New revelations about the possible motives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in meeting with then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn in January 2017 raise questions about then-Vice President Joe Biden’s role.
Documents unsealed Wednesday, including notes and emails, indicate that FBI agents were not focused on the investigation of Russian “collusion” when they met with Flynn at the White House early in President Donald Trump’s term.
Rather, they were determined to extract an admission, or a lie, that would see Flynn prosecuted or fired.
In one note, an FBI agent wrote: “What’s our goal? Truth/admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?” The agents also appear to admit not having warned Flynn beforehand that he was under investigation.
Flynn had spoken to the Russian ambassador by telephone in late December 2016. The Department of Justice viewed those calls as a potential violation of the Logan Act — an obscure and barely enforced statute that bars private citizens from conducting diplomacy. Flynn was already incoming National Security Advisor at the time. He was later prosecuted for lying to the FBI about those conversations, though it is not clear that he actually did so.
The Flynn investigation was part of a broader inquiry into the Trump campaign begun by the FBI under the outgoing Obama administration — one that Biden knew about, at least in part, because he participated in one of the key meetings.
According to a memorandum by former National Security Advisor Susan Rice, which was later confirmed by former FBI Director James Comey, Biden was present at a January 5, 2017 meeting where President Barack Obama gave instructions to Comey about how to brief President-elect Donald Trump about Russia.

A professor at a New Jersey university is blaming President Trump and his supporters for the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, claiming it’s their fault African-Americans have been dying at a disproportionate rate.
“F— each and every Trump supporter. You absolutely did this. You are to blame,” was among the comments – several of them containing profanity — posted on Twitter this week by Brittney Cooper, an associate professor in the Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University.
In another post, Cooper wrote that she and other African-Americans suspect that recent efforts to reopen the country following stay-at-home orders were “all about a gross necropolitical calculation that it is Black people who are dying disproportionately from COVID.”

Germany Bans Hezbollah, Raids Mosques

Germany on Thursday completely banned Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement from carrying out activities on its soil, as police raided mosques and venues linked to the group.
Like the European Union, Germany had until now only outlawed Hezbollah’s military wing while tolerating its political wing.
But in a shift immediately welcomed by the United States and Israel, the German interior ministry said it now considered the entire movement a “Shiite terrorist organisation”.
“Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation deemed responsible for numerous attacks and kidnappings worldwide,” Interior Minister Horst Seehofer told Germany’s Bild daily.
The interior minister “has banned the operation of the group” in Germany with immediate effect, his spokesman tweeted.
“Even in times of crisis the rule of law is upheld,” he wrote.
Raids were taking place in several places across the country, he added.
Dozens of police and special forces stormed mosques and associations linked to Hezbollah in Bremen, Berlin, Dortmund and Muenster in the early hours of the morning, German media reported.
The Al-Irshad mosque in Berlin was sealed off with at least 16 police vans parked outside, an AFP photographer saw. Masked police officers were seen walking in and out of the mosque.
Although Hezbollah has no official presence in Germany, security forces estimate it has roughly a thousand members in the country.
They are thought to use Germany as a safe haven to make plans, recruit sympathisers and raise funds, including through criminal activities.
The group’s “criminal activities and plannings for attacks are also taking place on German soil,” Seehofer told Bild.
He also recalled that Hezbollah has openly called for “the violent destruction” of the Israeli state.
“It’s part of our historic responsibility that we use all means under the rule of law to act against this,” he said, in a nod to Germany’s responsibility for the Holocaust during World War II.
The United States and Israel have long designated Hezbollah as a terrorist group and urged allies to follow suit.
US ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell welcomed Berlin’s change in stance and called on “all European Union member states to take similar action”.
In Jerusalem, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz praised what he called “a significant step in the global fight against terrorism.” He too urged the European Union “to do the same.”
Britain outlawed Hezbollah’s political wing last year, making membership of the Shiite movement or inviting support for it a crime.
The decision followed outrage over the display of the Hezbollah flag, which features a Kalashnikov assault rifle, at pro-Palestinian demonstrations in London.
The mood began shifting in Germany too with parliament passing a resolution last December that urged the government to ban the group from operating in Germany altogether.
The interior ministry’s prohibition order means the group’s supporters are no longer allowed to display Hezbollah symbols or hold gatherings, and that funds can be frozen.
Hezbollah sympathisers had in recent years waved their flag at the anti-Israel al-Quds rally that is controversially held in Berlin each year.
Hezbollah, which backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s civil war, is seen by Israel as an Iranian proxy, seeking to extend the Islamic republic’s military reach to the Jewish state’s northern border.
Israeli warplanes have carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria over the past few years against what Israel says are Iranian and Hezbollah targets.
Hezbollah was established in 1982 during Lebanon’s civil war.
It is now a major political party in the country, where it holds a majority in parliament along with its allies.
Israel and Hezbollah also fought a 2006 war.

According to police spokesperson Theo Cablitz 150 police were involved in the investigation with “four locations” being targeted in the area.

The university initially said it expected to make the records “available to the public two years after Biden’s last day in elected public office.” In April 2019, just hours before Biden announced his current presidential bid, the university changed its mind, and said the papers wouldn’t be released until either December 31, 2019 or until two years after Biden “retires from public life,” whichever comes later.
This week, both The Atlantic and The Washington Post argued that Biden should instruct the university to turn over the records, saying they “could contain confirmation of any complaint Ms. Reade made, either through official congressional channels or to the three other employees she claims she informed not specifically of the alleged assault but more generally of harassment.”
The University of Delaware’s charter states that the Board of Trustees has “entire control and management of the affairs of the university,” and notes that no university bylaws “shall diminish or reduce the Board’s plenary authority over all matters related to the control and management of the affairs of the University.”
The current chairman of the board at the University of Delaware, John Cochran, is a longtime Biden donor and former CEO of MBNA.

Ottawa is set to ban a number of assault-style firearms and weapons involved in mass shootings in Canada and abroad, including the Ruger Mini-14 that was used during the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, federal officials say.
The formal announcement of the gun ban is expected by the end of the week, but the key measures have already been approved by cabinet, the officials said. In addition to the gun ban, according to officials, the government will be putting forward further gun control measures in a coming legislative package.
Along with the Ruger Mini-14, the government will ban the AR-15 and similar types of firearms that have been used in a number of mass shootings in the United States, officials said. They added that the ban will also include the CZ Scorpion, the Swiss Arms Classic Green, the Beretta Cx4 Storm, the Robinson Armament XCR and the Sig Sauer SIG MCX, among others, as well as firearms that use the same platforms.

Last Monday evening there was an uproar in the quarantine accommodation for asylum seekers in Puchheim. Refugees threw food around.
About 20 residents are accommodated there. Because they could infect others with the coronavirus, they are not allowed to leave the building. The refugees no longer receive money for shopping, but food is delivered to their doorstep.
Obviously there is no understanding for this among a group of refugees: They have rabidly stopped the food from being distributed. The police had to intervene. The food was left on the property to de-escalate. When the police and staff of the district administration office left, all the delivered apples, bread and milk were thrown over the fence. The district office is responsible for accommodation. District Administrator Thomas Karmasin: “The behaviour of the troublemakers is completely unacceptable and will be investigated thoroughly.” The quarantine was ordered by the health department. Violations are not a trivial offence. Efforts were being made to find accommodations and provide food at short notice. “I actually expect this form of hospitality to be appreciated accordingly,” says Karmasin. Puchheim’s mayor Norbert Seidl agrees regarding the handling of food – and the respect for those who provide it. “I am appalled, such behaviour is not acceptable. No matter if you are frustrated or sick or whatever.”

Nine-year-old Swiss coronavirus victim turns out to be 109 due to filing error
Switzerland’s outdated medical reporting system still relies on fax and manual data entry, which has led to a number of confusing mistakes.
On Saturday, it appeared Switzerland had recorded its first child victim of the coronavirus, until the victim was found to be 109 rather than 9.
The reason? The country’s outdated medical record-keeping system, which relies primarily on fax rather than electronic record-keeping, had recorded that the victim was born in 1911 rather than 2011.
Over the same week, a similar error saw one 87-year-old victim recorded as being 27 years of age – due to a similar failing.
Children and young people have been largely unaffected by the virus in Switzerland and elsewhere – meaning that the reports represented a significant departure from the existing data in Switzerland. As at April 29th, there have been just under 1,700 deaths in Switzerland due to the virus – however nobody under the age of 30 has died in Switzerland and only six people between the ages of 30 and 50 have passed away due to Covid-19.

Indian troops targeted Pakistani posts with automatic and heavy weapons in the Kailer sector, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday. Two civilians and one army serviceman allegedly died in the cross-border firing.
The Pakistani Army responded effectively, resulting in heavy losses for Indian troops, ISPR said, adding that “during an exchange of intense fire, a 34-year-old soldier and resident of the Karak district, died”. In the Rakchikri sector Indian Army troops deliberately targeted the civilian population, Pakistan alleged.
Due to indiscriminate fire in the village of Kirni, a girl aged 16, and a woman, 52, died while a 10-year-old boy and a 55-year-old woman were injured.
On Wednesday, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, during a visit to the Line of Control (LoC), said the Indian Army will always get a “befitting response” to ceasefire violations along the LoC.
General Bajwa was told about the latest “violations” by Indian forces “deliberately targeting innocent civilians along the LoC” and the army’s “response”.
India and Pakistan have been engaged in relentless cross-border firefights since the beginning of this month, resulting in the deaths of at least half a dozen civilians from both sides. Dozens more have been injured due to the skirmishes.
The two south Asian rivals have engaged in artillery firing on a nearly daily basis. India has been accused of 805 ceasefire violations and Pakistan of 900 so far.
The already tense relations between the two countries began to deteriorate even further due the February 2019 dogfight but hit a new low with the abrogation of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, in August.”

The Fourth Geneva Convention aims to protect civilians in time of war and stipulates the international law and standards that, in an internal armed conflict, govern the conduct of the parties, including government forces.
Pakistan’s scathing remarks against the Indian government over alleged human rights violations in Kashmir come months after the country scrapped Article 370 of the Indian constitution in August last year. This ended the autonomous status of the region and merged it with the Indian Union. Both India and Pakistan govern the disputed territory of Kashmir in part but claim it in full.
The Modi government was recently subjected to heavy criticism for introducing new domicile rules on the Indian side of Kashmir by opening up high-category government jobs in the Jammu and Kashmir administration for every citizen of the country, in contrast to the previous norm that reserved state jobs only for locals. Succumbing to pressure from local and opposition parties, the government reversed the order and made the jobs out of bounds for non-residents.
In another development, the federal government has also decided to undertake a delimitation exercise in Kashmir, which would facilitate the re-organisation of electoral constituencies in the state. Speculation is rife that it would alter the balance of power towards the Jammu region of the state, which is dominated by Hindus.

“The US secretary of state previously announced that Washington will be going to great lengths to prevent Iran from buying conventional weapons even if the UN embargo on them is lifted.
The UN embargo on conventional weapons sales to Iran, which expires in October 2020, can’t be extended despite US efforts to prevent its expiration, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister has stated.
“For us, the case of the existing ban on arms deliveries to and from Iran was closed with the adoption of Resolution 2231. The embargo regime expires in October this year”, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated.
Ryabkov went on to blame the US for its selective approach to Resolution 2231. He recalled that Washington itself had stopped adhering to its provisions two years ago and has since spared no effort to prevent other nations from remaining in compliance with the resolution by introducing unilateral sanctions.
“Instead of discussing which provisions of Resolution 2231 could be used to achieve certain political goals, the US would be better off ensuring the full and comprehensive implementation of the provisions of this resolution, and return to full compliance with the JCPOA”, the Deputy Foreign Minister added.
UN Resolution 2231 adopted back in 2015 alongside the Iran nuclear deal, prohibited the sale of conventional weapons to the Islamic Republic until 18 October 2020 and separately the sale of missiles until 2023. However, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated yesterday that Washington is planning to do anything in its power to extend the ban beyond October 2020 and will apply to the UN to do that.
Pompeo mulled resorting to a mechanism that renews international sanctions against the Islamic Republic by declaring that it violated the nuclear deal inked in 2015, but was later abandoned by the US in 2018. The secretary of state claims the US is still formally a party to the deal and that Washington will seek help from its European allies, signatories to the deal, in this matter. UN inspections, however, revealed that Iran complied with the deal as it promised in 2015.”

“POLICE have released CCTV images in the hunt for a thug who raped a woman on waste land near to a tram station.
The victim was attacked at the back of Winson Green Outer Circle Metro station in Birmingham at around 7.15pm on April 14. Police have stepped up patrols in the area while specialist officers are supporting the victim.
British Transport Police (BTP) has released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to who is believed to have “information vital to their investigation.”
Detective Inspector Granville Sellers said: “This is a very serious incident and I would like to reassure the public that since it was reported we’ve had officers carrying out vital investigative work and providing the victim with support.
“We ask anyone who knows the man in the image to contact us immediately.”

“An equalites watchdog has warned the body in charge of school exams that not enough is being done to stop ‘unconscious bias’ against black and ethnic minority students (BAME) when teachers award grades for GCSEs and A-levels cancelled in the coronavirus crisis.
Ofqual have set out the grading-process this summer by instructing schools and colleges to award students with a grade that reflects what they would have achieved if they sat their exams.
Ofqual and exam boards insisted they will do their utmost to ensure grades awarded are as fair as possible by putting all centre assessment grades through an external standardisation process.
However, the EHRC have hit out at Ofqual by claiming that their proposals for mitigating bias did not go far enough.
‘Our view is that this guidance in itself will not address the risk of unconscious or conscious bias by exam centres predicting grades for students,’ they said in a statement as per TES.
The EHRC called on the Government to issue guidance on ‘the approach which teachers should take to predicting grades in order to minimise the risk of bias.
It has also suggested that a student’s ethnic background, as a requirement, be provided to exam boards and Ofqual to check for systematic advantages or disadvantages once results have been handed out.
‘Following this process, Ofqual should publish a report evaluating the predicted grades process and outcomes for pupils,’ the EHRC added in a statement.
‘If the evaluation reveals higher than average disparities for pupils with protected characteristics, these should be investigated thoroughly, with appropriate remedial action taken.’
The EHRC have also raised concerns that pupils needed a ‘meaningful and timely route of appeal’.
Ofqual are working with the Secretary of State for Education on appeal procedures and have said that students who disagree with their predicted A-Level or GCSE results will be able to sit exams in either autumn or summer 2021, and will be able to use the higher of the two grades.”

“The European Commission will not take measures against the Hungarian government over its emergency coronavirus legislation, despite lurid allegations that Hungary had become a “dictatorship” overnight by opponents of Viktor Orban’s government.
Legal experts within the European Commission have conceded that there is no basis for a case against the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for, as had been claimed by some, violations of the rights of the Hungarian people.
Reviewing the findings of their investigation, the Commission also acknowledged that other countries in the European Union, such as France, have enacted strict lockdown measures that restrict various rights to protect public health.
Hungary’s Ambassador to the Vatican, Eduard Habsburg, reacted to the Commission announcement with tongue in-cheek sarcasm, saying: “But, but …all the media have told us for WEEKS that Hungary is basically a dictatorship… all this is VERY confusing…”
The Ambassador’s comments followed others in early April by a senior Hungarian Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Tamas Deutsch, who made the point — now accepted by the EU — that nations across the continent had enacted extraordinary laws to defeat the coronavirus.
While this was accepted as necessary in other EU member states, only Hungary was singled out for criticism for taking steps taken elsewhere but left unremarked.
Previously, several prominent globalist media figures and politicians had criticised Hungary for its emergency legislation, with members of the European People’s Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament, of which Orbán’s Fidesz is a member, calling for their Hungarian colleagues to be expelled.
“The fight against Covid-19 requires extensive measures, however, the virus cannot be used as a pretext to extend the state of emergency indefinitely. We fear that Prime Minister Orbán will use his newly achieved power to further extend the government’s grip on civil society,” a letter addressed to EPP president Donald Tusk said in early April.
Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice went even further. Rice, who served during the administration of former president Barack Obama, called on Brussels to expel Hungary from the European Union altogether.
On Wednesday, Hungarian Secretary of State for International Communication and Relations Zoltán Kovács released a statement saying that lockdown measures could soon begin to be lifted and that the country was now in a “balanced situation”.”

“Greece’s migration ministry says Finland has agreed to take in 100 unaccompanied refugee children and 30 adults, expanding the number of European countries which have begun taking in young asylum-seekers from Greece.
Greece’s Migration and Asylum ministry said Thursday the agreement came in a call between deputy minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos and senior Finnish Interior Ministry official Olli-Poika Parviainen, adviser to Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo.
In February, the Finnish Interior Ministry said it would take up to 175 asylum-seekers from camps in Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta “to alleviate the humanitarian situation” of refugees in the Mediterranean members of the European Union.
The children, and the adults who will be reunited with family members already in Finland, will be relocated in the coming weeks, by the end of May, Greece’s ministry said, adding this was “a decision of practical solidarity” by the Nordic country.
Tens of thousands of refugees and migrants, including thousands of unaccompanied children, are living in squalid conditions in overcrowded camps on several Greek islands after arriving from the nearby Turkish coast. Many more are housed in camps, apartments and other shelters across the mainland.
The government has reached out to other EU countries to help share the burden, and in recent weeks 12 children were flown to Luxembourg and 47 to Germany.
Greece is seeking to have 1,600 unaccompanied children relocated to other EU countries.”

TORONTO — The Emergency Department is usually one of the busiest areas of any hospital, but now many ERs are full of empty beds, as patients with ailments and injuries unrelated to coronavirus are avoiding hospitals due to pandemic fears.
“It’s so strange to walk through an emergency room with so many empty beds,” Dr. Gaurav Puri of Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket told CTV News.

A Washington Post poll shows that Hispanics are the strongest advocates for a near-total halt to legal immigration during the coronavirus epidemic and economic crash.
Sixty-nine percent of Hispanics said yes when they were asked, “Would you support … temporarily blocking nearly all immigration into the United States during the coronavirus outbreak?” Just 30 percent of Hispanics oppose the shutdown.
In contrast, 67 percent of whites backed the shutdown, partly because 45 percent of “liberals” opposed the policy.
The survey of 1,008 adults was taken from April 21-26 by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland, after President Donald Trump announced April 22 that he would trim immigration to help Americans gain jobs in the coronavirus recovery.

IMF calls on world to make green recovery from COVID-19
Taking measures now to fight climate crisis not just nice to have but must-have, says IMF head
Fiscal measures implemented by governments against the novel coronavirus need to be harmonized to combat climate change and ensure an environmentally sustainable recovery from the pandemic, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Wednesday.
“If this recovery is to be sustainable—if our world is to become more resilient —we must do everything in our power to promote a green recovery,” said Kristalina Georgieva.
Georgieva noted that taking measures now to fight the climate crisis is not just a “nice-to-have” but a must-have if we are to leave a better world for our children.
“When governments provide financial lifelines to carbon-intensive companies, they should mandate commitments to reduce carbon emissions,” she said.
Recalling the 2008 global financial crisis, she said some automakers committed to higher fuel efficiency standards then.
“With oil prices at record-low levels, now is the time to phase out harmful subsidies,” she said, adding governments need to prioritize investment in green technologies, clean transport, sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
She highlighted that in the energy sector alone, the IMF estimates that a low-carbon transition would require an investment of $2.3 trillion every year for a decade.

Georgieva emphasized that the world should focus on using green bonds and other forms of sustainable finance.
“In light of the extended use of government guarantees, part of them can be deployed to mobilize private finance for green investment,” she noted.
Financial firms have to be mandated to better disclose climate risks in their lending and investment portfolios, she added.
She also said that better ways of pricing in climate risk should be found.
“New IMF analysis shows that over the past 50 years, climate-related disasters have had only a modest effect on equity markets. Clearly, many investors have yet to face up to the new climate reality.”

Georgieva warned that a substantially higher carbon price is needed to encourage climate-smart investment and to accelerate the shift to cleaner fuels and more energy efficiency.
She noted the current global carbon price is only $2 per ton, way below the levels needed to keep global warming under 2 degrees Celsius, which the IMF estimated to be $75 per ton.
This transition must be fair and growth-friendly, she said.
“For example, carbon tax revenues can be used to provide upfront assistance to poorer households, lower burdensome taxes, and support investments in health, education and infrastructure.”

Michigan Muslims hold Ramadan lights contest as COVID-19 disrupts celebrations
Members of the Muslim community in Dearborn, Michigan came up with an unusual way to enjoy Ramadan, by hosting a festive lights contest, as COVID-19 restrictions prevent typical celebrations.
Footage filmed on Wednesday shows Dearborn houses, yards and terraces decorated with string lights and star and crescent signs, the symbol of Islam, intended to lift spirits as residents are forced to stay home rather than enjoy the usual collective celebrations.
Locals have been invited nominate their homes or those of their neighbours by submitting pictures of their decorations online, by documentarian Razi Jafri working with the Michigan Muslim Community Council.
Members of the public will be able to vote on the ten best homes per district, with judges later picking the final winners, who will receive a gift basket and a certificate when the contest comes to an end before Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan.
With a population of 100,000 people, Dearborn is one of the largest Muslim enclave in the US.
Ramadan is one of the most important festivities in Islam, characterised by abstaining from eating and drinking along the day in an effort to improve spiritual devotion. Depending on the lunar calendar, in 2020 the observation falls on the period between April 23 and May 23.
USA: “They seem to work for China” – Trump slams WHO over COVID-19
US President Donald Trump attacked the World Health Organization again on Wednesday, saying that “they seem to work for China.”
Speaking alongside Lousiana Governor John Bel Edwards in the White House, Trump added that the WHO “misled us. I don’t know. They must’ve known more than they knew.”
“Either they didn’t know or they didn’t tell us, or – you know, right now they’re literally a pipe organ for China,” the president added.
Trump warned that his government would soon be issuing a “recommendation” on both the WHO and China, adding that there were lots of other organisations to whom the US could redirect its currently suspended WHO funding.
The president has repeatedly criticised the WHO for its response to the coronavirus outbreak and earlier in the month suspended payments to the organisation.

The World Health Organization is balking at a Canadian parliamentary committee’s request for key WHO adviser Bruce Aylward to testify before MPs and explain the global body’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Matt Jeneroux, Conservative health critic and one of the vice-chairs of the House of Commons health committee, said he plans to seek support from other parties to take the request to the next level. He said he will propose the committee try to compel testimony from the Canadian epidemiologist by employing a rarely used power of summons.
“We want this committee to be taken seriously. Dr. Aylward is a key figure in a lot of this and this committee has been tasked with understanding the response to COVID-19,” Mr. Jeneroux said.
Don Davies, NDP health critic and another member of the committee, said he would support issuing a summons.
“I’m disappointed in the WHO’s position, especially considering we are seeking information from a Canadian official,” Mr. Davies said. “Their officials should be transparent and accountable to the nations they serve.”
House of Commons committees have the power to summon a person to appear as a witness, although that power is limited to individuals on Canadian soil. That means a summons could be served on them when they arrived in Canada.
Dr. Aylward, who headed a WHO team to China’s Hubei province, the epicentre of the pandemic, was scheduled to testify before MPs two weeks ago but cancelled on short notice, citing an urgent matter related to COVID-19. MPs on the Commons health committee then sent a new invitation, asking him to testify by teleconference on April 29. The committee had already warned the WHO that it would be willing to summon him.
However, Mr. Jeneroux said Sigrid Kranawetter, principal legal counsel at the World Health Organization, informed the committee that Dr. Aylward would not be appearing but that the committee could send written questions to the global body.
On Wednesday, the WHO echoed this message. Asked whether Dr. Aylward would testify, the body indicated he would not. “Over the past weeks, WHO has received requests for information from several different governments, parliamentary bodies and officials,” spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said in an e-mail to The Globe and Mail. “With a view to facilitating the work of the committee, WHO has offered to consider any list of technical questions from the committee.”
Liberal MP Ron McKinnon, who chairs the Commons health committee, said it will be up to members of the committee to decide on whether to summon Dr. Aylward. He said while he is keen to hear testimony from a representative of the WHO, he will however encourage MPs to accept the WHO’s offer of making written responses to questions.
The WHO is facing increasing questions about its relationship with China and whether the organization properly notified and prepared the world for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The WHO has defended its conduct, noting it alerted the public in early January. But the organization has refused to denounce China for concealing information about COVID-19, even after it became clear authorities there had muzzled doctors.
The WHO’s Dr. Aylward has praised China’s response to COVID-19, even telling a media briefing in February: “If I had COVID-19, I’d want to be treated in China.”
The Conservatives’ Mr. Jeneroux would like Dr. Aylward to explain why the WHO has been shutting out Taiwan, which has outshone many countries in its fight against COVID-19, by barring it from participating in the organization even as an observer.
Mr. Jeneroux said he wants to ask about an incident last month where Dr. Aylward was being interviewed by a Hong Kong reporter and the WHO adviser declined to answer questions about Taiwan’s exclusion.
Taiwan is not a member of the WHO because of the objections of China, which claims the democratic and separately ruled island as its own. That means Taiwan is excluded from emergency meetings and important global briefings for WHO members.
Canada has called for Taiwan to be granted observer status at the WHO – an urging that Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland repeated Wednesday. “Canada believes Taiwan’s role as an observer in the WHO assembly meetings is in the interests of the international health community,” she told the Commons.
In late January, even after Chinese authorities locked down Wuhan, the city where COVID-19 first came to public attention and the WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern, the highest level of alert, the global body’s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries against closing borders. “There is no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade,” he said. Some countries, including Canada, followed the advice, waiting another seven weeks to ban foreign travellers.
