Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. At first no one noticed him.

    He stood on that wide sidewalk on Wellington Street. Passersby ignored him as they did every other weirdo sign holder standing in front of the Canadian Parliament. Abortionists, anti-abortionists, native rights, Free Palestine, Pro-Israel, save the bees, save the planet–you name it and you would find the protester for the cause on any given day. You even found Freedom Convoy junkies left over from that historic event. Somehow they never went home.

    “I like your sign,” came the voice. At first he didn’t hear it. His mind had drifted up into the stunning Saturday morning blue sky. He was three hours already on his spot.

    “Pardon?”
    “Your sign. I. Like it very much.”
    “Oh, thank you. I’m glad.”
    “Can I ask you what kind of reaction you get from people?” The man asking the question was a journalist, photographer and blogger.
    “Well, I don’t incite neutrality,” he started with a smirk. The man was older than middle age but not yet old.
    “–Sorry I forgot to ask your name. Sorry to interrupt.”
    “My name is Harry Flemig.”
    “Your sign says, Make Canada the 51st State! That’s pretty, pretty, uh, what’s the word I’m looking for–.”
    “Bold?”
    “Exactly. Bold. How are you received?”
    “I get spat on. Many people use foul language to express themselves. Others try to pull my sign away. Some simply glance and shake their heads in passing. If I’m lucky they stop to berate me, which gives me an opportunity to explain myself.”
    “Are there no positive responses?”
    “Oh, there are. In fact you would be surprised at how many.”

    The journalist listened intently, even microscopically as Harry Flemig spoke. He had learned to do this over many years speaking with hundreds of people. He listened to every lilt and cadence in the voice, seeking signs of imbalance, extremism or lunacy that so often inflicted street protesters. He had been fooled before by investing in people who presented as normal but were not. Now his ears were finely honed–not perfect, mind you–but pretty darned good. “What do you tell those who stop to talk?”

    “Well, first of all they’re surprised when I tell them I’m a patriotic Canadian. It’s become fairly predictable, actually. Impossible, they reply. So I go on to explain.”

    The journalist heard no alarm bells, yet. Harry Flemig looked like a father of three out of suburbia. The only distinction in this regard was that there was no beer belly or sign of bureaucratic ease. No, this Harry Flemig was a fit and straight and serious man. He was not so intense as to be off-putting in any way, but conveyed instead a relaxed, confident sense of assuredness. He was tight but not tightly wound. “Please go on, then, and explain.”

    “Simply put, it is the patriot’s duty to criticize his government and his country. This is wisdom from James Joyce.”
    “But people will respond that you’re not merely criticizing your country, but calling for its end.”
    “Correct! And my response to that is that the end has already occurred. And what I am calling for is a route back to what we stood for when we were a great nation. When we were freer and less socialist than even the United States. Do you know that in the 1950s we were even richer on a per capita basis than our American friends?”
    “I did not know that.”
    “Right. Most people don’t. So it is that I explain the only path back to the Canada we were is under the American umbrella, so to speak. The counter-revolution we are witnessing under President Trump has made this a possibility. Otherwise, at our late stage of Chinese-propelled takeover, this country is already lost.”
    “Wow. You ARE a lightning rod.”
    “I’m afraid so. But I knew this would be the case, which is why I’m here.”

    Just then an old lady passed by and dropped a dollar into the bucket sitting at Harry’s feet. On the bucket was printed the same slogan written on his sign. “Thank you,” said Harry.

    “What’s the money for?”
    “I want to start a new political party.”
    “Based on what platform?”
    “On this,” replied Harry, bobbing his sign slightly.
    “And on what else?”
    “Nothing. Isn’t this enough?” he answered with a chuckle.
    “You’ve got a point there,” said the journalist. “But you’ve got me thinking–.”
    “–Good–.”
    “We hear conservatives in this country reacting to Trump’s 51st state stuff with sort of confused hostility.”
    “Precisely! How well put! They don’t know what to make of it all. On the one hand they think they are obliged to oppose any suggestion that we as a nation become, somehow, subordinated by annexation. On the other hand a little voice says it’s the right thing. Once I explain to them a few facts, though, they cannot un-see the clarity. It’s one of those situations where people only have to hear someone else say the words that congeal the notions in their head. It is academic after that.”

    “I’m sorry. I don’t quite get it. What can you say to conservatives that would possibly get them to agree with you?”

    Harry Flemig paused to put his sign down, leaning it against his body as he pulled a water bottle from his pocket and drank. Another man passed by dropping a coin into the bucket.

    “How much do you make on an average day?” The journalist asked.
    “Oh, three, maybe four-hundred dollars.”

    The journalist was shocked. “You’re not serious.”
    “Yes. And that is without saying a word.”
    “OK, so back to what you say to conservatives.”
    “It’s very simple. Basically, I know that about twenty percent of the population is close to being with me already.”
    “How on Earth can you possibly know this?”
    “Because this is approximately the demographic that didn’t take the Covid injections.”
    “Well, alright, go on.”
    “Twenty-plus percent of the population already sees and agrees with the state of communism in Canada. Once I point out how important Canada is to the United States with its economic needs, they start to see what I see. Twenty percent plus is more than the NDP polls. Besides, there’s not much point to a pantry without a kitchen. ”
    “There’s the Chinese kitchen.”
    “Not an option.”
    “Agreed. And what else do you see?”
    “I see it’s time to make a deal. This this is already academic. Inevitable. You cannot put it back in the bag. Want more clichés?”
    “A deal with Trump? The King of the deal?”
    “Exactly.”
    “What kind of deal?”
    “A sweetheart deal, that’s what kind. A deal of semi-autonomy, but with all the freedom, prosperity and protections written into the U.S. Constitution. A deal that makes Trump wonder what hit him– something he will respect us for. We would get the best of all worlds while recovering the country we once had, only under a different flag. It’s a small price to pay. And he gets what America needs, which is the one asset available within arm’s reach that makes it solvent, and provides all the raw materials it needs to repatriate its industrial base. Basically we can write our own ticket under the circumstances.”

    The journalist thanked Harry Flemig for his time and walked on. Before leaving he took a photograph for his blog. Harry thanked him graciously. The journalist tried to think about everything that was wrong with what Harry had said. He was brave, but if he got any kind of traction they would tear him apart. He represented everything that complacent, stupid Canadians didn’t like. Yes, he would be a lightning rod and yes, once you saw what he saw you could not un-see it.

  10. Canadian church butchers the Lord’s Prayer

    Protestia recently shared a video from St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Essex, Ontario, where they apparently employ an updated, LGBTQ version of the Lord’s Prayer. It starts out with a matronly looking person, albeit one possessing a shockingly baritone voice, referencing “Our mother and our father, our beloved parent …” and somehow gets worse from there.     On February 10, 2025, Pope Francis, who resides in the Vatican, a city-state surrounded by a formidable 39-foot wall, penned a letter to U.S. bishops, decrying what he describes as harsh immigration policies of President Donald Trump.

    In his sanctimonious letter, Pope Francis calls on the bishops to defend the “infinite and transcendent dignity of every human person” amidst what he terms a “major crisis” with “mass deportations.”

    Outspoken Catholic leader Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has responde to the letter and called out Red Francis main concern is not about immigrants, but about losing the steady flow of American tax dollars into the Church’s coffers for immigrant “services.”

    The recent exposure of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) funding of a myriad of NGOs shows just how much money is being siphoned from American taxpayers to enrich globalist causes.

    According to Forbes, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) was the top recipient of funding from the USAID.

    Per Forbes:

    CRS, a nonprofit, received $4.6 billion from 2013 to 2022. Other top recipients include Chemonics International, a for-profit organization that received $4.5 billion; FHI 360, a nonprofit that received $3.8 billion; and Development Alternatives, a for-profit organization that received $3 billion.

    Jorge Bergoglio’s letter to the Bishops of the United States is the most obvious admission of the effectiveness of the measures adopted by the Trump Administration to counter the operation of ethnic substitution desired by the globalist elite through mass “immigration” from the Third World.

    Bergoglio cannot allow the exorbitant flow of public money paid to the USCCB and to “Catholic” foundations and NGOs to be interrupted – starting with the American Jesuits’ JRS – and used, not to promote works of authentic Christian charity, but rather in support of the globalist plan for social dissolution.

    For this reason, he seeks to give a doctrinal basis to the indiscriminate “welcoming” of illegal immigrants, even inappropriately invoking the Magisterium of Pope Pius XII.

    The words of the Argentine Jesuit contradict themselves. If they were true and disinterested, we should have heard them much earlier, when the Biden Administration took away the wages of American citizens who did not submit to the inoculation of the so-called vaccine.

    In that case, concern for the “infinite dignity of all” yielded to the diktats of the same subversive elites who planned the ethnic substitution; the same group of elites who use taxpayers’ money to fund the Vatican, the USCCB, the ultra-progressive Jesuits who support the woke Left, and the entire constellation of “charitable” organizations and NGOs.

    Where were Bergoglio and the American Episcopate when Biden supported abortion right up to the moment of birth? Why did they not defend the “infinite dignity” of the innocent and defenseless creatures who are aborted?

    Why did they remain silent about the criminal trafficking of violated minors, forced into prostitution, fed to the pedophile elite, and sold to the market of organ predation? Perhaps because the commitment not to talk about abortion and sexual morality is part of the programmatic points of the emails of Hillary Clinton’s advisor, John Podesta, along with the promotion of LGBTQ+ perversions, ecological madness, and ethnic substitution?

    In the parable of the Good Samaritan, the man who is robbed by bandits and left for dead could today be an American robbed by an illegal immigrant, or a veteran beaten by a gang of teenagers.

    Bergoglio does not stop to help him, because he is too busy obeying his masters. The one who stops to treat him, who takes him to the inn at his own expense (and not with taxpayer money), is not a Jesuit NGO or a progressive charity funded by USAID, but rather the Samaritan whom the new doctors of the Law consider a heretic, and who today wears a red hat with the writing MAGA.

    Eight inspectors general fired by Trump are now suing to get their jobs back and the case was assigned to an Obama judge.

    President Trump last month fired over a dozen inspectors general in a late night purge shortly after he was sworn into office.

    Real Clear Politics reporter Susan Crabtree explained that many of these IGs, who are in a position to identify and clean up waste and abuse, have long histories of whitewashing reports and playing politics.

    President Trump kept current Department of Homeland Security Inspector General Joseph V. Cuffari Jr., who is conducting multiple investigations into the Secret Service failures that led to two assassination attempts on President Trump’s life.

    Trump also kept IG Michael Horowitz, who has a record of whitewashing reports and excusing criminal acts by far-left officials.

    On Wednesday, 8 inspector generals sued to get their jobs back and argued Trump violated a questionable law passed by Congress in 2022.

    The law requires a US president notify Congress 30 days before firing an inspector general and to explain in detail the reason for the termination.

    The lawsuit was assigned to Judge Randolph Moss, an Obama appointee.

    Disney is the latest major company to pivot away from wokeness.

    Though the entertainment conglomerate will not get rid of the initiatives entirely, the shift shows that not even the House of Mouse is immune from the collapse of the diversity, equity, and inclusion movement that we have seen in recent months.

    Sonia Coleman, the chief human resources officer for Disney, wrote in a Tuesday memo to employees that various practices at the company would be reoriented to focus on talent rather than outward identity, according to a copy of the memo obtained by Deadline.

    Disney plans to replace its “Diversity & Inclusion” performance factor to determine compensation for senior leaders with a new “Talent Strategy” category, as noted by Axios.

    But there will be some elements of the old “Diversity & Inclusion” factor in the new “Talent Strategy” factor.

    The factor deals with “how leaders uphold our company values, incorporate different perspectives to drive business success, cultivate an environment where all employees can thrive, and sustain a robust pipeline to ensure long-term organizational strength,” Coleman wrote.

    Disney will also scrap the “Reimagine Tomorrow” website, which highlighted tales from minority communities.

    It was replaced with a new “Inclusion” roadmap on the company website.

    “While this will continue to evolve, what won’t change is our commitment to fostering a company culture where everyone belongs and everyone can excel, enabling us to deliver the globally appealing entertainment that drives our business,” Coleman wrote.

    Axios also confirmed that Disney will remove some content warning labels on older productions.

    In dated movies like “Peter Pan,” the viewers could expect to see a warning that said the film will handle “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures.”

    But now, there is a shorter advisory about the content that will appear in the details section.

    “This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions,” the update said.

    These are some rather mitigated but significant shifts.

    As with several other companies, the diversity programs at Disney are not going away completely, but they will be reduced and folded into existing operations.

    Disney has been warring with government officials and even the culture at large over these issues for years now.

    At every turn, they have shoved wokeness in our faces, from the trigger warnings at the beginning of movies to the content of the newer productions.

    But the winds have shifted, and although wokeness may not yet be completely over, the point is that those days could be coming.

    A Baltimore man has been convicted of brutally attacking two elderly pro-life activists outside of a Maryland Planned Parenthood clinic.

    On May 26, 2023, the attacker Patrick Brice, 28, jumped then-80-year-old Dick Schaefer knocking him unconscious.

    When Mark Crosby, who was 73 at the time, intervened, Brice violently attacked him, too.

    Live Action reports:

    When then 73-year-old Mark Crosby tried to intervene, Brice turned his violence on him — shoving him to the ground and repeatedly punching him in the face. Police released video footage showing Brice preparing to kick Crosby in the face before leaving him injured on the pavement. Shockingly, several Planned Parenthood escorts stood nearby and did nothing to stop the attack.

    Crosby was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where doctors treated him for a shattered cheekbone, a broken orbital bone, temporary blindness in one eye, and severe head trauma. He remained hospitalized for three days and later required multiple surgeries. Schaefer sustained minor injuries but was left shaken by the brutality of the assault.

    Brice was not arrested for over a year despite the entire attack being captured on video. He was finally caught last July after a tip about his identity was sent to Metro Crime Stoppers.

    He was charged with multiple counts of assault, including first-degree assault and a charge for attacking an elderly person, according to the Live Action report.

    On February 8, Brice was convicted of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. He is facing a maximum sentence of 10 years on each charge.

    “This case sends a resounding message: Violence against peaceful pro-life advocates will not be tolerated,” the American Center for Law and Justice said in a statement. “The right to peacefully assemble and advocate for the unborn is fundamental and must be protected – lives depend upon it.”

    “After nearly two years of fighting for justice, this is a tremendous victory. The ACLJ will continue to stand vigilant in defense of life and constitutional freedoms.”

    Brice is scheduled to be sentenced on March 20.

    Schaefer and Crosby have continued to advocate for the unborn outside of Planned Parenthood.

    The Worcester City Council has voted to make the central Massachusetts city a “sanctuary” for “transgender and gender diverse” individuals.

    A two-hour public comment portion was chaotic and wild before Tuesday’s vote. A video of the speakers has gone viral on social media.

    According to the resolution, which passed with a 9-2 vote, the city “reiterates its commitment to transgender rights and equal protections for transgender community members, and declares itself a sanctuary city and a place of safety for transgender and gender diverse people.”

    “As a result of anti-transgender legislation throughout our nation, many individuals and families are relocating to states such as Massachusetts that are more accepting and offer inclusive services,” the resolution states.

    The Boston Globe reports, “The resolution also declares that the city should expend no municipal resources toward detaining people for ‘solely seeking or providing’ gender-affirming care, and that the city won’t cooperate with the federal government on ‘policies aimed to harm transgender and gender diverse people,’ and ensure that those communities can access healthcare, education, housing, and work without ‘fear or discrimination.’”

    When asked if the resolution would result in the city losing federal funding under the Trump administration, City Solicitor Alexandra Kalkounis indicated it is possible.

    Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty said he is willing to take the risk, according to a report from Mass Live.

    “We’re passing a resolution,” Petty said. “It’s just saying, hey, we got your back.”

    “That’s all it’s saying,” Petty added. “And that’s what people are looking for. So they can go home and sleep safe at night here in the city of Worcester.”

    The council members who voted against the resolution, Morris A. Bergman and Donna M. Colorio, are now being attacked by the LGBTQ community and other leftist activists for their position. They have both maintained that they voted against it to protect the city from losing federal funding.

    “It is really, really a sad day in America,” Rep. Ilhan Omar declared at a rally protesting the reconstruction of USAID.

    It wasn’t a sad day for America, but it was so for Somalia.

    Over the last two years, USAID doled out $2.3 billion in “humanitarian assistance” to Omar’s native Somalia. Last year it reported a request for $1.6 billion in aid and even in December 2024, with the Biden administration on the way out the door, it sent an additional $29 million.

    USAID support for Somalia had doubled under the Biden administration and with $3.3 billion from USAID allocated in the last 5 years. the threatened withdrawal of funding must have been a painful blow for Omar, who is very close to the Somali regime. Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Khaire had stated “the interest of Ilhan are not Ilhan’s, it’s not the interest of Minnesota, nor is it the interest of the American people, the interest of Ilhan is that of the Somalian people and Somalia.”

    Somalia, along with other Islamic terrorist entities, including the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Houthis in Yemen, and Hamas in Gaza, were among the top beneficiaries of USAID cash.

    USAID sent $2.1 billion to Gaza and the “West Bank” since the Hamas attacks of Oct 7. In 2024 alone, $917 million was programmed for the terrorist areas occupying Israel.

    USAID provided over $3.7 billion to Afghanistan since the Taliban took over with $832 million in the previous fiscal year alone. The money was so unaccountable that USAID refused to cooperate with SIGAR: the government watchdog tracking spending in Afghanistan intent on blocking money from aiding terrorists.

    Even while the United States of America was at war with the Houthis, the Islamic terrorist group firing on US Navy vessels out of Yemen, USAID continued to direct billions of dollars to Yemen. In 2024, USAID announced a $2.7 billion aid request for Yemen and allocated $753 million. Over the last 5 years, it doled out $3.4 billion.

    Other Islamic terrorist states that have heavily drawn on USAID include Pakistan which harbored Osama bin Laden, but benefited from $600 million in the last 5 years. While some American towns and cities lacked clean drinking water, USAID labored to build plants for Pakistan’s majority Muslim population even while it engaged in the persecution of Christians.

    USAID spent over $700 million on Iraq during the last 5 years even though the country has long since been governed by Iranian puppets whose militias have been firing on American soldiers.

    $3.4 billion was directed to Syria over the past 5 years by USAID even as it was caught in a civil war between Shiite Islamists aligned with Iran and Sunni Islamists aligned with Al Qaeda.

    USAID allocated $1.1 billion to spend on Lebanon even as the country was run by Hezbollah.

    While USAID is unable to function in Iran, between Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, over $8 billion was sent to Iranian puppet regimes aligned with terrorism.

    USAID had spent some $18.5 billion on Islamic terror states over those 5 years.

    This is not a full list of USAID spending in Muslim countries, but only those countries whose governments are closely interlinked with terrorists, sponsor terrorist groups or serve as puppets of terror groups and states. Some of these countries are actively in conflict with the U.S. They include countries responsible for the murder of American soldiers and terror attacks in America.

    USAID has sent $9.3 billion to Islamic terror states collectively responsible for killing over 3,000 American soldiers. Not only did Islamic terrorist states and groups kill us, but in the ultimate obscenity, we have rewarded them with millions of dollars for each of our murdered soldiers.

    The reconstruction of USAID under the full umbrella of the State Department rather than as a ‘super-NGO’ advancing anti-American interests across the globe has been met with outrage by critics claiming that foreign aid advances our national security.

    But is sending $18 billion to Islamic terror states really helping our national security…

    USAID has provided massive amounts of funding for the UN and NGO ‘non-profits’ which operate inside terrorist areas with little to no oversight. Special exemptions have been handed out to allow distributors of ‘humanitarian aid’ to partner with and do business with terrorists.

    Including some of the Islamic terrorist groups that America is still at war with.

    USAID’s partnerships with foreign governments, and with large unaccountable organizations including the UN and the World Bank, have raised concerns of money laundering. The revolving door between USAID personnel and some of the non-profit and for-profit groups who all profit from it has also raised questions about the legitimacy of those arrangements. And USAID’s active efforts to deny information about its activities to SIGAR, the U.S. government’s Afghan war watchdog, as well as to the incoming Trump administration, makes it a rogue agency.

    It may never be fully known how much of our foreign aid already went into the pockets of Islamic terrorists, but the USAID freeze and consolidation under the State Department can help make sure that the aid pipeline stops being a way to fund the Islamic terrorists killing Americans.

    This revelation confirms that the investigation was politicized from the beginning.

    This finding adds to the political tensions surrounding the handling of classified documents by senior officials.

    Activist judges across the nation have launched an all-out war against President Donald Trump’s constitutional authority, continuously blocking and interfering with his administration’s efforts to enhance national security and eliminate bureaucratic waste.

    These unelected leftist judges—many appointed by Obama, Biden and other radical Democrats—have weaponized the judiciary, twisting the Constitution to fit their anti-Trump agenda.

    Recently, over five federal judges issued temporary injunctions against President Trump’s executive orders, including measures to freeze government spending, dismiss ineffective civil servants, and restrict birthright citizenship.

    These activist judges are imposing their personal political biases over the clear mandate given to the President by the electorate.

    According to a detailed breakdown of the U.S. government’s structure under the Constitution, the executive branch, led by the President, is designed to enforce laws and manage the operations of federal agencies, including those within the Executive Office of the President, like the Office of Management and Budget, and the 15 executive departments, like the Department of Treasury and the Department of Education.

    Vance responded to the ongoing travesties on Sunday with a perfect analogy. Drawing on both his military experience and legal background, he noted what would happen if a judge tried to sabotage a general or an attorney general from performing their legal duties.

    “If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, that would be illegal,” Vance wrote. “If a judge tried to command the attorney general in how to use her discretion as a prosecutor, that’s also illegal.”

    President of Brownstone Institute, Jeffrey Tucker, shared an organizational chart outlining the functions of each branch of government.

    “Here is the federal government org chart. Observe what the president controls vs. what the judiciary controls. These are executive agencies the actions of which only the president is held responsible,” he wrote.

    He added, “I fear that POTUS needs to print this out and show it to the media so that they understand what’s going on. The president is held responsible for what these agencies do so therefore he needs control of them. Otherwise this chart and this system makes zero sense.”

    The interference from the judiciary, particularly from these radical judges, undermines the clear separation of powers intended by the framers of the Constitution.

    The White House announced on Tuesday the formation of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, tasked with advising President Donald Trump on national security challenges and advancing the administration’s “America First” agenda.

    Devin Nunes, chief executive officer of the Trump Media & Technology Group, which runs Truth Social, will serve as chairman. His general counsel, Scott Glabe, will also serve on the board.

    Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s daughter-in-law, Amaryllis Fox Kennedy; longtime head of global government affairs for Blackstone Wayne Berman; former chief of staff Reince Priebus, former National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien; and Katie Miller, who’s the wife of Trump’s White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, will also join the board.

    Former House Intel Chairman Devin Nunes broke the FISAgate story wide open after spearheaded an investigation into the FBI’s plot to frame Trump in 2016.

    In 2018, Nunes released a 4-page FISA memo that revealed the FISA court was misled by former FBI and DOJ brass James Comey, Sally Yates, Rod Rosenstein and Andrew McCabe.

    Noted pundit Byron York said the FISA memo also revealed a key point: “The FBI’s Andrew McCabe confirmed to the committee that no FISA warrant would have been sought from the FISA Court without the Steele dossier information.”

    Nunes previously sent a dozen criminal referrals to the Justice Department concerning leaks of “highly classified material” and conspiracies to lie to Congress and the FISA court.

    WASHINGTON — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Tuesday blasted President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that he would allow white South Africans to resettle in the U.S. as refugees.

    Trump halted all refugee resettlement in the U.S. in one of his first actions as president last month, then on Friday announced an exception for Afrikaners, the white descendants of mostly Dutch colonial settlers in South Africa, who Trump claims now face race-based persecution.

    “I think making our refugee resettlement system into one that is discriminatory obviously is problematic. It’s currently halted, and he wants to make an exception only for white people — that just is plainly wrong and ridiculous,” Omar told HuffPost.

    The country of South Africa was ruled by an Afrikaner-led apartheid regime that enforced strict segregation against its Black population until 1994. White South Africans are a minority group in the country and still generally better off than Black South Africans, owning disproportionate amounts of farmland and earning higher wages.

    The White House cut all aid to the country on Friday, on the grounds that South Africa had taken “aggressive actions” toward the U.S. and its allies, such as by accusing Israel of genocide, and claiming that a recently-enacted law would allow the South African government to seize land from its white citizens.

    Trump’s order said “the United States shall promote the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination, including racially discriminatory property confiscation.”

    Trump’s criticism of South Africa seemed at least partly to reflect the views of Elon Musk, the South African-born tech billionaire who bankrolled Trump’s campaign and now serves as an advisor in his administration.

    Omar, herself a refugee from Somalia who became a naturalized U.S. citizen at 17, suggested Musk had a hand in the new policy.

    “I don’t think people who facilitated apartheid should be looked at as the ones that are being oppressed. But Elon Musk is getting his money’s worth,” she said.

    Prominent groups that support Afrikaners in South Africa said that despite their opposition to the new land expropriation law, they had no interest in leaving the country to take advantage of Trump’s resettlement offer. “We have to state categorically: We don’t want to move elsewhere,” the leader of one such group said at a press conference on Saturday.

    Officials in the South African government deny that its white residents face arbitrary land seizures or other arbitrary deprivations.

    “It is ironic that the executive order makes provision for refugee status in the U.S. for a group in South Africa that remains amongst the most economically privileged,” the South African Foreign Ministry said.

    The Department of Justice has asked the courts to pause cases dealing with the Second Amendment. This action shows that the DOJ might be changing its position on gun cases.

    Last week, President Donald Trump issued an executive order asking the DOJ to review all the cases currently being litigated to ensure that none violate an American’s Second Amendment-protected rights. President Trump gave Attorney General Pam Bondi 30 days to respond to the executive order.
    It appears that the DOJ is acting on the President’s orders. The Department of Justice’s civil division is sending out a letter to the lawyers suing them, asking for a pause in the cases so the Department can review its stance. The DOJ could decide not to defend the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) positions in court, meaning it would hand wins to the pro-gun side of the debate.
    So far, action has only been taken by the DOJ’s civil division and not the criminal division. The civil division is responsible for defending the government’s position. The criminal division is accountable for taking action against those the government claims violated the law. There is no evidence that any criminal cases will be reviewed, although that is possible.

    This action could mean the ATF could not defend cases such as the multiple cases surrounding pistols equipped with stabilizing devices or cases about Forced Reset Triggers (FRT). They could also choose not to appeal any of their many recent losses. Under the President Joe Biden administration, the DOJ vigorously defended the ATF’s overreach and suffered multiple losses at the hands of various gun rights groups.

    Since the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision, the ATF has racked up countless defeats in court. Bruen eliminated means-end scrutiny. The federal government leaned heavily on intermediate scrutiny to justify its stances. Intermediate scrutiny is interest balancing, where the courts would consider the interest of the federal government over the rights of the people. SCOTUS said that the “Second Amendment is not a second-class right,” and only text, tradition, and history could be used to justify a gun law. Because of this decision, many gun laws have been struck down.

    Another tool the ATF loved to use was Chevron deference. Chevron deference said that if a law or rule is ambiguous, the regulating agency gets to decide what the law means. This legal theory led to things like the now-dead bump stock ban. In another Supreme Court case, Looper Bright Enterprises, the Justices at the high court eliminated Chevron deference, meaning one of the ATF’s favorite tools to regulate guns is now gone.
    Although most people celebrated the hold, seeing it as Donald Trump upholding the promise, some worry that it will be indefinite and that the ATF and DOJ are stalling to run out the clock. Time will tell. If, within 90 days, the DOJ stops defending certain cases, it could be a boom for the Second Amendment, leading to many court victories.
    Gun owners will be watching. Politicians have promised gun owners the world in the past, only to backtrack and break their promises.

  34. Missouri Opponents to Gun Rights Laws Claim Measures ‘Legalize Murder’

    Missouri used to be one of those places where you needed a permit before you could buy a gun. Now, it’s a state where they literally tried to nullify all federal gun control laws across the board.

    Talk about a change.

    However, there are some measures that are apparently still in place that lawmakers are trying to address. The goal is clearly an expansion and restoration of the right to keep and bear arms.

    But some people are outright hysterical about the subject.

    One of the measures, Senate Bill 74, would bar cities and counties from imposing their own open carry firearm restrictions. Another includes a provision that someone who kills another person with a gun in self-defense would be presumed to be acting reasonably, removing the burden of proof.

    A Missouri Senate committee is considering two bills that would repeal limitations on the carry and use of firearms.

    Senate Bill 74, sponsored by Stone County Republican Sen. Brad Hudson, would bar cities and counties from imposing their own open carry restrictions.

    Basically, this just removes a preemption exemption from the law. As it stands, they can bar open carry, and this ends local governments having that authority. That’s it.

    But the interesting one is the next bill.

    The other measure, Senate Bill 147, contains a wide array of changes, including making someone who uses a gun in self-defense immune to prosecution or civil action.

    The bill also includes a provision that someone who kills another person with a gun in self-defense would be presumed to be acting reasonably, removing the burden of proof.

    Members of law enforcement and the justice system voiced opposition, saying that the bill would amount to allowing people to kill without consequence.

    “All you have to do is say, someone threatened me, and now I can kill them,” said Parke Stevens from the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys. “This is not the state or the method to make murder legal.”

    Murder is still illegal, though. Legalizing murder would require you to, you know, explicitly legalize murder.

    All this measure seems to do is just take the approach of someone being innocent until proven guilty. The presumption is that they acted appropriately–you know, innocently–unless there’s evidence showing they didn’t. They don’t have to prove their innocence in court, which is kind of the foundational principle for our entire justice system.

    This shouldn’t be controversial.

    What prosecutors dislike about it is that it means they actually have to do work if they want to prosecute people in cases where they claim self-defense. They like it better when all they have to do is knock holes in the defense’s case. Now, they can’t do that and have to prove it’s murder rather than someone defending their life.

    Wild, I know.

    It should be noted that this is the law in multiple states and it has not, in fact, legalized murder.

    Florida, for example, has this standard in place, which didn’t stop prosecutors from sending someone to prison for killing a man in a store parking lot. That was just one example. There are others.

    This is really the most ridiculous argument one could make for a law that isn’t appreciably different from how every other crime is prosecuted. People don’t have to prove their innocence if they’re accused of robbery, for example. The state has to prove their guilt. Why should anyone have to prove their innocence in a self-defense shooting?

    The son and grandson of Joseph T. Tomasello, a notorious Colombo crime family capo, have been arrested on federal weapons charges after a raid on their Staten Island home turned up a huge arsenal, including a large stash of “ghost guns” and equipment used to produce them.

    Joseph Orapallo, 57, and his son Frank, 22, were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, February 5, at their home in New Dorp, a neighborhood on the South Shore of Staten Island, New York City. It was the NYPD Financial Crimes Task Force that carried out the raid that led to the discovery of a cache of weapons that includes rifles, shotguns and “ghost guns,” a made-up term for firearms that can be built at home with no serial numbers, a practice that has been legal since the founding of America but that has been given boogie man status by leftists in recent years. Ammunition was also found in the raid, as was 3D firearm-making equipment, according to law enforcement sources.

    While there is no indication as of yet as to why the raid was being conducted by a financial crimes unit, father and son were arraigned in a Staten Island Criminal Court specifically for “ghost gun” possession. The two face federal weapons charges and were ordered to be held on bail after the arraignment hearing. Family members of the father and son duo who attended the hearing declined to speak with reporters, though one of them used a hand gesture to let a New York Post photographer know he was number one.

    It is not clear if the Orapallos are themselves involved in organized crime, as Joseph tried to distance himself and his family from his mob boss father years ago by taking his mother’s maiden name. In fact, it was Joseph Jr. who tipped off authorities as to his father’s whereabouts the night before his wedding in 1998 while Tomasello hid out in the Catskills after six years on the run from racketeering and murder charges. Tomasello went away for racketeering and his complicity in five New York murders between 1991 and 1992, passing quietly in 2016 at the age of 84.
