Islam awareness post 1 for Aug. 12 – 2014

1. Arson at German mosque

(Was it shiia? Sunni? Is this ‘internecine’?) Story here and more video of the fire dept. here

2. Woman in Bristol attacked by ‘Asian’ cabbie who took off

(Japanese and Korean organizations should be suing the BBC and UK media every time they use the term, Asian’)

3. Remembering Robin WIlliams

4.  Inventing Moderate Islam

‘Secularism can never enjoy a general acceptance in an Islamic society.” The writer was not one of those sulfurous Islamophobes decried by CAIR and the professional Left. Quite the opposite: It was Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual guide and a favorite of the Saudi royal family. He made this assertion in his book, How the Imported Solutions Disastrously Affected Our Ummah, an excerpt of which was published by the Saudi Gazette just a couple of months ago.

(The person who sent me this points out that: John Esposito, Georgetown’s apologist-in-chief, would call you an Islamophobe; but when Qaradawi says it, no problem — according to Esposito, he’s a “reformist.”)

5. Islamic State ‘now planning terror attacks on Asian soil’

Malaysia and Indonesia are warning of a fresh terror threat from Islamist militants who have joined the al-Qaeda offshoot that has seized territory in Iraq and Syria.

The appeal of Islamic State, whose gains in Iraq and brutality towards minorities have prompted air strikes from the US, has spread to Southeast Asia, where radicalised Muslims have been inspired by the group’s declaration of an Islamic caliphate.

6. Trojan Horse purge ‘threat to Christmas’: Independent schools and academies could be forced to drop celebrations under new rules to tackle extremists

They say 6,000 private schools will be compelled to adopt political correctness.

Following the Trojan Horse scandal, in which Birmingham schools came under the sway of Islamic extremists, the Education Department proposed that independent schools must ‘actively promote’ British values – said to include respect for legally ‘protected characteristics’.

Critics warn the rules will bring a series of unintended consequences, including preventing teachers from using words like husband or wife when discussing marriage; making teachers inflate the reputation of politicians in their lessons, and dictating the curriculum and exams schools must use.

Thank you Maria J., M., DP111,

  1. #2 Tenuous link to Muslims taking off in cars:

…”police arrested Mr Gray at 2am on December 9 last year, and he was held for ten hours before before being bailed on suspicion of failing to stop, racially aggravated public disorder and driving while unfit through drink.”

The taqiyya impressed me. And he didn’t go to prison for perverting the course of justice when persons exchanging seats avoiding a speeding fine, did. The dhimmis of Political Socialism just amaze when they take Islam as Race into account.

  2. Saudi Arabia tells Israel only peace deal can ensure its survival

Saudi Arabia told Israel on Tuesday that it must reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians if it is to survive as a nation, and criticised Muslims for being divided and failing to stop the Israelis attacking its Arab neighbours.

“Israel has to realize that peace is the only solution for its survival,” Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the world’s largest Muslim body, on the situation in the Gaza Strip.

“As we see, Israel does not shy away from taking its terror to any level, with total disregard to any laws, rules, religious edicts or humanitarian considerations to achieve its goals.

“Its only objective is to uproot the Palestinian existence wherever it is,” Prince Saud told the meeting in Jeddah, attended by Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah and ministers from the 56-member OIC.

Saudi Arabia, which regards itself as a leader of the Sunni Muslim world, has played only a background role in the diplomacy to end the fighting in Gaza, leaving its ally Egypt as the main Arab player pursuing a ceasefire – in its second day on Tuesday.

The kingdom’s policy towards Gaza is complicated by its mistrust of the territory’s ruling Hamas, an Islamist movement with close ideological and political links to the Muslim Brotherhood, which Riyadh regards as a terrorist organisation.

Saudi Arabia believes the Brotherhood has a region-wide agenda to seize power from established governments, including the al-Saud dynasty, and has quarrelled with Qatar over its support for the group.

Gaza hospital officials say 1,938 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched a military campaign on July 8. Israel has lost 64 soldiers and three civilians.

Efforts to negotiate a permanent peace deal have failed due to differences over the borders of a Palestinian state, the fate of Arab East Jerusalem and the future of displaced Palestinians and their descendents.

No Right To Self-Defence As Occupier

The veteran foreign minister also rejected Western backing of Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas rockets.

“Israel does not have a right of self-defence as an occupier. There is no rule under international law that says an occupier has a right of self-defence. For any country to take that position shows bad intentions towards the region and bad intentions towards peace in the region,” Prince Saud told a news conference after the OIC meeting.

“I don’t think it’s fair to equate the actions of Hamas and Israel, either in scale or in substance. How can you say that Israel has a right to defend itself when it is the occupier and you do not give the same right to Hamas?”

Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, say they are willing to make peace with Israel after it withdraws from all lands it occupied in the 1967 Middle east war. Hamas’ founding charter calls for the destruction of Israel, but its leaders have said in recent years it could live peacefully alongside Israel if Palestinians get back land they lost in 1967.

Prince Saud said the country’s development fund would “continue to abide by the kingdom’s commitments” by contributing $500 million for Gaza’s reconstruction.

Offering 300 million Saudi riyals ($80 million) for medical relief aid, Prince Saud also called for support for Egyptian efforts to end the fighting, saying Muslim divisions had allowed Israel to repeatedly launch wars against Muslims.

“Would it have been possible for Israel to carry out an aggression after another, had the Islamic nation been united?” Prince Saud said.

“What tempts Israel to commit its continuous crimes against the Palestinian people and Muslims as a whole is the weakness it sees in the Muslim nation due to fragmentation and divisions and the spread of sedition within it.”

  3. ‘British and Islamic values can go hand in hand’ says Dr Rowan Williams on visit to Lincolnshire

Dr Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, was a special guest at an event at the Lincolnshire Showground that saw thousands gather for four days of debate about Islam. He told the crowds at Living Islam that Muslims have brought back “open, honest and difficult public discussion” as one of their “greatest gifts” to the UK.

Twice in the last 12 months, protestors from the East Anglian Patriots have descended on the city because of their concerns over Islam’s place in Lincolnshire.

They have voiced fears over plans for a mosque on the site of the former Boultham Park dairy. The Boultham Residents’ Association told people to ignore the protestors – but the group feels it speaks for some.

Earlier this year, The Times reported on growing concerns over the emergence of Sharia courts in some Muslim communities. Tom Winsor, the Chief Inspector of Constabulary, said some minority communities were operating their own justice systems. And he said offences as serious as murder were going unreported to police.

But many would say that for ordinary Muslims, this is a world away from day-to-day life in Lincolnshire and elsewhere in the country.

At the Lincolnshire Showground, Lord Williams talked about British values and Islamic values and how the two are often reported as being at odds with each other.

Yet he blamed the media for much of this. “In Birmingham, we have seen a local parish and a mosque combining together to provide family services and youth activities,” Lord Williams said.

“It’s really important that we respect and try to understand diversity of conscience and belief and conviction.

“These are not just about what makes us British – they’re about what makes us human.”

He also criticised some sections of the media for portraying Muslims as “un-British”, and slammed the “illiteracy” about religion among Government figures.

Lord Williams said that he believed the most difficult thing facing British Muslims was the media’s emphasis on what made Muslims different.

He said: “There is a whole generation of British Muslims that unfortunately don’t make the headlines.”

Speaking to the Echo afterwards, Lord Williams said he was delighted to be back in Lincolnshire.

“I haven’t been since I was Archbishop of Canterbury,” he said. “It’s very interesting that Lincolnshire has been chosen to host this festival.

“I think that Lincoln Cathedral is one of the greatest treasures of Western Europe.

“I have seen that there’s an academy in Scunthorpe that Muslims and Christians study at, St Lawrence Academy, and it’s a brilliant example of integration between different religions in Lincolnshire.”

The event, which was organised by the Islamic Society of Britain, attracted between 4,500 to 5,000 visitors throughout the four days.

Dilwar Hussain, from the events team, said that the ambition of organisers behind the event, which started in 2003, was for British Muslims to get together.

“In the last few months, there has been intense pressure, with Muslims facing conflicts in Syria and Iraq – and lots of Muslims are feeling very powerless and depressed about it. What we say is – we can feel upset but we have to have a sense of optimism and hope.”

Shamima Hossain, 44, who had travelled to the event with family from Norwich, said she had enjoyed Lord Williams’ speech.

“I think he’s amazing,” she said. “As a Muslim, it’s really pleasing to hear a Christian be so encompassing of all faiths.”

Jeffery Beere, 49, from Oxford, said that there was always a great atmosphere at the event. “It’s just relaxing and enjoyable and there’s lots to see and do,” he said.
