  3. Islamic State leader al-Baghdadi hurt in US-led strikes

    Coalition airstrike targets a gathering of IS leaders in Iraqi province of Anbar; several other IS leaders said to have been wounded and killed.

    Islamic State leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was said to be critically wounded in a US-led airstrike in the city of Al-Qaim, on the Iraq-Syria border, tribal sources in Iraq told Al Arabiya on Saturday.

    The sources added that a number of other Islamic State leaders were killed in the strike that targeted a gathering of Islamic State leaders in Iraq’s western province of Anbar.

    MP for Iraq’s Anbar province, Mohammed al-Karbouli, told the Saudi network that coalition planes fired two missiles at a central area in the city of al-Qa’im, causing dozens of deaths and injuries.

    The wounded were taken to the local hospital, and the attack led to the blocking of all roads in the area.

    Iraqi security officials were not immediately available for comment on the report, and there was no immediate word from the US military.

    American-led coalition targets meeting of IS leaders in Iraq

    Unconfirmed reports that the leader of IS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was among those hit

    A meeting of top Islamic State (IS) officials, possibly including the group’s overall leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was the target of a US-led coalition airstike reported Al-Hadath television channel Saturday.

    Tribal sources in the border city of Qaim, where the strike occurred, told Al Arabiya that the leader of IS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was among those who was participating in the meeting targeted by the airstike and was critically injured.

    US officials have yet to confirm or deny if Baghdadi, the group’s overall leader, had been targeted, but a number of high ranking IS officials are reported to have been killed or injured.

    Iraq’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that among those killed in the airstrike was IS spokesperson Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, and witnesses in Qaim have reported that the IS regional leader of Anbar as well as the deputy leader have been killed.

    Mohammed al-Karbouli, an MP for Iraq’s Anbar province confirmed that “the international coalition targeted a meeting of the leaders of IS Saturday evening, killing and injuring dozens.”

    Karbouli added that IS fighters had arrived to the hospital in a panic and evacuating it so that their wounded could be treated.

    Two witnesses also confirmed to Reuters that the airstrike targeted a house, known to be where IS officials were meeting.

    A US official confirmed that they had carried out strikes on an IS convoy near the Iraqi city of Mosul but did not confirm the strike in Qaim.
