The German TV station ARD heard about this, and they sent their reporter Daniel Hechler to investigate, the documentary was then released under the title “A Swiss village buys itself freedom”.

The documentary begins with idyllic pictures of the small village. “Here Switzerland shows itself from it’s chocolate side. Here, the world is still ok.”

Together with the mayor of the town, Andreas Glarner, they walk through the village. “Glarner is a rich contractor, he proudly shows me his village. It has to be clean and free of refugees”, the reporter mentions in the documentary.

When Glarner is interviewed, he speaks openly. “We don’t want to take in any asylum seekers at this point.”

The reporter asks: “What will you tell a family standing at the border fence, a mother with two small children, desperately begging to get access to Europe, so she can be protected?”

“I will tell them that they came here for nothing”, Glarner uncompromisingly answers.

“Well what should they do then?”

“Turn around.”

“Why?”, the reporter asks.

“Because they are all potential welfare recipients and they will sit on our wallets for the rest of their lives,” Glarner says.

The citizens of the village have rewarder the Mayor with his hard stance on immigration with
praise and reelection. He shows emails and letters to the reporter. One reads “congratulations for your stance on freeloaders and parasites.” Glarner has hundreds of letters to show. He mentions there very rarely is any critique, and usually it comes from out of town.

“I find this all very depressing,” responds the reporter to Glarner.

His conclusion at the end of the documentary: “Such views, which in Germany would be seen as right wing radical, are apparently socially acceptable here. But in the end this town, Oberwil-Lieli, will be known as a dark stain in the history of a country with its rich tradition of humanitarian service to the european community.”

  1. I like this mayor. We need more of them. If I ever consider Switzerland as a vacation spot I will head for Oberwil-Lieli if they will have me as a tourist. The reporter who interviewed the mayor is young enough to have never experienced much of what Europe used to be like. His generation have been socially engineered to self-destruct.
