Around 250 adherents of the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) gathered to protest against an imam school to be built in Vienna, Thursday evening.

Johann Gudenus, a member of the party, addressed the crowd and was applauded after claiming that Austria’s Muslim population do not wish to assimilate.

Around 70 counter-protesters mobilised against the demonstration, but were kept at a distance by the police.

7. ??Chairman of the joint chiefs of staff says US military learning from Israel’s “extraordinary lengths to limit collateral damage and civilian casualties.”

Dempsey praised the IDF for taking “extraordinary lengths to limit collateral damage and civilian casualties” in its war against Hamas. The militant organization, Dempsey said, “had become very nearly a subterranean society,” burrowing underground and hiding amongst the civilian population.

“We sent a team of senior officers and non-commissioned officers over to work with the IDF to get the lessons from that particular operation in Gaza,” he told an audience at the Carnegie Endowment. He referred to the group of officers as the “lessons learned team.”

Dempsey noted Israel’s development of new techniques, such as “roof knocking,” warning residents of an incoming strike.

  1. Central Command general to ISIS: We can hear you (CNN, Nov 6, 2014)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/11/06/world/general-isis/index.html

“The top U.S. military commander in the fight against ISIS said airstrikes are working to erode the terror group’s capabilities and warned militants that the U.S. military is listening to them. Army Gen. Lloyd Austin, who heads the U.S. Central Command, made those remarks at an event Thursday with the Atlantic Council, which was moderated by CNN anchor and Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper. “I’m confident we’re having the desired effects,” Austin said of airstrikes in Syria and Iraq aimed at ISIS…..

Austin also said the strikes have significantly degraded the group’s ability to communicate and added the coalition was able to listen in on ISIS communications. “As we listen to them, we know that the impact of the precision strikes is demoralizing to them.”…..

Austin acknowledged the ISIS propaganda effort was having a major impact in recruitment for the group.”They really understand the value of dominating the media space. I think they’re about as good as I’ve seen.” He said their numbers of committed fighters was likely between 9,000-17,000, a figure much lower than previous U.S. estimates…..

“Turkey has skin in the game here, obviously. It’s got a set of concerns and we need to be mindful of that,” Austin said, adding that the coalition would “get it done” with or without more support from the Turks…..”

    • But why tell/b> them?
They’d figure it out sooner or later, but why blow it yourselves.

It’s like Israelis warning Gazans to leave the house. That’s intended to spare lives. What is the objective of America in bombing IS?

  2. Jihadists ‘using cruise ships’ to reach Middle East war zones (BBC, Nov 6, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-29944580

“Would-be jihadists have been travelling on cruise ships to reach conflict areas in the Middle East, Interpol has said. The international police body said some of those trying to join militant groups in Iraq and Syria had used cruise lines to get to countries including Turkey.

It said checks to passenger lists should be extended from airlines to cruise operators before the issue became more of a problem. No figures were put on how many militants had travelled in this way.

Speaking in Monaco, Interpol’s outgoing chief, Ronald Noble, said countries should conduct checks on all passengers using airports “and, more and more, cruise lines”.

The Turkish authorities say they have deported hundreds of suspected foreign jihadists in recent months after detaining them at airports and bus stations.

Interpol’s director of counterterrorism, Pierre St Hilaire, told AP news agency that this had led prospective fighters to make alternative travel arrangements in an effort to avoid detection.

“Because they know the airports are monitored more closely now, there’s a use of cruise ships to travel to those areas,” he said.

Regular stops at ports in the region would allow prospective fighters to disembark undetected and make their onward journey to Syria or Iraq untracked by security agencies….”

  3. 4/ Talk about closing the barn door after the cows have gotten out. In 2000, the poverty and over-crowding in Egypt were appalling. It’s hard to imagine that they’ve managed to pack another 25 million destitute children along the riverbanks and into the delta since then. What a disaster.

  5. A confidential IAEA report says in ongoing nuclear talks Iran has failed to address suspicions it may have researched how to build an atomic bomb

Iran is failing to address suspicions it may have researched how to build an atomic bomb, a U.N. watchdog’s report showed on Friday, potentially complicating efforts by six powers to reach a nuclear deal with Tehran.

The report by the International Atomic Energy Agency on Iran’s nuclear program said Tehran had still not provided information about two specific areas of the IAEA’s investigation that it was supposed to do more than two months ago.

The confidential document was issued to IAEA member states less than three weeks before a self-imposed Nov. 24 deadline for Iran and the six global powers to end a decade-old standoff over the Islamic Republic’s atomic activities.

  6. Anjem CHoudary ready to give up citizenship, join ISIS

A radical British cleric said that he was ready to give up his British citizenship and live under the rule of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – if guaranteed safe passage by the UK government, UK-newspaper The Times reported Friday.

Anjem Choudary, who denied being in touch with any ISIS militant and said he would consider renouncing his British nationality only “as a last resort.”

“I want to know from the Home Office and the crown prosecution service if it is illegal for me to travel to live in the Islamic State if I have no intention of carrying out acts of terrorism,” the London-born cleric said.

“I believe the world belongs to God and that one day, hopefully, the UK will be part of an Islamic State. Why shouldn’t I be free to travel to the khilafah [caliphate] and see what life is like under the Shariah [Islamic law]?” he added.

Choudary, whose passport was confiscated by authorities in September when he was arrested on accusations of belonging to a designated terrorist organization, said he would have already travelled to the areas controlled by the extremists if police had returned his passport.

[…] Keith Vaz, the chairman of the UK government’s home affairs select committee, said on Thursday: “If he wants to go, he should be allowed to go. I think that would be a much better scenario than having him stay.”

“Why should the Home Office or anyone else give him safe passage? He must take the consequences if he is propagating the views of ISIS, then he is putting himself at risk of prosecution. I think people would like to see the back of him,” Vaz added.

    • For God sake, let him go! And take his welfare family(ies) with him. Revoke his passport and let him live under the Sharia that he so loves and advocates for.
What the hell is wrong with the British gov’t that they don’t take him up on his offer?

  7. Nov 07 2014 – Coordinated bombings in Gaza spark accusations, security concerns

Gazans woke up early Friday morning to ten simultaneous blasts across the Gaza Strip which targeted the homes and cars of Fatah leaders and officials.

This is the first time Gazans have seen coordinated attacks at the homes of political leaders. Homes and property hit on Friday morning included those of the governor of Gaza, Abdullah Al-Ifranji, and Fatah Legislative Council member, Fisal Abu-Shahlah.

At the scene of one of the blasts, Fatah leader Fayez Abu Etta, stood among piles of shattered glass around his destroyed car. The gates of his home in Jabalyia Refugee camp also sustained damage. He refused to comment on who might be behind the blast.

One of the bombs targeted the mass-stage designed for an event next week to commemorate the death of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, one of the first such celebrations since 2007.

Palestinian unity government Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah abruptly cancelled his visit to Gaza, scheduled for Saturday, after the bombing.

There were no immediate reports of causalities after the explosions which occurred on a weekend day in the Strip’s largest city where streets were much less busy than during the working week. A crowd of police officers and investigators arrived to various blast scenes while the Ministry of Interior and National Forces told Middle East Eye that its forces launched an investigation.

“We will not allow the Gaza Strip to get back to internal conflict and security chaos,” the statement said. “We will chase all those involved in such criminal work.”

    […]On the edge of explosion

While much of the focus this week has been on escalating tensions in Jerusalem, analysts and observers say that Gaza is on the edge of explosion. They anticipate a renewed round of violence between Israel and Gaza, as a result of the siege imposed on Gaza, the closure of the enclave’s crossings and the failure of Israel to honour the ceasefire agreement in Cairo.

The situation is also tense inside Gaza. Hundreds of police officers, who have not seen wages in nine months, are expected to take to the streets in Gaza late Friday to protest because the unity government has not yet paid their salaries. Last week, the Palestinian unity government distributed $1200 to an estimated 24,000 out of 43,000 civil servants employed by the previous government. Police officers and others employed in security, however, were not offered handouts.

Following Friday’s blast, many political groups tied the problems of the new unity government to what they say is a deteriorating security situation on the Strip.

“We demand security forces to quickly move to reveal the criminals,” said the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine in a statement on Friday. The explosion, the statement added, is a dangerous development which could divert the fight against Israeli occupation.

Anwar Jima, spokesman of Al-Nidal Popular Front said the attack is “dubious” and the act of “cowards” meant to distract Palestinian unity and destroy efforts of reconciliation.

“This serves external agendas, which does neither serve our cause nor people,” Jima said.

Daouwd Shihab, spokesman of Islamic Jihad, also condemned the attack and said Gaza bombardment “only serves the enemy”.

“The timing of these explosions coincides with the calls for anger to support our Jerusalemites people and protecting Al-Aqsa mosque raises dangerous question marks,” Shihab said.

The attack has been condemned by Palestinian Resistance Committee, a group involved in fighting Israeli occupation, like Islamic Jihad and appear not interested in taking political or governmental positions.

“This is a criminal act,” the PRC said in a statement, calling on security forces in Gaza to chase the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Coca-Cola to open first factory in Gaza

Coca-Cola is planning to build it first factory in Gaza within a year, according to the chairman of the Ramallah-based National Beverage Company.

“We’ve been shipping to Gaza on a regular basis with the approval of the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli authorities,” said Palestinian businessman Zahi Khouri, speaking to The Jerusalem Post. “It made commercial sense to have a plant [in Gaza] so we could sell the product at a much a lower cost.”

Khouri said that he organised the venture with the approval of the Palestinian Authority and that any taxes paid by his organisation would go exclusively to the PA – therefore avoiding any issues with terror-finance laws.

“This is something that’s extremely important if we want to talk about peace and coexistence,” he said. “It’s about where business can contribute to peace – don’t talk to me about the word process, I mean actual peace – by creating jobs and facilitating the life of the private sector.”

Khouri said there will be two-phases to setting up Coca-Cola in Gaza.

  8. #3 It is a sad day when an amendment is needed to a state constitution to ensure that only US law is applied in US courts.
