2. The most recent decent Maher clip where he shows that he seems to have figured it out and more importantly, is willing to speak about it.
I find this clip interesting because I think both of them are wrong on some subtle points. The guest of course is trying to use the wedge strategy (50 seconds he tips his hand on that) which appears to be the province of the media and government elite who are trying to drive a wedge between the pointy end of the spear and the handle, or less allegorically, the jihadis and the water carriers. (At about 1:40 he nearly literally explains that this is what he is doing) There are a number of points where he was wrong as well as using fallacious logic but his misdirections seemed to be to the purpose of driving that wedge in.
Besides the fact that lying to achieve your goals is ethically problematic, the main problem not only is that it doesn’t work but lying to teenage, culturally-muslim boys about their religion in a tissue paper thin way only to have them discover they are being lied to by media and government is likely a large factor in their decisions to go full on jihadi. After all, what would generate more hate? Telling the truth about a history you don’t have to be connected to, or claiming you, your family and your history are something they obviously are not.
The speaker at 2:00 also omits the most important bullet point and that is that the actions of the jihadis can be justified and even shown to be compulsory by all islamic scripture and history as well as the example of the pirate mohamed.
(Just to be clear on this, as I find this headline to be so stunning that no matter how often I read it, I have a tough time absorbing the horror of it. THE LEADER OF THE ISLAMIC STATE HAS ORDERED THAT TWO MILLION GIRLS HAVE THEIR GENITALS ‘SURGICALLY’ MUTILATED)
The leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham has asked all families around Iraq’s northern city of Mosul to circumcise their daughters or face severe punishment.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the self-declared Islamic State, has ordered the female genital mutilation of two million Iraqi girls to “distance them from debauchery and immorality”.
The “fatwa” issued by the Sunni Muslim fighters would potentially affect four million women and girls, the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Iraq Jacqueline Badcock told reporters in Geneva by video from Irbil.
“This is something very new for Iraq, particularly in this area, and is of grave concern and does need to be addressed,” she said.
Speaking to BasNews, a spokesman for Mosul police, Ahmed Obaydi, said: “Baghdadi’s decision to have all women circumcised is, as he claims, to prevent immorality and promote Islamic attitudes among Muslims. The decision was made by Baghdadi as a ‘gift’ for people in Mosul.”
The decision has, however, sparked outrage by human rights organisations, who said that genital cutting exposes women to an increased risk of disease.
(I guess women over 30 have their own genitals ‘grandfathered’ in by the new law)
Thank you M., GoV., UK Pete, Buck, Richard and all. More to come but I think three is enough for this post.
