Reader’s Links for February 3, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. “Joe and Jill Biden join Democrats and Republicans to mourn slain Capitol cop Brian Sicknick, 42, as he lies in honor in building he was defending from MAGA rioters when he was murdered”
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9217377/Joe-Jill-Biden-pay-respects-Officer-Brian-Sicknick-lies-honor-Capitol.html

“No more evidence is needed to prove just how egregious the press has become during the Trump era, than comparing how the news outlets who are presently gaslighting the killing of Officer Sicknick.

To how these very same media outlets covered the equally horrifying murder of retired St. Louis Police Captain David Dorn during the Breonna Taylor BLM/ANTIFA riots.

The keywords used by the liberal-bias media reporting on Officer Sicknick’s death center around using the words “Trump”, “MAGA”, “Riots”, “Rioting”, and “Coup”.

Not surprisingly, many of these news media reporting on Officer Sicknick’s death at the hands of Trump-supporters failed to write a single word about Capt. Dorn being murdered at the hands of BLM supporters.

The few media outlets that actually did cover David Dorn’s murder used keywords such as “peaceful protests”, “robbery”, “St. Louis”, and “Retired Police Captain”.”

  2. “…how did you go bankrupt?”
“Well, slowly at first, then all of a sudden…”
And so the ship of State entered its troubled waters as its bough began to rise.
“…But they told me we could just print the money we needed,” said Dear Leader, sucking on a grape-flavoured lollypop, his shoeless feet fidgeting in their favorite little socks.
“No. Uh-uh,” said the homeless man who had wandered in from the street. “–Doesn’t work that way, but they always try.”
“And what makes you an expert?” Dear Leader asked as he picked his nose and ate it, like a four-year old.
“I was an economist at the Bank of Canada.”
    “Oh.”
“Yeah,” said the homeless man. He adjusted his scarf around his collar. The cold was deep in his bones, now, and he just couldn’t get warm.
“And how did you go bankrupt, yourself?” Dear Leader asked.
“Well, slowly at first, then all of a sudden. See, I was part of the economy that didn’t really contribute much despite all the theories I so strongly believed in. We didn’t contribute anything to the country’s real wealth, which in the end pulled us down.”
    “And which part was this?”
    “Government.”
“And what part of the economy was that?” Dear Leader craned his neck so he could see himself in the mirror behind the bar. He adjusted his collar.
“I just told you. The public sector.”
“Wonderful. It’s so nice to meet a real person! I try hard to work for all Canadians no matter their gender, race, or religion. We are all Team Canada! Now, you’ll have to excuse me because I must catch a flight to the Aga Khan’s island.”
“Nice socks,” said the homeless economist. He then coughed a deep cough as a river of pneumonic phlegm erupted from deep in his lungs.
“Yay!” squealed Dear Leader. His hands and fingers splayed as he clapped with furious glee like a little circus seal who has just been rewarded.

“Pakistani police on Wednesday raided a suspected hideout of an outlawed separatist group in eastern Punjab province, triggering a shootout that killed three insurgents, authorities said.

According to a statement by Kamran Hussain, an official with the counter-terrorism department, officers also seized a cache of weapons allegedly belonging to “terrorists from the outlawed Baluchistan Republican Army.” The group is known for targeting Pakistani troops, police and gas pipelines in southwestern Baluchistan province.

Baluchistan has been the scene of a low-level insurgency by Baluch separatists who want a greater share of province gas and mineral revenue. Although authorities often say they have quelled the insurgency in Baluchistan, violence has continued there.”

  4. UN report: Widespread torture of detainees in Afghan prisons (abcnews, Feb 3, 2021)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/high-torture-detainees-afghanistan-continues-75655151

“Nearly a third of all detainees held in Afghan detention centers say they have suffered some form of torture or ill-treatment, a new U.N. report said Wednesday.

According to the “Torture Report,” more than half of the allegations are from southern Kandahar province, a Taliban heartland. The United Nations expressed serious concerns about the claims, including allegations of “enforced disappearances.”

For the report, conducted jointly by the U.N. mission to Afghanistan and the U.N. Human Rights Office, U.N. officials interviewed a total of 656 detainees, held in 63 government facilities across the country, between January 2019 and March 2020.

The alleged torture included beatings, suffocation, and electric shocks. The U.N. says 30% of those interviewed provided “credible and reliable” accounts of abuse and mistreatment.

Afghan officials did not immediately respond to Associated Press calls for comment on the U.N. report. Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, U.N. visits to the detention facilities were suspended last March.

The U.S.-backed Afghan government is holding thousands of detainees, many of them captured as part of the ongoing war with the Taliban, who are mainly ethnic Pashtun.

The Taliban have stepped up their offensive, making major gains in recent years, and now effectively control over half the country. Separately, widespread corruption and distrust of the government has undermined efforts to combat the Taliban.

The insurgents, meanwhile, have been demanding the release of thousand more Taliban prisoners, under a deal signed between the Taliban and the U.S. government last year that saw 5,000 insurgents freed. The U.S.-Taliban deal aims to end the decades-long war and facilitate the withdrawal of U.S. and international troops from Afghanistan. The Biden administration has said it plans to review the U.S.-Taliban deal.

The report said 30.3% of detainees reported torture or mistreatment, down from 31.9 % during the previous reporting period, from 2017 to 2018.

“Perpetrators must be held accountable,” said Deborah Lyons, the U.N.’s special representative for Afghanistan. “This would increase confidence in the rule of law and can be a contributing factor towards peace,” said Lyons.

“Torture can never be justified. It has lasting consequences for victims, their families, and society,” she added.

In Kandahar, 57.7% of detainees held in a police facility reported abuse. Nearly 50% of all prisoners detained by Afghan forces claim that they were asked to sign or thumbprint a document without knowing its content, said the report.

The U.N. mission does not have access to Taliban detention facilities or those of other antigovernment elements. The report only includes accusations from prisoners in detention centers of the Afghan government.”

Cringeworthy segment erupts on Newsmax TV with pillow maven Mike Lindell

Newsmax meltdown: Anchors Heather Childers and Bob Sellers encounter guest Mike Lindell. Newsmax video via Twitter

Fortunately, blogger Bonchie, covering this for RedState, is one who gets it. The battle-stations intervention by the Newsmax host (Bob Sellers) when Mike Lindell, CEO of My Pillow, launched into a speech about Dominion voting machines, was about lawsuits.

Says Bonchie: “Lindell starts talking about voting machines and election fraud during a segment he was likely warned not to. Newsmax, who is being targeted by Dominion for defamation, and the hosts of the show weren’t very happy about the detour. That’s certainly understandable.”

Trending: Dems go ballistic over tweet inciting violence against Cuomo admin. Just one problem

Folks on social media were furious with Newsmax. That too is understandable, although I’m not sure the furious understand that with Newsmax, the vulnerability margin is really thin, and the danger of being utterly destroyed is real. Fox News can fall back on the revenue from other divisions of the Fox corporation — and obviously does so, as the advertising on Fox News Channel has been reduced significantly in the last few years. That’s visible to the casual viewer; I’m sure it’s one of the main things on the minds of Fox News company officials. Newsmax has no such fallback from a diversified parent.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is stepping down as the company’s CEO.

Jeff Bezos is going the route of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Larry Page, ceding the CEO responsibilities of a powerhouse company in full stride: Amazon has reached new heights of influence and relevance amid our pandemic-driven locked-down lives. For Bezos, it’s been more than a quarter-century of shattering the status quo in everything from how we buy everyday items to how we interact with the gadgets in our homes.

Buried a few paragraphs into the company’s blowout fourth-quarter report Tuesday was the announcement that Bezos, the world’s second-wealthiest man behind Elon Musk, would step down as CEO to become executive chairman in the third quarter. In his place will be one of his key lieutenants, Andy Jassy, who runs the highly profitable Amazon Web Services business. The elevation of an Amazon veteran should ensure a smooth transition — not that Bezos is likely to be completely hands-off with the business.

Newly released background check data from January shows Americans are buying guns at a “blistering pace,” a firearms expert said.

“That’s undoubtedly connected to President Joe Biden’s plans to attack the firearm industry by undoing and rewriting regulations and executive actions to target the firearm industry,” Mark Olivia, director of public affairs at the National Shooting Sports Foundation, said in a statement.

Olivia pointed to the Biden administration freezing the publication of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s “Fair Access” banking rule, and promises to try and repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act to tighten restrictions on gun licenses, and to ban AR-15 style rifles.

The White House didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Wednesday that he and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) have finally reached an agreement on a power-sharing resolution.

The move allows Democrats to take control of committees, which they would have been locked out of without a deal.

“I am happy to report this morning that the leadership of both parties have finalized the organizing resolution for the Senate. We will pass the resolution through the Senate today, which means that committees can promptly set up and get to work with Democrats holding the gavels,” the New York Democrat said on the floor of the Senate.

Schumer added that he’s “confident our members are ready to hit the ground running on the most important issues facing our country.”

An agreement between the two Senate leaders is required to figure out how power would be divided as the upper chamber has a 50-50 split. Vice President Kamala Harris is able to break ties.

Forgotten in the wake of January 6.

In the furor over the January 6 riot, which Sen. Mitt Romney called an “insurrection incited by the president of the United States,” a more serious assault on the Capitol has been overlooked. For those who weren’t around or may have forgotten, here’s what went down on the evening of November 7, 1983.

“Listen carefully, I’m only going to tell you this one time,” a caller from the “Armed Resistance Unit,” told the operator at the Capitol switchboard. “There is a bomb in the Capitol building. It will go off in five minutes. Evacuate the building.” A Senate document, “Bomb Explodes in Capitol,” describes what happened.

The caller warned that “a bomb had been placed near the chamber in retaliation for recent U.S. military involvement in Grenada and Lebanon.” At 10:58 p.m. “a thunderous explosion tore through the second floor of the Capitol’s north wing.” The device, hidden under a bench at the eastern end of the corridor outside the Senate chamber, “blew off the door to the office of Democratic Leader Robert C. Byrd. The blast also punched a potentially lethal hole in a wall partition sending a shower of pulverized brick, plaster, and glass into the Republican cloakroom.” The adjacent halls were virtually deserted, so “many lives had been spared.”

A reflection on what the Democrats did for Hillary in the 2016 primaries.

Buried underneath the reams of data, statistical analysis and affidavits that put the Democrats’ win in the recent presidential election in serious question, lies one salient fact:

The Democrats planned to rig that election regardless of whether Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton won in 2016, because the Democrats were rigging the 2016 primaries for Clinton.

Project Veritas revealed the Democrats’ scam that year in a two-part video series, “Rigging the Election.” The series not only shows how paid agitators attempted to disrupt Trump’s campaign, as FrontPage Magazine reported in “Capturing the False Flag.” It uncovers schemes to register ineligible voters and transport non-residents into neighboring states to vote.

They believe recognizing your mistakes is self-forgiveness.

With Antony Blinken confirmed by the US Senate as the new Secretary of State, some analysts hope US policy in Syria will not revert to what it was when Obama was in office. This came in the wake of reports that US tanks had rolled back into Syria a few days ago, reversing Trump’s policy of ending military involvement in that conflict.

The fiasco of Obama’s Syria policy benefited no one involved and served no US interest. The Syrian people paid the highest price for this tragedy. ISIS managed to crush all Assad’s opposition, as it turned a vast area in Iraq and Syria into an Islamic state, while many of the US’s traditional allies turned a blind eye.

  23. Antifa’s True Goals and Tactics Exposed: Andy Ngo

Antifa is both an ideology and a movement that uses intimidation and violence to oppose capitalism and anybody who disagrees with its far-left, anarchist political agenda, says journalist Andy Ngo, an expert on the anarcho-communist group.

In September 2020, FBI Director Christopher Wray described Antifa as more of an ideological movement than an organization.

“Antifa is a real thing. It’s not a group or an organization. It’s a movement, or an ideology may be one way of thinking of it,” Wray said, acknowledging that Antifa does have “small groups,” or “nodes.”

But Ngo told The Epoch Times in an interview with the “Crossroads” program that Antifa is “more than an idea. It’s also a movement.” It has networks of organizations, and some of them are organized into formal groups, he said.

One of its groups is Rose City Antifa, “the oldest Antifa organization in the U.S.,” which is based in Portland, Oregon, the epicenter of the movemen

Matt Braynard, former director of Data and Strategy for President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, told The Epoch Times that charges against the non-violent protesters at the Capitol Building on Jan. 6 should be dropped.

“Anybody that engaged in any violence on January 6, who may have assaulted a police officer or committed serious property damage or vandalism should face serious charges,” Braynard said.

“However, the vast majority of those people have not been charged with such crimes. They’ve been charged with simply walking through an open door to a public building, with no knowledge or no reason to expect that it would be illegal or forbidden.”

Braynard sent an open letter (pdf) to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) on Jan. 29, requesting them to drop all charges against non-violent protesters and not use “those few bad apples as an excuse to persecute the peaceful Trump supporters.”

In the open letter, Braynard pointed out that these charges require a “mens rea” (mental state) of “knowingly entering” a federal building without permission.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Monday announced the ouster of hundreds of members of the Pentagon’s advisory boards, in a sweeping move that affects a series of last-minute appointees by the Trump administration, according to a Department of Defense (DOD) memo.

Austin wrote in a memo (pdf) on Saturday that all members of 31 Pentagon advisory boards would be fired, effective Feb. 16. Additionally, a total of 40 advisory boards listed in the memo are to be subjected to a “zero-based review,” which will involve an “in-depth business case of every sponsored advisory committee, supported by fact-based evidence for [its] continued utilization,” a process that could lead to their future dissolution and dismissal of members.

“As an interim step, I am directing the immediate suspension of all advisory committee operations until the review is completed unless otherwise directed by myself or the Deputy Secretary of Defense,” Austin wrote, with the memo indicating various deadlines for the completion of the “zero-based review,” ranging from Feb. 26 to April 30.

  26. ctv news – Canada adds Proud Boys to terror list

OTTAWA — The federal government is adding 13 new extremist groups, including the Proud Boys, to the Criminal Code list of terrorist entities, freezing their assets and opening up people who are affiliated with them to criminal sanctions.

In addition to several al Qaeda and Daesh affiliates as well as one new international terror group being added to the list, the federal government is moving to list four ideologically motivated violent extremist (IMVE) organizations.

    They are:

    Atomwaffen Division;
    Russian Imperial Movement;
    Proud Boys; and
    The Base

All four of these groups have called for, or engaged in acts of violence against those who are perceived to be opposed to their ideology and political beliefs, says the government.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair announced the move on Wednesday, highlighting the concern these extremist groups raise for Canadians. The government considers IMVE a “growing threat” and steps will be taken to remove any online content from these entities or their sympathizers.

  27. Democrats Fear Democracy
    Betsy Dorminey
    6-7 minutes

Every now and then insight strikes like a bolt from the blue, and suddenly everything is clear. That’s how it hit me on a recent rainy morning: Democrats have no faith in the democratic process. They seem to believe, with the late, great H. L. Mencken, that “Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance,” and that “As democracy is perfected, the office of the president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” And Democrats say, “Never again!”

This explains why the second impeachment of Donald Trump is so important to Democrats: they’re terrified the idiot electorate will vote the Bad Orange Man into office again. He must be disqualified, banned from holding elective office! They don’t like to acknowledge it, but even after all the dubious absentee and mail-in ballots were counted and recounted, Biden’s win was a squeaker, not a landslide. Extraordinary measures were required in the $470 million Georgia runoff to nudge the Senate to the tipping point, and Republicans actually gained seats in the House. So obviously voters can’t be trusted to do the right thing in the future. If you’re not sure you can win the game fair and square, get your opponent disqualified.

This theory also fits with a host of other issues on which the Democratic party’s distrust of voters and lack of faith in their own powers of persuasion shine through. Unwilling to wait for states and their voters to legalize abortion and gay marriage, they short-circuited the democratic process through the Supreme Court. For a more contemporary example, look no further than the Oval Office. In his opening weeks as president, Biden has signed a flotilla of executive orders, completely bypassing the legislative process the Constitution ordained for the adoption of laws.

I’ll admit — I don’t know a lot about Marjorie Taylor Greene, the freshman congresswoman from northwest Georgia who’s become something of a bête noire on Capitol Hill in recent days.

What I do know about her makes me want to like her. She filed an article of impeachment against Joe Biden on his first full day in the White House.

That ain’t bad. It’s certainly warranted, by the current standard in which Democrats have twice impeached Donald Trump on the basis of lies. Greene’s impeachment argument is not a lie.

“President Joe Biden is unfit to hold the office of the presidency,” she said when she filed her articles of impeachment. “His pattern of abuse of power as President Obama’s vice president is lengthy and disturbing. 29. DOJ Targets Elon Musk’s SpaceX For Allegedly Preferring To Hire U.S. Citizens
    Hank Berrien
    4 minutes

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Elon Musk’s SpaceX for allegedly preferring to hire American citizens over non-citizens.

According to the DOJ, in March 2020, a non-U.S. citizen inquiring about the position of technology strategy associate at SpaceX was asked about his citizenship status. DOJ attorney Lisa Sandoval stated that SpaceX “ultimately failed to hire him for the position because he is not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.”

Last Thursday, the DOJ filed a request with a judge “to order SpaceX to comply with an administrative subpoena for documents related to how the company hires,” CNBC reported. The DOJ wants SpaceX to comply with its subpoena within two weeks.

The disgruntled applicant initially filed a complaint of employee discrimination with the DOJ’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section (IER) on May 29, 2020. The IER enforces the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which has an anti-discrimination provision prohibiting citizenship status and national origin discrimination in hiring, firing, or recruitment or referral for a fee.

  30. FEB 03 2021 – Paris attack: Police respond as man steals van from town hall and smashes into pedestrians

The male suspect reportedly stole the vehicle from the town hall of Nanterre and hit pedestrians on the forecourt of La Défense. One person has been killed in the horror attack, while another was injured. The suspect fled on foot but was later arrested by the police.

The vehicle used is understood to be a street cleaning vehicle.

The shocking attack took place near the Grande Arche de la Défense.

Local police have said they do not believe the incident is terror related.

It is not yet known why the suspect, who prosecutors claim is a homeless man, decided to plough into the pedestrians.

An investigation has been launched by the judicial police.

According to an eye witness, dozens of police and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene.

Emergency personnel are understood to have tried to resuscitate one of the victims.

Forensic officers remain at the scene.

France has seen a spate of terror attacks in recent years, prompting the Government to raise its terrorism alert to the highest level last October.

The move came after three people were killed and several others wounded in a knife attack in Nice.

Just days before, a school teacher was killed and beheaded outside the school where he worked in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, a town north west of Paris.

The teacher was killed for showing pupils a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad.

    • Yes the Proud Boys will defend citizens that the Antifa and BLM attack. So I can understand the Canadian government for making them the bad guys. After all, this is a government that invites illegals into the country and locks Canadians citizens up when they return to Canada. Heil Justine.

  32. Iran’s Javad Zarif Praises Legal Victory After ICJ Rejects US Objections to Sanctions-Related Case (sputniknews, Feb 3, 2021)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/202102031081971336-irans-javad-zarif-praises-legal-victory-after-icj-rejects-us-objections-to-sanctions-related-case/

“This is the first major victory for Tehran in a case that was filed back in 2018, when the administration of Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and slapped sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif praised the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to dismiss all US objections to reviewing Tehran’s bid to lift American economic sanctions as a “legal victory” for the Islamic Republic. Zarif once again slammed the US sanctions as “unlawful” and stressed that unlike Washington, Iran has always honoured its international obligations.

“Iran has always fully respected international law. High time for the US to live up to its international obligations”, Zarif said on Twitter.

Tehran asked the ICJ to look into the legality of the American sanctions in 2018, the same year President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, also known as Iran nuclear deal) and slapped the Islamic Republic with sanctions. Tehran insisted that the US had violated the Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights signed in 1955. The ICJ ruled that Washington had to lift sanctions that affected the import of humanitarian goods and wares related to the safety of civil aviation. In response, then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the US was terminating the 1955 treaty.

Despite the US refusal to abide by the court’s ruling, the ICJ continued to review Iran’s complaint further. Tehran filed another complaint with the UN court in 2020 over the impact of the American sanctions on the situation with the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The Islamic Republic repeatedly condemned the US economic measures for limiting the country’s ability to import medicine and medical equipment to fight the disease, while Washington claimed it allowed humanitarian sales to Iran.

    New Stage in US-Iran Relations?
The US rhetoric towards Iran and sanctions has shifted under the Joe Biden administration, which expressed readiness to return to the nuclear deal. However, Washington has so far not taken any steps in that direction, but has demanded that Tehran return to compliance first.

Since May 2019, Iran has been gradually withdrawing from its JCPOA commitments, citing the fact that due to the sanctions, it is no longer benefitting from the accord. In the last move in December 2020, Tehran boosted its uranium enrichment capabilities to 20% after having already lifted the limits on the maximum stockpiled nuclear fuel volume. The Islamic Republic refuses to agree to Washington’s demands to return to compliance with the deal. Foreign Minister Javad Zarif pointed out that since the US was the first to violate the accord, it should be the first to return to compliance, adding that Iran will not be taking the “first step” like Washington is demanding.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the consequences that big tech companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google will face if they violate the privacy of Floridians and interfere with citizens’ access to candidates during an election.

The Republican governor criticized the manipulation of news and censorship of certain individuals while detailing the new legislation’s harsh penalties during a press conference from the Florida Capitol on Tuesday.

“Floridians should have the privacy of their data and personal information protected, their ability to access and participate in online platforms protected, and their ability to participate in elections free from interference from big tech protected,” said DeSantis.

He said that over the years, “these platforms have changed from neutral platforms that provided Americans with the freedom to speak to enforcers of preferred narratives. Consequently, these platforms have played an increasingly decisive role in elections and have negatively impacted Americans who dissent from orthodoxies favored by the Big Tech cartel.”
