  1. Finding little welcome in Europe, refugees ask unanswerable questions (CNN, Sep 10, 2015)

“Amid the fray and all the bodies pressed against the razor wire along the Greece-Macedonia border, fingers dig into my arm.

“Please, I am pregnant. Please,” the woman said, her eyes filling with tears. “Please, I don’t want to lose my baby.”

I shouted across the large coils of razor wire to the Macedonia police. I pleaded with them to just answer one question: “Will the border open?” But, aggravatingly, they just stare ahead and refuse to answer.

“Why are they doing this to us?” the woman asked….”

  2. U.S. warns Russia on military buildup in Syria (CNN, Sep 10, 2015)

“America’s top diplomat called his Russian counterpart Wednesday to warn that Moscow’s military buildup of troops in Syria could escalate the bloody conflict there that has engulfed the region for more than four years.

The U.S. has been watching Russia’s movement of military personnel with concern for several days, though the Foreign Ministry only confirmed the buildup Wednesday.

There are “Russian military experts in Syria who are instructing (the Syrians) on the use of the military systems being delivered” to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a close Moscow ally, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.

Russia “has long been supplying arms and military equipment to Syria in accordance with bilateral contracts,” she said.

That confirmation follows repeated warnings from Secretary of State John Kerry to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about how such activity could intensify the raging civil war there.

In a call to Lavrov Wednesday, Kerry “reiterated our concern about these reports of Russian military activities, or buildup if you will, in Syria and made very clear our view that, if true and borne out, could lead to greater violence and even more instability in Syria,” State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters…”

  3. Australian police, FBI bust ‘international drug ring’ (BBC, Sep 10, 2015)

“Australian police have arrested a music promoter, an American businessman, and three others linked to an alleged international drug ring.

The five men face trafficking and money laundering charges following a joint investigation involving the FBI.

The probe was sparked by the discovery of more than A$700,000 ($495,000; £320,000) at a Sydney hotel in 2011.

New South Wales Police faced legal action over the return of the money but the case was thrown out of court.

Australian music promoter Andrew McManus claimed he had made the money from a Lenny Kravitz tour…”

  4. US official: ‘IS making and using chemical weapons in Iraq and Syria’ (BBC, Sep 11, 2015)

“There is a growing belief within the US government that the Islamic State militant group is making and using crude chemical weapons in Iraq and Syria, a US official has told the BBC.

The US has identified at least four occasions on both sides of the Iraq-Syria border where IS has used mustard agents, the official said.

The official said the chemical was being used in powder form.

A BBC team on the Turkey-Syria border has seen evidence backing these claims.

The US believes the group has a cell dedicated to building these weapons.

“They’re using mustard,” the individual said of IS. “We know they are.”

The mustard agent was probably being used in powder form and packed into traditional explosives like mortar rounds, the official said.

“We’ve seen them use it on at least four separate occasions on both sides of the border – both Iraq and Syria.”

When these weapons explode the mustard-laced dust blisters those who are exposed to it…”
