Reader’s Links for September 9, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Major blaze breaks out in Greece’s main migrant camp

Greece’s largest migrant camp was partly evacuated after a major blaze broke out at the overcrowded and unsanitary home to nearly 13,000 asylum seekers.

Nearly the entire Moria camp on the island of Lesbos was on fire, including in an olive grove outside the walls of the main compound where many asylum seekers sleep in tents.

“Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called an emergency cabinet meeting in the early hours of Wednesday following a devastating fire in the largest migrant camp on the island of Lesbos.

In the night, a huge blaze destroyed the overcrowded Moria facility, which is home to 12,800 migrants. According to Greek media, it could have been arson. The fire broke out after reports emerged that 35 residents of the camp had been diagnosed with COVID-19.

The emergency meeting, chaired by Mitsotakis, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. (6:30 GMT).

The ministers of citizen protection, health, migration policy and asylum, as well as chiefs of intelligence service and national defense general staff, are in attendance.”

      • Blaze Engulfs Overcrowded Refugee Camp on Greek Island of Lesbos – Video (sputniknews, Sep 9, 2020)

“The Moria facility on the Greek island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea hosts more than 12,000 migrants, which is said to be over four times its stated capacity. The camp has often been criticised by aid groups for its poor living conditions.

A fire has broken out at the Greece’s Moria migrant camp on the island of Lesbos on Wednesday morning, according to fire brigade officials cited by Reuters.

?Some 25 firemen with 10 engines, aided by volunteers, were battling the flames, which swiftly spread both inside and outside the main compound, said a fire brigade official, who added that the migrants were being taken to safety. Makeshift shelters in the nearby olive groves were also said to be on fire.

?There have been no reports of injuries so far.

Reports say wildfires burning in two other areas on Lesbos are being fanned by strong winds. An investigation is underway to determine what caused the incident, with no explanations offered so far.

People were leaving the camp, carrying their luggage in their hands, according to cited witnesses.

The Moria facility hosts more than 12,000 people, and has often been the target of criticism for its crowded living conditions.

Last week the camp was placed under quarantine after an asylum-seeker tested positive for COVID-19, with confirmed cases of the respiratory infection rising to 35 since then.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, all migrants reaching the island by boat have been quarantined away from the camps.

Inside the crowded Moria camp itself, aid groups have noted the impossibility of enforcing the social distancing protocols necessary to curb the spread of the disease.

The implementation of basic hygiene measures also reportedly presents a challenge at the facility.

Located just off the Turkish coast, Lesbos witnessed a massive influx of refugees and migrants seeking to reach mainland Europe in 2015-2016.

In March 2016, an EU-brokered accord with Turkey all but halted the migrant flow to Greece, as Ankara promised to restrain the flow of arrivals into the bloc, while Brussels pledged to provide funds to help Turkey take care of the refugees.

The situation with asylum seekers along the Greek-Turkish border escalated in late February, when Ankara announced that it had opened its border with the EU to migrants and refugees, following an increase in tensions in the Syrian province of Idlib.

Turkey claims one of the reasons for its move was the lack of assistance from Brussels in dealing with the flow of migrants.”

  3. Trump Nominated for 2021 Noble Peace Prize by Norwegian Lawmaker In Wake of Israel-UAE Deal (sputniknews, Sep 9, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/202009091080406270-donald-trump-nominated-for-2021-nobel-peace-prize-reports-say/

“The nomination comes just weeks after the United States helped broker the peace deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, paving way for their diplomatic relations.

President Donald Trump has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, Fox News reported on Wednesday. The US President was nominated by a Norwegian lawmaker Christian Tybring-Gjedde for brokering the peace deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

“For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees,” Tybring-Gjedde told Fox News in an interview.

According to the nomination letter sent to the Nobel Committee the deal overseen by the Trump administration was a “game changer that will turn the Middle East into a region of cooperation and prosperity,” Fox News reports.

In his nomination letter to the Nobel Committee, the lawmaker noted the Trump administration’s key role in normalising relations between Israel and the UAE, as well as facilitating contact between conflicting parties in protracted conflicts, including that between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir border issue and the two Koreas.

“Trump has broken a 39-year streak of American Presidents either starting a war or bringing the United States into an international armed conflict,” he wrote.

Trump’s nomination is not the first one, as Tybring-Gjedde submitted another one together with another Norwegian official back in 2018 following the US president’s summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

Last month, Israel and the UAE struck a historic deal that established diplomatic relations between the two states and the UAE became the first ever country in the Persian Gulf to normalise ties with Tel Aviv.

The UAE also became the third Arab nation after Egypt and Jordan to make a formal peace with Israel. Other Gulf nations, including Bahrain and Oman, may pen similar agreements with Israel in the near future.”

  4. Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Remains in UK, Avoiding Ongoing Graft Case (sputniknews, Sep 9, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/asia/202009091080404571-former-pakistani-prime-minister-nawaz-sharif-remains-in-uk-avoiding-ongoing-graft-case/

“Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been implicated in several corruption cases. Last week, court had asked Sharif to surrender and appear before the court at the next hearing, on 10 September in an ongoing corruption case. Sharif has been in Britain for medical treatment since November 2019.

An accountability court in Pakistan has declared former prime minister Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender over his continued absence from the proceedings in a graft case. The court has also charged former president Asif Zardari and ex-prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the Toshakhana (treasury) reference.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case in March of this year, accusing the three of violating treasury rules, which resulted in a heavy loss to the national exchequer.

The anti-graft body accused Yousuf Raza Gillani of extending benefits to Sharif and Zardari to allow them keep the luxury vehicles gifted to them by foreign dignitaries by relaxing procedures.

The reference stated that “through dishonest and illegal means for their personal benefit and interest” the accused retained the vehicles in question “against a nominal payment of 15% of the total value”.

The former prime minister, who is undergoing medical treatment in London, is wanted in at least seven corruption cases. His bail, which was approved in October 2019 on health grounds, ended in early 2020 and an extension was dismissed on 27 February 2020.

The NAB issued an arrest warrant against Sharif for failing to cooperate with the anti-graft body earlier this month. In another case, Sharif is charged with corruption over alleged money laundering via the sale of shares in Chaudhry Sugar Mills Ltd in 1992.

Sharif was serving a seven-year prison sentence before he fell sick in October. He was flown to London after a court granted him bail.

When Prime Minister Imran Khan came to power in 2018, he launched an anti-graft campaign to bring back billions of dollars allegedly squirrelled abroad by the leaders of the previous government.

In August, Khan had admitted that allowing Sharif to leave the country on health grounds had been a “mistake”. Khan had earlier directed his administration to use all legal means to bring Sharif back from the United Kingdom. He had said that it was the responsibility of the government to bring back all those wanted by the courts.”

  5. Two Drug Smugglers Killed by Indian Troops Along Border with Pakistan (sputniknews, Sep 9, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/india/202009091080404510-two-drug-smugglers-killed-by-indian-troops-along-border-with-pakistan/

“Last month, India’s Border Security Force shot five people entering India illegally from Pakistan after a gun battle which lasted six hours. The security forces claim to have busted a drug and illegal arms smuggling racket allegedly sponsored by Pakistan, and arrested four related persons in July.

Two intruders were killed by Indian forces on Wednesday along the border with Pakistan in the western state of Rajasthan. The Border Security Force (BSF), responsible for guarding the international border with Pakistan, has claimed that the incident took place at night on 8-9 September on specific intelligence about narcotics smuggling from Pakistan to Indian side near Khayaliwala post, Sriganganagar, Rajasthan.

“Alert BSF troops foiled a nefarious attempt by armed smugglers and shot dead two smugglers ahead of fence,” the statement issued by the border force said. While searching the area, BSF also recovered pistols, about eight kilograms of narcotics/drugs, a night vision device, and Pakistani currency.

The force claimed that it recovered a national identity card in the name of Shahbaz Ali S/o Mustaq Ahmed from the incident site.

On 22 August, five intruders carrying a huge cache of ammunition and drugs were shot along the Punjab border.

In July this year, Punjab Police claimed to have busted a Pakistan-sponsored drug and illegal arms smuggling racket, arresting four persons, including a BSF constable posted in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir who was part of the ring.”

  6. Donald Trump pulls two thousand troops out of Iraq and plans drawdown in Afghanistan in days amid bust-up with top commanders he accused of going to war to enrich defense contractors (dailymail, Sep 9, 2020)
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8713809/Trump-pulls-two-thousand-troops-Iraq-plans-drawdown-Afghanistan.html

“The Trump administration announced Wednesday that more than 2,000 troops will be withdrawn from Iraq and the administration is looking to announce a drawdown in Afghanistan in coming days.

CENTCOM Commander Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. said the reduction will go from about 5,200 troops in Iraq to 3,000 and happen this month, which he said will ‘allow us to continue advising and assisting our Iraqi partners in rooting out the final remnants of ISIS in Iraq,’ according to CNN.

Reporters first caught wind of the president’s plan when a senior administration official discussed it with the press pool on Air Force One Tuesday night – and did so on the condition of anonymity.

The planned announcements come as the president has been trying to make the case that he has fulfilled the promises he made four years ago as he tries to secure a second term. Among them: pulling the U.S. out of ‘endless wars.’

He’s also several days into pushing back on an article in The Atlantic that charged that he’s said disparaging things about serving in the armed forces, including that he referred to U.S. war dead as ‘losers’ and ‘suckers.’

The White House has strenuously denied the report and Trump has derided The Atlantic as a failing magazine.

But in dealing with the blowback at a North Portico press conference Monday, Trump also suggested that the top military brass sent U.S. troops into warzones to please defense firms.

Trump suggested that while soldiers are pleased with him, ‘the top people in the Pentagon probably aren’t, because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy.’

On Tuesday, the Army’s most senior official rejected that notion – while also claiming that he wasn’t responding directly to the president’s comments.

‘I can assure the American people that the senior leaders would only recommend sending our troops to combat when it’s required for national security and a last resort,’ Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville told Defense One. ‘We take this very, very seriously how we make our recommendations.’

McConville also pointed out that a number of top commanders have children who are serving in the military.

There are more than 5,000 American troops in Iraq now.

In July, the top U.S. general for the Middle East said he believed the U.S. will keep a smaller but enduring presence in the country.

McKenzie, the commander of U.S. Central Command, said he believes the Iraqis welcome the U.S. and coalition troops, especially in the ongoing fight to keep ISIS fighters from taking hold of the country again.

Trump told reporters two weeks ago that ‘we look forward to the day when we don´t have to be there.’

The comments came during an Oval Office meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

However, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo emphasized at that same meeting that a full withdrawal of U.S. troops would only occur once ‘we can complete the mission.'”

  7. Grooming Gang Rape Victim: Mohammed Ali Sultan and Shahmeel Khan Turned Me into an Inhuman ‘Sex Thing’ (breitbart, Sep 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/09/09/grooming-gang-victim-muslim-rapists-turned-me-sex-thing/

“A victim of Birmingham and Telford grooming gang rapists has waived her anonymity to shed light on the horrors of she experienced at the hands of Shahmeel Khan and Mohammed Ali Sultan and to raise awareness about the impact of England’s predominantly Muslim grooming gangs.

Lauren Elysia Priddey has gone public about the traumatic experiences she went through as an 18-year-old, saying that she does not “want to keep what happened to me a secret any more”.

In 2007, Priddey was raped by Shahmeel Khan, who burst into her flat just days before she was due to take her A-Level exams.

“He was violent and unpredictable — like a loose cannon. A ticking timebomb,” she told the Birmingham Mail.

Two days after the first rape, the cousin of her attacker, Mohammed Ali Sultan — who was later revealed to be a leader of a grooming gang — also raped and abused the young woman.

“When Sultan came round two days after the rape I was still in shock, still traumatised. I had no fight left in me,” she said.

“He used to say he would make my life hell and said I didn’t want to play games with him. He would say he would kick my door in and when I said ‘you won’t because of the locks’, he said ‘I will kick your head in then’,” Lauren added.

Lauren said that the trauma sent her into a spiral of drug abuse and sexual abuse from other ‘Asian’ grooming gang members, being passed around to as many as ten different men per day.

“They degraded me to the point where I’d become this sex thing, this thing that wasn’t human, but just an object, to the point where I believed that’s what I was,” she said.

“Some survivors like me managed to escape that lifestyle. Other survivors are caught up in that lifestyle for years and years, becoming prostitutes or drug addicts,” Priddey explained, adding: “Lives ruined for life, losing their kids, etc.”

She later gave evidence against Shahmeel Khan and Mohammed Ali Sultan at court, leading to their convictions. Khan was handed a ten-year sentence, while Sultan was given a six-year term, later being jailed for an additional eight years in 2019 for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Priddey went on to write an anonymous account of her experiences in the book No Way Out, which led to a campaign of online abuse.

“One troll told me to commit suicide, to cut my wrists. He said I must be really depressed knowing all I’d ever been valued for,” she said.

“I was just really angry because I am luckily not in that place but it might have pushed someone else over the edge. I reported him to Twitter but as far as I know he was not even banned,” she added.

Lauren said that “for a long time I’ve been keeping my past separate from my friends, from my workplace — trying to pretend to be somebody I’m not. But I want to feel good about myself and say ‘Yes, this is me — look at my achievements.’”

She said that a main motivating factor in her coming forward is to help prevent further grooming gang attacks on children.

“This is happening to 12, 13-year-old girls and they have a right to be informed,” she said.

Lauren Elysia Priddey has gone on to work as a senior nurse assisting people experiencing mental health crises. She has also launched a crowdfunding campaign to help other victims of grooming gangs, which you can donate to here.”

  8. Swedish PM Rejects Police Chief’s Claim Gang Violence Linked to Migration (breitbart, Sep 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/09/09/swedish-pm-refuses-link-gang-violence-migration-police-chief-comments/

“Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has denied a link between migration and gang activity, after deputy national police chief Mats Löfving claimed gangs move to Sweden just to engage in crime.

Over the weekend, Deputy Police Chief Löfving identified at least 40 criminal clan gangs across Sweden, which he said mostly operate in so-called “vulnerable” areas, often referred to as no-go zones.

“These clans come to Sweden solely with the purpose of organising and systematising crime. They work to create power, they have a great capacity for violence, and they want to make money. And they do that with drugs, violent crimes, and extortion,” Löfving said, according to Nyheter Idag.

When asked about the senior officer’s report during a press conference, Prime Minister Löfven acknowledged the country was facing problems with gang crime, but said: “We will act on what is wrong, what is criminal, regardless of background, regardless of the reason for it.”

“I don’t want to link crime to ethnicity and exactly where you come from; those are separate. But it does not detract from the fact that we have a common task to ensure that we crack down on gang crime,” he added.

Löfving also indicated that children were being trained to become criminals by gangs. That claim was confirmed by Rissa Seidou, a police officer in the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby, one of Sweden’s most well-known no-go areas.

“It can start with just hanging out with the criminals, then they buy you some soda, then maybe you are asked to hold onto a bag that contains drugs. Later you have to keep watch for the police or you have to hide a weapon,” Ms Seidou told broadcaster SVT.

When describing the structure of the clan gangs, Löfving said: “Here the individual is not important, but it is even the case that marriages are arranged to strengthen the clan.

“In addition, the whole family, relatives, or the clan raises their children to take over control of the criminal organisation.”

Earlier this year, a report identified the majority of the violent gang leaders in Stockholm as being born overseas, while the rest were born in Sweden but came from migrant backgrounds.”

  9. More than 100 UK lawmakers condemn China over Uighurs abuse (abcnews, Sep 9, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/100-uk-lawmakers-condemn-china-uighurs-abuse-72896063

“More than 100 British lawmakers have signed a letter to the Chinese ambassador condemning what they described as “a systematic and calculated programme of ethnic cleansing against the Uighur people” in China’s far western Xinjiang region.

“When the world is presented with such overwhelming evidence of gross human rights abuses, nobody can turn a blind eye,” read the cross-party letter, which was signed by 130 lawmakers Wednesday. “We as Parliamentarians in the United Kingdom write to express our absolute condemnation of this oppression and call for it to end immediately.”

The letter referred to reports of forced population control and mass detention of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, as well as video apparently showing a large number of blindfolded and shaven men waiting to be loaded onto trains. The lawmakers said the video – which was recently shown to Chinese Ambassador Liu Xiaoming during a BBC interview – bore “chilling” similarities to footage of Nazi concentration camps.

Chinese officials have repeatedly derided allegations of genocide, forced sterilization and the mass detention of nearly 1 million Uighurs in Xinjiang as lies fabricated by anti-China forces. They maintain that the Uighurs are treated equally and that the Chinese government always protects the legitimate rights of ethnic minorities.”

“Greece’s coast guard says a rescue operation was launched overnight after a yacht carrying more than 150 migrants was found in distress in bad weather northeast of the Aegean island of Amorgos.

The coast guard said Wednesday a nearby cargo ship picked up 151 people from the yacht during the search and rescue operation Tuesday evening, in which coast guard and Greek navy vessels also participated.

A witness on board the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged cargo ship said they saw one person swimming away from the yacht, but gale force winds in the area were hampering any further search and rescue operations Wednesday morning, the coast guard said.

It said the cargo ship was transporting the migrants to Turkey.

Thousands of people fleeing war or poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia arrive on Greek islands each year in an attempt to make their way into the European Union. Most make their way to islands near the Turkish coast in small inflatable dinghies. But Greek authorities have said they have noticed a recent trend of smugglers using larger vessels — yachts or sailboats — to ferry people to Italy.”

    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/09/09/italy-forced-quarantine-migrants-buses-due-lack-space/

“Authorities in Udine and Tricesimo in the northeast of Italy have been forced to use buses as temporary quarantine areas for migrants due to a lack of space.

The temporary solution comes as the local migrant centre, a former barracks, has become full.

While migrants arrive in large numbers across the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa, they continue to illegally enter the country along the Balkan route, as well.

Initially, the migrant buses were parked in the car park of a church in Tricesimo but were later moved after mayor Giorgio Baiutti demanded that an alternative be found, newspaper Il Giornale reports.

Baitutti also noted that of the 72 migrants who were supposed to be quarantined and tested, at least 25 had escaped. The mayor said that as a result, the area was not safe for locals.

The migrants were then moved south to Udine where 40 were taken to reception centres run by the Catholic charity Caritas. Thirty were forced to remain on board two buses while awaiting transfer to a migrant reception facility.

“We are looking for places to welcome refugees, a small disused hotel would be fine or a school no longer in use, a building with main services is also fine. The problem is that we’re not finding availability,” a local official said.

Space to quarantine the influx of new migrants is also sparse in the south of Italy, where a sixth ship has been deployed to help quarantine new migrants in case they test positive for coronavirus. Each of the vessels is said to cost taxpayers €50,000 (£45,000/$59,000) per day.

There are an estimated 537 migrants aboard the five ships currently in use for quarantine who have tested positive for coronavirus.

Onboard the Allegra ferry, off the coast of Palermo, there are 264 positive cases amongst the 798 migrants on board. On the Azzurra, located off the coast of Augusta, there are 157 cases out of 770 migrants. On the Rhapsody near Lampedusa, nearly half of the 113 migrants on board have coronavirus.”

  19. p j watson – QUEBEC CITY SAYS IT WILL ISOLATE “UNCOOPERATIVE” CITIZENS IN SECRET CORONA FACILITY

Health officials also visiting homes to take away people who violate quarantine.

Authorities in Quebec City, Canada have announced they will isolate “uncooperative” citizens in a coronavirus facility, the location of which remains a secret.

During a press conference, Dr. Jacques Girard, who heads the Quebec City public health authority, drew attention to a case where patrons at a bar were ordered to wait until their COVID-19 tests came back, but disregarded the command and left the premises before the results came back positive.

This led to them being deemed “uncooperative” and forcibly interned in a quarantine facility.

“[W]e may isolate someone for 14 days,” Girard said during the press conference. “And it is what we did this morning…forced a person to cooperate with the investigation…and police cooperation was exceptional.”

The health official then outlined how the state is also tracking down people for violating their home quarantine and forcibly removing them to the secret facility.

“Because we have had people isolated at home. And then, we saw the person was not at home. So, we went to their home, and then told them, we are isolating you where we want you to be,” said Girard.

“Six other Quebec City bars “known to have been frequented by Kirouac regulars” are now being examined by public health officials,” reports the RAIR Foundation.

“It should be noted that it is not being claimed that anyone is actually sick from the coronavirus. But the state has the power to force a citizen into isolation anyway.”

As we previously highlighted, the government of New Zealand announced similar measures, saying that they will put all new coronavirus infectees and their close family members in “quarantine facilities.”

  20. Spain’s Catalonia to Teach Islam in Schools

The Spanish region of Catalonia has decided to start teaching the Islamic religion in public schools to encourage integration and interfaith unity.

The plan, which the Education Department published on Wednesday in the form of a resolution in the Official Journal of the Generalitat de Catalunya (DOGC), states that primary schools will start teaching the Islamic faith from the year 2020/2021, Spanish El Pais newspaper reported.

The new plan will promote unity and diversity. It will also revisit the history of Muslims in Spain.

The pilot plan will kick off in Barcelona, Baix Llobregat, Girona, and Tarragona.

It is a result of the cooperation agreement between the Spanish State and the Islamic Commission of Spain, following increasing demands of the growing Muslim population.

The plan guarantees that Muslim students will receive Islamic religious education in public schools at the levels of child education, primary, compulsory secondary, and high school.

Teachers appointed by the Islamic Commission of Spain will teach this curriculum.

In Catalonia alone, there are more than 1.5 million Muslims out of two million Muslims in Spain. It is followed by Andalusia, with a population of more than 300,000 Muslims, and Madrid, with 280,000 Muslims.

According to the Union of Islamic communities (UCIDE), Muslims make up 3.8 percent of the Spanish population, 40 percent are Spanish and the remaining 60 percent are immigrants.

Muslims in Spain are mostly from Morocco although there is a significant presence of Pakistanis and Senegalese Muslims in cities like Barcelona, Valencia, and Logrono.

    https://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2020/09/09/2345256/yemeni-drones-target-saudi-airport-again

“Yemeni forces launched a fourth round of drone strikes against an airport in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern region of Asir in less than a week.

The spokesman for Yemeni Armed Forces, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said in a post published on his Twitter page that a squadron of domestically-manufactured Sammad-3 (Invincible-3) combat drones struck with great precision the designated sensitive targets inside Abha International Airport on Wednesday morning.

Saree noted that the retaliatory attacks against the Saudi airport will continue as long as the Riyadh regime presses ahead with its military aggression and siege against its impoverished southern neighbor, according to Press TV.

Earlier in the day, Yemeni soldiers and fighters from Popular Committees had launched a series of strikes against Abha airport, using a squadron of Qasef K2 (Striker 2K) drones.

On Tuesday, Yemeni troops and their allies used a number of Sammad-3 unmanned aerial vehicles to pound several targets at the same Saudi airport, leading to the disruption of air traffic.

Yemeni soldiers and their allies had launched drone attacks against Abha International Airport a day earlier, hitting sensitive military positions there.

Arabic-language al-Masirah television network reported that then that Yemeni army soldiers had used indigenous combat drones to accurately hit military targets at the airport.”

  25. Turkey: Journalists Convicted over Reports on Spy’s Funeral
    https://english.aawsat.com/home/article/2498281/turkey-journalists-convicted-over-reports-spys-funeral

“A Turkish court on Wednesday convicted five journalists over their reports on the funeral of an intelligence officer who was killed in Libya and sentenced them to more than three years in prison, state-run media reported. But all have been released from custody pending the appeals process.

The five journalists from Odatv news website, the pro-Kurdish newspaper Yeni Yasam and the nationalist daily Yenicag, were among a group of eight defendants accused of violating Turkey’s national intelligence laws and disclosing secret information for their coverage of the funeral of the agent who was quietly buried in February.

Prosecutors charged that their reports revealed the officer’s identity and exposed other secret agents who attended the funeral.

Odatv editor-in-chief Baris Pehlivan and reporter Hultay Kilinc were sentenced to three years and nine months in prison while Yeni Yasam newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Ferhat Celik, editor Aydin Keser and Murat Agirel, a columnist for Yenicag, received four years and six months, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Odatv editor Baris Terkoglu was acquitted of the charges along with Eren Ekinci, an employee of the municipality where the intelligence officer’s funeral took place, who was accused of providing information to the Odatv reporter.

Another journalist, Erk Acarer, a columnist for the left-leaning BirGun newspaper, is abroad and will be tried separately.

Pehlivan, Kilinc and Agirel, the only defendants who were kept in pre-trial detention, were ordered released on Wednesday, but have been barred from leaving the country. Other defendants were released in June.

All of the defendants had denied the charges and demanded their acquittal arguing that the slain intelligence officer was previously identified during discussions in Turkey’s parliament.

“What I did was journalism,” Kilinc told the court in her final defense on Wednesday. “I did not know that the photograph that was published contained (images of) members of (Turkey’s national intelligence organization) MIT and it was not possible for me to know that.”

Ozgur Ozel, a legislator from the main opposition party, welcomed the journalists’ release, but said they shouldn’t have been put on trial in the first place.

“It is journalism that is being put on trial in this courthouse,” Ozel told reporters. “The aim is to intimidate journalists who are outside, to warn them not to report and to ensure that their hands tremble when they do.”

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, which had called on Turkey to drop the charges against the defendants, ranks the country among the top jailers of journalists worldwide.

About 75 journalists and other media workers are currently in jail under Turkey’s broad anti-terrorism laws, according to the Turkish Journalists Syndicate.

Turkey maintains that the journalists are prosecuted for criminal acts and not for their journalistic work.”

“A top US official has warned Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries that Democrats may gain power one day and impose greater pressure to uphold human rights in the region, calling on Riyadh to implement “structural” reforms to prevent future abuses.

Speaking virtually at the Washington-based Brookings Institution, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker said his office has been pressing Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, on human rights.

“A campaign to boycott Disney’s latest offering Mulan is picking up pace online following an outcry that parts of the film were shot in occupied East Turkestan.

Over one million Uyghurs have been detained in internment camps in East Turkestan where they are punished and indoctrinated with the aim of forcing them to assimilate.

Whilst China claims the camps offer voluntary education and training, investigations have revealed that detainees have been sterilised and used as guinea pigs for COVID-19 testing.

In one scene of the film, where Mulan is running across the rooftops, one of the internment camps can be seen in the background…”

  28. Iran, Turkey and Qatar can form alliance says Hamas rep in Tehran
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200909-iran-turkey-and-qatar-can-form-alliance-says-hamas-rep-in-tehran/

“Iran, Turkey and Qatar can form an economic and political alliance in the region according to Khaled Al-Qaddoumi, the Hamas representative in Tehran.

In an interview with Tehran Times published on Monday, Al-Qaddoumi said he believes the region is in dire need of a strong alliance to resist the Israeli occupation and foreign interventions.

Asked about the recent normalisation between Israel and the UAE, Al-Qaddoumi said: “This deal simply is a concession given by the Emirates to Netanyahu and Trump, two persons who are suffering a lot of political crises in their own regimes.”

Regarding an alliance between Turkey, Iran and Qatar, Al-Qaddoumi said it “is the right recipe for the dignity and prosperity of the region and Islamic countries”.

From an economic point of view, the three countries already benefit from trade agreements, however, according to Al-Qaddoumi, a common political view for the region is yet to be realised, “because today all of us face the same threat by Israel”.

He also argues that Iran, Turkey and Qatar should unite around the Palestinian cause, as they all have a consensus on it, regardless of the differences in race or sect…”

  30. UN: Possible war crimes in Yemen fuelled by arms flows from West, Iran
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200909-un-possible-war-crimes-in-yemen-fuelled-by-arms-flows-from-west-iran/

“Weapons provided by Western powers and Iran to the warring sides in Yemen are fuelling the six-year-old conflict, marked by deadly Saudi-led coalition airstrikes and Houthi shelling, UN investigators said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

Coalition airstrikes in the past year may amount to war crimes, while the Iran-aligned Houthi movement carried out killings and other abuses that may also constitute war crimes, they said in a report.

It was the third successive year that the panel of independent experts found that all parties had violated international law. This year’s findings covered incidents from June 2019 to June 2020.

“After years of documenting the terrible toll of this war, no one can say ‘we did not know what was happening in Yemen’,” said Kamel Jendoubi, chairman of the Group of Experts.

Panel member Melissa Parke told reporters: “Responsibility for these violations rests with all the parties to the conflict – namely the government of Yemen, de facto authorities (Houthis), the Southern Transitional Council, and members of the coalition, in particular Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.”

Britain, Canada, France, Iran and the United States continued their support to the warring sides “including through arms transfers, thereby helping to perpetuate the conflict”, the UN panel said.

“This year we added Canada because there has been an uptick in arms sales by Canada in 2019,” said panel member Ardi Imseis, adding that Spain, Poland and Italy had also sold arms.

“We therefore reiterate our call for states to stop transferring arms to the parties to the conflict.”

    “DISPROPORTIONATE ATTACKS”
The three exerts urged the U.N. Security Council to refer the situation in Yemen to the International Criminal Court for possible prosecutions and to extend its list of people under sanctions.

The Saudi-led Sunni Muslim coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 after the Houthis ousted the internationally recognised government from power in the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

The conflict is widely seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and its regional foe, Shi’ite Muslim Iran. More than 100,000 people have been killed and millions are on the brink of famine, aid agencies say.

“During this reporting period, the Group verified a further four airstrikes or series of airstrikes involving similar failures to take all necessary measures to protect civilians and civilian objects,” the report said of the coalition backing the government of Yemen’s exiled president, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

“Disproportionate attacks constitute war crimes under customary international law,” it said.

Mortar bombs fired by the Houthis hit a central prison in the frontline city of Taiz in April, killing six women and two girls, according to the report, which said it could constitute a war crime.”

“The Arab League (AL) called Wednesday on the international community to take a firm stand against the Iranian activities that “shake the regional countries’ stability.”

The AL stressed rejection for the “Iranian hostile practices,” calling on Tehran to stop intervention in the Arab countries’ domestic affairs, during the sideline of AL’s ministerial committee held via a video conference.

It also urged Iran to “stop support for its proxies in the region and stop inciting sectarian seditions that constitute a continuing threat to the stability and security of the Arab region.””

  33. Conservative Filmmaker Predicts ‘Citizen Militias’

Dinesh D’Souza, a conservative filmmaker known for his political documentaries, has predicted a rise in armed militiamen in the United States. He cites the growing militarization of left-wing protesters as the cause of this phenomenon, predicting that conservative Americans will eventually take it upon themselves to protect their homes and communities.
‘I’m Not Advocating it; I’m Predicting it”

D’Souza sees the current violence and social tensions that plague American cities as a possible prelude to something much worse. In a phone call with Fox News, he said, “The problem is that you respond [to rioting] through the lawful authorities, which is through the police; if things escalate beyond a certain point then you call in federal assistance. If things escalate beyond that point you call in the military.”

D’Souza went on to explain why this typical response system is breaking down. He said, “Local governments and state governors are calling down the cops and licensing their own private gangs. If the cops won’t protect us, then you’re going to see the rise of citizen militias around the country.”
