Reporting on communism, without knowing or understanding it is communism

One of the most important books on communism in America, was first published in 1952, by a former communist named, Whitaker Chambers. The book attempts to do three things. Explain communism, the growth and nature of communism in America, and give a thriller-novel account of Whitaker’s own escape from communism, and his conversion to freedom and Christianity.

Whitaker Chambers you see, was one of a few of the most important witnesses at the most important trial of a communist in American history. The trial was of Alger Hiss. Mr. Hiss you see, was passing critical US strategic materials to the Soviet Union at the end of WW2, and goes to explain how the Soviets ended up with so much territory after the war.

But what reminded me of his book from this video, is how early in the book, Whitaker writes about a meeting he was at in the US of a visiting communist official from the Soviet Union. A lecture in fact. And in that lecture, the Soviet official explained to his American communist audience, and I am paraphrasing from memory, so best if you all get the book and read it yourselves, ‘The word communism has an unpleasant taste to the American senses. So we will use other terms. Terms like, Socialism. Or progressive.’

The idea being of course that they could sell and impose communism on Americans, so long as they called it something else. Trudeau is a master of that obviously. But watching the clip above, its hard not to think in terms of pure communism and Soviet level speech and thought control which has been imposed now in the American heartland and no one seems to have noticed its just rebranded communism.

Addendum:

This site has been tracking the territory ceded to communists for over a decade now. And several important benchmark moments come to mind.

One was when a single gay man called a radio station and complained about a line in the Dire Straights song, Money for Nothing. The song itself was mocking hetero-working class men. It pretended to speak for blue collar men who mocked guitar culture. And in it, the stereotype being mocked said: “Look at that faggot”. The gay man objected to the use of the word, and not that the context should matter, but irrespective of the context, complained. The song was pulled and Mark Knopfler released another version without that word.

A singer was arrested in the UK for singing the pop hit, Kung Fu Fighting while not being Chinese.

A man was arrested also in the UK for calling a police horse “gay”.

We cede territory to the offended constantly. In a rough way, its analogous to the tragedy of the commons. Except its the tragedy of the intellectual commons. Leftists have taken over the common grazing territory of our minds and increasingly determine exactly what may graze in them. More exactly, the left will determine what YOU mean by what YOU say in the commons. And then will determine that what you said was criminal, irrespective of what you meant. Ultimately, only the thoughts of the revolution will be permitted, and that will always be changing. What was leading edge today, will be an actual crime tomorrow, as the revolution pushes forward. And, as must be the case with all laws based on lies and fictions, the full force of the state must be used to make it continue. Because the farther away the official view of reality is from reality itself, the higher the cost of maintaining it to the individual. So the threat must be enormous by the state.
