Translation of French text: 

THE “RED CRESCENT OF IRAQ” calls upon the international community to intervene and save Christian women, sold in the Souks of Mossoul by ISIS 

ISIS (*) jihadists now impose their laws from another time in the zones they occupy in the centre of Northern Iraq, namely Mossoul. All communities are abused, and especially Christians.

The latter, who have lived in this region for 2000 years are today stripped of their possession and chased out of their homes. Those who resist are directly executed.

The women are led like cattle to the market and auctioned off like the slaves in other times.

ISIS/ISIL/IS once again ‘essentializes [Middle Eastern] societies as static and undeveloped—thereby fabricating a view of Oriental culture that can be studied, depicted, and reproduced’ (Wikipedia). That’s a high crime in the academy. ‘Implicit in this fabrication,’ wrote Edward Said, ‘is the idea that Western society is developed, rational, flexible, and superior,’ and everyone knows that isn’t true.

    And all those Orientalist paintings of slave markets had no basis in history, but were just projections onto the Other of the repressed and sex-crazed Western imagination.

Spoken like a true “public Intellectual”, condescendingly to those whom he accuses of condescension to the “Noble savages”, while probably indulging in a little onanism watching the erotic projection onto “the other”. hmmmmmpppfffff.       But I must say, I was deeply disturbed by that photo (of how it is now), saw it a few days ago and cannot get it out of my mind. While the paintings of white sex slaves had even a certain sensuality about them, by their distance in time a rather “safe” sensuality – the picture from Mossoul brings it soooo close – jeans, sunglasses and all that…quite frightening. …..hmmm….

        • I thought that was, (young boys with) “Skin as white as pearls”. Just another one of the many facts about Islam that we’re simply not allowed to talk about. The Muslim Paradise supplies young boys along with the 72 virgins, but you’re not supposed to say that out loud or you are guilty of, “Insulting Islam”, and must be killed at once…

          When will people get it through their heads that Islam is 100% pure evil. There is no good in Islam, it is like Nazi-ism – all bad, and the deeper you look, the worse it gets…

        Said’s footnote for this contention refers the reader to an essay by Linda Nochlin called “The Imaginary Orient” in Art in America (May 1983).

        In a 2010 essay in the New English Review, Ibn Warraq remarks, ‘Nowadays when discussing Orientalist art, one often begins with Linda Nochlin’s article “The Imaginary Orient,” a work obviously influenced by Said’s Orientalism.’ (Starts to look a bit circular.)

        Ibn Warraq goes on, ‘Nochlin’s article can hardly be called art criticism. It is purely polemic, and, at times, quite hysterical. For her, the important element in any analysis of such art must be “the particular power structure in which these works came into being…” Nochlin assumes that the Orientalist artist must in every case be a symbol of the prevailing political reality, in other words, in the grip of blind historical forces against which he is helpless, that he must have an imperialistic agenda, and must be a racist…. For her, he represents the Occident, out to rape the submissive and backward Orient.’

        Nochlin on that painting by Jean-Leon Gerome that graces the cover of Said’s Orientalism, which she calls ‘a visual document of nineteenth-century colonialist ideology:’

        ‘the watchers huddled against the ferociously detailed tiled wall in the background of Gérôme’s painting are resolutely alienated from us, as is the act they watch with such childish, trancelike concentration. Our gaze is meant to include both the spectacle and its spectators as objects of picturesque delectation…. Clearly, these black and brown folk are mystified—but then again, so are we…. the insistent, sexually charged mystery at the center of this painting signifies a more general one: the mystery of the East itself, a standard topos of the Orientalist ideology.’

Nochlin continues: ‘If for painters like Gerome the Near East existed as an actual place to be mystified with effects of realness’ (What?) ‘for other artists it existed as a project of the imagination, a fantasy space or screen onto which strong desires – erotic, sadistic, or both – could be projected with impunity…. contemporary Frenchmen’s power over women…. the artist’s sadistic fantasies under the guise of Orientalism…’

    • Ah Don, you’ve brought us to Edward Said.

      Said’s “Orientalism” is not faring well these days. He’s been debunked, the old fraud. Sure, the academy is still clotted with his progeny, but today’s strongest Mideast commentators have turned 180 degrees. Events in the region have simply demolished his hard-left, “Critical Theory”-driven, ideology as history nonsense.

      Those who’ve addressed the subject directly regret having been sucked into Arafat-glamorizing, Soviet-funded terrorist chic. Said poisoned a whole generation; substantive scholars of the Bernard Lewis calibre no longer served as models. Serious scholarship has declined markedly, just when we need it most.

      Off the top of my head the best description of this trend is in Lee Smith’s The Strong Horse, a book that came out in time for Christmas gift-giving last year. You’re sure to find reviews at Amazon that’ll give you the gist.

        I hope things have begun changing for the better in Middle Eastern Studies, and the PC nonsense about Islam from the universities we find everywhere on the internet doesn’t tell the whole story.

  4. ISIL Kills At Least 500 Yazidis, Burying Some Alive Says Iraq Minister

    At least 500 members of Iraq’s Yazidi minority in northern Iraq have been been killed by ISIL, including some who have been buried alive, an Iraqi government minister said on Sunday.

    According to Iraq’s human rights minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, ISIL militants have buried hundreds of Yazidis in mass graves, as well as some women and children who were still alive. He also said about 300 Yazidi women had been forced into slavery.

    “We have striking evidence obtained from Yazidis fleeing Sinjar and some who escaped death, and also crime scene images that show indisputably that the gangs of the Islamic States have executed at least 500 Yazidis after seizing Sinjar,” Sudani told Reuters. “Some of the victims, including women and children were buried alive in scattered mass graves in and around Sinjar.”
