This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

  3. Should Hungary consider offering a friendly base in central Europe for U.S. operations? Would this provide it protection or make it a bigger target? Would the U.S. pulling out of the UK create an opportunity for Hungary in this regard? Is this a stupid idea? Does Hungary’s involvement with Huawei make this a non-starter, or an opportunity for U.S. counter-espionage? After all, Putin has his people there, and Israel, so why should America not have proper counterweight?

    • You can’t “play” China via Huawei. The intricasies of that technology make data defense impossible.
      They might risk some distant peripherals, as Bojo is proposing, but I’m not sure even that’s going to wash.

    “Australian lawmakers of all political stripes have joined a call to slash migrant numbers after the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, arguing the country’s historic reliance on new arrivals to boost growth has hurt workers while driving soaring house prices and crowded cities.

    Their push addresses concerns many Australian employers use the current temporary visa system to avoid hiring local workers and were exploiting people whose visa status and security depended on their wage provider.

    “Do we want migrants to return to Australia in the same numbers and in the same composition as before the crisis?” Labor Party parliamentary member Kristina Keneally wrote in an opinion piece. “Our answer should be no.”

    In particular, she called for a reduction in the number of young, lower-skilled temporary workers permitted to enter the country and more investment in skills training for locals at a time when more than a quarter of Australia’s population is foreign born, the second largest in the OECD.

    “We must make sure that Australians get a fair go and a first go at jobs,” Keneally outlined in the Sun-Herald and the Sunday Age newspapers.

    “Our post-Covid-19 economic recovery must ensure Australia shifts away from its increasing reliance on a cheap supply of overseas, temporary labour that undercuts wages for Australian workers and takes jobs Australians could do.”

    A member of the ruling conservative coalition, Andrew Laming, agreed. He said there was scope to increase the skill-based element of the migrant intake, arguing it was vital to focus on “quality rather than quantity”.

    Senator Dean Smith has also raised concerns about immigration, saying Australia deserves a more comprehensive debate in the wake of the pandemic.

    “Any plan to reshape Australia once the coronavirus has passed must start with a conversation about the composition, geographic spread and the skill components of our population,” he said.

    The current immigration debate in Australia’s parliament is a continuation of one that began in earnest even before the Chinese coronavirus epidemic took hold, as Breitbart News reported.

    In January, soaring house prices and crowded cities combined to convince a clear majority of Australians the country’s open door immigration push must end.

    Just 30.4 per cent of Australians now believe the country needs more people, according to a poll conducted by the Australian National University (ANU).

    This was compared to 69.6 per cent who felt Australia did not need more people, a dramatic increase since a similar poll was done in 2010.

    The collapse in support was most prominent among males with just 32.8 percent supporting a bigger Australia compared to 53.4 percent in the 2010 poll.

    Most Australians support the notion of cultural diversity but did not want population growth to come at the expense of the quality of life of the majority, according to the survey.

    The results confirm previous calls by local politicians for the country’s conservative coalition government to end mass migration.

    Australia’s current population growth is the largest it has experienced since colonisation.

    In 1981 the Australian population was around 14.9 million people. By June 2018 it had reached 25.0 million, with the last five million of that growth occurring since December 2004.

    Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in 2018 he intended to cut Australia’s permanent migration intake by about 30,000 people, citing public concern about congested cities.

    “They are saying: enough, enough, enough,” Morrison told the 2018 Bradfield Oration.

    In December last year immigration was again at the forefront of national debate when the Department of Home Affairs declared social cohesion must be at the forefront of any future decisions on migrant intakes.

    This includes cautioning migrants they must fully embrace Australian values, including learning English, while pledging allegiance to the country that will be their new home, as Breitbart News reported.”

    “Local politician Israr Rashid has been charged with a number of vote-by-mail offences in High Wycombe, England.

    Rashid won the Totteridge and Bowerdean seat on Buckingham County Council in a by-election on February 7th, securing 40.8 per cent of the vote on a turnout of 30.21 per cent — far ahead of his nearest competitor, independent candidate Matt Knight, on 27.8 per cent of vote, or the Liberal Democrat and Conservative candidates, on 21.2 per cent and 10.2 per cent of the vote.

    Rashid had originally been the Labour candidate for the seat — and is described as having been the Labour candidate in the Buckingham County Council news bulletin announcing the outcome of the election — but, according to the Bucks Free Press, the left-wing party “suspended” him just days before the vote was held.

    The local news outlet now reports that he has been charged with “conspiracy to defraud the electoral services manager at Wycombe District Council by dishonestly causing or permitting to be submitted to the officer postal voting statements which contained false particulars”, as well as “two counts of committing, aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring in the commission of voting by post as some other person.”

    Rashid’s lawyer submitted not guilty pleas via Skype on his behalf at Aylesbury Crown Court, whose proceedings have been disrupted by the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.

    Judge Francis Sheridan said a trial for the politician would be organised as swiftly as possible, warning that “If [Rashid] does not turn up for trial, it will be held in his absence” and imposing a number of bail conditions preventing him from contacting certain people or coming within 100 feet of certain addresses, to prevent “interference” with witnesses.”

    “Germany’s highest court has cast doubts on key eurozone stimulus efforts by ruling that the European Central Bank must demonstrate within three months that a key bond-buying program is needed and appropriate.

    It it fails to do so, Germany’s national central bank must stop participating in the program, the country’s top court said Tuesday.

    The euro fell after the decision by a half-cent to $1.0850. Analysts said the implications were not all clear but raised concerns the ruling could end up putting limits on key central bank efforts to support the economy of the 19 countries that use the euro as they struggle to rebound from the shutdowns caused by the virus outbreak.

    Doubts alone could complicate the ECB’s efforts since it relies on markets believing that its measures will be effective.

    The judges of the Karlsruhe-based Federal Constitutional Court ruled that Germany’s central bank, the Bundesbank, must stop buying bonds as part of an ECB stimulus program begun in 2015 unless the ECB reaches a “new decision” on the program that demonstrates its effects on the economy were “proportionate.” It also said the Bundesbank should sell the bonds, but only in accord with the ECB and over the long term.

    The ECB has bought more than 2.6 trillion euros ($2.9 trillion) in corporate and government bonds in an attempt to raise inflation and weak economic growth in the 19 countries that use the euro. The program faced objections from conservative German academics that it exceeds the bank’s authority and violates a legal ban in the EU treaty on financing governments. The court found that the ECB did not violate a ban on central banks financing government spending.

    In its ruling, the German court broke with the European Court of Justice, which had approved the bond purchases, called quantitative easing, or QE. Such purchases have become common among central banks and the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of England and Bank of Japan have all resorted to similar programs…”

    “A young woman in Central Lombok regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) was apprehended by the authorities last night over her viral TikTok video, which may see her charged under Indonesia’s blasphemy law.

    Using a disco light filter for the video, the 19-year-old Ria Ernawanti ?— who donned a mukena (a cloak covering the entirety of a woman’s head and body worn for prayer) ?— demonstrated sholat (Islamic prayer) only to stop in the middle of it to dance to the beat of the music in the background, presumably a dangdut koplo song. According to the caption, she resumed praying as her husband arrived home.

    The video of Ria being taken into a police car is split into in the first and second slides of the Instagram post below, while her apology video and the TikTok video in question is in the third and fourth slides.

    “While praying, suddenly a neighbor played a DJ’s song. [So I’m dancing] instead of being khusyuk (focused, praying wholeheartedly), but my husband suddenly came home,” the caption in the video reads.

    Ria was taken to the Central Lombok Police last night for questioning, in which she reportedly told authorities that she made the video just for fun.

    “The Loteng Police along with Kopang Police officers apprehended the suspect who made a video containing elements of tribal, racial, and religious discrimination or an insult towards a certain religion embraced in Indonesia in a TikTok account with the handle yott.kocet.01, the virality of which has upset the public due to the suspect’s disgraceful actions in the video” Central Lombok Police’s Crime Investigation Unit Chief Priyo Suhartono told Detik today.

    Priyo said that Ria could potentially be charged with blasphemy, but police are still waiting for a statement from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the highest clerical body in the country, which could be used as expert testimony against Ria.

  14. Syrian commits attack on German express train – terrorist background is likely

    On Saturday, the 25th of April, the driver of an InterCity Express (ICE) train reported that his train had run over several concrete slabs. The train could have easily derailed as a result, only by luck it did not happen and nobody was injured. The police arrested a largely confessing Syrian migrant, who is now under investigation for attempted murder.

    The Syrian suspect, who according to the police has already confessed to most of the crime, had laid several concrete slabs on the tracks of the 5830 railway line near Osterhofen (in the Lower Bavarian district of Deggendorf) between 3 and 4 p.m.

    After a few days, on Tuesday, April 29, the Passau federal police were able to determine the identity of the accused and arrest him in co-operation with the Deggendorf criminal police. He is a migrant of Syrian nationality. The young man is now under investigation for attempted murder in a crime unit with dangerous interference in rail traffic.

  15. Radio station FunX scraps Ramadan show after death threats

    Radio station FunX decided to scrap its show Ramadan Late Night after multiple of its employees received death threats. DJ Moradzo told broadcaster NOS that the threats came from “purists” or “extremists” who believe music and Ramadan should not mix.

    Ramadan Late Night was started last year, with the idea that people celebrating Ramadan can share their experiences. According to the radio station, the program received so many positive reactions that it was decided to repeat the concept this year. “This has provoked unexpectedly strong reactions on social media. According to some people, music and Ramadan do not go together,” FunX said in a statement.

    Several FunX employees and the people around them were threatened with death, the station said. “And since their safety is paramount, we had to hire extra security. An unacceptable consequence of an initiative that was meant to bring people together.”

    DJ Moradzo told NOS that one of the threats he received told him to imagine leaving the station one night, to find two guys getting off a scooter and riddling his chest with bullets. Another threat said that he would be “shot to pieces”. According to the FunX DJ, an Instagram account with some 40 thousand followers, which is run by a man previously convicted of child sexual abuse, set its followers on the station.

    Due to the threats, FunX decided to scrap Ramadan Late Night, but that does not mean the station will avoid the topic of Ramadan altogether. “Ramadan is a daily reality in the lives of some of our audience, so we will not shy away from this topic,” the station said. “Our goal now more than ever is to bring people together in this time with inspiring stories, tips recipes, etc. We will do this from today by giving this topic a place throughout our programming and across all our channels.”

    Moradzo said that the threats were reported to the police.

    “Islamic terrorists, mainly the Taliban, were responsible for 185 fatalities and 188 injuries during the first week of Ramadan, a time when extremists believe martyrdom and jihad are exceptionally rewarded in paradise, a Breitbart News tally revealed.

    That means, on average, terrorists killed about 26 people each day during the first full seven days of the holiest week for Muslims — April 24 to 30. During that same period, there were 60 terrorist attacks that took place in 13 countries, resulting in a total of 373 casualties, including fatalities and injuries.

    That translates to over 50 casualties each day during the holiest month for Islam adherents.

    As it has done in the last three years, Breitbart News will provide regular updates on the carnage during Ramadan, which began at sunset on April 23 in most countries and will last through sundown on May 23.

    The first full day of fasting fell on April 24, the first day Breitbart News began its count.

    While several countries and regions have put their citizens on some form of lockdown, including Kabul, the coronavirus pandemic plaguing the globe has not slowed the war in Afghanistan.

    So far, the deadliest group during the ongoing month of Ramadan is the Afghan Taliban, responsible for 130 deaths, or nearly 70 percent of all fatalities during the first week. Afghan Taliban jihadis are also behind over 75 percent (144) of all injuries.

    As a result of the Taliban’s relentless attacks, Afghanistan is so far the deadliest country of the holy month, home to 40, or about two-thirds, of all 60 documented assaults during the first week of Ramadan.

    The Taliban rejected a U.S.-backed Ramadan truce offered by Afghanistan, reportedly saying a ceasefire is “not rational” as they ramp up attacks on the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) and civilians.

    At the end of February, the United States and the Taliban narco-jihadis signed an agreement calling for the conditions-based withdrawal of American and foreign military forces.

    Even as the Taliban ramps up attacks, the first phase of the withdrawal of foreign forces is already underway, a U.S. reconstruction watchdog noted last week. America is reportedly working on bringing the number of American troops in the war and pandemic-ravaged country to well below 10,000. American troops invaded Afghanistan in October 2001.

    Despite the demise of its so-called caliphate in March 2019, the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) and its affiliates continue to wreak havoc, responsible for 36 deaths and five injuries during the first days of Ramadan, primarily in Iraq.

    “The terrorist activities of Daesh [Islamic State] have increased during Ramadan [Muslims’ holy month],” Nihad Mohammed, a spokesperson for the police in Iraq’s Diyala province, declared.

    The jihadi group continues to operate outside the Middle East. On April 27, an ISIS-linked man in France rammed his car into two police motorcyclists, seriously injuring them.

    There was also one ISIS-linked attack each in Egypt, the Philippines, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

    Although to a much lesser extent, other jihadi groups have also been carrying out attacks during Ramadan, including Boko Haram in Nigeria, the Iran-allied Shiite Houthis in Yemen, and the al-Qaeda-linked Hayyat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS).

    Even with the fall of the ISIS caliphate in 2019, the first week of Ramadan this year is deadlier than in 2019. Jihadists killed at least 165 people and injured another 145 in the first week of that year.

    Jihadist groups and other Islamists are known to urge their members and supporters to engage in jihad on Ramadan, believing that martyrs will get extra rewards in paradise. Despite these attempts, the vast majority of Muslims solely abide by Ramadan’s fasting tradition: abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking, having sex, and other physical needs each day, starting from before the break of dawn until sunset.

    Breitbart News primarily gleans its tally from the Religion of Peace website in coordination with news and government reports.

    Given that news outlets and governments fail to report many of the terrorist attacks in real-time, the casualty total for the first week is subject to change.

    Government officials may also update some of the casualty totals as some of the injured victims succumb to their injuries.

    Venezuelan security forces arrested dozens of people, including two Americans, after a beach invasion allegedly aimed at overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro – a plot said to involve US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido.

    US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the Venezuela situation “has nothing to do with our government”.

    “We’ll find out. We just heard about it,” Trump said when asked about the incident and the Americans’ arrests.

    Maduro held up a pair of blue US passports, reading off the names and birth dates on them in a nationwide broadcast on state television on Monday.

    He showed images of the fishing boats the alleged attackers rode in on and equipment such as walkie-talkies and night-vision glasses. He blamed the attacks on the Trump administration and neighbouring Colombia, both of which have denied involvement.

    “The United States government is fully and completely involved in this defeated raid,” Maduro said, praising members of a fishing village for cornering one group and netting the “professional American mercenaries”.

    A simmering Islamist rebellion in a remote corner of Mozambique has erupted into open warfare in recent weeks, with reports of massacres, beheadings and the brief seizure of two towns in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, writes BBC Africa correspondent Andrew Harding.
    The armed men walked calmly through the long grass, skirting past a large white building, seemingly untroubled by the sound of gunfire.
    Most carried automatic rifles and wore variations of what appeared to be Mozambican army uniforms. A few more shots rang out in the distance and someone shouted “Allahu Akbar” – God is the greatest – as if in reply.
    The video footage, shot last month on a mobile phone in Muidumbe was powerful new evidence that a murky conflict in the northern-most region of Mozambique has now moved out into the open, in spectacular and alarming fashion.
    A second video, shot a few weeks earlier, showed a dead man – apparently a policeman – lying in a pool of blood. The camera then moved over to reveal another corpse, then a third lying under a black police vehicle, then a fourth body out in the open, and finally a large pile of automatic weapons in some sort of police or military store.
    How close are the links to Islamic State?
    That footage was filmed in the strategic port of Mocimboa da Praia, which was briefly – and dramatically – seized by the militants on 24 March. Two days later, they seized another important town, Quissanga.
    “Now they have guns and vehicles, so they move easily and can attack widely. And they are using soldiers’ uniforms. So, people are very confused, and very afraid,” said the Catholic Bishop of Pemba, Luiz Fernando Lisboa.
    Those two large-scale, sophisticated military assaults are proof of a radical change in strategy for the group known locally as al-Shabab, although it has no known links to the Somali jihadi group of the same name, which is affiliated to al-Qaeda.
    It has spent the past two years operating in the shadows, attacking remote villages across the province, ambushing army patrols on isolated roads, instilling terror in many rural communities, forcing perhaps 200,000 people to flee from their homes, but rarely giving any indication about its motives, its leadership, or its demands.
    The video footage from both Mocimboa da Praia and Muidumbe district was quickly incorporated into the so-called Islamic State (IS) group’s propaganda films, aired by the Amaq News Agency.
    IS has claimed responsibility for a string of recent attacks in Mozambique, which has a Muslim population of about 18%, and appears to be promoting its involvement there as part of a “franchise” operation that has seen it expanding its footprint in several parts of Africa.
    The idea that the rebellion in Cabo Delgado is, at its core, part of a global jihadist movement, has been given credibility by the militants themselves, who publicly swore allegiance to IS last year.

    Following passage of the fourth phase of coronavirus relief, Congress is moving on to debate over what some analysts are calling the next great legislative battle of the pandemic — bailouts for state and local governments.

    At a press conference last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi emphasized a renewed focus by Democrat lawmakers on securing further funding, which she claimed will buttress ailing state coffers and prevent layoffs of public servants.

    “So much of how we function in meeting the needs of the people depends on state and local governments having the resources,” she stated. “Some of these people, these heroes, are risking their lives to save other people’s lives and now they risk losing their jobs because what the states and localities had to spend…this just makes it unsustainable, not to have layoffs.”

    One study suggested the economic shutdown has cost states an average of 20 percent fall in revenue. This coupled with highly increased demand for services, chiefly unemployment claims, has put states and local governments in dire financial straits.

    Democrats in Congress reportedly tried to add state and local bailouts to the fourth coronavirus relief bill, a sticking point for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who criticized a lack of oversight in Democrats’ proposal.

    Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, dismissed theories that the Chinese coronavirus was created in a laboratory in Wuhan.

    “If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what’s out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated,” Fauci said in an interview with National Geographic published Monday.

    “Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species,” he added.

    Fauci’s remarks come after Pompeo told ABC’s This Week that there was “enormous evidence” that the coronavirus originated in the Wuhan lab — not a wet market.

    “China has a history of infecting the world, and they have a history of running substandard laboratories,” he explained to host Martha Raddatz. “These are not the first times that we’ve had a world exposed to viruses as a result of failures in a Chinese lab.”

    “While the intelligence community continues to do its work, they should continue to do that, and verify so that we are certain, I can tell you that there is a significant amount of evidence that this came from that laboratory in Wuhan,” he added.

    In late April, President Trump also indicated that he had a high degree of confidence that the illness came from the Chinese lab.

    “Yes. Yes, I have,” the president responded when asked if he believed the illness could have leaked from the lab. “I think that the World Health Organization should be ashamed of themselves, because they’re like the public relations agency for China.”

    On Thursday, the Office of Director of National Intelligence issued a rare statement in which it announced it does not believe that the coronavirus was genetically modified.

    “The Intelligence Community also concurs with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified,” said the top U.S. spy agency. “The IC will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan.”

    The Associated Press reported Sunday that China “intentionally concealed the severity” of the pandemic from the world in January in order to hoard medical supplies, according to a Department of Homeland Security intelligence report.
