As far as Islam is concerned, anyone denying Islam, or refusing to accommodate it, is attacking Islam. Therefore, they can then ‘defend’ it. The attack on the Twin Towers was a defensive action, not an attack. The Boston bomb was a defensive action. And this is exactly what the maniac at the end is talking about.
