3. BBC: Rocket attacks in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula kill eight

One rocket hit a crowded market place in the coastal city of el-Arish on Sunday night.

It seems Hamas has agreed to silence its rockets, the other militant factions like Islamic Jihad haven’t signed up yet.
It’s a feather in the cap for the Egyptian leader General Al-Sisi and how ironic, given his government’s pursuit of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas’s parent organisation, back home.
Israel will claim victory, but its definition of what a win looks like has been scaled back.An official told me today they’d be content with 18 months of calm. That’s what the last Gaza conflict back in 2012 won them.
The sad truth is that until the Israelis and the Palestinians find a way of resolving the underlining conflict this will not be more than a pause.
Here, every ceasefire is merely the start of the countdown to the next war.

RT – Egypt proposes ceasefire to Israel, Hamas
Egypt has launched an initiative to end the Israel-Gaza conflict by establishing a truce between the two sides which will start at 6 a.m. GMT on Tuesday. It will be followed by a 12-hour ceasefire, Egypt’s state news agency reported.
The truce is to be followed by negotiations in Cairo in 48 hours which will be attended by both sides, according to AFP. Following this, Cairo has proposed the opening of border crossings and negotiations on the solution of the crisis. The proposal was discussed in the framework of the Arab League meeting of foreign ministers on Monday.
Israel’s security cabinet will convene on Tuesday morning, two hours before the truce comes into force, to vote on the proposal, a senior minister told Haaretz. “This is a basic proposal that can be accepted as a starting point and after that further discussions on the specifics can be held,” the minister said.
In a televised address, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh praised the role of Hamas fighters and denounced the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Haniyeh confirmed that there are “talks” of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but gave no clear indication that a truce deal has been agreed with Tel Aviv, Middle East Eye reports.
“The problem is not the truce, but the siege and starvation of Gaza Strip,” Haniyeh stressed.
At the same time, a rocket from neighboring Lebanon has been fired on Israeli territory. There have been no reports of casualties.

Hamas rejects Egypt’s proposed ceasefire in Gaza as ‘surrender’
GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories (AFP) – The armed wing of Hamas on Tuesday rejected an Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, threatening to “intensify” its conflict with Israel if truce terms were unsatisfactory.
“No official or unofficial side has approached us about the ceasefire talked about in the media… (but) if the contents of this proposal are true, it is a surrender and we reject it outright,” the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement.
“Our battle with the enemy will intensify.”

Qassam Brigades says the initiative does not equal the value of the ink with which it was written
GAZA CITY – Qassam Brigades, the military arm of the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, early on Tuesday turned down an Egyptian initiative for bringing about ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The brigades described the initiative as one of “submission”.
“We totally reject it [the ceasefire initiative],” the brigades said in a statement.
“For us, this initiative does not equal the value of the ink with which it was written,” it added.
A few hours earlier, Egypt proposed an initiative for imposing a ceasefire between Gaza-based resistance factions, on one hand, and Israel, on the other.
The initiative calls on Israel to cease all hostilities in the Gaza Strip, halt any ground operations, and stop targeting civilians, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
It also calls on Gaza-based Palestinian factions to cease all hostilities against Israel, halt rocket fire and cross-border attacks and stop targeting civilians.
The Egyptian initiative also calls for reopening Gaza crossings and facilitating the movement of persons and goods through borders.
Qassam Brigades said, however, that it would maintain its battle against Israel and will even step up this battle.
“We will be loyal to the blood of our innocent martyrs,” the brigades said in the statement.
“We promise our people that this blood will not go in vain,” it added.
Tension has been running high in the Palestinian territories since Israel launched a deadly offensive on Gaza last Monday with the stated aim of halting rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave.
At least 187 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1300 others injured in unrelenting Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip since the operation began last Monday.
Gaza-based resistance factions, for their part, have continued to fire rockets at Israeli cities in response to the ongoing Israeli attacks.
No Israeli fatalities have been reported thus far.

About 1,000 people marched through the city of Kahramanmara? in southern Turkey on Sunday, demanding that Syrian refugees in the city center be sent back, which some see as evidence of increasing tension between locals and the Syrians who have fled their war-torn country.
During Monday’s events, one police officer and two protesters were injured when riot police intervened to disperse the crowd. Kahramanmara?
