bekir Bozda? and U.S. Ambassador to Turkey John Bass discussed the extradition of Gülen in a meeting requested by the latter.
In talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an on the sidelines of the recent G-20 Summit in China, U.S. President Barack Obama reportedly vowed that Washington would ensure that anyone in the U.S. proven to be involved in the coup attempt would be brought to justice.”

Washington (AFP) – Facebook, Twitter and news organizations including Agence France-Presse have joined a coalition of media and technology groups seeking to filter out online misinformation and improve news quality on social networks.
First Draft News, which is backed by Google, announced Tuesday that some 20 news organizations will be part of its partner network to share information on best practices for journalism in the online age.
Jenni Sargent, managing director of First Draft, said the partner network will help advance the organization’s goal of improving news online and on social networks.
“Filtering out false information can be hard. Even if news organizations only share fact-checked and verified stories, everyone is a publisher and a potential source,” she said in a blog post.
“We are not going to solve these problems overnight, but we’re certainly not going to solve them as individual organizations.”
Sargent said the coalition will develop training programs and “a collaborative verification platform,” as well as a voluntary code of practice for online news.
“We live in a time when trust and truth are issues that all newsrooms, and increasingly the social platforms themselves, are facing,” she said.
“Each partner is committed to sharing knowledge, developing policies and devising training in how journalists use the social web to find and report news.”
The announcement comes amid concerns over the growing role of social networks, especially Facebook, in delivering and filtering news, and sometimes allowing hoaxes and misinformation to proliferate.
The partner network includes Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, The New York Times, Washington Post, BuzzFeed News, CNN, ABC News of Australia, ProPublica, AFP, The Telegraph, France Info, Breaking News, Le Monde’s Les Decodeurs, International Business Times UK, Eurovision News Exchange and Al Jazeera Media Network.
Other organizations in the network include Amnesty International, European Journalism Centre, American Press Institute, International Fact Checking Network and Duke Reporters’ Lab.”
First Draft was formed last year with support from Google News Lab and has worked with YouTube on verifying user-generated videos, among other projects.

“New York City investigators on Tuesday searched for a man suspected of setting fire to a traditionally dressed Muslim woman in a Midtown shopping area, police said.
Police said they were investigating the incident, which occurred the day before the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, as a hate crime.
The 35-year-old woman was standing outside a luxury clothing boutique on Park Avenue on Saturday evening when she felt her left arm suddenly heat up and noticed her blouse was on fire, city police said in a statement.
“She patted out the fire and observed a male standing next to her with a lighter in his hand,” police said.
The victim, who local media reported was a tourist from Scotland, was not injured and declined medical attention, police said. Authorities did not name her.
