Reader’s Links January 24, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

“Pakistan has approved the emergency use of the Russian-made vaccine against the coronavirus disease, Sputnik V, media reported Sunday.

According to the Dawn newspaper, citing a source in the government, the registration board of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan held a meeting during which it gave emergency use authorisation to Sputnik V. Domestic company AGP was allowed to import and distribute the Russian vaccine.

Sputnik V becomes the third one to receive authorisation in the country, following the vaccines developed by UK pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and Oxford University as well as China’s Sinopharm…”

  2. Compete, or perish.

Our defeatist attitude towards much is at once disgusting and understandable. Grey Zone enemy efforts have thoroughly muddied our waters and our psyches. As democratic societies we are paralyzed by infighting. We support the suspension of our civil liberties unilaterally, never mind the fact such suspensions were originally dictated by the CCP under the guise of unscientific Covid-19 coping policies, all based on false models.

I have posted numerous articles and videos on Grey Zone asymetrical warfare in the last two weeks. I believe these articles were bonafied because it doesn’t serve our enemies to apprise us of their tactics. Pepo’s long article goes into some detail on the same about Taiwan. Grey Zone-induced confusion is like carpet bombing (firehosing). The target is the broadest possible. It’s a mess until the defenders crawl inside and start fighting back. Only once engaged is the field truly understood

Since this applies to the enemy, too, it can create a massive informational mud pit. But is it a mud pit in China, too? How effective is our disinformation effort in China? In Russia? In Iran? Do we even have an offense to speak of? Are we able to penetrate language barriers? Are we able to do so in a nuanced, target-specific way? How can we know if we are really playing, and is there anything Joe Average can do to help? Are open democracies sitting ducks to Grey Zone warfare? Can our vulnerabilities–our openness–be somehow turned into an asset rather than a liability? Can we overcome the U.S. President being an enemy agent? Is he, really? Are even these questions naive? Sadly, I think some are. The reality is that hope is not a strategy, and if something stinks it must be dealt with directly.

Judge Pudding Brains by his actions, I say. Killing Keystone also killed thousands of jobs in the name of Green religion. It also kills American energy independence, because there is enough oil in the Canadian oil sands to keep that economy afloat for a hundred years or more. As the Dollar drops watch out for the issue of foreign fuel dependence. Keystone guarenteed a huge degree of insulation against currency volatility because Canada pegs its buck to the U.S. dollar at about a 25% discount. It has done so quietly and almost constantly since circa 1970 to ensure steady exports to its southern partner. Killing this pipeline is a big deal. Having to pay Arabs and Russians with devalued currency will hurt the U.S. while enriching the enemy.

This example, alone, is evidence of the executive’s immediate duplicity. Without U.S. might Taiwan is finished. Add to this the fact the CCP has gone out on such a limb declaring the island to be their property, there can be no going back while still saving “face”. Grey Zone or any Zone–ain’t no sunshine for Taiwan without a U.S. Prez on their side.

Four days since Pudding Brains got in and, given Red Chinese increased aggression, change can be measured as much by enemy actions as by his. Removing PT from the stage has already had a startling effect. Clearly, he was respected by all enemies who now smell weakness, and who will immediately begin testing and challenging. My Israeli friend expects war soon in the ME.

Biden’s opening executive order blitz reversing PT’s work is supposed to last 10 days. Imagine the damage to be done in four years.

One answer to Grey Zone info pollution used to be tribalism, but this has diminished. We strongly trusted your own. But, now, who is “our own”? Now we remain with tribe if our people meet with our politics, and even expand tribe (slowly) when strangers meet with our politics. A great micro example of this is VTB. At least in terms of Islam, Communism, and overall political outlook, the ties that bind this small community surpass the ties that bind individuals to many old friends. Why? Because with friends who have fallen behind in their understanding there is now simply too much ground to make up. It’s daunting enough to step out for two days, then try to catch up. Bringing others up to speed from too far back usually means combating their absent prerequisites. Conversely, a great macro example of expanded tribalism used to be the good ol’ USA. Pledge allegiance to the flag–AND BELIEVE IT–and it mattered not from where you came. The melting pot was why it worked.

Now, because of many years of this asymetrical warfare aimed at our societies, we fight both within and without. MSM ensures this. It is dominant in the Grey Space. Until the msm weapon is neutralized, crippled, or given real competition we will have a very hard time.

For this reason PT is right about starting a competing news network. Ezra Levant was right about starting Rebel News. Vlad was right about starting VTB. Informing the masses is the only way to counter the misinforming of the masses.

    Compete, or perish.

  3. Three Wise Monkeys Are Racist Now, Says Woke University of York (breitbart, Jan 24, 2021)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/01/24/chimpanzee-that-three-wise-mnkeys-racist-owoke-university/

“Academics at the University of York removed a depiction of the three wise monkeys from their website after they determined it could be seen as an insult to ethnic minorities.

The Three Wise Monkeys, which embody the Japanese proverb “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” and are often used to describe those turning a blind eye to wrongdoing, have become the latest victims of the Black Lives Matter iconoclastic movement in the United Kingdom.

The organisers of an upcoming art history conference at the University of York in England have apologised for their use of the three monkeys in their call for submissions and removed it from their website.

“Upon reflection, we strongly believe that our first poster is not appropriate as its iconology promulgates a longstanding visual legacy of oppression and exploits racist stereotypes,” the organisers wrote in comments reported by The Times.

“We bring this to your attention, so that we may be held accountable for our actions and, in our privileges, do and be better.”

Experts in Japanese history and culture were shocked by the academics insistence on likening the three monkeys to racist iconography.

The former curator of the British Museum’s Japanese collections, Tim Clark, said that he had “no idea” why they would be seen as offensive.

An expert in Japanese Buddhism, Dr Lucia Dolce, said that monkeys have a positive connotation in Japan and that monkeys would not be used to insult other cultures “because the monkey is a sacred being. They are vehicles of the deities.”

A spokeswoman for the University of York defended the decision, saying: “The Japanese symbol of the three wise monkeys was used to represent a postgraduate conference about the sensory experiences of the body, and it also appeared on a document that asked for submission of research papers to the conference on a range of areas, one of which included papers that represented black, indigenous and people of colour.”

“It was considered… that a monkey, which has been used in a derogatory way in the past, could cause offence in this context, despite this not being the intention of the organisers, so the image was removed,” she went on.

The Three Wise Monkeys were first embroiled in controversy in Britain in 2007, when four Unison activists used the image to mock the leadership of the union for turning a blind eye to the issues raised by the rank and file.

The left-wing union attempted to claim that the joke was racist as one of the leaders of the union was black, but an employment tribunal dismissed the case as it was determined that no reasonable person would conclude that the Japanese symbol had racial connotations.

Political commentator Calvin Robinson, who himself has been a target of racial abuse from left-wing activists, said: “In Japanese culture, the monkeys are seen as sacred beings with positive connotations.”

“I can’t help but feel like the only racism here is the assumption of York University’s academics,” Robinson added.”

    • My Grandmother left me her three wise monkeys – was she a racist?
She was a very clever woman who had little tolerance for stupidity. Gossips, people who distorted history, and fools were promptly told “Draw the line”.

      • There once 4 wise monkeys but they removed number 4 as he had his hands on his genitals and said “Do no evil” and that embarrassed all of the politicians who preferred the hypocrisy of the other three. : )

  4. France: Migrants Exploit EU Open Borders to Dodge Deportation, Spend Few Hours in Belgium and Return (breitbart, Jan 24, 2021)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/01/24/france-migrants-exploit-eu-open-borders-to-dodge-deportation-spend-few-hours-in-belgium-and-return/

“Roma gypsy migrants ordered to leave French territory have been using an EU loophole to avoid deportation, spending just hours across the border in Belgium and then returning.

The association Solidarité Roms Lille Europe has, for the last ten years, brought Roma originally from Romania and Bulgaria across the French border to Belgium after being handed deportation notices by the French government, it is claimed.

After crossing the border, the Roma fulfil their obligation to leave French territory and are given back their passports by the Belgian authorities. They then often simply return to France within a few hours, France Info reports — a process made easy by the European Union’s no-borders Schengen Agreement.

As the Roma are citizens of countries that are part of the European Union, they are allowed to reside in France for three months before having to justify their residency with proof of work, proof they are looking for work, or proof of enrolment in education.

When the migrants are unable to prove work or study, they are typically handed a deportation order but with the system Solidarité Roms Lille Europe has allegedly taken advantage of, few are actually deported from France permanently.

According to the local authorities in the Northern Prefecture of France, 1,000 deportation orders were handed out in 2020, but Dominique Plancke of Solidarité Roms Lille Europe says the figures do not reflect the reality of the situation.

“These figures are artificially inflated because last year we took 130 people back and these 130 people are still in France today. No-one is fooled,” Plancke boasted.

“Everyone knows — the prefecture, the border police, and us — that they are coming back and that we can do it again in three months. It doesn’t make any sense,” he said.

While the trick used by the Roma involves those with EU passports, France has faced difficulty deporting non-EU migrants as well in recent years.

In 2018, it was revealed that police in Paris arrested over 1,500 illegal Moroccan migrants but were only able to successfully deport six of them at the time.

Last year in February it was also reported that up to 40 per cent of the suspects in crimes in Paris were people born outside France.”

  5. Pirates attack Turkish ship off W. Africa; kill 1, kidnap 15 (abcnews, Jan 24, 2021)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/pirates-kill-kidnap-15-crew-turkish-ship-off-75453672

“Armed pirates attacked a Turkish cargo ship off the West African coast, kidnapping 15 sailors and killing one of them, officials said Sunday as Turkey sought to recover the captured crew.

The Liberian-flagged M/V Mozart was sailing from Lagos, Nigeria, to Cape Town in South Africa when it was attacked Saturday morning 100 nautical miles (185 kilometers) northwest of the island nation of Sao Tome and Principe.

Turkey’s Maritime Directorate said the crew initially locked themselves in a safe area but the pirates forced entry after six hours. During the struggle, one crew member aboard died. It identified the victim as engineer Farman Ismayilov of Azerbaijan, the only non-Turkish crew member.

After kidnapping most of the crew, the pirates left the ship in the Gulf of Guinea with three sailors aboard, state-run Anadolu news agency said. According to reports, the pirates disabled most of the ship’s systems, leaving only the navigation system for the remaining crew to find their way to Gabon’s Port-Gentil.

The Gulf of Guinea, off the coasts of Nigeria, Guinea, Togo, Benin and Cameroon, is the most dangerous sea in the world for piracy, according to the International Maritime Bureau.

Maritime security consultancy Dryad Global described the attack as “an exceptional incident for both its severity and distance from shore.” Last year, boardings in the waters off West Africa rose to 18 from 13 in 2019, the London-based firm added.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkey’s foreign minister, said he had spoken to the senior officer remaining on the Mozart, Furkan Yaren, and that the morale and physical condition of the sailors aboard was good.

“We are continuing coordinated negotiations for the release” of the abducted sailors, he said. “The pirates have yet to make any response.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has twice spoken to Yaren, his office said in a tweet. It added that Erdogan issued orders for the recovery of the kidnapped crew.

“The owners and operators of the M/V Mozart, which was hijacked at gunpoint in the Gulf of Guinea, have regretfully confirmed that one of its crew has been killed and others abducted,” Istanbul-based Boden Maritime said.

Among the captives is the ship’s captain, Mustafa Kaya, 41. His brother Seyit, of Istanbul, said the sailors’ families had been called by Erdogan.

“We hope we see them free, unharmed soon,” he said. “Everybody is trying. We pray for our brothers.”

In July 2019, 10 Turkish seamen were kidnapped off the coast of Nigeria. They were released less than a month later.”

  6. Indonesia says it has seized Iranian and Panamanian tankers (abcnews, Jan 24, 2021)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/indonesia-seized-iranian-panamanian-tankers-75455400

“Indonesian authorities said that they seized an Iranian tanker and Panamanian tanker suspected of carrying out the illegal transfer of oil in their country’s waters Sunday.

The tankers — the Iranian-flagged MT Horse and the Panamanian-flagged MT Frea — were seized in waters off Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province, said Wisnu Pramadita, a spokesman for the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency.

He said the tankers are suspected of a variety of violations, including not displaying national flags, shutting off their identification systems, anchoring illegally as well as the illegal transfer fuel between ships and spilling oil.

Authorities were escorting the two tankers to Batam island in Riau Islands province for further investigation, he said.

Iranian state television acknowledged the tanker’s seizure, citing Indonesian authorities. The report did not elaborate.

Iran, home to major oil and natural gas reserves, has seen its sales abroad deeply impacted by U.S. sanctions after former President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018. That cut a crucial source of government revenue in Iran’s long-anemic economy.

In the time since, Iran has relied on black-market sales and deals with Venezuela to keep its sales going.

Iran’s state-owned fleet of oil tankers routinely travel turn off their Automatic Identification System trackers to try and mask where they deliver their cargo. Those AIS beacons, a safety measure so other ships know what’s around them, can be tracked. Analysts say those ships often transfer their oil to other ships, that then sell the crude under false pretenses.”

Seriously: Amazon opposes by-mail union vote; would ‘disenfranchise’ voters and reduce ‘vote fidelity’

Amazon’s current HQ in Seattle. Bloomberg video

File this under things a monkey with a typewriter could make up faster than the human brain would dare to.

Less than 20 years ago, Democrats and the media were lamenting the insecurity of voting by mail. In 2020, publications like The Federalist cited a number of examples of their concerns, which featured warnings like this one: “[V]otes cast by mail are less likely to be counted, more likely to be compromised and more likely to be contested than those cast in a voting booth, statistics show.”

That passage is from a New York Times article in 2010, which goes on (continuing the citation from the Federalist) to assert that “fraud is easier by mail.” An election official in Florida was quoted as saying, “The only cases of election fraud have been in absentee ballots… The more people you force to vote by mail, the more invalid ballots you will generate.”

  8. Radical Muslims Face Trial for Alleged Terror Plot Against Yellow Vest Protests (breitbart, Jan 24, 2021)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/01/24/radicalised-muslims-face-trial-accusations-yellow-vest-attack/

“Three radicalised Muslims face trial after being accused of plotting to commit a terror attack against Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vests) protestors in Paris in 2018.

The three men, brothers Kamel and Hilial A. and 54-year-old Islamic convert Rémi M., were first accused of plotting to carry out a terrorist attack against the Yellow Vest protests in November of 2018.

While all three are believed to be adherents of radical Islam, with the two brothers speaking of the Islamic State terror group and “taking action”, according to wiretapped phone conservations prior to their arrest, the terror plot has been denied, Le Progress reports.

According to the lawyer for 24-year-old Hilial A. Léa Dordilly, the three men were not plotting an attack on the protestors but were planning on committing a robbery during the protests. Hilial A. is said to have attempted to purchase a fake gun in Lyon.

“It was for a fake weapon. The seller became suspicious so my client gave up,” Dordilly said.

The arrest of the three men came after a text message sent by 54-year-old Rémi M. that stated “It’s going to bleed on the 17th” — the day of the first Yellow Vest demonstration.

Remi M., a former soldier, is said to have converted to Islam around 15 years ago after a long battle with alcoholism. He adheres to a strict version of the faith.

Michael Bendavid, the lawyer for the former soldier, sad the text message was not sent to either of the brothers, adding: “My client never mentioned the Islamic State. He is very religious but it ends there. At the time of the incident, he was out of work. He needed money.”

The three men, as well as a fourth man currently in prison, are accused of plotting a robbery to fund a future terror attack, and all face up to ten years in prison.

Since the start of the Yellow Vest protests in November of 2018, some extremists have attempted to hijack the movement, including far-left Antifa anarchists who called on the Yellow Vests to help them overthrow President Emmanuel Macron on May 1st — celebrated as International Workers’ Day by many committed leftists.

Another far-left anarchist is said to have spied on police during Yellow Vest demonstrations. He was arrested at the first anniversary of the protests in November of 2019.”

Included in the flurry of executive orders and directives, the Biden administration paused a measure that was designed to decrease the price of insulin.

Trump signed off on the “Access to Affordable Life-Saving Medications” rule on Dec. 23, 2020. The rule was to enable “improved access to these life-saving medications by low-income individuals who do not have access to affordable insulin and injectable epinephrine due to either lack of insurance or high cost sharing requirements.”

The rule was set to go into effect on Jan. 22, 2021, but it was shot down by the Biden administration. On Wednesday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that the directive would be frozen for 60 days.

Perhaps to divert attention from here and now problems, such as the ravages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, economic meltdown, hyperinflation and rampant corruption, Tehran’s ruling elite have decided to give an early start to a presidential election expected to be held in June.

The main tune played by the official media is that the election this time is going to be the final showdown between the “reformist” and “principalist” factions that have provided an Islamist version of the Punch-and-Judy show as a sign of democracy in the Islamic Republic.

A sub-theme is also built around rumors that the “Supreme Guide” has decided to have a military president as his sidekick. So far at least two of Iran’s estimated 1,000 or so active or retired brigadier-generals have already thrown their caps into the ring.

One year after the abduction and disappearance of an elderly Christian couple in southeast Turkey, their children are still asking the Turkish authorities for help in locating their missing father and holding the perpetrators accountable.

Hurmuz Diril (72) and ?imuni Diril (65) are Assyrian Christians who lived in the village of Mehr/Kovankaya in ??rnak Province before their disappearance on January 11, 2020. Two months later, on March 20, ?imuni Diril was found dead by her children in a nearby river. There has since been no news concerning the whereabouts of Hurmuz Diril.

Father Remzi Diril, a priest of the Istanbul Chaldean Church and one of the couple’s sons, said in an interview with the Turkish newspaper Milliyet that his mother’s body had bullet wounds in the head and back, and that his father was probably killed. He added that the search for his parents by authorities has been insufficient:

The following are among the abuses inflicted on Christians by Muslims throughout the month of December, 2020:

    The Slaughter of Christians

Nigeria: In a video that appeared on Dec. 29, Islamic terrorists executed five Christians. The footage shows five armed members of the Islamic State (West African province) standing behind five men dressed in orange suits, and on their knees with their arms tied behind their backs. The terrorists order each of the men to say their names and the hostages oblige, each adding, “I am a Christian.” One of the terrorists then says “This is a warning to Christians in all parts of the world and those in Nigeria…. Use the heads of these five of your brethren to continue with your ungodly celebrations,” a reference to Christmas. The five Muslims then open fire into the back of the Christians’ heads and kill them.

A few days earlier, on Christmas Eve, and into the early morning of Christmas Day, Muslim raiders terrorized a Christian village, where they slaughtered between seven and 11 people, including a 5-year-old, and kidnapped 11 more (it is believed that the five Christians who were executed on video were from among these 11). Riding on trucks and motorcycles, the jihadis opened fire indiscriminately, torched 10 homes and one church, and plundered the food supplies meant to be distributed on Christmas Day. Although traumatized, some Christians remained defiant. A text by Markus Bulus, a local, on Christmas Day states:

I will go ahead [and] cancel the U-Haul,” he jubilantly wrote. “He now flies over the wreckage he has created, knowing we are not done with him,” Moore continued. “Trial. Conviction. Imprisonment. He must pay for his actions – a first-ever for him.”

The documentarian’s bitter ramblings are yet another in a long line of evidence that the Left is not interested in unity with Trump supporters – they are only interested in the former president’s complete destruction.

Moore followed up Wednesday morning with a tweet that was more measured and reasonable in tone.

A U.S. doctor who is part of the World Health Organization team investigating the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic discussed his work manipulating bat-based coronaviruses in labs just weeks before the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan.

Dr. Peter Daszak, a close associate with China’s premier bat-based coronavirus researcher and a key figure in directing taxpayer funds to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, explained how easy it was to alter coronaviruses during a podcast interview filmed Dec. 9, 2019.

“You can manipulate them in the lab pretty easily,” Daszak said. “Spike protein drives a lot of what happens with the coronavirus. Zoonotic risk. So you can get the sequence, you can build the protein — and we work with Ralph Baric at [the University of North Carolina] to do this — and insert the backbone of another virus and do some work in the lab.”

Former U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan accused the Biden administration of making the United States less safe within hours of being sworn in last week.

“With the stroke of a pen, President Biden made this country less safe,” Morgan told Breitbart News on Jan. 23. “It’s pure politics over public safety.”

“Look, I know what our team said to the transition team,” Morgan said. “I know the facts and data and analysis that was provided. I know what they told them and gave them that showed that the wall works.”

Morgan said he believes the administration didn’t speak to experts with the Border Patrol about which policies should remain. He cited the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), also known as the “Remain in Mexico” program, as a program that should have been kept.
