(Reuters) – China has jailed almost two dozen people including “wild imams” who preach illegally in the western region of Xinjiang where the government says Islamists are waging a violent campaign for a separate state, Chinese media reported on Tuesday.
The 22 suspects were sentenced to prison terms ranging from five to 16 years at a mass public sentencing in Xinjiang on Monday, the state-controlled China News Service reported.

A taxi driver, his uncle and nephew are accused of raping a drunk schoolteacher on a park bench after abducting her in his cab, a court heard.
The unconscious woman is alleged to have passed out after drinking at a birthday celebration before she came round to find one of her abusers having sex with her.
Private hire driver Tamseel Virk, 42; uncle and nephew, Azad Raja, 38, and Wakar Akhtar, 21, along with Najeem Ul-Saeed, 31, all of Bradford, West Yorks, are standing trial at Bradford Crown Court accused of conspiracy to rape between May 25 and 26 this year.
Prosecutor Andrew Kershaw told the jury that Virk picked up the woman from a street in Leeds, West Yorks., in breach of his licence, shortly before midnight on May 25.
Mr Kershaw suggested the fare was not reported to Virk’s controller because he had identified a vulnerable woman who could be sexually exploited.
The court heard she was ‘noticeably affected’ after drinking lager and whisky in a pub with friends, ‘talking gibberish’ and left her jacket, handbag and phone behind.
Mr Kershaw said Virk ‘delivered’ her to Akhtar and Raja, getting her to commit a sex act on him on the way.
The jury heard she was dropped off near their home and raped in turn on a bench in Great Horton Park, Bradford, while she was unconscious.
Mr Kershaw said: “They manhandled her, causing bruises and minor injuries to both of her knees, as if she were put in a kneeling position on the ground.”
The jury was told the victim woke up while Raja was having sex with her. Akhtar is alleged to have told her he had already had sex with her.
Ul-Saeed, the lawyer added, then turned up ‘too late physically to join in the rape that he had set up.’
Mr Kershaw added: “The prosecution case is that there was a conspiracy to rape (the woman) while she was in no fit state either to consent or resist.
“Akhtar and Raja conspired to rape her because they both agreed to do so; to take delivery of her and rape her together in each other’s presence.
“Virk, the prosecution say, is part of the same agreement because he delivered the girl to Akhtar and Raja for them to rape her.
“Virk knew that she was in no fit state to consent or resist because he had been able to abduct her to Great Horton Park, rather than take her home.
“Ul-Saeed is also part of the same agreement because he trafficked her from Virk to Akhtar and arranged where and to whom she was to be delivered; he tried to organise a hotel room and attended at the park to join in but was too? late because she had regained consciousness by then.”
The four men deny the charges and the trial continues.

“A hardline cleric in Pakistan is teaching the ideas of Osama Bin Laden in religious schools for about 5,000 children. Even while the Pakistani government fights the Taliban in the north-west of the country, it has no plans to close schools educating the next generation of pro-Taliban jihadis.
“We share the same objectives as the Taliban but we don’t offer military training. We work on minds. The Taliban are more hands-on,” says Abdul Aziz Ghazi, imam of Islamabad’s controversial Red Mosque.
“We teach about the principles of jihad. It’s up to students if they want to get military training after they leave here. We don’t discourage them.”
Ghazi runs eight seminaries – madrassas as they are known – the first of which was founded after his father went on a journey to meet Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan.
“Osama Bin Laden is a hero for us all. He stood up to America and he won. He inspired the mission of the school,” says Ghazi.
In one of the seminaries, the library is named in honour of Bin Laden, who was killed by US Navy Seals in Pakistan in 2011….”

The intelligence assessment, further, said he “may have held a long-standing interest in violent jihad.”

TURKEY – US soldiers attacked with dye in Istanbul by nationalist youth group
A group of Turkish nationalist students attacked NATO soldiers in the touristic Eminönü district of Istanbul, putting sacks over their heads and throwing dye on them Nov. 12.
Members of the nationalist Turkish Youth Union (TGB) followed three NATO soldiers, who were thought to be U.S. citizens, as they exited the USS ROSS, which is currently docked on the coast of the Sarayburnu neighborhood of Eminönü for four days after returning from a NATO exercise in the Black Sea.
The TGB members shouted slogans “Yankee Go Home,” “Damn American Imperialism” and threw red dye on the soldiers while also putting sacks over their heads. The alleged U.S. soldiers in civilian clothing escaped by running away.
“You declared that you are a member of the U.S. army. We define you as murderers. We want you to leave our land,” a man is heard shouting at the soldier in the video released by the group.
“We are using our right to protest you,” the protester also shouted.

TURKEY – Stray puppy in Bursa saved after ears cut off
A group of workers have found a tortured stray puppy in a construction field near the western Turkish province of Bursa in the latest case of ill-treatment against street animals.
The young dog was bleeding and had its ears cut when teams from the municipal veterinary institution were dispatched to the scene, and it was immediately taken for surgery.
“Her ears were cut from their base. But we have successfully conducted a plastic esthetic surgery. Our puppy, which we have named ‘Can,’ will be able to regain her health soon” said veterinary surgeon Ay?e Yaz?c? following the operation.
Animal rights activists have long complained about the lack of legal provisions regarding the torture of animals without owners. But the local veterinary department head, Mürsel Büyükçoban, stressed that the current law does contain measures against those who cut the ears or the tail of animals.
“Unfortunately, there are people still doing it despite all the warnings and sanctions. This is just inhumane,” Büyükçoban said.
Many recent cases of violence and sexual abuse against animals have prompted activists to demand more severe punishments for the perpetrators.
A house containing the slaughtered cadavers of dogs and cats was recently found in Istanbul, again drawing attention to the worrying increase in such cases.
A woman who was captured on security cameras kicking to death stray kittens was caught last August by police in Istanbul, while a man was also captured on film raping a dog in the Ka??thane district of the city. Another man in Eski?ehir was captured after beating a stray dog to death.
Lawyers say changes are necessary for such offenses in the current Turkish law, which considers animals as “property” depending on whether or not they have an owner. At present, culprits may only be fined in cases of violence against street animals.

USA – Appeals court will revisit order to remove anti-Islamic film from YouTube
Nov 12 (Reuters) – A U.S. appeals court said on Wednesday it will reconsider an order directing Google Inc to remove from its YouTube video sharing service an anti-Islamic film that sparked protests across the Muslim world.
Earlier this year a three-judge panel on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ordered Google to take down the film. An 11-judge panel will now rehear the YouTube case, the court said.
A Google spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment, nor could an attorney for the plaintiff who appeared in the film.
Cindy Lee Garcia objected to the film after learning that it incorporated a clip she had made for a different movie, which had been partially dubbed and in which she appeared to be asking: “Is your Mohammed a child molester?”
By a 2-1 vote, a 9th Circuit panel rejected Google’s assertion that the removal of the film “Innocence of Muslims” amounted to a prior restraint of speech that violated the U.S. Constitution.
The controversial film, billed as a trailer, depicted the Prophet Mohammed as a fool and a sexual deviant. It sparked a torrent of anti-American unrest among Muslims in Egypt, Libya and other countries in 2012.
That outbreak coincided with an attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya. U.S. and other foreign embassies were also stormed in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
For many Muslims, any depiction of the prophet is considered blasphemous.
Google had refused to remove the film from YouTube, despite pressure from the White House and others, though it blocked the trailer in Egypt, Libya and certain other countries.

I have mixed feelings about the turmoil in China’s western Provence of Xinjiang. That area was muslim long before the Chinese took it over. In typical communist fashion the Chinese imported tens of thousands of Chinese to subjugate the natives and harvest the natural resources.
I saw a documentary filmed about 20 years ago and ALL of the ancient artifacts and architecture were Islamic. These natives have more in common with the “stans” than they do with China. They are genetically Mongols, not Chinese.
My feelings about Islam in general to one side, I do not blame the natives for lashing out at China.
