Reader’s Links on October 21, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  3. Pakistan’s Top Police Officers Apply for Leave En Masse After Arrest of Exiled-PM’s Son-in-Law (sputniknews, Oct 21, 2020)

“A day after an alliance of opposition parties held a massive anti-government demonstration in Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, son-in-law of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Muhammad Safdar was briefly arrested. The rallies are being held in Pakistan to campaign for the removal of the Imran Khan government.

Over a dozen high-ranking police officials in Pakistan applied for leave on Tuesday to protest the “mishandling and ridicule” of Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mushtaq Mahar during the arrest of the husband of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter, Retired Captain Mohammad Safdar Awan. He was arrested after a protest rally was instigated by opposition parties; Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz had given a speech at the rally.

“The recent episode of registration of FIR against Capt (R) Safdar in which police high command has not only been ridiculed and mishandled, but all ranks of Sindh police have been demoralised and shocked,” the letters of officers, which went viral on Twitter, read.

The matter was resolved after senior police officer Mushtaq Mahar, who was alleged to have been abducted by opposition parties and journalists during the arrest on Monday, deferred his leave and asked his officers to follow his lead.

The decision by Mahar came after Pakistan Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa intervened in the matter and ordered an investigation into the “incidents” that took place in Karachi, where Safdar was arrested from his hotel room.

The Sindh police in a series of tweets said: “The unfortunate incident that occurred on the night of 18/19 October caused great heartache and resentment within all ranks of Sindh Police.”

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari alleged that IGP Mahar’s house was surrounded shortly before Safdar’s arrest. Politicians of the opposition parties claimed that IGP was released after he signed the FIR against Safdar.

An alliance of nine major opposition parties called the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has begun a nationwide agitation campaign, accusing Imran Khan of rigging the 2018 election and coming to power with the support of the Pakistani Army.

Meanwhile, the 11-party opposition alliance is set to hold a third rally on the upcoming Sunday to demand Prime Minister Imran Khan’s resignation over soaring food prices and alleged corruption.”

  4. Swedish State Epidemiologist Pins Faster COVID-19 Spread on Larger Immigrant Population (sputniknews, Oct 21, 2020)

“…While dwelling on the peculiarities of the Swedish COVID-19 strategy in an interview with the British magazine New Statesman, Sweden’s state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell underscored the role of immigrant communities in the spread.

Tegnell argued that the corona pandemic in Sweden shouldn’t be compared with that of its fellow Nordic countries, instead drawing parallels with more multicultural cities such as London or Brussels.

“The pandemic took off in Sweden in a different way than in our neighbouring countries. We had a huge spread in Stockholm at the beginning, which was much more similar to the spread you saw in London, Amsterdam, and Brussels, which in many ways are more similar to Sweden than our neighbouring countries,” Tegnell told the New Statesman. “Stockholm and these other cities have large populations from other countries, which is important because the spread is greater and faster among these populations.”

According to the Statistics Sweden, the proportion of the population with a foreign background according to the Swedish definition, which is born abroad or domestically with two immigrant parents, is about a third in Stockholm, peaking at over 90 percent in some districts. A similar picture is seen in other major Swedish cities, including Gothenburg and Malmö…”

  5. 15 Killed as Stampede Breaks Out Near Pakistani Consulate in Afghanistan (sputniknews, Oct 21, 2020)

“180 civilians were killed and 375 injured over the last month in a spate of violence across Afghanistan, the Afghan Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Tuesday. The Doha peace talk among US, Afghanistan government and Taliban have been moving in slow pace which is creating uneasiness among the public as well.

At least 15 people were trampled to death while many others were wounded in a stampede outside Pakistan’s consulate in Jalalabad, the capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province on Wednesday. Media reports suggest that Afghans gathered in large numbers and were waiting for the tokens they needed to apply for a Pakistani visa at a football stadium in Jalalabad city.

According to Sohrab Qaderi, a provincial council member, 11 of the 15 victims were women.

“The visa applicants jostled to secure their token from the consulate officials…the crowd got out of control, leading to a stampede,” an official in Jalalabad was cited as saying by Reuters.”

  6. Afghan Security Sources Say 47 Killed After Taliban Attack in Takhar Province, Reports Suggest (sputniknews, Oct 21, 2020)

“A Taliban ambush in the northeastern province of Takhar has left at least 47 security forces personnel dead, the Afghan broadcaster 1TV News reports on Wednesday, citing security sources.

Earlier in the day, the broadcaster cited Jawad Hijri, spokesman for the regional governor, who said that the clashes took place in the Baharak and Khwaja Ghar districts of the province.

At that time, Hijri said that 16 Taliban militants and 17 security forces personnel, including the deputy provincial police chief, were killed in the clashes, the broadcaster said.

Elsewhere in the country, 12 Afghan women died in the city of Jalalabad after a stampede broke out at a soccer ground where thousands of people had gathered to apply for Pakistani visas, the broadcaster cited Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the Nangarhar provincial governor, as saying.

Khogyani stated that 13 others, including 10 women, suffered injuries in the incident, the broadcaster said.

Pakistan’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Mansoor Khan, offered his sympathies and pledged to work with the Afghan authorities to establish better conditions for visa applicants, according to the broadcaster.

Bomb blasts and violent clashes continue to ravage Afghanistan, causing deaths among civilians and the security forces, despite the ongoing peace talks in Qatar between the Afghan government and the Taliban.”

  9. ‘Mass fight’ breaks out at Welsh migrant camp as police arrest men aged 25 and 22 for affray and assault (dailymail, Oct 21, 2020)

“A ‘mass fight’ broke out among migrants at a Welsh holding camp yesterday as police arrested two men.

Officers detained a 22-year-old on suspicion of affray and a 25-year-old on suspicion of assault.

Pictures show a large police presence outside Penally Asylum Accommodation Centre in Penally, Pembrokeshire, following the incident.

The former Welsh training camp was chosen by the Ministry of Defence to house around 230 asylum seekers.

But the decision has proved controversial, with dozens of protesters both against and in support of the camp campaigning outside the facility every weekend.

Jane Hutt, deputy minister and chief whip, on Friday called on the camp to be closed and described it as the ‘direct opposite’ to human rights needs.

Ms Hutt said: ‘We can be proud of the way our nation has responded to successive refugee crises, providing a warm welcome and opportunities to integrate with our communities.

‘However, the decision by the Home Office to use the Penally military camp as a centre to house asylum seekers is the direct opposite of the Nation of Sanctuary approach.

‘We believe the use of the camp should end as quickly as possible.

‘The Welsh Government has repeatedly expressed significant concerns about the suitability of the camp at Penally being used to accommodate asylum seekers.

‘The camp does not meet the basic human needs of people seeking a new life in the UK.

‘It places people in accommodation, which is neither designed nor appropriate for long-term use – mainly poorly insulated huts – and risks re-traumatising many vulnerable people who may have been fleeing abuse and torture.

‘We sought a delay to the opening of the camp to ensure plans were put in place with local services to enable them to prepare for the arrival of asylum seekers, particularly to make sure Covid-19 public health measures were in place.

‘The Home Office denied this request and, as a result, proper measures have not been put in place.’

Earlier this month police and crime commissioner for Dyfed-Powys Dafydd Llywelyn asked the Home Office to apologise for the ‘impractical decision’ to house migrants at the barracks.

He said there had been a ‘lack of planning, communication, consultation and information’ over the use of the camp.

He described the move as ‘totally unacceptable’ and said it showed a ‘lack of respect’ to residents in Penally and the surrounding area, as well as local services…”

  10. Italian Charged with Attempted Murder After Shooting ‘Rude’ Migrants (breitbart, Oct 21, 2020)

“A 43-year-old Italian man has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder after he shot at North African migrants he claimed were being rude to him.

The incident took place on Saturday evening in the city of Reggio Emilia and saw 43-year-old Gaetano Lombardi coming across five young North African migrants who called the Italian “old” and told him to move out of their way.

The incident rapidly escalated with both sides hurling insults at each other until Lombardi punched one of the young men before the group ran off, newspaper Il Giornale reports.

Instead of letting the migrants flee, Lombardi drew a Beretta model 950 pistol and fired nine shots at the migrants.

Three of the migrants, two of them minors, were hospitalised after suffering gunshot injuries, including 20-year-old Moroccan national Salah Eddine who ended up in intensive care.

Lombardi handed himself over to police, stating that the migrants “were very rude” and told investigators: “I went too far, something snapped in me.” Lombardi has been charged with multiple counts of attempted homicide as well as unlawful possession of a firearm.

When police later raided his home, the pistol was found concealed under a skirting board and a second magazine was found hidden in the washing machine.

The case comes just over two years since Italian Luca Traini was sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempting to murder random migrants in the town of Macerata.

Traini, who had far-right sympathies, committed his shootings in response to the death of Italian teen Pamela Mastropietro who had been murdered and dismembered by a Nigerian migrant drug dealer.

“I wanted to hit the dealers, like those who sold drugs to Pamela,” Traini told investigators and said: “It’s not my fault if in Macerata all the dealers are black.””

  11. Football Club to Investigate Why Players Did Not Kneel to BLM Before Game (breitbart, Oct 21, 2020)

“The chairman of a Welsh football club is launching an investigation into why players did not kneel to Black Lives Matter ahead of a match.

Newport County Association Football Club chairman Gavin Foxall, who is white, was raked over the coals by former professional football player Nathan Blake, who is black, on BBC Radio Wales for the failure to show due deference to the Black Lives Matter movement at an English Football League Two match against Tranmere Rovers.

“Let me just say this is Newport… it’s probably one of the biggest black populations in Great Britain,” hectored Blake.

“You have fans here who are black, white, Asian. Don’t you feel accountability and responsibility to those people?” he demanded — apparently feeling it is the duty of club chairman to ensure that all players take part in the supposedly voluntary gesture.

“Racism doesn’t have a place in society, let alone in football, and as a football club we’re fully behind that,” Foxall answered.

“I don’t know why that didn’t happen today. As I say, there is a protocol for it, which is instigated by the referee with the two captains.

“Rest assured this club is fully behind the campaign and we want to live that out and we need to live that out,” Foxall pleaded.

Foxall had explained that it was his understanding that the ritual kneeling which has taken place before many professional football matches for months now is typically “something that the referee instigates before a game. It’s agreed with the two captains.”

“I don’t know why that wasn’t the case today and as a club we’ll take that away and have that discussion and see why that wasn’t the case.

“But I would say though as a club yesterday [Friday], we supported the Wear Red Day campaign [to support Show Racism the Red Card] and as you will see from our shirts as well — we support the campaign of today or any day,” he added submissively.

According to English Football League (EFL) guidance, it is, at least on paper, “the choice of an individual player or players if they wish to take the knee”.

There are few if any examples of players swimming against the tide in British soccer, although a few have dared to defy BLM in other top sports. Australia-born English national rugby team star Billy Vunipola, for example, has refused to “take the knee”, saying the movement is “not aligned with what I believe in.”

“They were burning churches and Bibles. I can’t support that,” he explained.

“Even though I am a person of colour, I’m still more a person of, I guess, Jesus.””

  12. UK Govt Says Teaching Critical Race Theory, White Privilege as Fact ‘Is Breaking the Law’ (breibart, Oct 21, 2020)

“Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s lead, the British government has declared it is opposed to Critical Race Theory and the Black Lives Matter movement in the classroom, and warned teachers it is unlawful to teach concepts like “white privilege” as fact.

Speaking during a debate on Black History Month in the House of Commons, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities Kemi Badenoch, who is black, described “the promotion of Critical Race Theory” as a “dangerous trend in race relations” and “an ideology that sees my blackness as victimhood and their whiteness as oppression.”

“I want to be absolutely clear that the Government stand unequivocally against Critical Race Theory. Some schools have decided to openly support the anti-capitalist Black Lives Matter group, often fully aware that they have a statutory duty to be politically impartial,” Badenoch said.

“Of course black lives matter, but we know that the Black Lives Matter movement is political. I know that because, at the height of the protests, I have been told of white Black Lives Matter protesters calling a black armed police officer guarding Downing Street — I apologise for saying this word — ‘a pet nigger’. That is why we do not endorse that movement on this side of the House,” she added.

“It is a political movement. It would be nice if Opposition Members condemned many of the actions of that political movement, instead of pretending that it is a completely wholesome anti-racist organisation.”

Badenoch stressed that the Government “do[es] not want teachers to teach their white pupils about white privilege and inherited racial guilt”, calling this “pernicious” and warning that “any school that teaches those elements of Critical Race Theory as fact, or that promotes partisan political views such as defunding the police without offering a balanced treatment of opposing views, is breaking the law.”

She also told Labour Dawn Butler MP, who had earlier demanded the active “decolonisation” of the British curriculum: “Our curriculum does not need to be decolonised, for the simple reason that it is not colonised. We should not apologise for the fact that British children primarily study the history of these islands.”

The Tories’ firm if belated denouncement of Critical Race Theory follows strong moves by U.S. President Donald Trump to ban federal employees from being sent on anti-“whiteness” training, later extended to include a ban on federal agencies from doing business with third parties which engage in such practises.

The warning that British schools should not teach aspects of CRT “as fact” falls short of commanding teachers get it out of schools entirely, however, and it already seems to be rooted quite firmly in the system, with a Telegraph article from June which warned that “the insidious march of critical race theory in schools may be breaking the law” having revealed that “the Chartered College of Teaching fully supports this approach, providing resources to enable schools to teach about ‘whiteness’, including ‘white racism, white identity, privilege, power and intersectionality’.”

Indeed, parliamentary staff at the Palace of Westminster are already being sent on “mandatory unconscious bias training”, with attempts being made to make elected MPs to take part as well — and the Government not taking decisive action to get rid of it.

Ironically, recent studies have found that white working-class pupils are systemically disadvantaged in the education system in favour of ethnic minorities.”

    It was moved and seconded

That Items No. 6 through No. 12 be adopted by general consent.

The question on Resolution R20/17-4 was not called as discussion took place on the wearing of masks in City buildings and the potential to expand the requirement to all public spaces. As mask wearing in the public realm falls under the purview of the provincial government, it was suggested that correspondence with the Province in this regard be considered following the upcoming provincial election.

The question on Resolution R20/17-4 was then called and it was CARRIED.

That the wearing of masks in City buildings be required as described in Option 3 in the staff report titled, “Mask Wearing in City Buildings,” dated September 27, 2020 from the General Manager, Community Services, provided a further exception for children and caregivers in a child care setting as per the BC Centre for Disease Control.

ccording to the newspaper “Bild-Zeitung”, the 20-year-old Syrian had already been subject to criminal charges in the past and was known to the police. The migrant had been in Germany since 2015 and was on a temporary suspension of deportation.

Just now the “Bild” reported another interesting detail:

“The Criminal Senate considered it proven that H. had not only used symbols of ISIS in his Facebook profile, but had also propagated Jihad via social networks and called on like-minded people to fight as martyrs against so-called infidels.

In addition, he searched the net for instructions on how to build an explosive belt, among other things. In 2018, the Islamic Studies scholar Dr Steinberg from Berlin prepared an expert opinion for the investigators based on the data secured at that time, such as chat, pictures and videos.

  15. Syria president orders new tax breaks amid rising hardship (abcnews, Oct 21, 2020)

“Syria’s president decreed a new income tax exemption on Wednesday intended to provide relief to low-income earners at a time of deepening economic hardship in the war-ravaged country.

The decree exempts those making 50,000 liras ($40) a month or less from paying income tax. The limit was previously set at 15,000 liras ($12). It also reduced the level of taxes paid in the lowest bracket to 4% from 5%.

  17. UK warship seizes 450 kilograms of meth in Arabian Sea (abcnews, Oct 21, 2020)

“A British royal navy vessel seized 450 kilograms (990 pounds) of methamphetamine in the northern Arabian Sea in the largest-ever bust by a joint maritime operation in the region, officials said Wednesday.

The HMS Montrose seized the drugs hidden aboard a stateless dhow, a traditional cargo ship that plies the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters, the joint task force said in a statement. The seizure took place last Wednesday.

The task force said it was unable to say where the drugs came from, who manufactured them or their ultimate destination.

However, Iran over the last decade has seen an explosion in the use of methamphetamine, known locally as “shisheh” or “glass” in Farsi. That’s bled into neighboring Iraq as well.

While drug lab busts have dropped in recent years in Iran, there appears to be an uptick in meth drug labs in Afghanistan, from where it is smuggled through Pakistan, the United Nations said in its 2020 World Drug Report. Both Pakistan and Iran sit on the northern Arabian Sea.”

  18. French militant group, mosque to close after teacher slaying (abcnews, Oct 21, 2020)

“France’s president on Tuesday named a domestic militant Islamist group as “directly implicated” in last week’s gruesome street beheading in a Paris suburb of a teacher who had shown his class caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

Emmanuel Macron said the group will be ordered dissolved Wednesday, when a mosque that relayed a denunciation of the teacher is also to shut.

A terror investigation is under way into the killing by an 18-year-old Moscow-born Chechen refugee, who was later shot dead by police. The killer has been identified by authorities as Abdoullakh Anzorov.

A judicial official said early Wednesday that seven people detained in an investigation into the grisly slaying, including two minors, were to go before an investigating magistrate later in the day for eventual preliminary charges. The seven were among 16 people, including five adolescents, initially detained for questioning. Nine are being released. The official was not authorized to be quoted by name.

Investigators are trying to learn how the killer, who lived in the Normandy town of Evreux, set up his encounter with Paty, whether there was complicity and whether the beheading was premeditated.

Speaking after a meeting with regional officials working to counter radical Islamists, Macron added that other associations and individuals are on the radar to be shut or silenced…”

    • What is COVID-19? The Fear Campaign Has No Scientific Basis – Prof. Michel Chossudovsky

The data and concepts have been manipulated with a view to sustaining the fear campaign.

The estimates are meaningless. The figures have been hyped to justify the lockdown and the closure of the national economy, with devastating economic and social consequences. The Virus is held responsible for poverty and mass unemployment.

Confirmed by prominent scientists as well as by official public health bodies including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Covid-19 is a public health concern but it is NOT a dangerous virus.

According to the WHO definition of Covid-19:

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. … These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but only have very mild symptoms. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing hospital treatment. Around 1 out of every 5 people who gets COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing.

According to Anthony Fauci (Head of NIAID), H. Clifford Lane and Robert R. Redfield (Head of CDC) in the New England Journal of Medicine

…the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.

The CBC never covered the story of the woman who was found beaten with multiple brain hemorrhages , a blood clot on the surface of her brain, extensive skull fractures, fractured vertebrae in her neck, lacerated scalp, badly bruised face, eyes so bruised they were swollen shut, and broken ribs.

Four weeks after the attack, Sara’s husband Alfred, a retired missionary, died suddenly.

Police could not tell whether the badly beaten body was a man or a woman. They described the beating as a random act of violence, the victim did not know the barbarian who beat her.
