Muslim Aaqil Ahmed described it is an “uncomfortable” truth that the bloodthirsty terrorist cult is being driven by “Islamic doctrine”.
He said: “I hear so many people say ISIS has nothing to do with Islam — of course it has. They are not preaching Judaism.
“It might be wrong, but what they are saying is an ideology based on some form of Islamic doctrine. They are Muslims. That is a fact and we have to get our head around some very uncomfortable things.
“That is where the difficulty comes in for many journalists, because the vast majority of Muslims won’t agree with ISIS.”

The religion and ethics chief was speaking at Huddersfield University where he was asked why the BBC refers to ISIS as the “so-called” Islamic State.
The corporation came under fire for the way in which it refers to Daesh and was blasted by David Cameron for using the term “Islamic State”.
The Prime Minister said in January: “I think Muslim families around the country would have held their heads in despair this morning when once again you just called it ‘Islamic State’. You didn’t even say ‘so-called Islamic State’. It’s so important.”
Mr Ahmed sparked fury last August when he compared migrants who sneak illegally into Britain to the “Holy Family” of Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus.
He claimed the Biblical flight from King Herod to Bethlehem was similar to that of refugees amassing at Calais in a bid to get through the Channel Tunnel.
Mr Ahmed, the first Muslim to head religion at the BBC, made the comments in a blog defending the decision to film an episode of BBC’s Songs of Praise from the Calais ‘Jungle’ camp.
He wrote: “For centuries Christians have related to the vivid image of the Holy family becoming refugees themselves when Joseph, Mary and their baby son had to flee persecution from King Herod and escape to Egypt.”
France train chaos as labour unrest spreads
Paris (AFP) – Transport chaos hit France on Wednesday as rail workers downed tools, and a tug of war between government and unions showed no sign of abating ahead of the Euro 2016 football tournament.
The turmoil was set to drag on Thursday with staff at railway operator SNCF vowing to continue their strike and subway workers and employees at nuclear power stations also planning walk outs.
Dozens of trains were cancelled as SNCF workers launched their eighth strike in three months for better pay and working conditions.
“It’s a nightmare today — even more than the other strike days,” said Christine, an SNCF worker surveying the chaos at Ormesson station in the Paris suburbs, where commuters were struggling to squeeze on to one of the few trains that had shown up.
The strike has piled further pressure on the deeply unpopular Socialist government, which has been besieged by months of protests and work stoppages over a controversial labour reform bill.

Venezuela awaits key ruling on Maduro recall vote
Caracas (AFP) – Venezuela’s opposition learns Thursday whether authorities will let them proceed with efforts to call a referendum on removing President Nicolas Maduro, whom they blame for the country’s fall from booming oil giant to basket case.
The National Electoral Board (CNE) must accept or reject an initial petition with 1.8 million signatures endorsing a recall vote against Maduro, whom the opposition accuses of driving Venezuela into economic and political chaos.
Maduro’s opponents warn the country faces an explosion of unrest if authorities do not allow a recall referendum this year.
Enrique Marquez, the deputy speaker of the opposition-controlled legislature, said Wednesday the referendum was the only “escape valve” for a country racked by economic collapse, hyperinflation, shortages of food and medicine, daily power outages and violent crime.
He urged the CNE to “get in step with history, with the suffering of the Venezuelan people, and remove the barriers blocking the referendum from being held this year.”
The opposition accuses the CNE of dragging its feet to protect Maduro, the political heir to late leftist firebrand Hugo Chavez.
Maduro’s camp for its part accuses the opposition of massive fraud in its petition drive.
But even if the CNE accepts the petition submitted on May 2, Maduro’s opponents face a long and winding road to call a referendum.

Egypt receives first of two French Mistral warships
CAIRO (Reuters) – Egypt on Thursday received the first of two French Mistral helicopter carriers and said the second would arrive in September as part a deal signed last year.
France agreed last year to sell two Mistral helicopter carriers to Egypt for 950 million euros (656 million pounds) after their sale to Russia was canceled last August.
“We now have advanced capabilities in confronting terrorism within our borders and on our shores,” Minister of Defence Sedky Sobhi said during a handover ceremony in Toulouse.
“It increases our combat capabilities and our ability to carry out long-term missions at sea…and we are awaiting on the arrival of the second in September,” he said.
Cairo has sought to boost its military power in the face of a two-year insurgency in northern Sinai and fears that the conflict in neighboring Libya could spill over.
The Mistral is known as the “Swiss army knife” of the French navy for its versatility. Equipped with missile defense and radar navigation systems, it can store up to 16 helicopters and has enough landing pads for six helicopters, according to Egyptian state television.
The warship, named Gamal Abdel Nasser after the second president of Egypt, is headed toward Alexandria where it is expected to arrive within weeks, state television said.
In April France signed separate deals worth about 2 billion euros ($2.26 billion) with Egypt during a visit by French President Francois Hollande to Cairo.
The deals included a contract for a military telecommunications satellite expected to be built by France’s Airbus Space Systems et Thales Alenia Space.

Today a man from Trump’s rally last week in Fountain Hills, Arizona has come forward to say that he was paid to protest the event. “I was given $3,500 to protest Donald Trump’s rally in Fountain Hills,” said 37-year-old Paul Horner. “I answered a Craigslist ad a little over a week ago about a group needing actors for a political event. I interviewed with them and got the part.”
Trump supporters have been claiming for weeks that the protesters are being paid for by Bernie Sanders ’ campaign, but Horner disagrees.
“As for who these people were affiliated with that interviewed me, my guess would be Hillary Clinton’s campaign,” Horner said. “The actual check I received after I was done with the job was from a group called ‘Women Are The Future’. After I was hired, they told me if anyone asked any questions about who I was with or communicated with me in any way, I should start talking about how great Bernie Sanders is.”

Terror Cells Stockpiling Explosives Says Europol Chief
The head of the European Police force’s counter-terrorism department warned members of the European Parliament of the suspected build up.
Terror cells across Europe are stockpiling explosives to carry out attacks, according to Europol as reported by iHLS.
Terrorists are collecting “large clandestine stockpiles of explosives,” Manuel Navarrete Paniagua, Head of the European Counter Terrorism Center at Europol warned members of the European Parliament.
“We have some information reported by the member states that terrorists groups are trying to establish large clandestine stockpiles of explosives in the European Union to be used eventually in large scale home attacks.”
Panigua also addressed fears that jihadists were using the huge influx of migrants in order to sneak fighters into Europe.
“We found no evidence of the systematic use of this flow to infiltrate terrorists into the European Union” he said. “But they do, they use it, we have some cases, some of the people that perpetrated the Paris attacks were eventually disguised in this immigration flow.”

Europe Braces for More Jihadist Attacks
“Another attempted attack is almost certain.”
European security officials are bracing for potential jihadist attacks at public venues across Europe this summer.
In France, officials are preparing for possible attacks against the European Football Championships. The games, which start on June 10, comprise 51 matches involving 24 teams playing in 10 host cities across the country.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that more than 90,000 security personnel will be on hand to protect the 2.5 million spectators expected to attend the games, as well as the hundreds of thousands more who will watch the matches on big screens in so-called “fan zones” in major cities.
Patrick Calvar, the head of the France’s domestic intelligence agency (Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure, DGSI), warned: “We know that the Islamic State is planning new attacks in France.” He added:
“We risk being confronted with a new form of attack: a terrorist campaign characterized by placing explosive devices in places where large crowds are gathered, and repeating this type of action to create a climate of panic.”
According to Calvar, at least 645 French nationals or residents, including 245 women, are currently with the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria and Iraq. Another 200 individuals are “in transit,” either on their way to the Middle East or returning to France. Around 244 jihadists have already returned to France, and another 818 people have “demonstrated their intention to go to Syria.”

“A top Belgian official told NBC News Thursday that as many as 100 ISIS fighters who have returned to Belgium from the battlefield in Syria may be planning terror attacks.
Deputy Prime Minister Jan Jambon also said, however, that he was not aware of any imminent plot like the twin bombings that killed 32 people in Brussels in March. “We don’t have precise information about a current attack,” Jambon said during a joint press conference with NYPD counterterrorism officials in New York.
Jambon, who is also the nation’s interior minister, said that 300 fighters from Belgium have gone to the Islamic Caliphate in Syria, and 200 have returned. He said that half of the 200 returnees could be “used” to counter the jihadi narrative among other potential Belgian recruits and counsel them against joining the terror group because many have soured on ISIS after witnessing atrocities.
But he also said that he is concerned that the other 100 could be returning with specific terror missions directed by ISIS, and that authorities throughout Europe are on the highest level of alert for these individuals and any plots.
Jambon also drew a comparison between 9/11 and the Brussels attacks. “In difficult times, one knows their friends.”…”
Britain’s National Students Union in Crisis
The United Kingdom’s National Union of Students (NUS) is in crisis. Three major university student associations — Newcastle, Lincoln and Hull — have disaffiliated themselves from the organization, and more are set to follow. NUS is struggling even to retain its previous strongholds, such as Exeter’s Student Association.
The Exeter University campaign to leave the NUS managed to increase the number of votes to defect from roughly 200 to 2546. This stampede occurred despite the massive protests by the “stay” campaign, including text messages to thousands of students and visits to the school by more than 10 senior NUS officials, including two Vice Presidents-elect and the President-elect.
Why are students from so many British universities fighting to leave the NUS? Well, take for example statements by its new president-elect, Malia Bouattia.
Bouattia actively promotes violence against Israel. She has argued that,
“To consider that Palestine will be free only by means of fundraising, non-violent protest and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is problematic… Boycott can be misunderstood as the alternative to resistance by the Palestinian people.”
Presumably, then, Bouattia means that violent “resistance” against Israel is something she supports — such as the theocratic group, Hamas, whose policies include preaching genocide against the Jews, or ISIS, who crucify children and also believe in murdering Jews.

It goes without saying, that we accept all criticism – including unobjective, polemic and aggressively stated criticisms. But, clearly, on the other hand, threats which goal is to prevent free formation of opinion in the German Bundestag are unacceptable.”

GREECE – Migrants hurt, tents torched on Greek isle of Lesbos
Mytilene (Greece) (AFP) – Over a dozen migrants were hurt Thursday in a brawl in the main detention camp on the Greek island of Lesbos that also saw nearly 30 tents torched, an AFP correspondent said.
Hundreds of people — mainly families with children — were evacuated from the camp during the night as rival groups of Afghans and Pakistanis went at each other with clubs and stones, the journalist said.
Three of the injured — two Pakistanis and an Afghan — were hospitalised, two of them with head injuries.
“There was a clash between migrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan late Wednesday in which three people were seriously hurt and were taken to hospital by ambulance,” a local police source told AFP.
Government officials could not be reached for comment.
There were nearly 3,000 people in the Moria camp ahead of the clash, most of them asylum applicants trying to avoid deportation to Turkey under an EU deal that went into effect in March.
Nearly a thousand of them have now left, seeking refuge in the surrounding fields and in another migrant camp, the AFP correspondent said.
The spokesman of the UN refugee agency’s mission to the island, Boris Cheshirkov, confirmed the incident but said the situation was “back to normal” on Thursday.
Lesbos Mayor Spyros Galinos said anxiety has increased among migrants detained for months and facing deportation to their home countries, which they have spent a small fortune to escape.
“These conditions are psychologically and physically exhausting… and breed exasperation,” he told AFP.
There are an estimated 8,500 refugees and migrants held in special-purpose facilities on Greek islands, where they landed earlier this year after crossing the Aegean from Turkey.
They are detained for a maximum of 25 days. After that point they are allowed to leave the camps but are required to stay on the islands until their asylum applications are processed.
No migrants have been able to leave Greece after Balkan states began shutting their borders in February to stem an exodus of thousands to northern Europe.
As a result, over 50,000 people have become trapped in Greece, most of them in overcrowded camps where poor living conditions have frequently been criticised by rights groups.

Iraqi social media users are raging against regional media outlets, especially Al Jazeera and the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya, accusing them of coverage sympathetic to ISIS in the current battles between the terror group and the local Iraqi forces over the city of Fallujah.
The campaign’s main hashtag, , has been tweeted more than 139,000 times in recent days. Users are protesting against media coverage they allege has been supportive of ISIS during the battle. They cite examples of Al Jazeera relying on reports from ISIS’ own Amaq News Agency, or using the official ISIS terminology (calling ISIS “The Islamic State” while calling anti-ISIS Shiite forces “militias”), and directly blaming Al Arabiya for “promoting ISIS interests.”

Both have faced criticism for being heavily influenced by their owners in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, allegedly losing credibility and popularity according to some. Somali security forces have brought to an end a bomb and gun attack by militants on a central Mogadishu hotel that killed at least 16 people and wounded 55, authorities said on Thursday.
Islamist militant group al Shabaab, affiliated with al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Hotel Ambassador. Two lawmakers were among the dead in the attack which ended with police shooting the assailants.

“Rabat – Bern, Switzerland became the site of a new development in Islam, as a woman led Friday’s “Jumma” prayer on the May 27.
Not only did she defy the gender-norm of male-led prayers, she also chose not to wear a hijab, exposing her hair. The group which facilitated this prayer, the Inclusive Mosque Initiative (IMI), is very much aware of the boundaries which it seeks to cross. Among its goals is to “create an inclusive sacred space that welcomes all people,” as stated on its website’s Vision (Inclusive Mosque Initiative).
IMI launched in 2015 in the United Kingdom as an effort to bring Muslims of all backgrounds, including women and LGBTQ community members, together for egalitarian prayer. Their intent is to avoid judgement based on identity, and allow all Muslims to pray without discrimination.
Tamsila Tauqir, the United Kingdom coordinator for IMI, was quoted by the BBC as saying: “We want to offer Muslims an alternative space in which they can pray and meet. We will not discriminate against anyone, they can be Sunni or Shia, straight or gay, people with families and people without.”
This inclusive Jumma has mixed responses to its efforts to include all Muslims regardless of gender or lifestyle, including criticisms that certain IMI efforts run contrary to Islam. All leading sects of Islam currently separate male and female worshippers during prayer, which prompts many Muslims to reject the new efforts by IMI to mix genders. An imam affiliated with London’s The Hittin Institute, an Islamic think tank, voiced concerns with this new Islamic practice.
Imam Adnan Rashid claimed that “The orthodox values of Islam are very clear…the Qur’an is not going to change, the prophetic position is not going to change. Muslim thinking and practices are not going to change. So I don’t know what the point of this initiative is.” Tradition and classical Islamic customs have been established by over 1000 years of practice, and may not be easily changed in such dramatic ways…”

“At least 64 schoolgirls were poisoned in central Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan on Wednesday, the education officials said.
An official in the Ministry of Education Kabir Haqmal said the incident took place in a girls school in Behsud district.
He said the students were immediately taken to hospital for treatment and the health condition of them has been reported satisfactory.
According to Haqmal, similar symptoms were seen as the other girls were poisoned in other provinces which include reduced blood pressure, nausea and headache.
He also added that an investigation is underway regarding the cause of the incident and further information will be released later.
This is not the first time the school girls have been poisoned during the school hours but numerous incidents have taken place in the past, specifically in Northern provinces of the country.

Since the Obama administration inked the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in January, Kerry has been busying himself with ensuring that European banks start doing business with the Iranians. Yes, you read that correctly. Not only has the United States and its European allies agreed to lift sanctions against the Islamic Republic, the administration is now encouraging the private banking sector to do the same. It appears however, that their intense lobbying efforts are being received with a healthy dose of skepticism.
HSBC’s chief legal officer, Stuart Levey confirmed that Kerry had requested that HSBC start opening its banking doors to the Iranians and transact business with them. Levey criticized Kerry’s misguided initiative noting that the U.S. still maintains other non-nuclear related sanctions against the Islamic Republic and that doing business with Iran runs the risk of running afoul of those sanctions. HSBC has had prior negative experience with the U.S. Treasury and Justice departments. In 2012, the bank was forced to fork over $1.9 billion to U.S. authorities to settle allegations involving money laundering for Mexican drug barons.
Levey also noted that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which controls large swaths of the Iranian economy, has been slapped with sanctions by both the U.S. and Europe because of the central role it plays in illicit regional and international activities. Doing business with Iran will almost certainly result in facilitating IRGC operations. Adding to the uncertainty, Iran has over the years developed a penchant for hiding money, engaging in shady deals and money laundering thus making it difficult, if not impossible for banking institutions to engage the Iranians in legitimate business transactions without being complicit in their illegal dealings.

“Police are investigating the alleged assault of an Iraqi asylum seeker who was dragged out of a store and tied to a tree by a local “vigilante” group in Germany.
The incident took place on May 21 near Dresden but the probe comes after a video circulated on social media showing the alleged incident.
Police issued a statement Thursday appealing for information and saying three suspects — aged 29, 49 and 45 — have been identified.
Officers responding to a 911 call on May 21 found the Iraqi zip-tied to a tree in the parking lot of the supermarket, according to the statement.
It said the suspects were initially questioned by police and allowed to leave the scene after telling officers they had “prevented a threat situation” following an altercation inside the supermarket.
The police statement said the video which circulated on social media was shared mainly on “asylum-critical” forums and a female voice off-camera appeared to mention a “vigilante group.”…”

A refugee who was the last person detained on Manus Island in 2004 has told a tribunal a newspaper article quoting MPs talking about Islam could “create a civil war”.
The article, entitled “Islam must change”, was published last November and quoted Coalition MPs Andrew Hastie, Michael Sukkar and Josh Frydenberg questioning the need for reform within modern Islam.
In his application before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, former Palestinian Aladdin Sisalem, 37, alleges the Herald Sun article vilified Islam by claiming it was involved in “serious crimes without any proof and calling for my religion to change”…
This is the third court case he has been involved in since 2004, including an anti-discrimination case against his university, RMIT, where he was studying engineering.
In the other case, he protested against the cancellation of his Disability Support Pension.
The cancellation of his pension was linked to his level of impairment and it was noted in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal decision that he had travelled overseas 16 times in five years and had no difficulty in lifting 13kg of luggage into the overhead compartment on a flight.
Mr Sisalem alleged yesterday that the Herald and Weekly Times Ltd, which publishes the Herald Sun, breached three subsections of the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 by publishing the article…
