“Islamist militants from Nigeria’s Boko Haram have reportedly killed 48 people in an attack on fish sellers near the border with Chad.
A fish traders’ group said some victims had their throats slit whilst others were tied up and drowned in Lake Chad.
The attack took place on Thursday, but the news took several days to come to light because Boko Haram has destroyed mobile phone masts in the area.
It was the second major attack in two days by Boko Haram.
In Thursday’s attack, the traders were on their way to Chad to buy fish when militants blocked their path near the village of Doron Baga, some 180km (112 miles) north of Maiduguri in Borno state.
Abubakar Gamandi, the head of the fish sellers’ association, said the militants had used no guns.
“The attackers killed their victims silently without the use of the gun to avoid attracting attention from the multi-national troops,” he told AFP news agency.
Troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger have been deployed to the area and have a base at Doron Baga, but the military task force has had little impact, says the BBC’s Will Ross in Lagos…”

CANADA – MONTREAL – 15-year old Montrealer radicalized
Montreal police and the Mounties have taken an interest in a 15-year old boy awaiting sentencing for a convenience store robbery on the West Island last month.
They want to know how a private school student who’d never had any academic or behavioural problems became radicalized.
The teen confessed to police that he intended to use the proceeds from the hold-up – about $2200 – to pay for a plane ticket to a country where he could live under Muslim law. He said he didn’t like living among infidels in Canada.
La Presse says it was the boy’s father who called police, worried about the teen’s radicalization.
After his arrest, a search of the teen’s computer showed that he’d been in Facebook contact with Martin Couture-Rouleau, the Muslim convert who killed a soldier with his car in St. Jean sur Richelieu last month.
Investigators also found jihadist videos on the computer.
The boy is being held in youth detention pending sentencing.

During a news conference Wednesday which cast aspects of a film about al-Qaida at the new 9/11 museum as prejudiced toward Muslims, a speaker invoked the anti-Semitic claim that Jews killed Jesus.
Talat Hamdani, whose son Salman Hamdani was a Muslim New York Police Department cadet killed on 9/11, said religion often is overlooked in other historic crimes.
“Who crucified Jesus?” she said. “Do we ever question that? Bring in the fact that not only the Romans but there were Jews who crucified Jesus?”
Jewish groups say the claim that Jews killed Jesus is one of the strongest messages fueling violent anti-Semitism. The State Department has cited similar statements in its annual reports on Global Anti-Semitism. Though it is still a widely-held belief, Pope Benedict wrote in 2011 that Jews were not responsible for the crucifixion.
No one at the news conference tried to correct Hamdani’s statement or walk it back.
The news conference came on the day the September 11 National Memorial Museum opened to New York’s first responders and victims’ families. It opens to the public May 21.
Islamist groups and their allies have taken issue with the 7-minute film, “The Rise of Al-Qaeda,” since a screening last month. On Wednesday, they reiterated their belief that its references to jihad and Islamist violence are unfair and could leave visitors blaming the entire faith of Islam and all Muslims for the attacks.
Speakers included New York City Councilman Robert Jackson, Rev. Chloe Breyer, daughter of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, and Zead Ramadan of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) New York chapter.
“Suicidal terrorism” and “violent extremism” are more accurate descriptions, Ramadan said. He invoked Charles Manson, who was able to get people to do bad things. “It’s unfortunate that there are people who are suicidal and not very guided, and they can be manipulated.”
But al-Qaida’s core ideology relies on religious justification for violence.
“The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies – civilian and military – is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it…,” Osama bin Laden wrote in his 1998 fatwa. In a 2002 letter, he cited a passage from the Quran:
“Permission to fight (against disbelievers) is given to those (believers) who are fought against, because they have been wronged and surely, Allah is Able to give them (believers) victory” [Quran 22:39]

Extravagant wedding plans by Saddam’s granddaughter cause a stir
BAGHDAD, Iraq – The late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s granddaughter has stirred up a small storm by posting a series of pictures of her wedding preparations, garnering criticism for the family’s extravagance at a time when so many Iraqis are suffering.
The wedding of Banan, daughter of Raghd and granddaughter to Saddam, is set to take place in Amman, the Jordanian capital.
The invitation cards and some other wedding accessories are in the shape of Saddam’s Baath party logo, and flags shown are old ones from the dictator’s time.
The reception is reportedly due to take place on Monday at one of Amman’s most exclusive hotels.
The pictures, uploaded on Instagram, have caused a controversy on all sides, criticized by tribal leaders and locals alike. Many are angry because they suspect the luxuries are being paid by money stolen by Saddam during his dictatorial rule.
Falah Nada, chief of Saddam’s Nada tribe in Tikrit, has been at the forefront of the criticism, particularly noting that the wedding takes place in this manner at a time of turmoil in Iraq.
“They should have respected the people, tribe and relatives in Iraq at this critical time, when they are displaced and many are in bad conditions,” he told the Elaf newspaper,
“How can they publicly hold such a wedding on this magnitude when they could have helped people with that money?” he said. “They should have kept their family affairs private. How can the granddaughter of Saddam Hussein post pictures in such revealing dresses and hug the groom like that?” he said furiously.
This comes at a time when Saddam’s tomb was bombed nearly three months ago.
Hussein Kamil Majeed, Banan’s father, was Iraq’s minister of industry. But in 1995 he fled for Jordan together with his family and brother, and from there denounced Saddam. In 1996, Saddam publicly announced he had forgiven them and asked them to return. When they did, he had Majeed and his brother both executed.

USA – Saudi National Detained at Fort Sam Houston
According to Military Officials, the man that drove through the gate at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio was a Saudi National.
Military officials say explosive materials were reportedly found in his car.
The unidentified man was taken into custody and officials are still trying to determine his motive.
Military officials are not calling this an attempted terrorist attack.
KCEN’s sister station, KENS-TV reported that a driver was in custody after driving through a gate at the base without stopping, triggering a manhunt.

Egyptian honour killing: Brother cuts pregnant sister’s throat
Sister was not married
Honour crimes are reportedly on the rise in Egypt. However, a report in the ‘Al Youm Al Sabea’a’ newspaper, details a ghastly honour killing involving a 32-year-old Egyptian identified as Sa’ad M and his younger sister.
Arrested for the murder of his sister, the young man is reported as telling the police that honour is very important for families and there is no tolerance for actions which spoil reputations of families.
The report states that he accompanied his sister, identified as Hana’a, to the wedding of a cousin. “While she was dancing with the ladies around the bride she fell on the floor,” he is quoted as saying.
Women at the wedding checked her and found that she is pregnant.
“My sister is not married. I was angry and asked for a doctor. The doctor came and confirmed that she is three months pregnant,” he said.
“I couldn’t bear the shock. I took a knife and cut her throat.”
The police arrested him and have referred the case to the public prosecution.
