CBC – 3 people linked to Winnipeg’s National Microbiology Laboratory infected with coronavirus
Site responsible for dangerous pathogens notifies staff of investigation
Two employees at the National Microbiology Laboratory and one of their close contacts have tested positive for the coronavirus, staff at the Winnipeg facility were told via email on Thursday.
The three are now in isolation, lab executive director Steven Guercio said in the email, which was obtained by CBC News.
“Manitoba Health has initiated contact tracing,” Guercio said, referring to the practice of finding out everyone an infected person could have contacted prior to their test.
“As a proactive measure, Facility Occupational Health and Safety has initiated a risk assessment and will ask potential at-risk contacts to isolate at home pending full contact tracing by Manitoba Health,” Guercio added.
“Close contacts identified through contact tracing will receive direction from MB Health on testing and isolation requirements.”
Guercio also told staff the lab’s management “understands that this news will create concern,” and advised them to contact employee assistance if needed.
All staff were also instructed to wash their hands on their way out of the building.

Guercio’s office deferred comment to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), which is responsible for the microbiology lab.
A Manitoba Shared Health spokesperson did the same, adding the province only comments on infections when there is a public health concern.
A PHAC spokesperson said all procedures for cleaning and disinfection of work areas and common spaces have been followed.
Employees continue to practise effective public health measures, including physical distancing, hand washing and respiratory etiquette, Eric Morrissette said in an email statement.
“It is not unexpected that we would see cases amongst our workforce as COVID-19 infection is circulating in our community,” he said.
PHAC has contingency plans to make sure the lab’s essential operations can continue, even with sick or absent employees, and employees who have asked to work from home — and who are able to do their duties remotely — are doing so.
“We wish our employees a speedy recovery and are thinking of them and their families during this difficult time,” Morrisette said.
The head of the union representing scientists and researchers doesn’t know if any of the infected people are her members, but Debi Daviau said she’s been told at least one is a lab worker.
Daviau, president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, said Health Canada has done contact tracing on all three — any close contacts were tested and sent home, and are expected to get their test results tonight or tomorrow.
Non-close contacts were asked to stay at work for now but they were also tested. If they are positive, they will be sent home for self-quarantine.
Research includes coronavirus
Work at the lab includes research on SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Researchers are trying to find an appropriate animal model for research as they work on a vaccine and treatment for the respiratory illness, Daviau said.
They are also doing research on how to sterilize N95 masks for reuse.
“They are working around the clock. Their work is critical. They are working with the virus, so the potential for exposure is high,” she said.
“These members are some of Canada’s unsung heroes.”
The NML had arranged for a drive-thru testing site at the lab for staff and their families, Daviau said, adding PHAC is handling the situation well.
“PHAC responded rapidly, and fortunately, due to onsite infectious disease experts, they’ve implemented responsive testing, tracing and isolation measures. We appreciate the urgent action and support for the safety of the employees at the site,” she said.
Some staff at the lab have chosen to work at home during this time, but Daviau said others have told her “the work is too important” to close the building.
Meanwhile, the union representing staff including lab technicians as well as building operations, administrative and program staff is waiting to find out if any of its members have been infected.
“Our concern is, first and foremost, the health and safety of our members and all employees at the NML,” Shimen Fayad, acting national president of the Union of Health and Environment Workers, said in an email.

Several politicians such as Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro’s son have repeatedly associated the virus with China, “calling it China’s fault and saying than China should bear responsibility”, Nature said in a piece, calling on readers to “exercise more care” as failing to do so can harm young people from Asia and hurt “diversity in campuses”.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump have repeatedly called COVID-19 a “Chinese virus”, while now he accuses China of concealing data on the outbreak and threatens to cut funding for the World Health Organization because of the agency being “China-centric”.
The World Health Organization introduced in 2015 its new guidelines that urge to “follow the best practices when naming a disease”, such as using generic descriptive terms, preferably short or acronyms, and avoid using long, specific terms so that no cultural, regional, social or national group is offended.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus believes the pandemic needs a whole-of government and society response, and to that end is seeking a new funding lifeline outside its existing United Nations funding stream.
It follows a similar WHO call in February which sought $675 million in “special, one-off funding” to deliver two months worth of direct aid to China and international agencies.
Now it is back again and asking for more.
“For the past 100 days, our unwavering commitment has been to serve all people of the world with equity, objectivity and neutrality. That will continue to be our sole focus in the days, weeks and months ahead,” Dr Tedros said.
The appeal and strategy plan will commence in coming days, Reuters reports.
The WHO financial plea comes against a backdrop of controversy after U.S. President Donald Trump criticised the organisation over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and suggested his administration might re-evaluate U.S. funding.
Trump accused WHO of being “China-centric” and criticised its many missteps, nothing it responded to the virus very slowly and appeared deferential to China’s wishes in all its dealings, as Breitbart News reported.
The United States remains the biggest single overall donor to the globalist body, contributing more than $400 million in 2019 to the agency, roughly 15 percent of its budget.
In comparison, China’s contribution was about $44 million.
The WHO appeal for funding came within 24-hours of Consumer Choice Center, a global consumer advocacy group, launching its own campaign to defund it.
“President Trump’s decision speaks to the larger inefficiencies and issues of transparency and accountability that have plagued the World Health Organization in recent years,” Yaël Ossowski, deputy director at the Consumer Choice Center, said in a statement he distributed to the press.
“While the failures of the WHO have only recently gotten publicity, this has been a long time coming,” Ossowski said.”

NEW YORK, April 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Nic Talbott put himself on the frontline of the new coronavirus pandemic – he got a job at his local Walmart in the midwestern U.S. state of Ohio. His first choice was to enlist in the military but, as a transgender man, he was not allowed.
Sunday marks the first anniversary of a ban on trans people joining the U.S. Armed Forces. But with most recruitment stations closed due to coronavirus lockdowns, calls are growing for President Donald Trump’s policy to be reversed.
“I almost feel like a caged animal – I’m just kind of standing here on the sidelines watching everything happen in front of me,” Talbott, 26, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
“I am capable, qualified and willing to do more, but there’s this barrier in front of me that makes absolutely no sense,” said Talbott, a plaintiff in one of four lawsuits filed in federal courts challenging the ban.
Former President Barack Obama enacted a landmark policy in 2016 that allowed trans people to serve openly for the first time, five years after the military ended its ban on gay men and women serving openly.
On April 12, 2019, the Trump administration froze the recruitment of trans soldiers although serving personnel were allowed to remain.
Trump said the military needed to focus on “decisive and overwhelming victory” without being burdened by the “tremendous medical costs and disruption” of having trans personnel.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Defense said in emailed comments: “The Department is not considering adjusting existing policy.”
Thousands of military personnel have been deployed to fight COVID-19, distributing medical supplies, cleaning nursing homes and removing victims’ bodies, with more than 16,000 U.S. deaths as of Thursday, the second highest in the world.
“It’s probably the most frustrating thing I’ve had to deal with in my entire life,” said John Roberts, 24, a trans man who wants to join the National Guard, a reserve branch of the military that has been deployed to help with the pandemic.
“I’m ready, I’m here, I’m willing, I’m qualified. I want to get out there. And I want to help.”

Some 1.3 million active personnel serve in the U.S. military, Department of Defense data shows.
There are no official figures on the number of trans individuals in the military but the Rand Corporation, a U.S. policy research institute, estimated in 2016 that about 2,450 active service members were trans.
As the coronavirus has severely curtailed traditional recruitment efforts, such as canvassing high schools, with widespread lockdowns keeping people indoors, recruiters are using online methods, like social media, to attract recruits.
“Phone calls, digital communities – those generally account for something on the order of say 20% of the time that recruiters spend prospecting,” said Gunnery Sgt. Justin Kronenberg, a spokesman for the Marine Corps Recruiting Command.
“Something that used to be a supporting tactic has now become the main effort.”
The army missed its recruitment goal in 2018 for the first time in 13 years although it did meet its target last year.
Kronenberg, who works for the commanding general of Marine Corps Recruiting Command, Major-General James Bierman, said online recruitment was “more challenging” than meeting potential service members in person.
“We feel strongly that the decision to become a U.S. marine is an important one, best made after talking to our recruiters in a professional, face-to-face setting,” he said in emailed comments.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week eased a 12-month ban on men who have had sex with men to three months after a dramatic slump in donations as the coronavirus crisis forced the cancellation of blood drives.
Lambda Legal, an LGBT+ rights group, said the government should make similar reforms in the military and allow trans Americans to serve.
“The dangers of discrimination come into sharpest focus in all-hands-on-deck moments like this, when we need every capable and talented person available,” said Peter Renn, a lawyer with the organization.
“But the government has excluded a group of people based on a characteristic unrelated to merit … the military is essentially cutting off its nose to spite its face.”
For Kaycen Bradley, 22, who is helping to train aspiring military recruits as he waits for the ban to be lifted, the restrictions do not make sense.
“There’s a lot of skepticism around whether or not we’re able to do it, but at the end of the day, I’ve surpassed most of the cisgender men that I train with,” he said, using a term that describes someone whose gender identity matches their birth sex.
“I’m able to do anything they’re able to do, if not more … if you’re holding back people that means you’re not really worried about the military at all, or about our safety and defense.”

BREITBART – Science Magazine Apologizes for Associating Chinese Virus with China
Nature, one of the world’s leading journals of biological sciences, urged scientists in an editorial this week to embrace the technical name favored by China’s government for the deadly disease that emerged from the Chinese city of Wuhan.
“We must all do everything we can to avoid and reduce stigma; not associate COVID-19 with particular groups of people or places; and emphasize that viruses do not discriminate — we are all at risk,” said the editorial in Nature magazine, headlined “Stop the coronavirus stigma now.”
The op-ed apologized for associating the Chinese disease with China:
When the World Health Organization (WHO) announced in February that the disease caused by the new coronavirus would be called COVID?19, the name was quickly adopted by organizations involved in communicating public-health information. As well as naming the illness, the WHO was implicitly sending a reminder to those who had ERRONEOUSLY been associating the virus with Wuhan and with China in their news coverage— including Nature. That we did so was an error on our part, for which we take responsibility and apologize.
The global scientific community agrees that the virus is naturally occurring and likely originated in a bat or pangolin, an Asian anteater species. No evidence has surfaced that the virus appeared in humans anywhere before the first documented cases in Wuhan, China. The Chinese government initially shut down a “wet market” in the city, where wild animals are sold for consumption, but later claimed the virus was artificially engineered by the U.S. Army, without providing evidence.
The apology undermines the efforts by activists and U.S. politicians to prevent the emergence of another disease by imposing reforms on China’s ruling oligarchy. The oligarchy detained doctors who shared tips on communicable diseases online in the early days of the outbreak, and may be responsible for as many as 95 percent of coronavirus cases.
The Nature editorial hinted at economic losses for the publishing firm and universities if it were to stick with place-based names for the killer disease, such as “Wuhan virus” or “the Chinese SARS-2.”
“More than 700,000 Chinese undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. students studying at universities outside China,” the editorial said, adding:

In the United States, science managers are trying to preserve their supply of Chinese “student” scientists, many of whom serve as skilled, low-wage “post-doc” workers in government-funded laboratories.
The United States’ low-wage science sector is coming under increased pressure as science managers recognize the widespread theft and cheating by Chinese scientists. Also, the imported and underpaid Chinese workers have helped push many Americans away from the first few steps in science careers.
In response, U.S. managers are increasingly trying to recruit Indian and other foreign citizens as cheap laboratory workers, with mixed success. Meanwhile, Indian activists are cheering the return of Indian scientists to India.
The willingness of U.S. science managers to help train foreign scientists has helped those countries develop their technology sectors. For example, China and India have won a huge share of the market for producing pharmaceuticals from U.S. companies. This control has caused tensions during the current pandemic. President Donald Trump had to ask India’s president to approve the export of hydroxychloroquine pills on April 6 after the Indian government announced it would keep all of the medicines for its own population of almost 1.5 billion people.
“I called Prime Minister Modi of India this morning … and I said I’d appreciate it if they would release the amounts that we ordered,” Trump told reporters April 4.
Some U.S. science managers are trying to hire more Americans. “We have prospered because of [foreign labor]. But guess what? That’s not going to happen anymore,” warned Marcia McNutt, a geophysicist who is the president of the National Academy of Sciences. She said February 6:
[Foreign scientists] have great opportunities back in their own countries now because everyone’s copying us. There are great opportunities in China, growing opportunities everywhere else. We can’t count on that [importation policy] to make us great anymore.
We’re going to have to educate our own.
However, most U.S. science managers show little desire to change the current cheap labor policy.
“Science and technology in this country are dependent on immigration,” said Neal Lane, who ran the federal National Science Foundation from 1993 to 1998. “It really is what has made this country a leader in science and technology and innovation in the world.”

Members of a scientific committee told the White House in a letter Tuesday that while lab-based studies support the claim that the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease is less effective at higher temperatures, “real world” studies are less conclusive, and warm weather might anyway not curb the spread much because so few people are immune.
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) committee members said in the letter, which was addressed to Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, that while controlled experiments showed temperature reduced the viability of the virus, studies done in the natural environment were subject to “significant caveats,” mostly around data quality, and time and location limitations.
The NAS report called for more studies to reach more conclusive results, as well as continued public interventions to curb the spread of the outbreak.

Smithfield Foods Closes US Pork Plant Due to CCP Virus

CHICAGO—Smithfield Foods Inc, the world’s biggest pork processor, said on Thursday it is temporarily closing a plant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, because of the CCP virus, the latest disruption to the U.S. food supply chain from the outbreak.
The company will suspend operations in a large section of the pork plant on April 11 and completely shutter it on April 12 and April 13, after employees tested positive for the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, commonly known as the novel coronavirus, according to a statement.
