  1. Poll claims 25% of Israelis fear a second Holocaust

Almost half the people surveyed (46%) said that they understand that Jews continue to live in European countries despite a rise in anti-Semitic sentiment and attacks for “economic, social and other reasons.” But 39% said the Jews of Europe should move to Israel in the face of rising violence against Jews abroad.

European Jews have endured a series of attacks in recent years, most notably in France, where a Marseille Jewish leader’s suggestion that Jews should not wear a skullcaps in public sparked an outcry and politicians have rushed to decry anti-Semitism.

  2. Syrian rebel splits deepen after failed ‘merger’ with al Qaeda arm

BEIRUT (Reuters) – The leader of al Qaeda’s Syrian wing tried unsuccessfully at a recent meeting to convince rival Islamist factions to merge into one unit, several insurgency sources have told Reuters.

Abu Mohamad al-Golani, head of the Nusra Front, even suggested he was willing to change the name of his group if the others, including the powerful Ahrar al-Sham organization, agreed to the deal, the sources said.

But he made clear that Nusra would not cut its ties with al Qaeda, and its allegiance would remain to Ayman al-Zawahri, who took over as leader after U.S. Navy SEALS killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.

Much was riding on the outcome of the meeting, which the sources said took place about 10 days ago.

  3. Dutch jets to bomb IS targets in Syria

Islamic State’s bombing and shooting attacks on Paris that killed 130 people in November had already led France and Britain to step up their bombing campaigns in Syria and Iraq.

“We have decided to heed the call of our allies for expansion of the operational area of our F-16s to the east of Syria to further weaken ISIS’s supply lines and ability to advance,” Rutte said, using another of Islamic State’s acronyms.

“Only by taking away ISIS’s safe havens in Iraq and Syria can we prevent more attacks.”

The Netherlands is also considering providing more military equipment and training to Iraqi soldiers battling the militants.

  4. Kano: A child suicide bomber blew himself up in a market in northeast Nigeria today, killing at least 10 people, witnesses said, the latest bloodshed to hit the

region, which is plagued by Islamist violence.

They said a huge blast erupted at around midday (1100 GMT) in the crowded market in Gombi in Adamawa state, one of the worst-hit in the seven-year Boko Haram insurgency.

The blast came after three suicide bombers killed at least 14 people in town of Chibok on Wednesday, where Islamist gunmen kidnapped more than 200 girls in April 2014.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari last month declared that the Islamic State group affiliate had been “technically” defeated but there has been no let-up in suicide and bomb attacks.

In the latest attack, trader Mustapha Jalo told AFP: “I heard a huge explosion coming from the grain section, which is at the edge of the market.

“Many of us rushed to the scene and we found carnage.

    People were scattered everywhere.

  5. Thousands in Paris Protest Iranian Rights Abuses as Rouhani Arrives to Sign Business Deals

As Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met with French President Francois Hollande and signed major business deals in Paris, thousands marched in protest of human rights abuses carried out by Tehran, Reuters reported on Thursday. Rouhani’s visit to France was the first by an Iranian president since 1999.

While the countries hailed the commercial agreements “as symbols of thawing relations,” an estimated 3,000 protesters took to the streets to condemn the deteriorating human rights situations in Iran under Rouhani, who was elected in 2013 as a reformer.

An activist from the group FEMEN dangled from a bridge in a mock hanging to draw attention to the soaring execution rate in Iran, which leads the world in per-capita hangings and is one of the only countries to use the death penalty against minors. According to a new report by Amnesty International, at least 73 juveniles were executed by Iran between 2005 to 2015, while 160 remain on death row.

  6. Sharia law may stop MPs drinking: Bars will be banned if politicians move to Department of Health – because of secret deal to finance Islamic bond scheme

MPs could be forced to stop drinking alcohol when they move out of the Palace of Westminster while it undergoes much-needed repairs over the next decade – because of Sharia law.

Earlier this week plans were revealed for MPs to be rehoused in a temporary chamber in a courtyard in the Department of Health, but it has emerged that the building is governed by Islamic law.

The building, located at 79 Whitehall, was quietly transferred to finance an Islamic bond scheme in 2014.

  7. OK – this one has me puzzled.

If I understand it correctly, somebody had kidnapped and killed a boy – but his body was not found until it was so decomposed that the primitive tools available in the area could not be sure it’s the ‘right’ boy….and then the local Imam contacted the grieving family, claiming either that their boy was still alive or that he will deliver them the body for burial (there is a number of stories ‘floating out there’ on this one), for a price.

What seems to be agreed upon in the various sources:

    A boy went missing.

A Local Imam contacted the family claiming they can get their boy/his body back if they pay the Imam a sum of money…

At least, that is my understanding in this confusing story:

  10. http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-france-palestinians-idUKKCN0V727R

Two things to bear in mind, the first one is that France kicked out its dreadful Justice Minister and then went and removed dual nationality requirement from their removal of citizenship revision to the French constitution, the key aspect here is that those that carry out acts in France will lose the benefits of their citizenship.

That is a stick, a warning to their Muslim citizens that their acts will have consequences and fits with the narrative that the European governments do in fact know what coming their way, but they are still hiding it from their population.

When doing that they realised that it could be perceived as anti-Muslim so to balance off against that they did this recognition of Palestine a carrot and a Jew hating one at that, really can Israel reduce controls in the middle of a knife attack frenzy, it does not matter its only Jews, that is so sick its almost a parody.

There you go moral corruption of the first order, trading off their own security against that of Israel.

Or perhaps this was because Iran whose president was visiting France, required some sort of gesture to buy all that stuff from France, so France decided to go broke for attacking that shitty little country as one Gaulist called it a number of years back.

In fact both reasons are highly likely.

France you are disgusting, I can praise you for the effectiveness of your security services that forced the November attacks to be organised from Belgium, but to trade off your own security and wealth against the security of Israel is sick and shows just how degenerate the French government is.

  11. The plight of Syrian refugees is not on a par with Jews fleeing the Nazis

The term Kindertransport has been bandied about in a lazy and dishonest manner by commentators

Such comparisons are odious, not only because they are false, but because they are using genocide to score political points and shut down debate.

  12. Parents sue public high school for ‘religious indoctrination’ after their daughter was ‘forced to convert to Islam in world history class’ (dailymail, Jan 30, 2016)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3423693/Parents-sue-public-high-school-religious-indoctrination-daughter-forced-convert-Islam-world-history-class.html

“The parents of a Maryland teenager have launched a lawsuit against their daughter’s public high school, claiming the district forced the 16-year-old to take classes that promote Islam over Christianity and Judaism.

John Wood, a former Marine, and his wife Melissa Wood, have filed a civil rights complaint against La Plata High School, alleging their daughter – identified only as C.W. – spent one day in a modern history class studying Christianity, followed by two weeks immersed in Islam.

According to court documents obtained by The Daily Mail Online, the 11th grader ‘had to profess the Shahada by claiming ”There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”’

‘Such discriminatory treatment of Christianity is an unconstitutional promotion of one religion over another,’ President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Law Center Richard Thompson said.

Thompson claims that, for non-Muslims, reciting such a statement is the equivalent of converting to Islam.

He also said the school failed to clearly make known to students and their families that a study of Islam was to be part of the world history curriculum.

Students were also required to memorize and recite the Five Pillars of Islam and were subjected to disparaging teachings about Christianity, the Woods claim. ‘The course also taught false statements such as Allah is the same God worshiped by Christians and Islam is a ”’religion of peace”,’ Thompson said in the filings.

‘A school cannot achieve diversity by punishing and alienating students who hold Judeo-Christian beliefs, while bolstering the doctrines and teachings of other religions. ‘Parents must be ever vigilant to the Islamic indoctrination of their children under the guise of teaching history and multiculturalism…”

  13. Now EU leaders say Cologne sex attacks had NOTHING to do with migrant crisis (express, Jan 30, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/639415/Now-EU-leaders-say-Cologne-sex-attacks-nothing-to-do-with-migrant-crisis

“EUROPEAN Union bureaucrats have claimed the wave of migrant sex attacks in Cologne on New Year’s Eve had nothing to do with the refugee crisis.

Startling internal documents reveal that the European Commission (EC) believes the sickening attacks were a “matter of public order”.

They also show the controversial EC hopes to be the “voice of reason” and dispel links between the growing migration crisis and the horrific sex attacks.

They fear the shocking wave of crimes committed by sex attack gangs in Cologne could undermine the “credibility” of the European project.

The sickening list of crimes reported in the German city run to a staggering 821 complaints, and range from sexual assaults to gang rape.

One attacker is alleged to have told police: “I am Syrian. You have to treat me kindly. Mrs Merkel invited me.”

The minutes document a presentation from Frans Timmermans, the first vice president of the EC and deputy to President Jean-Claude Juncker.

It said: “As far as the crimes in Cologne were concerned, he said that these were a matter of public order and were not related to the refugee crisis.

Officials stressed “the importance of the Commission continuing to play its coordinating role and sounding the voice of reason to defuse tensions and counter populist rhetoric.”

They called for “the unconditional rejection of false associations between certain criminal acts, such as the attacks on women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve, and the mass influx of refugees”.

The minutes added that “they agreed that they must “respond to the concerns of European citizens, particularly by stressing that Europe was also a union of security and values”.”

  14. Facebook and Instagram ban private gun adverts (BBC, Jan 30, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-35448203

“Private individuals will no longer be allowed to advertise guns on Facebook and Instagram, the photo-sharing service owned by Facebook.

Facebook had already banned the sale of guns without identity checks, but the new rules aim to stop all gun trade between individuals on the sites.

Businesses can still advertise guns on Facebook and Instagram.

The move comes three weeks after US President Barack Obama unveiled new restrictions on gun purchases.

Mr Obama’s executive actions included background checks for all gun sellers and the requirement that states provide information on people disqualified from buying guns due to mental illness or domestic violence.

The rule change brings gun sales under the same restrictions placed by Facebook on illegal drugs and pharmaceuticals by Facebook. The site has 1.59bn users worldwide.

Facebook “was unfortunately and unwittingly serving as an online platform for dangerous people to get guns”, Shannon Watts, of the Everytown for Gun Safety campaign group, told Associated Press.

The group said it had found evidence that guns had been bought on the site and used to kill others in two cases.

Everytown for Gun Safety was one of a number of groups that had called on Facebook to change its policy.

The National Rifle Association (NRA), which opposes changes to gun legislation, has not yet responded to Facebook’s decision…”

The sharp shooter is said to have perfected his skills during the 2011 uprising against dictator Colonel Gaddafi…”

  16. Is a secret sniper killing off Isil’s high command in Libya?
Mystery gunman credited with shooting three of the terror group’s leaders in their new “Caliphate” in Colonel Gaddafi’s home city of Sirte

As befits all the best practitioners of his shadowy trade, no-one is quite sure whether he is one man or many, or even simply an urban legend.

But after a string of assassinations of its local henchmen, the Islamic State’s new “Caliphate” in the Libyan city of Sirte is abuzz with talk that an anti-Isil sniper is at work.

In recent weeks, no fewer than three Isil commanders in Sirte have been shot dead from long range, according to local media.

The killings – reported to be the work of a sniper who honed his skills in Libya’s uprising against Colonel Gaddafi – are said to have sowed panic among Isil’s forces in the city, who have carried a string of arrests and executions in a bid to track down the culprit.

The Sirte assassin’s most recent casualty, according to social media reports from Sirte, was Abdullah Hamad Al-Ansari, an Isil commander from southern Libyan city of Obari, who was shot dead on January 23 as he left a city centre mosque.

The birthplace of Libya’s late Colonel Gaddafi, Sirte has been under Islamic State control since last summer, Libyan intelligence officials estimating that there may now be up to 2,000 jihadist fighters now based there.

The port city’s new masters have made brutal examples of opponents, via a regime of floggings and beheadings enforced by black-masked religious police.

The U.S. Navy sent a ship near a contested island in the South China Sea on Saturday to challenge “excessive maritime claims that restrict the rights and freedoms of the United States and others,” a U.S. Defense Department spokesman told CNN.

“This operation challenged attempts by the three claimants, China, Taiwan and Vietnam, to restrict navigation rights and freedoms around the features they claim by policies that require prior permission or notification of transit within territorial seas,” Cmdr. Bill Urban said.

“This operation demonstrates, as President Obama and Secretary [Ash] Carter have stated, the United States will fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows. That is true in the South China Sea, as in other places around the globe.”

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AFP) — Dozens of masked men believed to belong to neo-Nazi gangs carried out a number of assaults on migrants in Stockholm overnight amid rising tension over immigration, Swedish police said Saturday.

Police had beefed up their presence in the city center, deploying anti-riot and helicopter units after learning that extremists were planning “aggression on unaccompanied migrant minors” in the city late on Friday.

AMMAN/GENEVA (Reuters) – A delegation from Syria’s main opposition group flew to Geneva on Saturday to assess whether to join Damascus government officials in United Nations-brokered peace talks, an opposition representative said.

The 17-strong team included the head of the Saudi-backed Higher Negotiation Committee (HNC), which includes political and militant opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s five-year civil war.

The HNC has said it wants to discuss humanitarian issues including a stop to Russian and Syrian government bombing before engaging in the peace talks that started on Friday in Geneva.

Russian air strikes on Syria have killed nearly 1,400 civilians since Moscow started its aerial campaign nearly four months ago, monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said on Saturday.

  23. Almost 40 dead after migrant boat sinks off Turkey

ANKARA (Reuters) – Almost 40 people drowned and 75 were rescued after a boat carrying migrants to Greece sank off Turkey’s western coast on Saturday, according to local officials and the Turkish Dogan news agency.

More than one million refugees and migrants arrived in the European Union last year and some 3,600 died or went missing, forcing the EU to mull suspending its Schengen open-borders area for up to two years.

The Turkish coast guard was continuing search and rescue efforts where the 17-metre boat carrying at least 120 people sank off the coast of Ayvacik, a town across from the Greek island of Lesvos, the Dogan news agency reported.

“I am afraid the numbers will rise as divers continue the search,” Mehmet Unal Sahin, the mayor of Ayvacik, told the CNNTurk news channel by phone.

“Local people woke up to the sound of screaming migrants and we have been carrying out rescue work since dawn. We have an 80-kilometre-long coast just across from Lesbos, which is very hard to keep under control.”

  24. Germany’s Merkel says refugees must return home once war over

NEUBRANDENBURG, Germany (Reuters) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday tried to placate the increasingly vocal critics of her open-door policy for refugees, insisting that asylum seekers from Syria and Iraq would go home once the conflicts there had ended.

Merkel, despite appearing increasingly isolated over her policy, has resisted pressure from some conservatives to cap the influx of refugees, or to close Germany’s borders. A record 1.1 million migrants arrived in Germany last year.

But growing concern about the country’s ability to cope and worries about crime and security after assaults on women are weighing on support for Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU).

Merkel said that despite efforts to integrate refugees and help them, it was important to stress that they had only been given permission to stay for a limited period of time.

“We need … to say to people that this is a temporary residential status and we expect that once there is peace in Syria again, once IS has been defeated in Iraq, that you go back to your home country with the knowledge that you have gained,” she said at a meeting of CDU members in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

  26. SWEDEN – Man ‘stabs wife 66 times and cuts off her nose and upper lip in alleged honour killing’

A PROSECUTOR has demanded that a man who allegedly stabbed his wife 66 times in an honour killing is put away for life.

The court also heard the depraved father-of-two cut off his wife’s nose and upper lip.

Public Prosecutor Tomas Malmenby urged the court to sentence the alleged murderer to life in jail.

The alleged honour killing happened in Stockholm’s suburb of Årsta.

According to a psychiatric report the 52-year-old man was of sound mind when he allegedly murdered his wife on September 10 last year.

In Mr Malmenby’s closing statement at The District Court of Södertörn he demanded the suspect be jailed for the “brutal violence”.

He told the court: “It happened in her home, a place where you feel the greatest security.

“It has hit the two children [hard]. Within a few minutes they lost both their parents. The violence has been brutal and extensive.”

Mr Malmenby told the court that the woman, who was in her 40s, had been subjected to long-term suffering.

He told the court: “It was a prolonged process. She must have felt the agony of death [coming].”

The woman allegedly died in the bedroom of the couple’s home after being stabbed 66 times.

The court heard that the husband could only remember being in the hallway with a knife in his hand.

According to Mr Malmenby the murdered woman had defensive wounds, suggesting she fought her alleged attacker.

Testifying in court, a neighbour of the pair said that desperate cries from a woman could be heard on the night in question.

Mr Malmenby said: “There are no extenuating circumstances. 66 stab wounds is not [in the heat of the moment].”

The man’s Defence Counsel, lawyer Serpil Güngör, said in her final statement that her client should be given a fixed-term sentence – not life.

A ruling is expected on February 10.

  28. Anti-Islamic group Pegida Ireland to be launched at Dublin rally

Launch on February 6th designed to coincide with anti-Islam protests across Europe

Anti-Islamisation group Pegida, which was founded in Germany, will formally announce an Irish branch at a protest rally in Dublin next weekend. It is among a series of Europe-wide demonstrations against the growth of Islam in Europe.

Peter O’Loughlin of Identity Ireland confirmed that Pegida Ireland would be unveiled at a rally on February 6th in Dublin. He said Ireland would become the 15th country to establish a branch of the organisation.

“Pegida [Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident, in German] is making international headlines,” Mr O’Loughlin said. “It is giving the people of Europe a chance to speak out and have a voice against the absolutely disastrous policies of the EU and of the German government and the various puppet governments around Europe.”

Mr O’Loughlin, who will be running for Identity Ireland in Cork North Central, was speaking at a press conference where he introduced Pegida UK co-ordinator and former English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson.

Mr Robinson said he was delighted to have an opportunity to warn people in Ireland about the dangers of radical Islam. He said Ireland should look to Britain to see the mistakes made by allowing in large numbers of Muslims who fail to integrate.

“We have polarised communities, we have segregated communities, we have Islamic ghettoes – we have an epidemic of jihad rape gangs targeting English girls . . . these are the realities which are on their way to Ireland.”

Mr Robinson, whose mother is from Dublin, said when he founded the English Defence League six years ago, British politicians said he was extremist; now they recognised the dangers posed by radical Islam.

“The majority of the world accepts this mindset – which we called Isis and which is a literal interpretation of Islam – is a danger to us all. You have a population of 4.5 million people, you cannot sustain open borders, you have to close your borders as does the rest of Europe.”

Mr O’Loughlin, who won 930 votes for Identity Ireland in the Carlow-Kilkenny byelection last year, signed a pledge committing Identity Ireland to join anti-migration organisation Fortress Europe before Dan Ó Loinsigh read a statement on behalf of Pegida Ireland. He claimed Identity Ireland has 400 members in Ireland.

“Despite the obvious chaos engulfing Europe, our liberal leaders bury their heads in the sand and their outright refusal to engage in practicality or common sense is nothing short of treasonous,” he said. “We hope to give the Irish people the opportunity to voice their concerns in a peaceful, proactive manner against mass migration, EU economic madness and Islamic extremism.”

  29. Britain First’s Holy War: Home Office condemns ‘anti-Muslim propaganda’ as petition calls for group to be banned

A petition calling for the government to ban anti-Islam group Britain First has prompted a statement from the Home Office condemning those who “seek to spread hate by demonising British Muslims”. More than 12,000 people and an anti-Islamophobia charity have now demanded ministers take action against the Christian conservative group.

The petition accuses Britain First of being an “extremist offshoot of the BNP”, adding: “Via the internet and social media the group spews out anti-Muslim propaganda in order to fulfil their goal of a ‘Holy War’ against the Muslim community in the UK. The UK government must proscribe this party before they achieve their aims.”

Britain First told IBTimes UK the petition “can’t be taken seriously” and said its Holy War was “against the extremes of Islam, not Muslims”.

Jayda Fransen, deputy leader, said: “The fact is, our men fought, bled and died for democracy yet the left-wing believe freedom of speech should only apply to those who agree with them.

“We are a registered political party who campaign for British people to be put first in their own country. We are also a Christian movement who believe that Muslims are victims of a barbaric ideology; our Holy war is not ‘against the Muslim community in the UK’, it is against the extremes of Islam.”

[…]But in what appears to be a swipe at the group, the Home Office added: “The government condemns those who seek to spread hate by demonising British Muslims. Those who seek to divide us damage our country by stoking anti-Muslim hatred and deliberately raise community fears and tensions by bringing disorder and violence to our towns and cities.”

[…]On 30 January, the group will hold its first national march of the year through the West Yorkshire town of Dewsbury, in another attempt to transfer this online support into street-level action. The march has been condemned by local councillors who accuse the group of spreading a “message of hate”. […]

  30. Sexual Assault Victims Speak Out Against Washington’s Transgender Bathroom Policies

OLYMPIA, Wash.—A group of women who say they are former victims of sexual assault are making an emotional plea to Washington state legislators to reverse a bathroom policy that they say leaves them and their young children vulnerable, exposed and unsafe.

“It started when I was in diapers and went through until I was 10,” Kaeley Triller Haver, who is now 32, told The Daily Signal of her abuse. “I used to get watched in the shower—that was his thing.”

Gretchen Flores, a 47-year-old from Puyallup, Wash., said her abuse happened inside a locker room. “I use to get cramps in my legs when I would swim and he would tell me to come up with him,” Flores said. “He would start at the base of my leg and move up farther than he should have.”

  31. Sweden: Pro and anti-immigration protesters face off in Stockholm

  32. California Joins the Effort to Persecute, Suppress Scientific Dissent on Climate Change

California Attorney General Kamala Harris has joined New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in trying to prosecute ExxonMobil for supposedly lying to its shareholders and the public about climate change, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Times reported that Harris is investigating what ExxonMobil “knew about global warming and what the company told investors.”

Neither Harris nor Schneiderman recognizes the outrageousness of what they are doing—which amounts censoring or restricting speech and debate on what is a contentious scientific theory. In fact, they want not just to stop anyone who questions the global warming theory from being able to speak; they want to punish them with possible civil sanctions or even criminal penalties. As I said before about Schneiderman, Harris needs a remedial lesson in the First Amendment.

Perhaps we should investigate what Harris “knows” about global warming or climate change, which Harris (and Schneiderman) treats as if it is a proven, unassailable, incontrovertible fact. However, as the Heritage Foundation’s Nicolas Loris has pointed out, “flaws discovered in the scientific assessment of climate change have shown that the scientific consensus is not as settled as the public had been led to believe.”

  33. Pay No Attention to What Planned Parenthood Is Doing Behind the Curtain

In an astonishing bit of legerdemain, a local grand jury in Harris County, Texas, has refused to indict Planned Parenthood for violating a Texas statute that prohibits the attempted sale of human organs, despite the video evidence to the contrary showing Planned Parenthood doctors and executives discussing organ sales.

But the very same grand jury has indicted David Daleiden, the founder of the Center for Medical Progress (CMP), who organized, filmed, and released the undercover “60 Minutes”-style videos, for supposedly violating the very same Texas statute, which also prohibits the attempted purchase of human organs.

In other words, a private individual whose only intent is to expose possibly illegal activity is under indictment for actions in connection with an undercover video operation, but the illegal actor itself—Planned Parenthood—is off the hook. This backward situation will undoubtedly chill journalistic activity in Texas and elsewhere.

According to copies of the two charging sheets filed with the Harris County Clerk’s Office that we obtained, Daleiden and his colleague, Sandra Merritt, were also indicted for tampering with a governmental record—specifically, making and presenting a falsified California driver’s license, which is a felony.

  34. Navy SEAL Member of Congress Drops Bombshell About Iranian Capture of US Sailors

Under President Barack Obama’s regime, no one should be surprised when questions arise regarding the legitimacy of Iran’s capture of U.S. sailors.

According to the Washington Examiner, Rep. Ryan Zinke, who wrapped up a 23-year naval career in 2008 before being elected to Congress, has recently voiced some of his personal suspicions about the sailors’ detainment.

“It doesn’t add up to me that somehow two boats are stranded within the territory of Iran waters,” Rep. Zinke said on Tuesday. “There’s a lot of questions out there that we have and I think Congress and the American people should know the answers.”

  35. European Governments Ignoring Security Warnings

The head of the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST), Benedicte Bjørnland, was recently a participating guest at a security conference in Sweden, where she warned against further Muslim immigration.

One cannot,” she said, “assume that new arrivals will automatically adapt to the norms and rules of Norwegian society. Furthermore, new arrivals are not homogenous and can bring ethnic and religious strife with them… If parallel societies, radicalization and extremist environments emerge in the long run,” she added, “We will have challenges as a security service.”

The changes Bjørnland speaks of — parallel societies, radicalization and extremist environments — are nothing new; they have been proliferating throughout Western Europe for years. The Brussels suburb of Molenbeek, which was home to two of the perpetrators of November’s terror attacks in Paris, is known as a “terrorist den.” Yet the mayor of Molenbeek ignored a list she received, one month prior to the Paris attacks, “with the names and addresses of more than 80 people suspected as Islamic militants living in her area,” according to the New York Times. “What was I supposed to do about them? It is not my job to track possible terrorists,” Mayor Schepmans said. “That is the responsibility of the federal police.”

This statement is, in many ways, symptomatic of the European failure to deal with the security problems that Europe faces. The problem is always supposed to be somebody else’s.

Anders Thornberg, the head of the Swedish Security Service (SÄPO), literally begged Swedish society for help: “The Islamist environments have grown considerably in the past five years,” he said “and tensions are growing between various population groups. We need all of society to help fight the radicalization, there are limits to how much faster a security service can run.”

  37. Obama to Visit Mosque, Hold Talks With Muslims in Baltimore

President Barack Obama will meet with Muslim community members this coming week in a public show of support.

The White House says Obama plans to visit the Islamic Society of Baltimore on Wednesday and hold talks with Muslim community members. It would be the first visit to an American mosque during his presidency, according to reports.

Obama has been outspoken in pushing back against calls by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and others to block Muslims from entering the U.S. over fears of domestic terrorism linked to extremist groups.

Others have cited potential security risks in pushing legislation in Congress to limit the resettlement of refugees from Syria and Iraq, where ISIS is active.

Obama says such efforts serve only to incite extremist groups and weaken U.S. leadership around the world.

Last month, the White House held a meeting with prominent Muslim and Sikh Americans over tensions with their communities, and Islamic leaders at the time had asked Obama to visit a mosque.

President George W. Bush had visited the Islamic Cultural Center of Washington, D.C., following the 9/11 attacks.

    =======================================

Wa Po Obama to make first visit of his presidency to a U.S. mosque next week

President Obama will make the first visit during his presidency to a U.S. mosque next week, the White House announced Saturday, as the administration tries to promote religious tolerance at a time when rhetoric linking Islam with terrorism is becoming more voluminous.

On Wednesday the president will visit the Islamic Society of Baltimore, a sprawling community center in the the city’s western suburbs, that serves thousands of people with a place of worship, a housing complex and schools, according to its website. It is one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s largest Muslim centers and describes itself as aspiring “to be the anchor of a growing Muslim community with diverse backgrounds, democratically governed, relating to one another with inclusiveness and tolerance, and interacting with neighbors in an Islamic exemplary manner.

On Saturday, a White House official said in an e-mail that the president is making the visit: “to celebrate the contributions Muslim Americans make to our nation and reaffirm the importance of religious freedom to our way of life.

The President believes that one of our nation’s greatest strengths is our rich diversity and the very idea that Americans of different faiths and backgrounds can thrive together – that we’re all part of the same American family. As the President has said, Muslim Americans are our friends, and neighbors; our co-workers, and sports heroes – and our men and women in uniform defending our country.”

At the Islamic Society, the president will hold a round table with community members, the official said.

For years Muslim Americans have lobbied the president to visit a mosque in order to counter the perception that Islam is inextricably linked to terrorism.

The trip to Baltimore comes a month after several prominent Muslim Americans met with senior White House officials to discuss concerns about rising hostility toward people of their faith. During that session — attended by White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, Domestic Policy Council director Cecilia Muñoz and deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes — the Islamic leaders asked for Obama to visit a mosque, ideally with former president George W. Bush, as well.

Bush visited the Islamic Cultural Center of Washington D.C. six days after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, where he declared, “Islam is peace,” and “the face of terror is not the true faith of Islam.”

At a time when some leading Republican presidential candidates, including businessman Donald Trump, have suggested barring foreign Muslims from entering the country, Obama has taken pains to criticize rhetoric that stereotypes one faith group.

“When politicians insult Muslims, whether abroad or our fellow citizens, when a mosque is vandalized, or a kid bullied, that doesn’t make us safer,” Obama said during his State of the Union address earlier this month. “That’s not telling it like it is. It’s just wrong. It diminishes us in the eyes of the world. It makes it harder to achieve our goals. It betrays who we are as a country.”

It wasn’t immediately clear why the White House selected the Islamic Society in Baltimore, although it has been the subject of threats in recent months. Baltimore County beefed up security there last spring after it received two phone threats, one citing a bomb and the other from someone threatening to “spill Muslim blood,” CBS Baltimore reported at the time.

It also is the mosque of the family of Adnan Syed, whose conviction for murder drew huge global interest when his story was told through the radio podcast “Serial.” The series was made because of the activism of a friend of Syed’s family from the Islamic Society, Rabia Chaudry, a Greenbelt lawyer who advises law enforcement about Islam, the Baltimore Sun reported in 2014.

Obama has visited mosques overseas, but never one in this country while serving as president.

“I think it would be enormously comforting and also send powerful message to Americans about recommitting to religious freedom — especially if we had Bush and Obama visit together,” Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, a legal advocacy group, said last month when she met with the president’s aides.

Obama’s relationship with American Muslim has been complicated. They are among his most enthusiastic backers, but some feel he has not done enough to address their concerns at a time of social unrest.

He has shown support for Muslims overseas, including the 2009 “New Beginning” speech in Cairo before the Arab Spring, and he has drawn praise — and intense criticism from conservatives — for declining to connect Islam and terrorism.

However, concern about profiling and domestic surveillance at mosques has escalated under Obama, and some Muslim leaders expressed concern last year when he held a key summit about violent extremism that focused significantly on Muslim extremism.

And though Obama [ says he ] is a Christian, many Americans remain convinced he actually follows the Islamic faith. Recent polls show that 29 percent of Americans, and nearly 45 percent of Republicans, believe he is a Muslim.

  38. Thousands march in Paris rain to protest state of emergency

PARIS (AP) – Thousands of people have marched in the Paris rain to denounce plans to renew France’s state of emergency and revoke the French citizenship of dual nationals convicted of terrorism.

Human rights groups, politicians and unions joined Saturday’s march in Paris.

France imposed a state of emergency, which gives more power to police and administrative authorities, after the Nov. 13 Paris attacks that killed 130 people. It is expected to be renewed at the end of February.

Jean-Baptiste Eyrault, of the Right to Housing movement, said: “Democracy is moving backwards.”

Last week, a French high court upheld the measure, saying the danger “has not disappeared.”

Opponents of a plan to revoke citizenship claim it will feed racism.

Christiane Taubira resigned last week as justice minister over her opposition to the plan.

France: Thousands protest extending state of emergency in Paris

Thousands of left-wing activists and members of leftist syndicates and organisations gathered in Paris on Saturday to protest against the proposal of extending of the state of emergency in the city and the concept of ‘deprivation of nationality’ for persons who are assumed to be terrorists by the French government in the future.

SOT, Bastien, activist (French): “I am here to protest against the state of emergency and for the deprivation of nationality for bi-national persons (born in France) that as been planned for the Constitution. That’s important because we saw lot of drifts during the state of emergency some people were designated to residence without reasons, some rally were prohibited, some people were arrested just for protesting peacefully. That shocks me.”

SOT, Youssef Boussoumah, member of the Indigenes de la Republique party (French): “The state allows itself to take absolutely catastrophic decisions for the life and for the future of liberty in France.”

  39. Germany: Hundreds of pro-Kurdish activists march through Berlin

Around one thousand pro-Kurdish activists braved the rain and rallied peacefully through the streets of Berlin on Saturday to demonstrate in support of the Kurdish people and against the Turkish government.

SOT, speaker (German): “There should be an end with those who are criminalised in the Middle East while fighting against the terrorism. Those who are criminalised while putting their lives into risk: the Christians, the Turkmens and other minorities that fight against the bloodshed of the Islamic State. Stop the PKK ban. The PKK does not belong to the terrorism list. It should be awarded a Nobel Peace prize.”
