  1. “…The revisiting of definitions is the beginning of wisdom…”.

Saturday I attended a gathering of like-minded friends. We enjoyed good food, weather and conversation. At one point we agreed the word “capitalism” was a derogatory Marxist invention. Capital, itself, is a good thing. In fact it competes with Love in making the world go ’round. It is this little “ism” bit that makes capital stinky. Oddly, the “ism” at the end of “collective” does not seem to do quite as much stigmatic damage to its respective word.

Here is a 2 hr. 25 min. interview with Anthony Deden from 2018. I have had it book marked on my computer since then, because I found it so profound. Deden seeks no attention. He quietly manages the wealth of a limited number of families. This is the only interview of him that I recall finding. I wish I knew what he thought of things today. His ambit of interest is the preservation of wealth of his clients primarily using European and North American markets. He is modest, ever self-questioning, and wise. He says his greatest epiphany came when he realized the whole of the financial markets was a lie. Everything was a lie. Yet, rather than retreat into the self-defeating and hence self-destructive nihilism that has descended upon so many lost souls in our politically-saturated world, Deden retreated into a search for what was true and real. The result was a fortified position based not on the temporal regard for return on capital, but rather the enduring regard for return of capital.

I admit this interview changed the way I saw money.

    • THE WORLD BANK – Ukraine Recovery and Reconstruction Needs Estimated $349 Billion

BRUSSELS, September 9, 2022—In a joint assessment released today, the Government of Ukraine, the European Commission, and the World Bank, in cooperation with partners, estimate that the current cost of reconstruction and recovery in Ukraine amounts to $349 billion (€349 Billion). This figure is expected to grow in the coming months as the war continues.

The Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) presents the first comprehensive evaluation of war impacts across twenty different sectors following the Russian invasion. It also lays out the financing needs for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable recovery and reconstruction and provides a roadmap for planning.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, said: “Ukraine is fighting for democracy and our common values. The EU cannot match the sacrifice Ukraine is enduring but we are mobilising all our instruments to address the most immediate needs, including for housing for internally displaced populations and to repair critical infrastructure. Since the start of Russia’s brutal and illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, the EU has mobilised 10 billion euro in financing, humanitarian, emergency and military assistance for Ukraine and another 5 billion euros in financing are in the pipeline. The EU will walk every step of the way with Ukraine to rebuild a democratic, independent and prosperous country on its path to the EU.”

“With joint efforts, we have already started reconstruction in the de-occupied Ukrainian territories, but reconstruction requires a comprehensive approach and the mobilization of joint resources of the Ukrainian government and international partners. The assessment of the destruction and the identification of reconstruction needs creates a solid basis for the national Reconstruction Plan and is a prerequisite for effective financing. After all, only for the first stage, rapid recovery, $17 billion is needed, of which Ukraine needs $3.4 billion already this year,” said Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.

The assessment covers the impacts of the war sustained between February 24 and June 1, 2022, and found that physical damage from the war reached over $97 billion. It was particularly high in the housing, transport, commerce and industry sectors. The destruction was concentrated in the Chernihivska, Donetska, Luhanska, Kharkivska, Kyivska, and Zaporizka oblasts.

The RDNA results are preliminary, and damage and needs should be considered as minimums.

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to exact a terrible toll, from significant civilian casualties and the displacement of millions of people to the widespread destruction of homes, businesses, social institutions, and economic activity,” said Anna Bjerde, World Bank Regional Vice President for Europe and Central Asia. “The Government of Ukraine now faces the difficult task of balancing recovery with the country’s immediate needs, including core public services such as health, education and social protection, which are critical to preventing further deterioration in living conditions and poverty in Ukraine. The RDNA will help in identifying priorities for recovery while we continue to support the continuation of essential core services.”

The report found that recovery and reconstruction needs across social, productive, and infrastructure sectors total $349 billion, which is more than 1.5 times the 2021 GDP of Ukraine. Over the next 36 months the RDNA assesses that $105 billion is needed to address urgent needs such as restoring education and health systems and infrastructure, preparing for the upcoming winter through restoration of heating and energy to homes, support to agriculture, and repair of vital transport routes. The safe management of debris and explosives, including landmines, also pose a substantial cost.

The Government of Ukraine is looking at the specific needs across the different regions ahead of the winter. Based on the highest priorities, tailored recovery and reconstruction plans are being developed to guide a program in each area.

The World Bank and the European Commission confirmed their continued support for the Government of Ukraine. Given the ongoing war, there will be a need for future assessments of damage, loss and reconstruction/recovery needs in Ukraine. The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) has committed financial support for this purpose.

The Ukraine RDNA full report can be downloaded here (Ukrainian version full report downloadable here). Summary reports: English version, Ukrainian version.

The RDNA benefited from the generous support of the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s Good Governance Fund; the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR); the United States Government, including the State Department; and the Swiss Government through the Sustaining Health Sector Reforms in Ukraine Trust Fund, supported by the Swiss Development Cooperation.

reuters – Rebuilding Ukraine after Russian invasion may cost $350 bln, experts say

Russia’s invasion caused over $97 billion in direct damages to Ukraine through June 1, but it could cost nearly $350 billion to rebuild the country, a report released Friday by the World Bank, Ukrainian government and European Commission shows.

It said Ukraine had also suffered $252 billion in losses through disruptions to its economic flows and production, as well as extra expenses linked to the war, while the displacement of one-third of all Ukrainians was expected to jack up its poverty rate to 21% from just 2% before the war.

Overall, the report estimated Ukraine’s reconstruction needs would reach $349 billion, as of June 1, or about 1.6 times the country’s $200 billion gross domestic product in 2021.

Of that amount, $105 billion was needed in the short term to address urgent priorities, such as rebuilding thousands of damaged or destroyed schools and over 500 hospitals. It was also imperative to prepare for the upcoming, likely brutal winter by repairing homes and restoring heating, and purchasing gas.

All the numbers were preliminary and would likely rise as the war continued, the report noted.

“The impact of the invasion will be felt for generations, with families displaced and separated, disruptions to human development, destruction of intrinsic cultural heritage and reversal of a positive economic and poverty trajectory,” it said.

Arup Banerji, World Bank regional country director for Eastern Europe, said the findings were based on a “very strong” internationally accepted methodology, and should underpin a Group of Seven recovery conference planned in Berlin on Oct. 25.

He said Ukraine’s initial estimates that it would cost $750 billion to rebuild its economy were likely extrapolations from the damage and economic losses, but it was unclear what exact methodology had been used to arrive at that estimate, he said.

The report offered the first comprehensive damage assessment of the war’s impact on Ukraine and laid the groundwork for funding its recovery plan, Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said in a posting on Telegram.

Oleg Ustenko, a senior economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said Ukraine needed commitments from donor countries that they would continue to provide $5 billion in funding each month throughout next year.

Banerji agreed that Ukraine would need external support through 2023, unless there was a some “really drastic change in the course of the war.”

He said the economy was doing “slightly better” than feared, and its gross domestic product was now seen shrinking by 30-35% in 2022 instead of the 45% contraction forecast initially.

Banerji said the report had factored in the investments needed to “build back better” and help Ukraine modernize its Soviet-era infrastructure.

He cautioned that the pace of reconstruction would depend to a large extent on the course of the war, and the ability of the Ukrainian public and private sector to absorb the funding.

“If you think of the enormous cost of housing, this will actually take many years, realistically, to be rebuilt and repaired,” he said.

  5. Right-Wing Sweden Democrats Triumph in Historic Vote! More Mail-In Ballots Incoming!

The right-wing Sweden Democrats look to be the big winner in Sweden’s Sunday elections, even as counting threatens to drag on all week due to absentee ballots and irregularities.

With 6,244 out of 6,578 districts reporting, the patriotic Sweden Democrats are up 3.1% over the last elections to 20.7%, making them the biggest winner, and biggest party in the conservative bloc, which currently holds 49.7% of the vote, with 48.8% for the left-wing parties.

With 175 seats out of 349 in the Riksdag, this would put the conservative parties over the top to form a right-wing government, something traditionally socialist Sweden has not seen since 2014 – or really ever. The Social Democrats (currently at 30.5%) ruled Sweden from 1932 to 1976, and 1982 to 2006, followed by a center-right government around the Moderate and Conservative parties 2006 to 2014.

Now the Moderates have fallen behind the populist Sweden Democrats at 19.1% in current tallies, possibly opening the way for patriot Jimmie Åkesson to become next Prime Minister of “socialist paradise” Sweden, which would trigger an absolute earthquake in Europe.

SEPTEMBER 09 2022 – TIME – COVID-19 Boosters Help Keep People Out of the Hospital, Study Finds

As new Omicron-specific boosters become available in the U.S., a study published today in JAMA Internal Medicine emphasizes the importance and success of boosters in keeping people infected with COVID-19 out of the hospital.

The researchers analyzed data from more than 192,000 adults in 13 U.S. states who had been hospitalized with COVID-19 between January and April 2022 —when the original Omicron variant was at its peak. During this time, unvaccinated people were 10.5 times more likely to be hospitalized than people who had been fully vaccinated and boosted (with the original version of the booster). People who were vaccinated but not boosted were 2.5 times more likely to end up in the hospital than those who had received a booster.

This “underscores the importance” of boosters in preventing hospitalizations, serious illness, and death, the study authors write. The researchers call on clinicians and public-health practitioners to “continue to promote vaccination with all recommended doses for eligible persons.”

Only about 48% of eligible people in the U.S. have received a first booster shot, according to the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And while 80% of people in the U.S. have received at least one dose of the vaccine, this isn’t enough to provide adequate protection against severe infection. Studies from researchers and COVID-19 vaccine makers suggest that the protection provided by the vaccines wanes over time. As the findings from one Moderna study suggest, vaccine-induced immunity is likely strongest soon after people get their recommended two doses of the vaccine, and starts to weaken after that.

In the new study, those who were hospitalized and fully vaccinated were predominantly people over 58 years old. They were also more likely to have at least three underlying medical conditions and to be residents in long-term care facilities—suggesting that people with weaker immune systems do not gain the same amount of protection against COVID-19 as healthy people from vaccines and past infections. They also are more vulnerable to severe infection. Getting a booster helped improve protection for all age groups, including this one.

The study “gives further support for adults ages 65 years and older to stay up to date with their COVID-19 vaccination,” says the study’s lead author and CDC medical officer Fiona Havers. Other measures are also important to help protect against hospitalization of older or other vulnerable individuals, “such as early access to antiviral medications if eligible, improving ventilation, getting tested, and wearing a mask,” she says.

The researchers also found that Black and Hispanic patients were less likely to be vaccinated than white patients. “Given the racial and ethnic disparities seen throughout the pandemic, the association between race and ethnicity and vaccination status among hospitalized cases should be monitored closely,” the researchers write.

On Sept. 1, the CDC authorized new Omicron-specific shots developed by Moderna (available to adults 18 years and older) and Pfizer-BioNTech (for people ages 12 and up). Though data in humans have not yet been published, public-health experts believe the new booster—which replaces the old one—will be an important way to confer continued protection. “If you are eligible,” said CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky in a recent statement, “there is no bad time to get your COVID-19 booster and I strongly encourage you to receive it.”

EU response to COVID-19: preparing for autumn and winter 2023

      1. INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 summer wave, driven by Omicron BA.4 and BA.5, reminded us very clearly that the pandemic is not yet over. Between the beginning of June and the middle of July1, the EU/EEA saw a tripling of COVID-19 cases.

Since then, case numbers have been falling again, but remain high among people aged 65 years and over, with consequent increases in hospitalisation rates and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions in this age group

. Overall, more than 2 300 people still die every week in the EU/EEA of COVID-19.

These numbers are worrying not least since they are likely to be an underestimation of the real situation and they do not account for repercussions such as long-COVID, as well as the impact of the pandemic on mental health.

In addition, all countries have lifted most restrictions and their populations are experiencing pandemic fatigue, which can lead to changes in behaviour.

These factors make it easier for the virus to circulate rapidly in the EU and this opens the door to new variants emerging that could evade immunity, spread more easily or cause more severe disease.

It is therefore possible that the costly gains made in response to the pandemic could be lost if the virus is not controlled and further infections are not prevented.

In many Member States, the mandatory use of face masks in healthcare settings and long-term care facilities is still in place.

Their use in closed public spaces, including public transport, can be a first option to limit community transmission.

Recent evidence shows that FFP2 face masks, which are readily available in the EU/EEA, have a stronger protective effect than medical masks or cloth masks in the community.

Member States are therefore strongly encouraged to consider their use in specific settings

  8. BOMBSHELL! THOUSANDS OF What Appear To Be ABSENTEE BALLOTS Are Loaded Into A Minivan with Indiana Plates at Detroit Satellite Voting Center Several Hours After Polls Closed On Election Day 2020 [VIDEO]

On the evening of the 2020 election, a full 3 hours and 15 minutes after the polls closed in Michigan, a white male dressed in a white shirt and black pants can be seen on drop box surveillance footage at the Heilmann Satellite Voting Center in Detroit working with a black male dressed all in black to load what appears to be thousands of absentee ballots into a minivan with Indiana license plates.

The two men are seen rolling a flatbed filled with 13 postal trays used to transfer ballots in Detroit, 3 large (heavy) storage containers, and a large filled blue bag with red straps (we believe this bag was used to transfer ballots from satellite voting centers, potentially to the Detroit City Clerk’s office), and two open boxes filled with absentee ballots into the back of a black minivan that is backed up next to the drop box. It should be mentioned that, according to a thorough examination of the surveillance tapes by MC4EI, a scant total of 95 ballots were deposited throughout the day on Election Day, and only ONE ballot was dropped off after 6 pm on Election Day—so, where is this massive haul of ballots coming from?

  9. 50 Million People Stuck In ‘Modern Slavery’: UN

    ADDS ILO chief quotes

Fifty million people around the world are trapped in forced labour or forced marriage, the UN said Monday, warning that their ranks had swelled dramatically in recent years.

The United Nations had set a goal to eradicate all forms of modern slavery by 2030, but the number of people caught up in forced labour or forced marriage ballooned by 10 million between 2016 and 2021, according to a new report.

The study by the UN’s agencies for labour and migration along with the Walk Free Foundation found that at the end of last year, 28 million people were in forced labour and 22 million living in a marriage they had been forced into.

That means nearly one out of every 150 people in the world are caught up in modern forms of slavery, the report said.

The Covid-19 pandemic, which worsened conditions and swelled debt levels for many workers, has heightened the risk, the report found.

Voluntarily limiting Russia’s special operation was done for the right reasons related to humanitarian and political goals, but it unwittingly prevented the military success of this campaign upon which those two aforementioned objectives’ success is dependent, thus making last weekend’s outcome inevitable.

    • M. K. Bhadrakumar:
Russian regrouping in Kharkov will speed up Battle of Donbass

The New York Times has disclosed that the US shared vital intelligence with the Ukrainian military and took part in the preparation of the latter’s current “counteroffensive” near Kharkov. No matter the Biden Administration’s motivations in publicising its role in what western media is celebrating as a success story – presumably, with an eye on domestic politics in America – it could be factually correct. The media leak puts the dramatic happenings in the past 3-4 days in proper perspective.

There are two ways of looking at the surge by the Ukrainian military: one, Kiev has inflicted a heavy defeat on the Russians and forced them to retreat, or, the American intelligence finally got wind of the unobtrusive thinning out of the Russian frontline in Kharkov that had been going on in the recent weeks as part of a larger re-deployment of military formations, and shared the intelligence with Kiev, who of course gleefully acted on it…

      Terrific article.

      • But it almost presumes Kiev calls its own shots, which cannot be the case given its western financiers, who will soon come under intense political pressure because of failing domestic economic policies.

        • It would be a whole lot better if Kiev military was calling the shots.

Their people have the right training, know the territory, know their enemy. Their instincts are far keener than anything we bring to the field.

We think our tech-gizmos and U$Ds buy us supremacy sufficient to call the shots. And maybe they will. But it’s a steep learning curve that’s slippery with blood.

          • Or…extending the war to inflict max damage on western economies is the objective of our own collectivist “betters”, with their ultimate prize being domestic division and strife. “Winning” assumes a different meaning when other objectives, such as enrichment for the well-positioned few, and imposing a new economic paradigm on all, is considered.

    • Russian teachers detained by Ukrainian military in liberated territories. They face up to 12 years in prison

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said that schoolteachers were detained in settlements liberated from the Russian army. They had arrived in the occupied territories to work in local schools according to Russian educational programs.

Vereshchuk is quoted by Strana as saying they will be tried under Article 438 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (violation of laws and customs of war). This article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of eight to twelve years.

      • It’s an amazing history lesson.
Reviewing logistics maps from 1941 then 1943-44 – but from the perspective of the Russians. Our military history texts were informed by German debriefings, put into the context of their Prussian forebears.

Comparing generals Petraeus, Milley, or Austin to Russian professionals is sobering. For the last decade our military academies have deteriorated even from their wretched inadequacy. Then you listen to think-tankers, like those from Nato’s Atlantic Council, and it’s Wunderwaffen word salad.

  13. Prez Z on Telegram – Google translate:

“Even through the impenetrable darkness, Ukraine and the civilized world clearly see these terrorist acts. Deliberate and cynical missile strikes on civilian critical infrastructure. No military facilities. Kharkiv and Donetsk regions were cut off. In Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Sumy there are partial problems with power supply.

Do you still think that we are ‘one people’? Do you still think that you can scare us, break us, make us make concessions? You really did not understand anything? Don’t understand who we are? What are we for? What are we talking about? Lip reading:

Without gas or without you? Without you. Without light or without you? Without you. Without water or without you? Without you. Without food or without you? Without you. Cold, hunger, darkness and thirst are not as scary and deadly for us as your ‘friendship and brotherhood’. But history will put everything in its place. And we will be with gas, light, water and food.. and WITHOUT you!”

  14. Telegram noise: Armenian-Azerbaijan flare.

“The Azerbaijani authorities claim that Armenia has launched large-scale provocations against the armed forces of Azerbaijan, therefore, Azerbaijani military personnel are conducting intense fire on Armenian positions”

Armenian Defense Ministry: “On the night of September 13, units of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces opened intense fire from artillery and large-caliber firearms at Armenian positions in the direction of the settlements of Goris, Sotk and Jermuk. The enemy also uses UAVs.”

The Azerbaijani Armed Forces are currently launching missile attacks on Armenian military facilities. With the mediation of the Russian side, a preliminary agreement was reached on a ceasefire at 02:30.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Pashinyan had informed Putin about the situation with Azerbaijan and called for a “response from the international community”

Pashinyan and Putin agreed to stay in contact.

It is reported that Pashinyan made a call with Macron to discuss the current aggressive action taken by Azerbaijan. Macron has stated that the current situation is “unacceptable” and encourages the halting of all hostilities.
