  1. “You’ve got to see it. Until you see it you can’t imagine what it’s like.”

He was talking about the area of Vancouver known as East Hastings. He went on to describe a never-ending tent city of drug-addled addicts and rat infested streets. He said he had heard about it but wanted to see it for himself. He was a professional musician who traveled a lot. He was short, bald and wore big-rimmed glasses and a cap. Those glasses made him look like a million TV or movie characters.

An old friend invited me to dinner with some other old friends. It had been three years since we had seen each other. This guy, the musician, was in his early sixties. There was also the friend who had gathered us, another older friend of his, and then Bob. There was a point in the past when we were all pretty close. Alas, under every bridge the water flows, and we were no exception. Because of this I admit I was a little hesitant to join in. Leap-frogging the last three years was like jumping over the Atlantic ocean. So much change. What had they become, I wondered? What had I become relative to them?

The purpose of my recounting this evening is to note these changes, because I am sure this is a fairly common event these days. In the end, however, the little there is to report is, perhaps, the most newsworthy point. When all small talk is large, and all large talk small, why bother to speak, at all? Little conversational meat would be on the menu this evening.

Most of the two-hours was spent reminiscing about old acquaintances. This turned into an accounting of people who had recently died. The musician, who unsurprisingly was the most sociable of us, was the accountant. People went mostly by heart attack or stroke. The oldest one at our table sat listening in his wheelchair. He had recently lost his left leg to diabetes.

Bob was the most disappointed by the early end to the evening. “It’s only 10 o’clock!” he lamented. I think he expected we would be drinking like we used to.

No, I thought driving home, these last few years have really rearranged the furniture. Had someone told me three years ago what things would look like now, I am sure I would not have believed them. East Hastings is more than just a Vancouver neighborhood.

Here’s an interview with a practical man who, I imagine, is lousy at small talk:

    • When all small talk is large, and all large talk small, why bother to speak, at all?

Sometimes I wonder about that too.

I think the nonverbal connection is maybe more important than the content of the immediate conversation. The latter is transient, the former is lodged physically in the deep brain, where longterm memory is stored.

      • Thanks for grabbing that line. It is the best way to describe a very particular circumstance.

  2. Mueller “Pitbull” Andrew Weissmann Believes FOX Should Now Be Under Government Control
    By Joe Hoft Apr. 23, 2023 7:45 am0 Comments

Andrew Weissmann is responsible for more corruption at the DOJ than perhaps any person in history. He’s behind many of unconstitutional and criminal attacks on President Trump while reportedly leading the Mueller gang. He’s arguably the most corrupt prosecutor in US history, so it’s not surprising that he is a legal analyst on MSNBC.

Andrew Weissmann was intimately involved in some of the most egregious corruption scandals in US history. Weissmann was involved in FBI activities with the mob in New York in the 1990s. He was a key member of the Enron Task Force in the early 2000s and also was involved in the sale of Uranium One under Obama. After all of his corrupt acts, he then reportedly led the corrupt Mueller Special Counsel.

Attorney Sidney Powell shared the following about Andrew Weissmann:

Simple Trick Helps Restore Vision So
The hallmark of the Department of Justice for decades has been to seek justice not convictions and if that meant letting a guilty person go free to make sure the government did it all right, then that was supposed to happen.

But Mr. Weissman, he couldn’t spell the word “ethics” despite the fact somebody actually had him teach a course in it one time, I think over in England. His mantra is ‘the end justifies the means’… he targets people, individuals. And you’re right, I had no doubt from the moment he was picked for the Mueller Special Counsel operation, that he would have filed RICO charges against President Trump and seized every asset he ever had, if there had been any way he could do that.

He’s just filled with hatred for apparently most Americans and certainly anybody affiliated with President Trump. And he’s willing to do anything to destroy them.

Attorney David Schoen shared on Weissmann:

I have said, from my personal experience at least with this case, I consider Andrew Weissmann to be the most ethically bankrupt prosecutor I have ever encountered, and that’s a pretty broad spectrum of prosecutors over the course of my career…

    Roger Stone says about Weissmann:

I believe what the bible says in Hebrews 10: Vengence is served for the Lord – but there is a special place in hell for Andrew Weissmann.”

Rudy Giuliani, former New York prosecutor, America’s mayor, and President Trump’s friend and attorney has much to say about Weissmann’s corruption.

Andrew is a desecration of a prosecutor. He is, he is a person who has disgraced every single ethical tenet that prosecutors hold dear.

I personnally went through…the things that he did to [Paul] Manafort which was psychologial torture that he wouldn’t be allowed to do in a prison camp.

He indicts people for crimes that don’t exist. He makes them up. He’s been reversed by the Supreme Court for doing that unanimously. The only reason he’s kept in the Justice Department is he’s a convenient tool for the Democrats who want to criminalize politics.

He is sort of expert at criminalizing politics. He’s a very, very dangerous man. He’s had enough, found, proven ethical violations that he should have been fired a long time ago. And he’s only there because the Justice Department and the FBI at the highest levels are no longer the creature of the government of laws. They’re now the state police, as if we were in East Germany, the Soviet Union or current China

MSNBC brought on Andrew Weissmann to discuss the FOX News settlement with Dominion last week. Weissmann thinks the US government should take over FOX. (This is what communists do, right?)

MSNBC legal analyst Andrew Weissmann suggested Friday that the U.S. government should regulate Fox News as a punishment following the outlet’s settlement with Dominion…

“You need to have the government step in to have some kind of regulation of that kind of conduct,” Weissmann added.

    • SERBIA – Vucic demonstrated Serbian Military Might to Orban

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, is expected to visit the Serbian checkpoint “Gradina” on the border with Bulgaria today, in order to familiarize himself with the measures against illegal migration, BTA reported.

Yesterday he watched a military parade outside Belgrade alongside Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who made an unannounced advance visit to Serbia.

He was welcomed by Vucic, who said he was happy to “again welcome a great friend of Serbia”.

The parade was held at the Batajnica military airport and is on the occasion of Serbian Army Day. The event included flyovers of MiG-29 fighter jets and Mil helicopters, as well as a demonstration of recently delivered Chinese anti-aircraft missile systems and drones.

“Serbia has never had a stronger army in its history as it has today. Today we are strong enough to preserve our country, protect peace and ensure further progress. This is Serbia’s strength!” Vucic said. The Ministry of Defense in Belgrade announced that the “Granit 2023” armed forces review involves more than 5,000 military personnel with 2,300 pieces of weaponry and combat equipment and more than 60 aircraft.

The president of the Bosnian Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik was also present at the parade.

  3. Watch: Mayor Adams Takes Shot at Biden, Claims NYC is Being ‘Destroyed’ by Fed Gov’t
By Warner Todd Huston, The Western Journal Apr. 23, 2023 8:15 am10 Comments

In an uncharacteristic move, New York’s left-wing, progressive, Democrat Mayor, Eric Adams, has taken a shot at a Democrat president, saying that Joe Biden’s open border policies are “destroying” his city.

Adams lashed out at Biden’s policies during an event in Washington D.C. hosted by the African American Mayors Association.

“The city is being destroyed by the migrant crisis,” Adams directly asserted.

Oddly, this is the same Eric Adams who only two years ago was proclaiming that America should “protect our immigrants. Period.”

    • Canadian Medical Association Journal article calls for governments to “address the risks of misinformation” online

      More speech regulation calls.

An article published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) has undertaken a formidable task: to engage in lockdown revisionism – while stating that it is fighting lockdown revisionism.

The lockdown here refers to the radically restrictive, invasive and long-lasting measures the authorities put in place during the Covid pandemic, but the article believes that the very word “lockdown” has now gained not only a powerful, but also “perverted” meaning.

Talk about “perverted” use of language – this development which worries CMAJ has taken place not only during the pandemic, but during “the infodemic.”

For those not in the know, “infodemic” is a pandemic-era neologism pushed by the likes of the World Health Organization (WHO) et al., meant to signify “an overabundance of information – some accurate and some not – that makes it hard for people to find trustworthy sources and Access to the right reliable guidance when they need it.”

In other words, people don’t know what’s good for them, and in come all sorts of “trustworthy sources” to sort “the truth” out for them; the CMAJ article in particular wants to deal with “misinformation on lockdowns” and calls that – “lockdown revisionism.”

It is this – rather than any actions taken by governments – that has eroded trust in public health initiatives over the past three years, the journal is convinced.

The article’s authors also curiously insisted on peppering it with the mention of “democratic governments” engaging in these initiatives, possibly to bolster the “trustworthiness” of their own argument here (in reality, all sorts of governments did this – and some viewed as democratic then, did not emerge from the pandemic with that image unscathed.)

The CMAJ wants these “good” governments to now do more controversial things, such as, put euphemistically, “address the risks” of what is seen as misinformation amplification on social media.

Some of this “misinformation,” specifically regarding lockdowns as a tool of repression, not only physical, but also intellectual (considering censorship faced by those expressing their skepticism on those social sites), is defined pretty well – although, clearly from CMAJ’s point of view, as a negative phenomena (“elements of outlandish conspiracies”).

Things like this: “Lockdowns have been framed as reckless and unscientific, as junk science, as an excuse to permanently oppress populations, as gaslighting with ever-shifting goalposts.”

If that sounds about right, the CMAJ considers you a misinformation peddler with possibly a knack for outlandish conspiracies.

And now, how to fix that?

“Governments could consider strategies — including increased regulatory scrutiny — to address the risks of misinformation being amplified on social media,” is one of the ideas presented in the article.

    • Vaccine injuries become the dominant theme of German reporting on the mRNA jabs, as the Covid vaccinations face unacknowledged yet ever wider cultural and social repudiation

The number of unflattering press stories has been growing since the bivalents flopped last Fall.

Last month, German Health Minister and renowned virus pest Karl Lauterbach gave a remarkable interview in which he denounced “exorbitant” pharmaceutical profits, deplored “dismaying” vaccine injuries, and called for the manufacturers to set aside funds for those who have been harmed. He did so amid a growing wave of reporting on vaccine injuries in the German press – a wave which his statements have now turned into a tsunami. In the weeks since, vaccine injuries and side effects have become the dominant theme of German press coverage on the jabs, from local papers to national media.

It’s been a serious shift, the likes of which I’m not sure has unfolded in any other country. To give you a taste of it, I’ve assembled a representative selection of stories from the last eight weeks or so, in roughly reverse chronological order. As you read through them, remember that these are all links to publications read by ordinary people; I’ve excluded all media with overt Covid-sceptic associations.

      From the national tabloid BILD:

He lost his sight: Dietmar S. sues Biontech for 150,000 Euros.

Dietmar S. became as good as blind in his right eye following Covid vaccination. Now the case is going to trial.

      From Der Spiegel:

“The problems are hushed up”: Marburg cardiologist Bernhard Schieffer treats people who suffer from long-term symptoms after Covid vaccinations. He criticises the lack of support – and Health Minister Karl Lauterbach.

From the Hessische/Niedersäschsische Allgemeine, a regional paper:

Post-Vac: “My life is no longer like before” – Sick after Covid vaccination.

Almost five million people in Hesse have been vaccinated against Covid-19. Some have developed serious illnesses afterwards. One of them is Dieter Gebert from Kassel.

From the local Frankfurter Neue Presse:

Lupus after Covid vaccination: A young woman from Hesse is treated in special Cologne clinic.

19-year-old Juline from Butzbach was severely injured by a Corona vaccination and now requires expensive immunoadsorption.

From the state media behemoth ZDF:

Covid vaccine injury: Do manufacturers face liability? Anyone who has suffered vaccine damage can take action against the vaccine manufacturers and apply for state benefits. But the hurdles for compensation are high.

From tagesschau, a major state media news service:

Soon the first lawsuits will start: Across Germany, there are almost 200 civil lawsuits against Corona vaccine manufacturers like BioNTech. The plaintiffs claim to have been harmed by the vaccination.

      From the regional Schwäbische Zeitung:

Injection with an aftermath: A man from Sigmaringen suffered a stroke after Covid vaccination

Shortly after the second jab, Bernhard Strobel collapsed. He still feels the consequences today. Now he is going to court.

      Again from BILD:

VACCINE INJURY! 1ST CASE BEFORE THE COURT: Oxana G. (35) is wheelchair-bound following Covid vaccination.

Across Germany, 185 civil lawsuits are pending because of damages caused by Corona vaccinations. Oxana G. (35) is one of the injured parties. The fact that the courts are finally dealing with her case is already seen as a success by the woman from Halle: “I have lost my life – as I knew it before. I hope that my family and I will finally receive compensation and help.”

From hessenschau, a publication of the regional Hessischer Rundfunk:

Sick following Covid vaccination: Why official points of contact [for the vaccine injured] are necessary.

Around 5 million people in Hesse have been vaccinated against Corona. Some have become seriously ill as a result of the vaccination. Those affected often fail in their search for medical expertise; they feel abandoned by the health system and the state.

From Die Zeit, Germany’s largest weekly newspaper:

What we know about Covid vaccine injury: Karl Lauterbach has promised victims of vaccine damage faster help – and caused confusion about how common it is in the first place. The state of the question.

      From the Berliner Zeitung:

Covid vaccine researcher: “Allegations must be investigated immediately.” Vaccine researcher Carlos A. Guzmán talks about the benefits, limitations and side effects of the Covid vaccine – as well as allegations of inconsistencies in the approval process.

From the Bamberg-based news portal inFranken:

Pensioner (87) dies eight months after Covid vaccination – his son’s lawsuit fails.

After an elderly man died within a few months of Covid vaccination, his son filed a lawsuit against the doctor. He has now failed before the Landgericht.

      Again from ZDF:

The suffering of Covid vaccine victims: Long-term complaints can occur following a Corona infection. Vaccination is supposed to protect against this – but it can also have side effects. What’s next for the vaccine-injured?

      From Tagesspiegel:

Possible heart damage after Covid vaccination: Woman sues BioNTech for damages. The company is facing its first civil lawsuit for alleged damages caused by the Corona vaccine. The trial is scheduled to begin on 15 March at the Frankfurter Landgericht.

The trend is so dominant that it colours all other reporting on Covid and the vaccines. It’s hard to miss the subtle anxiety at work in pieces like this one from the Vienna-based Standard, asking whether we’ll have to vaccinate ourselves against Corona every year from here on out, or the not-so-veiled notes of hope in ZDF reporting on successful Phase 1 trials of the German nasal vaccine. What’s the big deal about regular vaccination and why should we care about new live attenuated vaccines, if the mRNA jabs were God’s gift to man?

There are clear, encouraging patterns here. The reporting originally surrounded lawsuits brought against the vaccine manufacturers, but has steadily assumed a more general focus. Regional and local papers are carrying a big share of these stories, with major state media playing a supporting role. The publications most popular with German biens pensants, meanwhile, like Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit and even Frankfurter Allgemeine, are pointedly underrepresented. This is a trend driven from the bottom up by popular interest, and in that it is the opposite of much Covid reporting since 2020.

Of course, these stories have always been out there, but until the last few months, enthusiasm for the vaccines was sufficient to suppress them. As with all pandemic policies, mass vaccination exhibits qualities of inertia. Obsession steadily grew through the summer months of 2021, as the jab failed to eradicate Covid, and achieved a frenzied peak around December 2021. There was nothing to do about the insane mania and its manifold irrationality back then, and the steady disenchantment with these products will prove just as inexorable.

This isn’t the repudiation I would have chosen. The focus on isolated stories allows the very same press outlets to recycle WHO propaganda that the vaccines have saved a million European lives, and to repeat uncritically the claims of foolish regulators that “vaccination was the decisive factor” in ending the pandemic. I also have reservations about the emerging discussion of “Post-Vac Syndrome” – not because I doubt that the vaccines have made people sick, but because it seems to be built from the same ill-defined grab-bag of fibromyalgia-adjacent symptoms as Long Covid. This is a continuation of the media-supported myth that vaccine injuries are merely a subset of the long-term sequelae from Covid itself, and it’s a not-so-subtle way to preempt any kind of cost-benefit analysis. But, for a pandemic that was also built largely on innumerate anecdotes, and a media that has proven chronically unable to notice basic patterns or count things, perhaps this is the only repudiation that was ever possible.

The pharmaceuticals have made a lot of money, but their mRNA vaccines have failed. The Robert Koch Institut have stopped updating their vaccine dashboard, after almost four months of totally flatlined uptake; one of the foremost mRNA promoters, Bill Gates, has called the jabs a disappointment and compared them unfavourably to masks, of all things; and BioNTech, facing a revenue decline of 70 percent, have announced an impending return to mRNA-based cancer therapies – their original focus upon their founding in 2008, where they’ve never enjoyed particular success. Perhaps if the vaccinators had proceeded cautiously, limiting their promises and jabbing only the most vulnerable on a strictly voluntary basis, they could’ve preserved some future for their doubtful products. Instead, they oversold and over-administered their snake oil, and two years later most people have decided they don’t like it very much.

  4. “Elon Musk will do what he is asked to do if he wants to continue to operate” warns Thierry Breton

It is a warning. “From September, Elon Musk will do what he is asked to do if he wants to continue operating“, warned the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, on France Inter.

And for good reason, the very large online platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook or Amazon, will have to apply, from September, the new EU legislation entered in force to eliminate areas of lawlessness on the Internet. The Commission’s departments target in particular hate speech, “privacy“and misinformation.

”We will be protected from online harassment, fake news, we will be protected from a lot of things that we complain about and everything that makes today, in the information space, we have the feeling that we are in a lawless space“, detailed Thierry Breton.

The Digital Services Act (DSA) imposes a long list of rules on social networks, marketplaces and search engines. These rules include the obligation to act “promptly “to remove any illegal content as soon as the platform becomes aware of it, or the obligation to inform the judicial authorities when they suspect a”serious criminal offense “.

They also include prohibitions, such as those to exploit the data “sensitive” users (gender, political leaning, religious affiliation, etc.) for targeted advertising. And transparency obligations, such as the publication of the main parameters used by recommendation systems.

Audits will take place before September, in particular at Twitter

Thierry Breton made it clear that he was going “announce this week what are” THE “systemic platforms“, specifying that between “19 and 25“will be affected.”They will have to very quickly radically change their operation if they want to continue to operate in Europe.“,
underlined the commissioner, in charge of digital. “We are going to check what is happening in their algorithms (…) how many moderators they have, if the moderators are indeed in each of the languages ??of the Union“, enumerated the commissioner. He said to have proposed to these giants, “before September“, when the legislation will apply to them, “to go and do blank audits“, that is to say, prior, without consequences in the event of an infringement. “Imagine that Elon Musk accepted“such an audit of Twitter, which the billionaire recently took control of, added Thierry Breton, saying he intends to “travel to California to participate in this audit myself”.

The Commission is in the process of setting up a team of around 100 “extremely sharp specialists“digital and algorithms, and who will be responsible for carrying out these audits, also revealed Thierry Breton. “I’m in the process of creating a team that will make ‘descents’ when it deems it necessary to do so in the event of a problem with this or that platform“, specified the European commissioner.

The unique capacity of our species to be bound and united by intangible narratives, even across oceans, was central to Sapiens, his mind-bogglingly popular chronicle of our species’ rise, which catapulted him to seer-like status after its publication in English nearly a decade ago.
Perhaps that is why he is so profoundly concerned today about the rise of a challenger to our tale-telling mastery – artificial intelligence (AI).

“This is the first technology in history to create stories,” says Harari, 47, speaking to me from his house on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. For him, nothing could be a greater demonstration of power. For in his view, our collective belief in “stories” – of faith, finance, and nation among others – has fuelled mankind’s domination of the Earth. Money has allowed us to thrive, for example, but what value the fiver in your pocket if the shopkeeper dismisses it as just a bit of blue paper?

Now AI can weave such spells too, showing that the technology’s potential both for great good and harm, once considered distant and theoretical, is now immediate and real. That is why Harari added his name to a letter last month, signed by thousands of experts including Elon Musk, calling for a moratorium on research into software like Chat GPT, an AI model which can engage with humans in almost disturbingly nuanced, creative text.

Other programs can do the same with pictures and sounds. “The new generation of AI is not just spreading the content that humans produce. It can produce the content by itself,” Harari says. “Try to imagine what it means to live in a world where most texts and melodies and then TV series and images are created by a non-human intelligence. We just don’t understand what it means. What could be the consequences of AI taking over culture?”

Trivial examples already exist. Last week a German magazine was lambasted for publishing what appeared to be an exclusive interview with Michael Schumacher, when it fact the text was generated by AI imitating the paralysed former racing driver. Harari suggests AI will soon go much further, evoking a world in which “you go online and you argue with somebody about some political issue. Maybe they even send you a video of themselves talking. But there is no person behind it. It is all AI.”

Nor, in his dystopia, would the synthetic digital fake be of just any human being. Because we are uniquely influenced by those close to us, it might seem to be a friend or relative, trying to convince you of the merit of a product, or their position on climate change, vaccines, or immigration. It would be, he says, a power to manipulate the public discourse never before seen, and which would make the social media influence scandals of the last 10 years, already thought to have played a role in elections from Brazil to America, seem trivial. Jeremy Fleming, the head of GCHQ, has warned the cabinet that AI disinformation poses a significant threat.

An AI generated image of Pope Francis in a puffer jacket that went viral this month

“This is especially a threat to democracies more than to authoritarian regimes because democracies rely on public conversation,” says Harari. “Democracy basically is conversation. People talking with one another. If the conversation is taken over by AI, democracy is over.”

But what effect could the technology have if unleashed maliciously on the battlefield, by totalitarian regimes? One Google AI system, for example, taught itself Bengali without being trained to do so.

“The Nazi regime was based on technologies like trains and electricity and radios. They didn’t have tools like artificial intelligence,” says Harari. “A new regime in the 21st century will have much more powerful tools. So the consequences could be far more disastrous. This is something that I don’t know if humanity can survive.”

Even more banal consequences have the potential to be revolutionary, he says. “Another danger is that a lot of people might find themselves completely out of a job, not just temporarily, but lacking the basic skills for the future job market. We might reach a point where the economic system sees millions of people as completely useless. This has terrible psychological and political ramifications.”

It is the autonomy of AI that makes it so different. Yet even Harari, who has made his name boiling down complex topics, seems frustrated by his inability to make the rest of us see this as profoundly as he does.

“We need to understand that AI is the first technology in history that can make decisions by itself. It can make decisions about its own usage. It can also make decisions about you and me. This is not a future prediction. This is already happening.”

He discusses notorious cases in which AI software has been used to vet loan applicants, or decide whether prisoners should receive parole. “So power is shifting away for the first time in history. We invented something that takes power away from us. And it’s happening so fast that most people don’t even understand what is happening. We need to make sure that AI makes good decisions about our lives. This is something that we are very far from solving.”

Like others he now espouses regulation to manage AI’s power – harnessing its promise and preventing catastrophe. In Harari’s mind, such rules would emulate medical safeguards. “A drug company cannot release a new medicine to the market without first going through a lengthy regulatory process. It’s really bizarre and frightening that corporations can just release extremely powerful AI tools into the public sphere without any similar safety measures.”

Such measures would have to be enforced by government, he insists. Expecting the tech industry to regulate itself is for the birds. “With all due respect to Elon Musk and Zuckerberg or the other heads of big tech companies, they are not elected by anybody, don’t represent anybody except for their shareholders and there is no reason to trust them.” As if to prove Harari’s point, Musk announced his own AI chatbot mere days after signing the letter denouncing the research of others.

Maybe it’s no surprise then, that Harari keeps his own phone switched off, “in a drawer”. He calls it “an emergency smartphone” for when he travels abroad, which is considerably more in the last decade, since he became a global intellectual superstar.

“It has become really impossible to do some things without a smartphone.” One thinks of him trying to order a taxi on a foreign trip, and failing. What he doesn’t miss from his pocket screen, however, is the distracting flood of information pouring into his brain. He declares himself on “an information diet”.

“There is too much junk information,” he says. “It’s like food. For most of human history, we were desperately trying to get more food. And now we are in the opposite situation. We need to be very careful about both the quantities but also the quality of the food that we take in.”

He contrasts the focus and active choice involved in “reading” to this passive, goggle-eyed “consumption” of information. It is hard to imagine Harari doing anything in such a thoughtless fashion. He likes time and peace to compose his thoughts, and has long been keen on meditation to ensure he is mentally tuned to keep distractions at bay. “I just returned from a two month meditation retreat,” he says. “You can say it’s part of the information diet…a period to disconnect and allow the mind to detoxify itself from all the garbage that we take in.”

Harari may be able to take so much time out given the financial security that his fame has brought (in one New Yorker profile, it was suggested his fee for a single 24-minute speech amounted to several hundred thousand dollars). But his interest in meditation predates his success, and his instinct to pause, reflect on big themes and make connections between them goes back further still, when he found that growing up gay made him something of an outsider, looking in on the rest of society, trying to explain it. “1980s Israel was so homophobic,” he says.

He grew up near Haifa, in northern Israel, the precociously bright youngest child (he has two older sisters) of Shlomo – a defence contractor – and Pnina Harari. By his late teens he was gravitating towards mediaeval history, which he studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem until 1998, when he moved to Jesus College, Oxford to complete his PhD.

Harari returned to Israel in 2003, the year that Hebrew U (as Hebrew University is known), started running a primer for undergraduates called “An Introduction to the History of the World”. As specialists, established academics tended to shy away from such a broad course, so as a new and junior member of faculty Harari found himself teaching it. Nervous, he wrote scripts for his 20 lectures. They were to become the basis of Sapiens.

But that is to make his path to fame and wealth seem simple. In fact the manuscript of Sapiens was repeatedly rejected in Israel, and then, when it did finally find a publisher, languished untranslated for several years. Harari even resorted to translating into English himself and using Amazon’s print-on-demand service.

It was a struggle that he may not have had the determination to pursue without the grit of his husband, Itzik Yahav, whom he met via a dating site in 2002. Yahav not only helped get Harari’s career off the ground, he has been a key factor in ensuring he has subsequently flown so high, to the extent he now has a well-staffed office that is the envy of other public intellectuals. “If it was only me, I would have long ago collapsed or given up,” Harari once said of Yahav.

Harari has since published two other sweeping history books – Homo Deus (2016) and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century (2018). Last year he released his first children’s book, Unstoppable Us: How Humans Took Over the World, and Sapiens has also been adapted into a graphic novel series. But his most pressing preoccupation today is the state of his own nation, notably the plans of the coalition led by Benjamin Netanyahu to prune the powers of Israel’s Supreme Court, which currently acts as the sole brake on legislative power.

“The government is basically trying to establish a dictatorship here,” Harari says, an edge to his usual methodical delivery. “I think that there is a real threat to the survival of Israeli democracy.” He says it is “absolutely true” that Israelis and Israeli companies are leaving because “the government is trying to dismantle the checks and balances of Israeli democracy.”

“If the Israeli parliament passes a law that, for instance, takes away voting rights from Arab citizens – and some politicians have been talking about exactly such a law – the only institution that can intervene, strike down such a law is the Supreme Court.”

He says some members of the coalition want to be able “to rig elections”, “already prepared a long list of laws and regulations that will discriminate against Arab citizens, against women, against LGBT people, against secular people” and “hold messianic views and have a strong belief in Jewish supremacy.”

While the measures have been paused in the wake of huge street protests “the crisis is still ongoing,” he says. “And if the government succeeds then Israel will go the same route as Turkey and Russia – which may still hold periodic elections, but are no longer really democracies.”

Comparisons with Viktor Orban’s rule in Hungary are misplaced, he says, because Israel is “a major military power with nuclear capabilities, and also with cyber capabilities which really have a global reach. People in the UK should care about what’s happening in Israel because it could destabilise the entire Middle East with immediate consequences also for Europe.”

My time with the oracle is flying by. If I was paying I would be past a million bucks by now. We consider the Ukraine war (“the consequences for the whole of humanity could be tragic”); climate change (“I hear people say that climate change is something that democracies are inherently incapable of dealing with because it’s a long term problem. I don’t think that’s true.”); Covid lockdowns (“in the early stages of the pandemic, when we just didn’t know what we were facing, extreme measures were more justified”); transgender rights (“My personal position is traditional. I think that sex is an objective biological phenomenon whereas gender is cultural”); the coronation (“It’s very hard in a single country to get tens of millions of people to live together and agree on anything. In Britain, the Royal family has a very important symbolic role to play”). Eventually, we end by talking about happiness. Harari concludes Sapiens by noting that, despite vast increases in our prosperity, mankind “seems as discontented as ever”. Does the same go for him?

“My life completely changed [with fame],” he says. “Ten years ago nobody wanted to interview me about anything. So I had a lot of time to just read books and then write my stuff. Fame on the personal level, it usually just creates more problems.” On balance though, friends, meditation and therapy, and shedding the anxieties of youth all mean “I’m happier now.”

It is an upbeat way to end a discussion with a man who, like some oracles of old, is occasionally lambasted for serving up gloomy analysis of humanity’s condition but offering no remedy (his most famous tome concludes: “The Sapiens regime on Earth has so far produced little that we can be proud of”).

But by the time we wind up it’s not his ability elegantly to describe so many potential catastrophes that I find deeply unsettling, so much as his inability to say why our species has such a habit of wreaking havoc. His words ring in my ears: “The best I can say is that history is full of mistakes. A lot of major events are not the result of some inevitable forces of history. They are simply the result of humans making terrible mistakes. The basic thing you need to assume is that people are fallible. People are corruptible. A good institution or a good country is one that enjoys strong self-correcting mechanisms.”

Like Israel’s Supreme Court. It is a lesson, he thinks, not just key to the survival of his nation as a democracy, but to the survival of the world full stop.

  5. Student Government at Whitworth University in WA Rejects Campus Speaker Who Survived Mao’s Communist Revolution in China
    By Mike LaChance Apr. 23, 2023 10:45 am13 Comments

The conservative student group Turning Point USA at Whitworth University in Washington state invited Xi Van Fleet to speak on campus, but the student government at the school rejected the event.

What is the problem? Is the left wing student government afraid that students at the school might learn what life is really like under a communist regime?

This is also a Christian school.

What are they afraid of?’: Student govt. rejects hosting anti-woke survivor of Maoist China

The student government at Whitworth University (WU) voted to reject a speaker who survived communism under Mao Zedong and criticizes woke culture for suppressing opposing ideas.

During an Apr. 12 meeting, the Associated Students of Whitworth University (ASWU) voted 9-4 against hosting Xi Van Fleet on campus. Van Fleet immigrated from Maoist China to the U.S. and draws parallels between the Chinese Cultural Revolution and what she calls the “Woke Revolution,” according to a description of her book Mao’s America: A Survivor’s Warning.

  6. BIDEN FOREIGN POLICY: US Embassy in Sudan Evacuated by Special Forces
By Joe Hoft Apr. 23, 2023 9:45 am

The US Embassy in Sudan is being evacuated. Special Forces are reportedly on the ground helping US Embassy workers in the evacuation.

The Biden gang couldn’t run the nation any worse than it currently is. This is why many experts believe that American haters are running the US into a brick wall going 140 mph.

    The New York Times reported:

The United States military airlifted embassy officials out of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, amid continuing violence as rival military leaders battled for control of Africa’s third-largest country, President Biden said late on Saturday.

“Today, on my orders, the United States military conducted an operation to extract U.S. government personnel from Khartoum,” Mr. Biden said in a statement released by the White House.

In a briefing for reporters, officials said that just over 100 special operations troops were involved in evacuating under 100 people — mostly U.S. Embassy employees — using helicopters that flew in from the nation of Djibouti, about 800 miles away.

“The operation was fast and clean, with service members spending less than an hour on the ground in Khartoum,” said Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Sims II, the director for operations at

  7. Lawsuit Filed Against DOJ For Records on Appointees Installed in the Department to Advance Biden’s Radical Agenda

America First Legal (AFL) has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice for records on “political appointees installed in the Department to advance the Biden Administration’s radical agenda.”
The lawsuit alleges that the DOJ has violated Freedom of Information Act laws by failing to provide nonexempt records related to their request.

“AFL sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Department of Justice to obtain resumes and basic records on political appointees, including names, titles, positions, salaries, ethics pledges, and more, so that the American people can know exactly who is behind the scenes at the DOJ,” AFL said in a press release about the lawsuit.

As liberal states and municipalities are exploring the idea of reparations for African-Americans, one US Senate candidate in Ohio who is vying to oust Sherrod Brown (D-OH) floated giving reparations to White Americans, but not all White Americans.

  9. Rep. Nancy Mace: We Found SEVERAL MORE Biden Family Members Involved, More Shell Companies, and Sources of Funds Unknown (VIDEO)
    By Jim Hoft Apr. 22, 2023 8:40 pm358 Comments

Rep. Nancy Mace went on America’s Newsroom on FOX News on Friday morning with Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino.

During her segment Rep. Mace revealed that there are SEVERAL MORE Biden family members involved in their criminal grifting. Rep. Mace also said there are more shell companies to explore and more questions about what the Biden family members were being paid for.

It appears Joe Biden and his family were selling out the American people for decades.

Rep. Nancy Mace: This whistleblower is putting everything on the line to provide the American people with this information. It should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law. When the left says that no one is above the law, the American people deserve the right to have them put their money where their mouth is, whether it’s a current or former president or their family. This should be investigated, and we need more information.

We only looked at the SARS reports (suspicious activity reports) for two Biden family members. Well, there are several more Biden family members that you were at the treasury you look at, too. And then we found more Biden family members involved, more shell companies, the sources of the funds being unknown, where they’re going unknown, and why they were paid for. And the numbers are astronomical. I mean, it’s crazy. And yet I’m very much a centrist. I’m right of center, left of center, depending on the issue. And I’ve seen this with my own eyes. It’s not a conspiracy theory.

  10. After Disastrous Debates in 2020, Democrats Have Decided to Not Hold Presidential Debates in 2024
    By Joe Hoft Apr. 23, 2023 11:20 am2 Comments

Communists don’t need debates. Leaders are chosen.

As noted in the first chapter of The Steal: Volume II – The Impossible Occurs – Joe Biden was lost during the 2020 campaign.

…former Vice President Joe Biden was a disaster. He looked lost at times and was embarrassing during the Democrat debates. Early on, it was clear he wasn’t going to be able to take on President Trump. After a short time, it appeared that none of the Democrats running for office could take on President Trump.

The Democrat debates were a total disaster because of the communist-leaning policies of the left that no good American was behind and because their candidates were awful. TGP reported on this at the time. In December 2019, the Democrats held a debate and nobody cared. The debate received the smallest audience to date. These debates got worse and worse.

  11. Political Prisoner Kenneth Joseph Thomas a Veteran and Father of Four Did Not Enter US Capitol, Did Not Attack Police, Faces 30 Years in Prison

less than a month, K. Joseph Thomas faces a judge and jury for 12 federal charges surrounding his attendance at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Joseph estimates he faces 30 years in prison. As a husband, father of four, and home for his father-in-law on hospice, he is anxious about the well-being of the family for whom he is the only breadwinner.

With the full weight of a politically weaponized government on his back, Joseph knows he is going into the fire, but that has never stopped him before.

Throughout his life, Joe has achieved many accomplishments. In the US Navy, he served in Afghanistan and Iraq (OEF and OIF). He married, and while raising their four children, earned a Bachelor’s degree studying anthropology, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. He wanted to understand man and to be able to translate the Bible himself from the original scriptures, which he has accomplished. Joe enjoys referring to himself as a “slack-jawed yokel from West Virginia,” but he is, nonetheless, a member of MENSA at the highest level.

Joe and his wife run a Christian-based dog rescue on their property. Currently, he works tirelessly and unrelentingly in the field as an electrical engineer, always going above and beyond for his company. Furthermore, Joe is an independent Christian minister and frequently preaches on Sundays in local churches.

BIDEN’S ENERGY WIZ SECRETLY HOOKED UP HUNTER/BURISMA, BUT PUBLICLY DENIED ALL KNOWLEDGE

    MIKE MCCORMICK

United States energy envoy Amos Hochstein played a crucial and secretive role in the ObamaBiden Burisma kickback scheme, Biden Laptop emails reveal.

And he should be investigated, indicted, and jailed for breaking the law by lying about it to Congress.

Here’s a link to Hochstein’s interview before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Committee on Finance, on September 17th, 2020. Since it’s a whopping 216 pages, I’ll go through and pull out the juicy bits and compare them to the facts as expressed in the Biden Laptop.

At the time of the interview Hochstein was out of government. But now as a result of the fraudulent 2020 election of Joe Biden, he is once again working for Joe at the State Department as the senior advisor for energy security. The Washington Post has dubbed him Biden’s “energy whisperer.” So apparently crime as a Democrat does pay.

  14. WAYNE ROOT: It’s Time For a National Trump Strike
    By Assistant Editor Apr. 23, 2023 12:20 pm22 Comments

    By Wayne Allyn Root

My last two books are about harnessing the power of conservative patriots. We are the Silent Majority. We (the working class, middle class and upper middle class- small business owners) form a solid majority of all the consumer spending in America. We are the economic engine of this country. If we ever united on a cause, we could bring this economy to a standstill. I’ve found the cause.

The persecution of President Donald J. Trump.

Let me start with the premise of my books- which is the premise of this strategy. Two years ago, I wrote “The Great Patriot Protest & Boycott Book.” It was a national bestseller. My strategy in the book was for conservatives, patriots and Christians to stop spending money with woke, liberal companies that were using our money to fund the destruction of America. We identified 116 woke companies to boycott.

It worked. Since my book was published, the companies we identified have lost over $1 trillion dollars in market value. Led by the worst woke company on the planet- Disney.

    Victory!

Now comes Part II- the positive side of the same strategy. My latest book, “The Great Patriot BUY-cott Book” identifies the 123 best, most conservative, patriotic companies to buy from. Companies you can be proud to support.

Timing is everything in life. Along came Budweiser. This was Exhibit A for proving our strategy works. And proving conservative patriots have the power to punish the bad guys. Budweiser and parent company Anheuser-Busch lost $6 billion dollars of market value in 6 days. That doesn’t count their loss in actual sales. Rumor has it sales are down dramatically across the country. We hit Bud where it hurts- in the pocketbook!

Conservatives just proved we have the power to make a dramatic difference. But Bud Light was just a warm-up act. The main event is President Donald J. Trump.

Trump was the greatest president of my lifetime. He created a remarkable boom economy, prosperity, record-setting middle class income growth, full employment, low taxes, low inflation and interest rates, and peace around the world. He also won the trade war with China. That’s called “The Trump Economic Miracle.”

Democrats hated Trump because of his success. He humiliated them. He proved their economic model is a failure. Democrats literally went insane with “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” That’s why they demonized, slandered and persecuted him for all four years of his term.

Now these same power-drunk Democrats, insane with rage and jealousy, have indicted and arrested Trump on false charges to try to stop him from winning again in 2024. New York was only the first blow. Georgia is up next. Then federal charges for mishandling classified documents. They’re throwing the kitchen sink at Trump. Simply because Trump is standing in the way of Democrats winning in 2024 and establishing one-party rule- so they can finish destroying America, American exceptionalism, capitalism and individualism (ie freedom).

If they can kill off Trump, there is no one standing in the way of their radical Marxist domination and tyranny.

That’s where we come in- conservatives, patriots, Americans with faith in God. The Silent Majority cannot afford to be silent anymore. We can apply our proven success with the Bud Light boycott to produce a much bigger event…

A one day “National Pro-Trump Economic Patriots Strike.”

For one day (as a start) we will stay home. No work, no shopping, no consumer spending, no driving, no kids in school. We will bring America to a halt. We will bring the US economy to a standstill. It will be like a national holiday.

But the key is everyone on the right has to “buy in.” Everyone. I will need every conservative TV and radio host to “buy in.” We all need to coordinate together. Like “We are the World.” Or “Live Aid.” Remember those events? Where every major music star in the world coordinated together to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for charity.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “We either hang together, or we will surely hang separately.” Every conservative, patriot and American with faith in God needs to be “all in” for Trump. Trump isn’t a politician. He is a symbol. If we let them destroy Trump, we are all next.

Every conservative TV and radio host has to agree on the date and promote this event. There can be no ego. This is about saving America from a communist takeover. This is about stopping the weaponization of government. We cannot let tyrannical Democrat tyrants destroy free speech, silence dissent, and persecute anyone who threatens their agenda. Because we all know what comes next.

If we coordinate as one…if we can put our egos aside…if we can motivate our base of 80 million Trump supporters (and I’ll bet it’s grown to 100 million because of Trump’s arrest)…we can show the world…the media…the radical left…the Biden administration…that we are the LOUD AND PROUD MAJORITY (no longer silent)…that we stand behind President Trump…that we will not stand for his persecution…that we will not accept the weaponization of government…that we have the consumer power to bring the powerful U.S. economy to a standstill.

As we just proved with Bud Light.

One day to show the world we love Trump…we love America…we love freedom and free speech…and we have the power. And we’re not going to take it anymore. We’re not going to let you destroy America.

So, conservatives, patriots, Christians, and Trump warriors- (in the words of boxing legend Michael Buffer) ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE?

  15. SOUTH AFRICA AT WAR WITH ITSELF
    layoftheland376996452 Environmetalism, Personal Observations/Reflections March 29, 2023 16 Minutes
Architect from Michigan, USA revisits his hometown of Cape Town and reflects on disturbing urban landscapes and its people still saddled with racism – but now in reverse

    By Michael Witkin

I travelled to Cape Town from the US after a long hiatus of ten years (2012) and was mortified of the degradation that had occurred over that period of time. Going back and seeing things, it seemed as though I was chasing the ghost of my elusive past; the ghost of something that I would no longer find. I have recollections of a place of seeping memories; another life, another dimension – a society that has decayed and encased itself, enabled by a corrupt and incompetent government out for self-enrichment. A government that has sucked the marrow from the very bones of South Africa.

Hovels, hoks [slang for makeshift dwellings] and hellholes line both sides of the national road to Cape Town from the airport. Corrugated tin, cardboard, black trash bags, petrol drums and burlap hobbled together with string and wire are used as building materials. Cape Town has always had shanties but now it was overwhelming and extended as far as the eye could see. This slum makes the favelas in Sao Paulo look luxurious by comparison. Smoke oozes out from a shanty saying, “this is my home, someone lives here.” A stray cow walks on the side of the road while an African child strolls with a herd of goats.

Tin Towns. Urban expansion in South Africa today usually means this – a shanty sprawl.
By welcome contrast, I gaze at the breathtaking Table Mountain and Lions Head bathed in radiant and iridescent light as the sun was setting. The sheer beauty and allure of Cape Town imparts a strong sense of place that cannot be found elsewhere in the world.

Then back to shards of jagged broken glass; like sharpened incisors gleaming, sparkling and ominous, embedded in mortar, forms the crown to three meter high concrete walls. Walls with unfurled shiny coils of threatening razor wire that forms the cloak of invincibility to the souls that live behind these high walls.

Sharpened steel rods, sword-like pikes topped with honed arrowheads and menacing barbs further celebrate and adorn these palisades. Stockades that have become houses of detention overflows with resentment and resignation.

Sign of the Times. Common sign outside properties warning the public of danger, it seems indicative of applying to the entire country. (photo M. Witkin)
“Danger–Gevaar–Ingozi” These are the words in English, Afrikaans and Zulu on signs with a red background and a crudely stenciled skull and crossbones that are now part of the urban fabric. Angle-iron bayonets affixed at an acute angle to the walls that support twelve strands of electrified wire, add further anguish to the painful broken glass crown and sinister cloak that safeguards, protects and shields those that are held hostage unto themselves. The streetscape and thoroughfares in residential neighborhoods have been transformed into hostile environments, devoid of people.

Designed to Deter. Appearing like modern sculpture, these sharp glass shards on high walls are not to attract interest but deter intruders.
It was the weekly garbage day. I peered over the balcony from the second floor of the apartment I was staying at. About ten large bins were hauled out to the sidewalk to be picked up. Within less than a minute a deluge of beggars besieged the bins systematically sorting through the detritus, debris and trash. They would neatly empty the bin then would stuff unidentifiable objects into their pockets and into plastic grocery bags slung over their necks and shoulders like bandoliers. This is commonplace as I saw numerous times poor people fishing in trash cans for something to eat. A crust of bread, spoilage or maybe find an item that could be sold.

Besides the non-existence of South African Airways, which was one of the finest airline companies in the world, the postal service is almost nonexistent. I know of someone who received her birthday card five months after the date. The postal workers rifle through the mail opening up letters and parcels and help themselves to whatever they can find. Most post offices in urban areas have closed permanently due to “unprofitability and crime” A number of post office properties were

  16. What Were These Family Members Doing to Receive This Money?” – Rep. James Comer with Maria Bartiromo on the Biden Family Money Laundering Schemes
By Joe Hoft Apr. 23, 2023 2:20 pm

Representative James Comer was on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo to discuss his recent revelations about the Biden family.

Rep. James Comer shared today with Maria Bartiroma that there are many more LLCs and many more countries involved in the Biden family money laundering schemes.

China is probably the most reputable country that the Biden family was dealing with. The question remains, what were these family members doing to receive this money?

There’s no rhyme or reason for some of these Biden family members to receive any type of payment from our adversaries around the world not including the number that we’ve uncovered and we’re still digging through these pay violations.

  18. LGBTQ Organization Cancels Florida Pride Parade Over Bill Banning Children From Lewd Adult Performances
    By Cassandra MacDonald Apr. 23, 2023 3:00 pm0 Comments

An LGBTQ organization has cancelled its planned Florida Pride Parade and “Kid Zone” over a bill banning children from attending lewd adult-oriented performances.
The organization was concerned that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis could sign Senate Bill 1438 into law before the event took place.

If the bill was signed into law before the event took place, and it was for all ages, the venue risked losing its liquor license and the organization could have lost its non-profit status. Anyone doing a lewd performance in drag in front of children would have been at risk of fines or jail time.

The legislation, which DeSantis is expected to sign, does not specifically state that drag performances in front of minors is banned, but defines “adult live performances” as “any show, exhibition, or other presentation in front of a live audience which, in whole

    By Cassandra MacDonald Apr. 23, 2023 3:40 pm106 Comments

A Georgia Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for the state’s House of Representatives has been arrested for kidnapping, cruelty to children, and aggravated assault.
The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office arrested Zephaniah Dwayne Baker on Saturday at approximately 12:45 a.m.

According to a report from Fox News, Baker had warrants out for felony charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault (disfigure), possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and misdemeanor charges of battery (Family Violence Act) and third-degree cruelty to children.

Details about his alleged crimes have not yet been publicly released.

The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted during the arrest by the Drug, Gang, and Fugitive Unit and U.S. Marshals.

Fox reports that “the investigation was conducted in conjunction with the FBI, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, Cobb County Police Department, Russell County Sheriff’s Office and Phenix City Police Department.”

Baker has run for multiple offices over the years, most recently losing a primary election for the Georgia House of Representatives on May 24, 2022.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, “Baker ran for mayor of Columbus three times, losing to Teresa Tomlinson in 2010, and dropping out of the race she later won in 2014. He finished in second place in 2018 coming about 6,000 votes short of the current mayor, Skip Henderson.”

Crowd-sourced data analysis filled the gap because the CDC is not empowered to respond to health crises at a Federal level. Volunteers collected data from each of the websites that our 56 states plus territories manage. A volunteer describes his excitment and exhaustion in the fight against Covid: one night my state reported 30 dead so we were able to create a complete daily picture of the breadth of the pandemic using data from all the states!!!!
