BAGHDAD – Iraqi protesters set Dijlah TV station on fire after airing music show during Ashura
Court issues arrest warrant for owner, Jamal Karabouli, over insults to religious rituals
Angry Iraqi protesters torched the office of a television station in Baghdad on Monday after it aired a music concert during the holy Shiite month of Muharram.
Al Dijlah Tarab channel, owned by Iraqi businessman and politician Jamal Al Karabouli, broadcasted the concert on the night of Ashura, the tenth day of the mourning month of Muharram.
The channel is known to air traditional Iraqi songs and music.
Ashura is a period of mourning in remembrance of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussein, who was killed in the battle of Karbala in modern day Iraq in 680 AD.
It draws hundreds of thousands of Shiite Muslims to the Iraqi city of Karbala from around the world.
Videos circulated on social media showed dozens of men standing outside the channel’s headquarters chanting “Oh Hussein” while fire is seen blazing in the background.
Protesters say the show was an insult to their holy rituals.
Local reports said the fire spread to a neighbouring residential building but protesters prevented fire crews from putting it out.
Security forces accompanied protesters but did not try to stop them, the report said.
The rituals of Ashura, that commemorates the death of Imam Hussein, involve self-flagellation, with crowds of mourners striking themselves and some lacerating their heads with blades.
An arrest warrant was issued for Mr Karabouli on Monday for violating the Iraqi Penal Code’s religious offences.
Mr Karabouli is likely to be handed a detention sentencing that will not exceed three years or pay a fine.
The headquarters of the channel is based in Amman, Jordan. Mr Karabouli is the brother of Sunni politician Mohammed Karabouli.
Earlier this year, Ahmed Abdel Samad, a correspondent for Dijlah TV, and cameraman Safaa Ghali, were gunned down in the southern city of Basra. The two men were reporting on anti-government protests.
Their deaths triggered nationwide anger at the government’s inability to provide public protection and adequate services.
Hundreds gathered in the streets to mourn the loss of the two men amid anti-government resentment which have been occurring since last October.

A mob stormed and set fire to an Iraqi television station Monday, a security source told AFP, over its airing of a “festive” programme on a religious day of mourning.
On Sunday, Shiite-majority Iraq commemorated the killing of the Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Hussein in 680 AD, with ceremonies held nationwide.
The same day, local television station Dijlah aired a regularly scheduled programme that included singing and dancing, irking Iraqis who saw the tone as inappropriate.
Dijlah swiftly apologised, saying it was an “unintended” mistake, but many had already taken offence.
“Today, several dozen protesters angry at the festive programme stormed Dijlah’s Baghdad bureau in the eastern district of Jadiriyah,” a security source told AFP on Monday.
“They torched the office. Four of Dijlah’s employees were wounded, and much of the bureau’s equipment was destroyed,” the source added.
Several Dijlah employees resigned in protest after the broadcast, and half a dozen Iraqi provinces immediately banned the channel.
A Baghdad court on Monday also issued an arrest warrant for Dijlah’s administrative head Jamal al-Karbuli, who spends most of his time outside Iraq, for “intentionally insulting the rites of a religious sect”.
According to Iraq’s penal code, insulting religion can carry a prison sentence of up to three years.
The court also asked Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC), which regulates the work of press outlets, to take action.
In January, the CMC ordered Dijlah to close for a month following its coverage of anti-government protests.
Masked gunmen raided the station’s Baghdad office in the first week of rallies in October 2019, and on January 10, one of its correspondents and his cameraman were gunned down in the southern city of Basra.

Turkey’s condemnation of the Quran’s desecration by the organisation Stop Islamisation of Norway (SIAN) has stirred a strong reaction from the Norwegian Progress Party.
The Turkish Embassy said on its Facebook page that it expects the Norwegian authorities to take the necessary measures and precautions to ensure that this type of action does not happen again.
Siv Jensen retorted by stressing that the freedom of expression is enshrined in the Norwegian constitution and that the she expects the government to pass the message to the Turkish authorities.
“We will not allow totalitarian forces or other states to restrict the constitutional freedom of expression we have in Norway. Let me state that it is perfectly legal to burn the Quran in Norway. It should still be,” Jensen told the newspaper Dagsavisen. “I distance myself from burning the Quran, in the same way I distance myself from burning the Norwegian flag or the Bible. It is still something we must endure in our society, because it is part of freedom of expression,” the Progress Party leader added, stressing that her party is also distancing from SIAN.
On Saturday, SIAN’s Fanny Bråten, who has previously been charged and acquitted of hate speech, announced during a public gathering that she is about to “desecrate” the Quran. She then proceeded to tear a Quran to pieces, spit on its pages and call the Prophet Muhammad a “paedophile and a warmonger”, sparking Muslim riots. Following the debacle, the police arrested 29 people, several of whom were minors. The Norwegian protest trailed a similar incident in the Swedish city of Malmö, where riots broke out after members of the Danish anti-Islamic Hard Line party burned a copy of the Quran.
?SIAN’s demonstration was condemned by Culture Minister Abid Raja, a practising Muslim, who called for a boycott of the organisation, stressing that counter-demonstrations empower it even more.
Stop Islamisation of Norway (SIAN) dates back to the early 2000s. As an organisation, it works to counter the proliferation of Islam, which it views as a totalitarian political ideology that violates the Norwegian constitution as well as the country’s democratic and humanitarian values. Its actions often feature protests, awareness-raising campaigns and not least, Quran-burnings, which it sees as a celebration of free speech, very much like the Danish party Hard Line.
?The Progress Party is a right-libertarian political party, whose values are centred around civil liberties, individualism and limited government. The risk of terror attacks in France remains extremely high, said Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin during a visit to the country’s internal security service, La Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure (DGSI) on Monday, reported AFP.
“The risk of terror of Sunni origin is the main threat that our country is facing,” said the Minister, vowing a fight “without let-up”.
Darmanin said that 8,132 individuals had been registered on France’s database of suspected Islamist radicals, deemed a potential security threat.
Wave of Attacks in France
The French Interior Minister’s comments come as 14 alleged accomplices in the 2015 jihadist attacks on the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly and the Hyper Cacher Jewish supermarket are set to face a trial on Wednesday.
The gun rampage unleashed by brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi at the offices of the weekly on 7 January, 2015 left 12 people dead, including celebrated French cartoonists.
Two days after the attack the Kouachi brothers were shot dead by police in the town of Dammartin-en-Goele, outside Paris.
An associate of the brothers, Amedy Coulibaly, killed a policewoman and four people during a hostage-taking attack a day later, at the Hyper Cacher kosher supermarket outside Paris. Coulibaly was also killed in shootouts with police.
It is the suspected accomplices of these killed perpetrators that are set to face justice for allegedly providing them with various degrees of logistical support. The trial had been delayed for several months due to the coronavirus epidemic.
During the court proceedings in Paris, set to continue until 10 November, three of the 14 suspects – Hayat Boumedienne, the partner of Coulibaly, and Belhoucine brothers Mohamed and Mehdi – are being tried in absentia.
They are reported to have died after travelling to an area of northern Syria and Iraq under Daesh control at the time.
The suspects remain subject to arrest warrants as their deaths have not been confirmed.
Those attacks set off a spiral of violence claimed by Daesh that left 258 people dead.
The biggest attack took place in November 2015 in which 129 people were murdered.
The epicenter of the six coordinated attacks, targeting also restaurants and the national stadium, was the Bataclan Theatre in Paris, where 82 out of a total of more than 128 people were murdered.
The terrorists, wearing suicide vests, had wreaked havoc on the city, indiscriminately gunning down victims at bars and restaurants, and then storming the Bataclan concert hall during a show by American rock group Eagles of Death Metal.
As Daesh claimed responsibility for the attacks, its online statement made reference to French air strikes on the terrorist group in Syria.

Amid the riots that broke out in the tiny Swedish town of Ronneby during the weekend, an immigrant mob attempted to torch the local church, Swedish Radio reported citing local witnesses.
Local man Naem Sufan, himself an immigrant, told Swedish Radio that he attempted to intervene when the perpetrators, both young people and adults, wanted to burn down the church. By his own admission, he was beaten because he “defended the church” by extinguishing the fire with his jacket.
The church survived undamaged, unlike Sufan, who was hit with a stone and ended up with a broken shoulder and a sore neck. He also confirmed that the perpetrators were immigrants, and voiced his outrage.
“You get so disappointed when you see immigrants do that. I’m an immigrant myself. And I don’t get it. Sweden has given them everything they want. We have fled war, so we can not start new wars here,” Sufan told Swedish Radio, pointing out that people who come to Sweden must become part of society and learn the language.
Sufan ventured that the riots are due to the Islamic Association and parents not teaching its young people and children how to behave properly.
About 20 people were involved in the unprompted brawl in Ronneby’s centre on Saturday night. Two people, including a police officer, were injured by stone pelting and several rioters involved were detained.
Following the riots that caught the local authorities unawares, the police are now increasing their presence in the town of 13,000, which is otherwise considered peaceful. However, the riots, which caused about $60,000 in damages, are currently seen as an individual event, even though connections to the Malmö unrest are under investigation.
“It is a spontaneous isolated event that we did not see coming. You can draw your connections to Malmö, but there is nothing that I have detailed knowledge of,” police manager Anna Johansson told national broadcaster SVT.
The riots in Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city, erupted after members of the Danish Hard Line party burned a copy of the Quran, ostensibly in support of their “brotherly” Swedish people. During the violent riot in the city’s ethnic enclave of Rosengård, whose population is mostly comprised of immigrants, the police were attacked and Islamist and anti-Semitic slogans were chanted. The city of Malmö and the local Muslim community subsequently rejected a religious connection, instead suggesting that the intention was to provoke.”

Iran’s Supreme Court confirmed two death sentences for Navid Afkari along with six years and six months in prison and 74 lashes, according to Persian-language broadcaster Iran International.
His brother, Vahid Afkari, received a prison sentence of 54 years, while a third brother, Habib, was given 27 years and both will receive 74 lashes.

An Iranian opposition group quoted their mother Bahieh Namjou as saying the brothers had been arrested by plain-clothes officers without a warrant.

Brecker, who works at the Institute for Research on the Labour Market (IAB), said, “We are in the midst of a demographic change,” as the German labour force declined by 340,000 people due to many transitioning into retirement in 2019.
According to Brecker, only mass migration can solve Germany’s labour shortages. He went on to praise the integration of migrants who came to the country during the height of the migrant crisis in 2015, French newspaper L’Express reports.
Around half of the more than one million migrants who came to Germany during the migrant crisis is believed to hold some form of job, according to the newspaper. Migrants have found mainly work in restaurants, security, and in retirement homes.
A similar trend has been seen in Sweden, which also took in a large group of migrants relative to its population during the migrant crisis. But language differences have become an issue in some retirement homes, with a report in July claiming a resident briefly went without food as none of the staff working at the time spoke Swedish.
The Berlin Economic Institute (DIW) has also released a study on migrant labour market participation and noted some positives. But it also reported that low-skilled workers still have difficultly in the German labour market, along with migrant women.
The new reports run counter to prior reports such as a 2019 study by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) that suggested up to 65 per cent of asylum seekers were unemployed.
The study also noted that of those who did manage to find employment, at least 20 per cent worked “mini-jobs” rather than full-time work.
Other studies, such as a 2018 study by experts at the University of Basel, have claimed that mass migration may have some short-term economic benefits but will end up costing taxpayers in the West in the long-term.
Other European nations are taking a different approach to an ageing population. While Germany pursues a policy of replacing retiring elders with imported migrants, Hungary, for instance, has decided not to outsource the process of reproduction, instead encouraging its own families to have children.
The policy is already bearing fruit — as Breitbart London reported in August, Hungary’s birthrates were already up five per cent in 2020 so far, after the government launched a raft of new initiatives to support traditional families, including large loans for young newlyweds that are written off as soon as the couple have their third child.”

“Saudi Arabia’s top military commander in its yearslong war in Yemen and his prince son have been removed from their posts along with other officials as part of an anti-corruption investigation, the kingdom said early Tuesday.
The announcement attributed the actions to a referral by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the 35-year-old son of King Salman who earlier carried out mass arrests as part of a similar anti-corruption drive that also targeted potential rivals to his rule.
A statement on the state-run Saudi Press Agency referred to “suspicious financial dealings monitored at the Ministry of Defense,” without elaborating.
As a result, the statement said the kingdom fired Lt. Gen. Fahad bin Turki bin Abdulaziz, a prince in Saudi Arabia’s large ruling family in charge of allied forces in the Saudi-led war in Yemen against the Iranian-allied Houthi rebels there.
Authorities also removed his son, Prince Abdulaziz bin Fahad bin Turki, from his position as the deputy governor of Saudi Arabia’s al-Jouf region in the kingdom’s northwest.
The kingdom is investigating four other officials as well, all on the orders of 84-year-old King Salman, the statement said. It wasn’t immediately clear if those accused had been detained or if they had lawyers.
Anti-corruption officials “shall complete the investigation procedures with all relevant military and civil officials, take the necessary legal measures against them and submit the outcomes,” the statement said.
Lt. Gen. Fahad only took over the kingdom’s Yemen war in February 2018, years into the stalemate campaign that still sees the Houthis hold the capital, Sanaa. He previously served as a paratrooper and special forces commander, as well as oversaw the Royal Saudi Land Forces.
He took over the coalition as part of a mass restructuring of the Saudi military at the time.
The war in Yemen, which has killed over 100,000 people, displaced millions and shattered the Arab world’s poorest country, has become the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. It began with Houthi rebels seizing Sanaa in September 2014, then marching south. Saudi Arabia and allied countries entered the conflict in March 2015, led by then-Prince Mohammed as the Saudi defense minister.
The war has become a regional conflict, as the Iranian-backed Houthis hold the north and a variety of forces operate in the south under the umbrella of the Saudi-led coalition.
Saudi airstrikes killing civilians and torture of prisoners at Emirati-controlled prisons brought international condemnation to the coalition. The Houthis face outrage over stolen humanitarian aid, indiscriminately using landmines and sending child soldiers into the conflict.
The Saudi-led coalition has splintered as the war drags on, especially after Emirati troops withdrew last year. Separatists backed by the United Arab Emirates have openly fought against Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which has been based in Saudi Arabia for years. That violence has flared again in recent days.
After coming to power, Crown Prince Mohammed has been behind several anti-corruption campaigns, including turning Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel into a luxury prison in late 2017 as part of a mass arrest of businessmen, royals and others. Those released agreed to sign over some of their assets, giving the crackdown the feel of a shakedown.”

Argentina: Protesters rally against China’s billion-dollar “pig deal”
Protesters marched through Buenos Aires on Monday, to protest against the possible memorandum of understanding between Argentina and China for an investment in production and export of pork.
Protesters gathered at Plaza de Mayo chanting and holding placards reading “More human empathy for the pigs” and “No to the agreement with China.”
Protesters also demanded protection for Argentina’s wetlands and actions to stop wildfires.
One activist Celeste Fierro said, “The only thing that this agreement will bring is more contamination due to the advance of agribusiness, animal abuse.”
“They want to sign the agreement with China to bring dollars into the country to pay a debt, but the debt is not paid with the lives of innocent beings, with other animals,” added activist Fransico Koglot.
If the agreement, now some refer to as the “pig deal”, is passed it would see 3.5 billion dollars invested by China in pig rearing, to make Argentina its biggest supplier. The signing of the agreement has been postponed until November.
Italy: Mixed reactions as Sutri mayor outlaws use of face masks
Residents of Sutri on Monday had mixed reactions after the Mayor of the Italian town Vittorio Sgarbi introduced a ban prohibiting locals from wearing face masks amid an ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The art critic and mayor issued an order which prevents Sutri’s 6,000 residents from wearing a mask. This excluded the time between six o’clock in the morning to six o’clock in the evening in gatherings when masks are allowed. Wearing a mask outside the specified timeslot could be met with fines.
One local Franco said, “We wear the mask, we follow the government rules. We wear them at six o’clock, we are all covered. Sgarbi said not to wear them, but we can’t follow Sgarbi although they are making us pay fines.”
“It seems a little absurd. The virus won’t disappear past six o’clock. I don’t feel safe to get around without the mask among some other people who don’t wear masks past six o’clock,” said another local Silva.
Sgarbi referred to a law introduced in the 1970s which prevented people from walking the streets with a helmet, mask or otherwise disguised. The law says a person’s face must always be recognisable.

The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the organization and funding of the violent protests that have disrupted several U.S. cities in recent months, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Chad Wolf told “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Monday.
“This is something that I have talked to the AG personally about,” said Wolf, adding that the DOJ is now focused on “targeting and investigating the head of these organizations, [and] the individuals that are paying for these individuals to move across the country.
“What we know, Tucker, is that we have seen groups and individuals move from Portland to other parts of the country,” Wolf addeed. “Almost 100 of them were from out of state.”
Wolf revealed the probe days after Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., called on the Justice Department to investigate those funding the organized riots after he and his wife were accosted by demonstrators on the final night of the Republican National Convention.
Paul commented on the issue in an opinion piece for Fox News published Friday, revealing some of the protesters were actually staying in the same hotel — and on the same floor — as he and his wife.
“My question is: Who are these people?,” he wrote. “Who paid for their hotel rooms? Who flew them in? Law enforcement needs to look at the funding of violent criminal activity like this. And national Democrats need to confront it. It’s organized. It’s paid for. It’s violent. It’s not about Black lives or any lives; it’s about anarchy and destruction.”
According to Wolf, investigators agree that violent actors “are moving around” the country.
“We have seen them in D.C., in Sacramento, and elsewhere,” he said. “They are organized. We have seen similar tactics being used from Portland and other cities across the country as well.”
Wolf pledged the help of the Department of Homeland Security to assist the Justice Department in their probe.
“We are making sure that the investigations that we are involved in, we are getting that information over to the FBI, to those criminal investigators that are doing their job” he said.
“I wish that was in a little quicker fashion,” Wolf added, but “again, this administration, this president is committed to holding individuals accountable.
Wolf said the investigation will serve as a warning “that if you want to riot, you want to loot, you want to do some of these other criminal acts that we see around the country, there are going to be consequences for that.”

President Trump claimed in a Monday night interview that a group of “thugs” in “dark uniforms” who traveled to Washington D.C. is currently under investigation.
Speaking with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Trump said that “somebody” got on a plane and traveled to the Republican National Convention last week, where groups of thugs were filmed harassing and chasing attendees following the event – including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and his wife.
“We had somebody get on a plane from a certain city this weekend, and in the plane, it was almost completely loaded with thugs, wearing these dark uniforms, black uniforms, with gear and this and that,” said Trump, who added that the matter is “under investigation” and that he couldn’t discuss the matter further – telling Ingraham “I’ll tell you sometime.”
“There were like seven people on the plane like this person, and then a lot of people were on the plane to do big damage.”
“Planning for Washington?” interjected Ingraham.
“Yeah, this was all happening,” Trump replied.
Leading into the exchange, Trump claimed that people in “dark shadows” control Joe Biden, and implied that they are responsible for the plane thugs.

“Indian Army officials recently talked about a sharp spike in terror incidents and around 100 attacks in Jammu and Kashmir since January this year in which 44 security personnel and 21 civilians have been killed. Over 170 terrorists have also been killed during the same period.
Terrorists from Pakistan are using the modus operandi of dumping arms and ammunition near the Line of Control (LoC) which are then smuggled into Kashmir by transient workers, Indian Army officials said on Tuesday.
These facts came to light after the army discovered two terror hideouts along the LoC in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition during a search operation on Monday.
According to Defence Ministry spokesperson Col. Rajesh Kalia, suspicious movements were detected along the LoC in Rampur Sector of Baramulla district on 30 August.
The army observed that the movement was from a village, located close to the LoC, from where suspects had crossed into Indian territory.
“Due to the adverse terrain, thick foliage and bad weather conditions, an alert was sounded for a likely infiltration attempt. The surveillance grid was beefed up across the area and ambushes were re-sited to thwart any such attempt. The surveillance continued through the night,” Kalia added.
On Monday, 31 August, around 5 am local time, a search was carried out in the area. After seven-hours, a huge cache of arms and ammunition was confiscated from two hideouts in Rampur Sector.
Army officials recovered five AK series rifles (along with six magazines and two sealed boxes with 1,254 rounds of AK ammunition), six pistols (with nine magazines and six rounds), twenty-one grenades, two UBGL grenades and two Kenwood radio-sets with one antenna.
“It shows the desperate attempts by Pakistan-based terror groups to infiltrate weapons into Jammu and Kashmir for terror activities with the active connivance of the Pakistan Army,” an official of Indian Army told Sputnik while maintaining anonymity.
The official also revealed similar attempts were made last month when information was received regarding likely weapons drops along the LoC near to the anti-infiltration fence.
“At that time one AKS-74U with magazines, five pistols (one with Chinese markings) and magazines, 24 grenades and other warlike stores were recovered,” the officer said.”

Laura Ingraham, interviewing President Trump for a segment that aired Monday evening on Fox, said the president’s discussion of what’s going on with the Democrats in 2020 “sounds like conspiracy theory.”
But Trump offered some specifics he can be held to account for later. We’ll see how this nugget holds up. It’s the kind of thing Trump has a track record of being right about, even though his most vociferous critics never seem to learn from that pattern. (He was called everything up to and including an imbecile for his remark in 2016 about there being video of pallets of cash going to Iran. It turned out within 24 hours that there was video of pallets of cash going to Iran. Before Trump’s reference to it, it hadn’t broken in the news on any American media outlet, although it was clearly available, because Trump saw it.)
I frankly expect this disclosure on Ingraham’s program to turn out to be accurate and meaningful. Accurate in that the suspicious nature of this group of passengers will be confirmed, and meaningful in that it will be about disrupting the convention, or other civil-disruption activity.
The lead-in was an exchange about Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Trump said, in his usual blunt style, “I don’t even like to mention Biden, because he’s not controlling anything.”

The assailant then produced a knife and proceeded to stab the white man, yelling, “Black lives matter” as he did. The following day, a black man in South Carolina opened fire on thirty Trump supporters for the crime of waving American flags and holding up signs avowing their support. Fortunately, no one died in either incident, but not for lack of trying.

During the run-up to the war in Iraq in early 2003, a coalition named United for Peace & Justice (UPJ) played a central role in organizing most of the major anti-war demonstrations across the United States. The coalition’s name was deliberately crafted to evoke positive associations in the hearts of the American people. After all, who could possibly oppose such lofty virtues as “peace” or “justice”?
But United for Peace & Justice’s actual purpose had very little to do with either of those virtues. The co-chair and principal leader of UPJ was Leslie Cagan, a longtime Communist Party member and a national leader of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy & Socialism, a self-identified Marxist entity seeking to bring “a 21st Century socialism” to America. In the Sixties, Cagan was an enthusiastic supporter of the Black Panther Party, a gang that waged armed warfare against the police and engaged in criminality that included drug dealing, pimping, rape, extortion, assault, arson and murder.
Cagan was also a strong supporter of the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, whose nation she described as “not an abstract idea of socialism or revolution,” but as a society whose principal hallmark was a type of “humane interaction among people” that she “had never witnessed” in the United States. And she supported the 2002-03 “Not In Our Name” initiative, a project of the Revolutionary Communist Party that seeks to achieve a Communist America by means of a “revolutionary war”—complete with “great bloodshed and destruction”—waged “right within the belly of this most powerful imperialist beast.”
