So let me get this straight. If the US were to bomb the Iranian nuclear program out of existence, nobody would mind? I wouldn’t mind…would you mind? The birth place of Mohammed is down with it. Egyptians are cool. I wonder how the Sunni Muslim Osama bin Laden feels about that? I bet he wouldn’t even mind. OK, so Hamas wouldn’t like it very much, and maybe the Taliban and Hezbollah would object on principle. But the Mullahs are digging in fast and making it impossible to uproot the facilities without killing huge numbers of civilians in the process, so chop, chop! This would be that rare case where the absolute right thing to do would be for the USS George H Bush to go ahead and blow the crap out of their nuclear ambitions. If Barrack Obama really were a Manchurian Candidate, this “mistake” he is about to make could very well be the purpose he was put in place to serve. History could pivot on this point. For the US President to fail to act, and fail he will, at this important juncture, will probably go down in history as one of the great lost opportunities of all time – kind of like not shooting Hitler in 1938. If the Iranians get nuclear weapons and a nuclear arms build-up in the Middle East is begun, this will be Barry’s legacy. But, alas this is a moment for Ronald Reagan and he is nowhere in sight.
Thank you Chris. Excellent comment.
What we have here is a major problem, Iran has spread its nuclear research and development over such a large number of stations and hardened them to the point where right now Israel doesn’t have the military assets to slow down the program more then a couple of months, if that long. What would be necessary is a 1 to 2 month long 24/7 bombing campaign with the first week to week and a half dedicated to destroying the Iranian military. After that we would have to pound the research stations that we know about until we have holes in the ground that are in a couple of cases over 1000 foot deep. I am not sure that campaign would do more then delay the program for a couple of years because even then we wouldn’t know that we had destroyed all of the sites and taken out all of the scientists.
Having said that I don’t know if we have any realistic option to military force, but if we start bombing, we need to carry on with an invasion and regime change. Only this time we should call it a conquest and occupy the nation instead of calling it a liberation and nation building.
What will we do, probably set on our thumbs and do nothing until after Iran nukes Israel and possibly one or more locations that are vital to the US, either in or outside the US.
