Obviously not *everything* can be pinned on the Frankfurt School, there were and are other intellectual currents, and historical circumstances, like Nazism, the Holocaust and the end of Empire, made the way smooth for these ideas as well as starting them going or giving them momentum. And then so many of the most unsavory people have seized on the influence of the Frankfurt School, generally because a lot of the central figures were Jewish, as an explanation of What Went Wrong, that in some ways you would really rather leave it to them.
But unless this outsized, interconnected set of bad ideas suddenly appeared on its own out of nothing, it had to originate somewhere, and the tracks are traceable readily enough from the idiocy that now infests the liberal arts in universities and the political and media establishments, back through the 68ers and the New Left and their intellectual ‘father,’ Marcuse, and so to other thinkers connected directly or indirectly with the Frankfurt School, like Adorno, Horkheimer and Fromm.
Their ideas at least in part were a response to centuries of European anti-Semitism, culminating in the horrors of Nazi Germany; a long chapter on anti-Semitism is central to Horkheimer and Adorno’s 1944 ‘Dialect of Enlightenment.’ They weren’t looking for ways to change the culture out of sheer willfulness, or I haven’t seen that in what I’ve read. They thought things were profoundly wrong with European civilization, and that their version of Marxism, and their marriage of Marxism with psychoanalysis, held out the possibility, however slender, of setting them right.
But they were wrong about what was wrong, and their attack on the culture, grounded in Marxist notions of the malleability of human nature, and the desirability of entirely remaking family and society, has contributed to something they did not intend or foresee, university students so poorly raised and so badly miseducated that they think the cool thing to do is support the Islamic jihad against Israel.

Awarding Judith Butler the prize does seem like a backhanded slap at Adorno. And Jews. And Israel. Unintended, of course.
Apparently some members of the Frankfurt School returned to Germany after the war. It was during the Occupation, where they were encouraged to be fruitful and multiply. Almost revenge enough, I’d say.

Look at the Ford and Heinz foundations they were started by conservatives who were very anti-communist, the founders died and leftist went to work for the foundations. After a couple of decades the foundations support all left wing causes and refuse to fund or advertise for any conservative cause. The left has taken over anti-communist groups and are now using them against us.
