  1. Yemen official: 12 suspected al Qaeda members killed in ‘open warfare’ (CNN, May 1, 2014)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/05/01/world/meast/yemen-al-qaeda/index.html

“Twelve suspected al Qaeda militants were killed Thursday, said a high-level Yemeni government official who is being briefed on his nation’s ongoing counterterrorism operations.

The official characterized the operation as “open warfare between the Yemeni military and al Qaeda.”

“It’s a very tough fight,” said the official. “So far, dozens of Yemeni soldiers have been killed or wounded and dozens of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) members have been killed or wounded.”

This is all part of a crackdown resulting in the deaths of more than 60 suspected al Qaeda militants in Yemen from April 19 to 21, Yemeni officials have said.

Operations have included attacks by Yemeni commandos and suspected U.S. drone strikes, according to a Yemeni official.

The high-level Yemeni government official said Thursday that “decisive battles” are ongoing, with troops “conducting ground operations still in the toughest areas.” He called the operation “unprecedented.””

“At least nine Libyan soldiers were killed in fighting between government forces and Islamist militants in Benghazi on Friday, officials said.

The fighting began when members of the Islamist armed group Ansar al Sharia and other “criminal groups” attacked the headquarters of the Benghazi security directorate early Friday, the Libyan interim government said in a statement.

Health officials said 19 soldiers and policemen were wounded, and some of the attackers were also killed, wounded or taken captive, according to the government.

Residents and activists reported explosions and intense gunfire that lasted about an hour at dawn before army special forces troops took control of the area. The government said the attackers used small, medium and heavy weapons in their assault…”

  3. MAY 02 2014 – 38 killed in building fire in Ukraine’s Odessa

Ukraine’s interior ministry has said 40 people died when a trade union building was set on fire in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa.

Police said 38 people had choked to death on smoke or were killed when jumping out of windows after the trade union building was set on fire.

Regional police said the trade union building was set on fire in some of the worst violence in the largely Russian-speaking Black Sea city since former president Viktor Yanukovych was ousted in February.

Four men died in running battles between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian activists with petrol bombs, paving stones and explosive devices being thrown during the clashes.

Hundreds of separatists attacked a rally of around 1,500 people demonstrating for national unity.

A local politician told Ukrainian television that at least six young supporters of the authorities in Kiev had been killed in the fighting, but this figure has not been confirmed by police.

Two soldiers have also been killed in renewed clashes with pro-Russian rebels in the eastern city of Slaviansk according to the Ukrainian defence ministry.

“A group of armed extremists attacked Ukrainian soldiers of the 95th Paratroop Brigade…Intense combat ensued. Two Ukrainian soldiers are dead,” the ministry said in a statement.

Seven people were killed in the city earlier today, including two Ukrainian servicemen who died when two military helicopter were shot down by pro-Russia rebels.

Three separatists and two civilians were killed in a military offensive in the city.

Acting president Oleksander Turchynov said Ukrainian border troops had rebuffed attempts by Russian “armed saboteurs” to cross into Ukraine overnight.

He also said that he operation to retake Slaviansk had not progressed as quickly as he hoped, complicated by pro-Russian rebels hiding “behind the citizens” and “firing from apartment blocks”.

Russia called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council today to discuss the “serious escalation of violence in Ukraine.”

  6. MERS coronavirus can be transmitted from camel to humans (SD, May 2, 2014)
    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/05/140502081339.htm

“The so-called Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus was first found in June 2012 in a patient from Saudi Arabia, who suffered from severe pneumonia. Since this time more than 300 persons have developed an infection, of whom about a third died. The fact that the Arabian camel is the origin of the infectious disease has been confirmed recently. The transmission pathways of the viruses, however, have not been clear until now.

Virologists Norbert Nowotny and Jolanta Kolodziejek from the Institute of Virology are investigating the transmission pathways of the MERS coronavirus. They found that viruses from infected humans and Arabian camels from the same geographical region have nearly identical RNA sequences. “This indicates transmission between animals and man. The process is referred to as zoonosis. With this knowledge we can specifically react to the spread of the virus. Vaccinations of camels are currently being discussed. We will thus be able to halt the spread of the virus,” said Nowotny….”

  7. MERS makes first U.S. appearance, in Indiana (CNN, May 2, 2014)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/05/02/health/indiana-mers/index.html

“The first U.S. case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus has been reported in Indiana, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

The patient is a health-care provider who recently traveled to Saudi Arabia to provide health care, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, assistant surgeon general with the U.S. Public Health Service and director for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

The person, an American male, traveled on April 24 from Riyadh to London, then to Chicago, and took a bus to Indiana, officials said. He began experiencing shortness of breath, coughing, and fever on April 27, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

The patient was admitted to Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana, on April 28, the same day he visited the emergency department there, the health department said. He has been isolated and is in stable condition. He is receiving oxygen support, but does not require a ventilator, Schuchat said.

The virus poses a “very low risk to the broader general public,” Schuchat said, as it has not been shown to spread easily from person to person.

The CDC and the Indiana State Department of Health are conducting a joint investigation into the case, according to a CDC statement. The CDC confirmed Indiana test results on Friday…”

  8. True, it’s not wildly infectious. Just don’t lap-up his urine.
The virus can hang out in his semen for considerably longer than symptoms of his illness. So keep your children & pets away from the patient for at least a couple weeks after he returns from hospital. (Some say up to 7 weeks.)

  9. There’s is another snowfall warning from the Weather-Network for the area, and I may end up being stuck in the bush……..break out the snowshoes.

  10. Don,
I just love the word, “Moham-” & especially “Mohoundianism” (the latter may be from Wrath).

  11. @Yucki,

No insult intended……..but I think the civilized world need to become extremely active, needs to past thinking we are injuring Muslims and retarding the onslaught of Islam by making a mockery of their names…..this is the sport of children in playgrounds and in no way moves our fight ahead.

We need to put aside silliness, to put aside word games like “”Moosslim” and “Mudslime” and “Mo-HAM-head”……all of this is childish…..we need to get serious and we need to get active.

We need to stop thinking that participation on blog comment rolls has a real effect, the fact that blog commentary gives the commenter a sense of participation, it gives the illusion of fighting back and of having an impact, but the reality is that blog commentary has a limit and we have reached that limit, we need to understand that silence is death, that silence is a luxury we cannot afford.

So, for all those who spend time commenting, there are better and certainly more productive ways to bring the fight to the Muslim and drop it in its lap.

    Start exploring those ways.
