This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

Yunice Abbas’ wife glared at him. “This has you written all over it,” she grumbled.
She was right. The 62-year-old had dabbled in crime his whole life, from petty offences to bank heists.
The Kardashian robbery, he later wrote in a memoir, was going to be his last job before retirement.
But a series of blunders meant the heist was doomed from the start and in early 2017 – three months after the robbery – Abbas and several of his alleged accomplices were arrested.
Ten of them will now be appearing in court in Paris in a trial set to last just under three weeks.

Abbas and a 68-year-old man, Aomar Ait Khedache, have confessed; the others have not.
One has since passed away, and another, aged 81, will be excused as he is suffering from advanced dementia.
By the time the trial starts, almost nine years will have gone by since the heist.

But while mistakes were made in terms of Kardashian’s security, serious errors were made on the burglars’ side, too.
“They didn’t take into account the progress made by police techniques, which can now find micro traces of DNA anywhere,” said Patricia Tourancheau, a crime reporter and the author of “Kim and the Grandpa Robbers” – a thorough account of the heist and of the lives of its perpetrators.
“When they dressed up as police they thought ‘that’s it, nobody will be able to recognise us’,” she adds.
But in 2016 Paris was still reeling from the terrorist attacks of the previous year, and there were a huge number of CCTV cameras all round the city, meaning police were able to spot the thieves and see them make off with the jewels.
Other details of this story suggest that the thieves’ planning was rather haphazard. When fleeing the scene on a bike, Abbas fell, dropping a bag of jewels.
The next day, a passer-by found a diamond-encrusted necklace and wore it all day at the office before watching the news and realising where it had come from.
Police arrested Abbas and several other people in January 2017 and later confirmed that they had been under surveillance for several weeks, after DNA traces left at the scene provided a match with Aomar Ait Khedache, also known as “Omar the Old”.

But how did the gang know that on the night of 2 October Kardashian would be alone in her room, without her security guard?
The documents indicate police believe Gary Madar, whose brother Michael’s firm had provided transportation and taxis to the Kardashians for years, was an accessory to the heist and that he had fed information to the gang about Kim’s whereabouts.

Patricia Tourancheau, the author of the book about the heist, said she was “fascinated” by the “clash between these old-style burglars from the Parisian banlieue and this global social media star”.
“They fled on bikes and she flies around on private jets,” she laughed.
“These are a group of elderly down-and-out thieves, they’re always broke, they’re forever involved in convoluted plans… and they’re facing a huge celebrity and they don’t even know who she is.”
The gang was not “elite” as it was suggested in the early days, she added.
“This isn’t the creme de la creme of French banditry. They’re a bit of a bunch of losers, really. They’re the same kind of people who in the 60s and 70s would burglar banks or post offices and who then rebranded to drug trafficking and then moved on to jewels because it was easier,” she said.

In his memoir, Abbas expressed the hope the victim’s status and the global resonance of the case would not influence judges unduly.

“These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered. We are living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will he held accountable. There will be detailed briefing on OPERATION SINDOOR, later today.”
The Delhi source comments: “Modi’s response has been very measured and it satisfies public opinion. It demonstrates Indians can hit any target inside Pakistan at will. In anticipation of Pakistani retaliation, the government has announced blackouts and safety drills for today. If Pakistan hits back, the second strike will be massive, and hopefully that will be that.”

Note that Carney spoke only in English, and omitted to speak also in French, as he did while campaigning in Canada where French is the second official language. When France’s President Emmanual Macron was in the Oval Office to meet Trump in February, he spoke in French and in English.

RFK Jr. Calls Out King Abdullah: Jordan Not Fulfilling a Pledge to Take 2,000 Sick Gaza Children
It’s a rare moment today in American politics that Donald Trump’s West Wing, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi are on the same side of an issue. And it’s rarer still that each of these parties is irritated at the same person.
Yet as Jordan’s King Abdullah II returns to Washington on Monday, top Trump aides, Kennedy, and Pelosi are venting their frustration with one of the Middle East’s longest-serving monarchs.
At issue: the commitment Abdullah made in February sitting by Trump’s side in the Oval Office to accept 2,000 children from Gaza with cancer and other grave illnesses.
Abdullah, say multiple high-ranking officials in both parties, is slow-walking his pledge, and Jordan has only accepted a fraction of sick children because of fears Israel will not let them and their families return to Gaza after treatment.

‘Eagles of Civilization 2025’ the joint Egypt-China air force drill and its significance – analysis
This is important, firstly, because it is a statement that China is making more military inroads in the region. Second, Egypt is a neighbor of Israel and also a US ally.
…What was more symbolic was a flyover by Chinese warplanes over the pyramids. This is being seen as another example of eroding US influence.
Beijing has already made inroads elsewhere in the region. It has been doing a lot of outreach to the Gulf, and the economic bloc, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, has brought China closer to Saudi Arabia.
BRICS, an economic bloc bringing together Russia, China, India, and other countries, has also been involved in the region. China is now a partner of Iran, and Beijing, Tehran, and Moscow have conducted joint naval drills.
China sees this as “a signal of deepening military ties and shifting alliances,” Reuters noted…. [vs. isolationist noise from White House apparatchiks, blah, blah…]
What the Egyptian Media is saying…
“For decades, Egypt has been told what weapons it may possess, how it may defend itself, and what threats it should prioritize – all dictated by Washington’s rigid commitment to maintaining Israel’s military supremacy…
“Last week’s historic drills with China were not just military exercises; they were a declaration of sovereignty: Egypt will no longer accept being a second-tier ally in its own region.”
An op-ed like this in an Egyptian publication would likely only appear if it reflects the views of the government to some extent. Therefore, it is obvious that Cairo is moving away from the West or, at least, hedging its bets. The country has also done more outreach to Iran recently.
Egypt is in an interesting position. It didn’t prevent the October 7 attack, and in the wake of the attack, Cairo has not been very critical of Hamas. Nevertheless, its role in the hostage talks is seen as important… Egypt’s agenda is unclear. It doesn’t want Gazans moving in or Sinai destabilized. But weapons smuggling from Sinai to Israel with drones is increasing.
There are also key questions about what Cairo knew before October 7 and how Hamas received so many weapons. It is possible that Egypt looked the other way regarding Hamas’s threats as part of Cairo’s reconciliation with Ankara and Doha.
ya think?!In essence, Qatar and Turkey accepted Egypt suppressing the Muslim Brotherhood at home as long as it purposely didn’t notice what Hamas was up to. Cairo has long-term interests in Gaza; therefore, preventing the destructive war of October 7 should have been a priority.
Egypt has not gotten involved in the Houthi issue, preferring to let the US sort things out in the Red Sea. However, it is involved in neighboring Sudan, embroiled in a deadly civil war.
Thus, Cairo can see it is ringed with conflict. Working with China is thus a logical turn for Egypt. This may raise eyebrows in Washington and Jerusalem, and Iran will be watching closely. It is in Iran’s interests to see China balance the US role in the region.
