A study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has shown that verapamil, a drug widely used to treat high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and migraine headaches, is able to completely reverse diabetes in animal models. The UAB team will now move onto clinical trials to see if the same results are repeated in humans.
Following years of research, the UAB researchers have shown that high blood sugar causes the body to overproduce a protein called TXNIP. Too much of this protein in specialized cells in the pancreas called beta cells contributes to the progression of diabetes by leading to the death of the cells and countering the body’s efforts to produce insulin.
The researchers found that verapamil can lower the levels of TXNIP in pancreatic beta cells to the point that the disease was eradicated in mouse models with established diabetes and blood sugar levels over 300 mg per deciliter. The team has also shown that verapamil reduces TXNIP levels in human islet beta cells, suggesting the same beneficial effects will carry over to humans.

Obama seeks USD 5.6B to fight Islamic State rebels
Congressional officials say they’re expecting a more than USD 5 billion administration request to pay for munitions and other military requirements to combat Islamic State militants who have seized control of large swaths of Iraq and Syria.
The USD 5.6 billion request was expected to be a top item on the agenda of today’s meeting between President Barack Obama and congressional leaders. Official details are expected to be delivered to Congress next week.
The funding comes on top of an earlier USD 58.6 billion request to cover overseas military operations to fight terror. It’s expected to be addressed in the upcoming post-election session of Congress.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the request is not yet official.

Obama authorizes 1,500 additional U.S. troops for deployment to Iraq
President Barack Obama on Friday authorized the U.S. military to deploy up to 1,500 additional troops to help train and advise Iraqi and Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State militants, the White House said.
The White House will ask Congress for $5.6 billion for the operations in Iraq and Syria, which includes $1.6 billion for the new “Iraq Train and Equip Fund,” the White House Office of Management and Budget said.

Libyan rebels threaten to declare independence over rival parliament
(Reuters) – Libyan rebels who have seized oil ports in the past to press their demand for regional autonomy said on Friday they would declare independence in the east if the world recognized a rival parliament, heightening tensions in the major oil producer.
The actions of rebel leader Ibrahim Jathran are closely watched by oil markets. He and his followers once seized four major oil ports in eastern Libya, accounting for 600,000 barrels of oil, and held them for almost a year.
Jathran signed a deal with the government in April to reopen the oil ports and toned down his rhetoric. But now he has ramped it up considerably – he is not known to have threatened to break Libya up into separate states
Libya is already effectively divided and turning into a security nightmare for its Arab neighbors and Western powers. Armed groups and Islamist militants who helped toppled Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 are fighting for power and a share of oil revenue.

“President Barack Obama has authorised US generals to more than double America’s troop deployment to Iraq in a significant escalation of the campaign against the Islamic State.
The Pentagon said Mr Obama had approved plans to send an additional 1,500 soldiers to Iraq on top of the 1,400 already deployed on a mission to train and support the country’s military.
The plan would mean nearly 3,000 US troops stationed in Iraq three years after the last soldiers withdrew in December 2011, in what was supposed to be the end of the war that began in 2003.
Although none of the Americans are being deployed in a combat role, the the expanded troop deployment is likely to raise cries of “mission creep” from sceptics of Mr Obama’s strategy for combating Isil.
The Pentagon said the US military would establish two bases outside of Baghdad and Erbil, the Kurdish capital, from which to support Iraqi and Kurdish fighters struggling against the jihadists.
The US will also set up training sites across the country to train nine Iraqi Army brigades and three brigades from the Peshmerga, the Kurdish fighting force….”

I have lost some of my oldest, best friends over my insistence that the religion of Islam actually teaches the kind of violence we see with ISIS, Boko Haram, Taliban etc, but not one of them will as much as crane their neck one inch to simply look at videos like this. They say, “You can find violent passages in any religious books. What about The Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem witch burnings – case closed.” I am in a constant state of alarm and frustration over it. It’s Mein Kampf all over again.

LONDON – UK – Four men arrested for allegedly plotting a terror attack to kill Queen Elizabeth
A SUSPECTED plot to kill the Queen at a Royal British Legion event ahead of Remembrance Day at the Royal Albert Hall has been foiled by police.
British tabloid The Sun reports four Islamic terror suspects are thought to have been planning a knife attack on Her Majesty, 88.
It is thought the alleged assassination plot on the Queen emerged during routine surveillance.
The Queen and British Prime Minister David Cameron were both informed of the police operation and potential threat, the Sun reports.
Heavily-armed counter terrorist police swooped on four addresses across west London and High Wycombe in the Thames Valley overnight and arrested the four men aged 19 to 27 years.
Another four addresses linked to the men were still being searched this morning.
Police were remaining tight-lipped about the plot but confirmed it was a planned Islamist attack on British soil.
The Metropolitan Police the arrests and searches were part of “ongoing investigation into Islamist-related terrorism”.
The suspects were all arrested and are being held in custody on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
The 19-year-old, understood to be called Yusuf, was arrested at an address in High Wycombe at the same time as a 22-year-old was arrested in Hounslow at 8.45pm.
A 25-year-old was arrested in Uxbridge at 2.55am this morning while a 27-year-old was arrested in a car in the street in Southall at 8.30pm yesterday.
The arrests came from intelligence gathered by M15.
There was speculation the timing of the arrests on the eve of Remembrance Day related to the potential the attacks were to be on military personnel taking part in the annual commemoration that is a large event in the UK.
It is understood police were suspecting a gun attack rather than bomb plot.

SAUDI ARABIA – Ambassadors leave Riyadh for Kaaba washing
A number of Muslim ambassadors based in the capital left for Makkah on Friday to take part in the ceremonial washing of the Kaaba on Saturday morning. Aside from the Muslim members of the diplomatic group, top Saudi officials including several ministers, Islamic scholars, Muslim diplomats, as well as citizens and visitors to the Grand Mosque are expected to attend the washing ceremony.
[…]The ceremonial washing of Kaaba is held following the example of prophet Muhammad , who washed it after entering it at the time of the conquest of Makkah. The sacred event takes place twice a year on the 15th of Shabaan (the month preceding the fasting month of Ramadan) and in mid-Muharram (the month after Dul Hijjah when Muslims perform Haj).
South African Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq Jaafar said he deemed it a great honor to participate in the washing of the Kaaba. “This is the fifth time I am fortunate enough to get this honor,” the envoy added.
Sri Lankan Senior Minister for Urban Affairs Abdul Hameed Mohamed Fowzie, who has come to Makkah on invitation from Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar, said it is a wonderful opportunity to take part in the ceremony. He thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his government for rendering a yeoman’s service to the Islamic Ummah through his magnanimity. Fowzie is also the chairman of the island’s Haj committee in Colombo.
Bangladesh Ambassador Mohammed Shahidul Islam said that he is going to participate in the ceremony for the ninth time consecutively. “I am really proud and happy that the Haj Ministry has given me this opportunity once more,” he added.
The washing ritual begins with the performance of two raka’hs of Nafl prayer inside the Kaaba. The interior walls are then cleaned with rose, oud and musk perfumes using white cloth. Zamzam water mixed with rose perfume is then splashed on the floor and wiped with bare hands and palm leaves.
Before entering the Kaaba to do the washing, the governor is slated to circle the Kaaba seven times (Tawaf) during which he will touch the Black Stone.
