This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

    • Coronavirus outbreak: WHO chief fiercely defends handling of pandemic after Trump criticism

      The director-general of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, delivered a powerful warning to world leaders to not politicize the response to COVID-19, saying doing so will lead to more deaths.

      “If we want to win, please quarantine politicizing COVID-19,” Tedros said.

      Tedros made the stern comments at a WHO press briefing Wednesday in response to a question about recent criticisms made by U.S. President Donald Trump, defending the organization about what they’ve done since the first known case was brought to their attention 100 days ago.

      “So my advice, three things,” the director-general said, “please, unity at the national level, no using COVID for political points. Second, honest solidarity at the global level. And honest leadership from the U.S. and China.”

      Tedros also got personal, saying he received many criticisms and even death threats over the last three months, but cares more about humanity being insulted with politicizing a virus that has killed more than 60,000 people so far.

      “If you don’t want any more body bags, then you must refrain from politicizing it.”

  3. BREITBART –Graham: There Will Not Be Funding for W.H.O. in Next Appropriations Bill

    On Tuesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “The Story,” Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) vowed that there will not be any funding for the World Health Organization in the next appropriations bill.

    Graham said, “In the next appropriations bill, there’s not going to be any money for the W.H.O. I’m in charge of the appropriations subcommittee. I’m not going to support funding the W.H.O. under its current leadership. They’ve been deceptive, they’ve been slow, and they’ve been Chinese apologists. I don’t think they’re a good investment, under the current leadership, for the United States. And until they change their behavior and get new leadership, I think it’s in America’s best interests to withhold funding.”

  5. TORONTO — BlackBerry Ltd. says its researchers have uncovered how China-backed hackers have been able to extract data from many of the world’s servers for a decade — largely without being noticed by cyber security.

    It says the tactics give the hackers the ability to extract information from huge amounts of valuable data from computers using the Linux operating system, which is used on most of the world’s web servers and cloud servers.

    A 44-page report published by BlackBerry says that five separate groups with links to the Chinese government have been using certain tactics and methods to target Linux systems for a decade.

  10. CAIRO (AP) — Saudi officials said the coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen will begin a cease-fire starting Thursday.

    The officials told journalists Wednesday night the decision was in response to U.N. calls to halt hostilities amid the coronavirus pandemic.

    They said the cease-fire will be for two weeks, during which the coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government will support U.N. efforts to bring the rival parties to the table for peace talks.

  16. Coronavirus in Turkey: Government Targets Doctors

    Since the first coronavirus case in Turkey was officially confirmed on March 11, the number of cases has climbed to 30,217 and Turkey’s death toll to 649, Turkey’s health minister announced on April 6.

    Many medical experts, however, who have called on people in Turkey to take more precautions or who have criticized the government for mishandling the virus crisis have been silenced by authorities.

    Two physicians have been made to apologize after giving information to their colleagues or the public about the threat of coronavirus in the country, and two others have been summoned to appear at police headquarters for statements they made to the media. The doctors, now officially under investigation, are accused of allegedly “creating fear and panic among the people”.

    In mid March we reported that the UN’s International Organization for Migration had halted refugee travel due to the virus crisis, so imagine my surprise this morning when I checked the data for the last two weeks of March and learned we admitted 221 regular refugees and 373 Special Immigrant Visas from Afghanistan in those two weeks.

    For the entire month of March we admitted 1,110 regular refugees and 844 SIVs mostly from Afghanistan that are treated just like refugees except some can choose where they want to live in the US.

    “Legitimate government officials and tribal leaders announced Wednesday that the Iran-backed Houthi militias have suffered heavy losses in fighting in the provinces of Marib, Jawf and Bayda.

    Saudi-led Arab coalition has carried out numerous airstrikes against the Houthis in less than two weeks, the officials said, according to the Associated Press.

    They said the clashes have left more than 270 dead and at least 300 wounded from both sides, with the Houthis suffering heavy losses.

    Abdu Abdullah Magli, spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, said they wrested control of the strategic Hilan mountains, west of Marib about 115 kilometers east of the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa.

    He said the government forces reclaimed the Labnat military camp in Jawf province and were progressing toward the strategic northern city of Hazm, the provincial capital of Jawf.

    The violence flared up late last month after a foiled Houthi drone and missile attack targeting the Saudi capital. Saudi Arabia’s Air Defense Forces said they intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile over Riyadh. Another missile was also intercepted and destroyed over the southern Saudi city of Jizan.

    The missile attack prompted the coalition to launch an intensive air campaign on Sanaa and other areas, to destroy Houthi military targets.”

    “At a 2014 Fox Business panel, Kayleigh McEnany was all smiles. Sitting next to her was Gavin McInnes, the co-founder of the white nationalist group Proud Boys. Her smiles persisted even as he said that Muslims are genetically inferior because of “inbreeding”.

    She also appeared to agree with McInnes when he argued that Muslims are “totally irrational”.

    On Tuesday, she was appointed as Donald Trump’s new White House press secretary, replacing Stephanie Grisham, who held the job for just nine months and did not hold any press briefings.

    McEnany, 31, a Harvard Law graduate who was serving as the Trump campaign’s spokeswoman, is now the US president’s fourth press secretary since he took office early in 2017.

    Siding with a self-avowed white supremacist has not been the only instance that McEnany has made anti-Muslim pronouncements.

    “Obama endlessly preaches tolerance of Islam but never mentions this – ‘Genocide: Christian Population in Iraq Drops 80% in a Decade’,” she wrote on Twitter in 2016, rejecting then-President Barack Obama’s assertion that Islam was a peaceful religion.

    The number of Iraqi Christians has dwindled in recent years largely due to sectarian violence and civil unrest ushered in by former President Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq.

    Defending Trump
    Trump’s new press secretary has also pushed back against the idea that US foreign policy in the Middle East may be contributing to anger that causes militant attacks.

    “US foreign policy has done a lot of good for the Muslim people. I think Bush liberated 15 million Muslims from the hands of dictators,” she said in 2014.

    As a Trump advocate, in 2017, she argued that “deadly political correctness perpetuates terrorism,” berating European governments’ immigration policies.

    “Refusing to utter the words ‘radical Islamic extremism,’ opening the door to millions of half-vetted refugees and decrying the concepts of borders and assimilation have resulted in a culture in crisis – a culture without democratic, freedom-loving identity and constantly under murderous attack from cancers within,” she wrote in a column for the Hill.

    Although she would later add a disclaimer that “most immigrants are good and most Muslims are peaceful”, she ends the piece by backing Trump in his feud with London’s Muslim Mayor Sadiq Khan.

    Trump had attacked Khan over comments taken out of context in which the mayor called for calm after a deadly militant attack in London.

    Khan and Trump had been engaged in a long feud dating back to 2015 when Trump called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”.

    At the time, McEnany also defended Trump’s proposal, stressing that his call for a Muslim ban was temporary.

    On a CNN appearance late in 2016, she said Islam differs from Christianity and Judaism, citing a false assertion that “90 percent of the Quran is in fact a legal doctrine and is Sharia”.

    McEnany is the latest in a long list of Trump appointees that Muslim advocates say hold hostile views towards Islam.

    On Tuesday, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) called for McEnany’s immediate dismissal.

    “Trump’s vetting process continues to turn a blind eye when it comes to bigotry, particularly anti-Muslim hatred,” Robert McCaw, CAIR’s government affairs director, told Middle East Eye.

    “Under normal circumstances, President Trump’s new press secretary wouldn’t have had the opportunity to serve in the White House the moment such bigotry was revealed.

    “Anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant hatred is not a disqualifier to serve in the Trump administration. In fact, it represents its twisted values.”

    The White House did not return MEE’s request for comment.”

  33. Italy closes ports to migrant ships because of coronavirus

    “The Italian government says it will not allow charity ships to disembark migrants and refugees at its ports after ruling that they are not “a place of safety” because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    The decision came by decree late on Tuesday after a ship run by the German NGO Sea-Eye picked up about 150 people off the Libyan coast and headed towards Italy.

    “For the entire duration of the national health emergency caused by the spread of the Covid-19 virus, Italian ports cannot guarantee the requisites needed to be classified and defined as a place of safety,” said the decree, which was signed by Italy’s interior, transport and health ministries.

    The measure effectively shutters Italian ports to rescue boats until at least 31 July, but that deadline might be extended, depending on Italy’s ability to curb the outbreak.

    The closures are particularly worrisome now, as departures from Libya are expected to increase with the onset of good weather.

    While most rescue ships that normally patrol the coast of Libya have halted operations as the world grapples with the spread of the coronavirus, Sea-Eye chose to disembark for its latest rescue operation sometime early last week.

    It rescued the 150 people in two separate missions on 6 April, and posted an announcement on Twitter the next day about the importance of their ongoing operations.

    “Even when life in Europe has almost come to a halt, human rights must be protected,” the group said on Twitter. “Now our guests need a port of safety. #LeaveNoOneBehind”

    ‘Shots were fired’
    In a video posted by the group on Twitter, migrants could be seen jumping ship despite repeated screams of “stop” and “don’t” coming from the crew of the Sea-Eye vessel, the Alan Kurdi, which is named for a three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned in 2015 as his family was trying to reach Europe.

    “During the rescue, a Libyan-flagged speedboat endangered the work of Sea-Eye’s rescue crew. After shots were fired in the air, approximately half of the people on the wooden boat jumped into the water in panic without life jackets and tried to swim towards the Alan Kurdi,” the group said in a statement, adding that it was able to rescue all the passengers onboard.

    Prior to Italy’s formal decree, both the Italian and Maltese governments had warned the Sea-Eye that the countries would not be accepting migrants from rescue ships amid fears of exacerbating the spread of the coronavirus.

    The Sea-Eye said Germany had also warned against continuing its rescue efforts, but Gorden Isler, chairman of rescue group, said 150 cities in Germany have declared their readiness to receive migrants.

    “It must be imaginable and humanly possible to send an aircraft for 150 safety-seeking people to Southern Europe in order to immediately evacuate these people,” he said.”

  34. EXCLUSIVE: Mohammed bin Zayed pushed Assad to break Idlib ceasefire

    “Mohammed bin Zayed (MBZ), the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, is making strenuous and persistent attempts to get Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to break a ceasefire with Turkish-backed rebels in Idlib province, Middle East Eye has been told.

    In recent months, Assad’s forces backed by Russian airpower made significant gains against rebel groups in Syria’s northwestern Idlib, killing hundreds and forcing a million civilians to flee towards the Turkish border in the process.

    Turkey’s military intervened in February, helping balance the conflict until violence was stopped by a Moscow-brokered truce last month.

    However, MBZ both tried to prevent the ceasefire agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from being implemented, and has since called Assad to encourage him to re-launch his offensive, MEE has learned.

    Days before the ceasefire deal was struck in a four-and-a-half-hour meeting in the Kremlin on 5 March, the crown prince sent Ali al-Shamsi, the deputy of MBZ’s brother and national security adviser Tahnoun bin Zayed, to negotiate a deal with Assad in Damascus.

    According to sources familiar with MBZ’s plan, the crown prince agreed to pay Assad $3bn to reignite the offensive against Idlib, the rebels’ last redoubt, $1bn of which was due to be paid before the end of March. By the time the ceasefire was announced, $250m had already been paid up front.

    The deal was negotiated in the strictest secrecy. Abu Dhabi was particularly concerned that the Americans did not get to hear of it. Washington supported the Turkish military’s efforts to confront Assad’s forces in Idlib, and had already expressed its anger with the crown prince over the release of $700m of frozen Iranian assets in October.

    One high-level source told MEE: “During the Idlib clashes, al-Shamsi met Bashar and asked him not to reach an agreement with Erdogan on a ceasefire. This happened just before Erdogan’s meeting with Putin. Assad replied that he needs financial support.

    “He said that Iran has stopped paying because they don’t have cash, and the Russians don’t pay anyway. So he asked for $5bn in direct support for Syria. They agreed on $3bn, $1bn paid before the end of March,” the source added.

    When Assad started to rebuild his forces for a push on Turkish positions in Idlib, the Russians, who monitor military movements on the ground closely in Syria, got wind of the plan.

    “Putin was furious,” the source continued.

    Putin sent his defence minister, Sergei Shoygu, on an unplanned visit to Damascus to stop the Syrian government firing up the offensive again.

    “The message Shoygu delivered was clear: ‘We do not want you to restart this offensive. Russia wants the ceasefire to continue.’ By then the Emiratis had already paid $250m to Damascus,” the source said.

    A senior Turkish official has confirmed that the UAE made such an offer to the Syrian government. “All I can say is that the content of the report is true,” the official said.

    Middle East Eye has approached the UAE authorities for comment.

    Eyes on Tripoli
    Sources told Middle East Eye that MBZ persisted in his attempts to get Assad to break the ceasefire even after Shoygu’s visit. A second tranche of the initial $1bn was delivered to Damascus.

    The crown prince’s motives for paying Assad to re-launch his offensive were twofold.

    Firstly, Abu Dhabi wanted to tie the Turkish army up in a costly war in northwestern Syria. Turkey had just launched its fourth offensive in the country, after Syrian government troops killed 34 Turkish soldiers on 27 February, Ankara’s deadliest day in the nine-year conflict.

    Secondly, MBZ wanted to stretch the resources of the Turkish army and distract Erdogan from successfully defending Tripoli from Khalifa Haftar’s forces in Libya, where Ankara recently came to the aid of the UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).

    As soon as Shoygu quashed Emirati attempts to break the ceasefire, MBZ became anxious that the plan would leak out to the Americans. He needed a cover story for the money he had already paid Damascus and he also wanted to continue to persuade the Syrian government to break the ceasefire. The crown prince called the president in Damascus.

    “The UAE did not tell the Americans. So with all of this, the UAE became very concerned that the news will come out, especially after the fuss about the unfreezing of Iranian assets. That was the reason MBZ called Assad,” the high-level source said.

    News was then released about the conversation between the two leaders. MBZ said on Twitter: “I assured him of the support of the UAE and its willingness to help the Syrian people. Humanitarian solidarity during trying times supersedes all matters, and Syria and her people will not stand alone.”

    Warming relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Syrian government have been public for some time. Though the Emiratis backed the opposition when war broke out in 2011, last year it reopened its Damascus embassy, and officials have made efforts to speak about ties in increasingly effusive language.

    The conversation between the crown prince and Syrian president was more than merely a continuation of this trend, however, and suspicions about the true nature of MBZ’s call arose over its timing.

    MBZ wanted to give the impression that his call was in solidarity with Syria facing the coronavirus outbreak, although when they spoke Damascus was denying any major outbreak in the country.

    According to sources, the crown prince’s main motive for wanting to bog the Turkish army down in Idlib was the situation in Libya.

    The year-long offensive on Tripoli mounted by Haftar’s UAE-backed Libyan National Army has been stalled by Ankara’s deployment of drones, Turkish troops and Syrian mercenaries.

    However for Putin, who also backs Haftar against the GNA in Tripoli, Russia’s strategic alliance with Turkey trumped all other considerations. The maintenance of a ceasefire in Idlib was more important.

    MBZ was thus left with a mess on his hands that he was desperate to clear up, the source said.”

    “A Syrian girl, thought to be about six years old, died yesterday after she was beaten by her father, Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces (ISF) reported.

    The girl was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in the northern city of Tripoli in the early hours of yesterday.

    In a statement, the ISF said: “Immediately after news circulated of the girl’s death due to being severely beaten by father… ISF detained him at the hospital.”

    “During the interrogation… with the father and his wife… it appeared that they were used to beating the girl.”

    Adding that, the coroner found evidence of beating on the girl’s body.

    In recent weeks, activists have raised concerns that the number of domestic violence cases is rising due to the nationwide lockdown…”

    “A man who was caught stealing surgical face masks from a hospital in London has been jailed for three months, police said on Wednesday.

    There has been huge global demand for face masks in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic from health care workers to ordinary citizens, leading many countries to say they have suffered shortages.

    Police said Lerun Hussain, 34, had been detained by security staff at King’s College Hospital in south London as he tried to steal three masks. He pleaded guilty to theft at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.”

    • NBC – “It was the worst 2 weeks of my life”: Woman recovers from coronavirus

      AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – An Amarillo woman who tested positive for COVID-19 is now considered recovered and is sharing her story in an effort to show others how serious the disease is.

      “I was totally out of control, there’s not anything I could do,” said Laura Taylor. “It was the worst two weeks of my life, I’ll just say that.”

      She recently traveled to Egypt. She says it was the trip of a lifetime, but her vacation was cut short due to the coronavirus.

      “[President] Trump had just made the order that no European flights could come back into America in a couple of days,” said Taylor. “So we started scrambling and trying to get together tickets to get back home.”

      It took her three days to get back home. She flew internationally from Cairo to New York and then to Amarillo.

      She and 12 others who went on that trip took it upon themselves to self-quarantine.

      For Taylor, it was only two days until the symptoms hit.

      “I didn’t know who to call,” she said. “Somebody told me to call the public health department, so I did. They said call your doctor, [so I] called my doctor, and she sent me to Exceptional ER there on North Western, because they had the stuff to test me. So, of course, they did the flu [test], the strep [test], the chest x-ray.”

      After the doctor saw her flight plan, she was tested for COVID-19.

      “Within a day, he called me back and said you’ve got it,” she said. “And he said, ‘they’re about to do a news conference, you and one other are positive.’”

      She said the doctor told her she was the first confirmed case in Amarillo. As she quarantined at home, her symptoms grew worse.

      “I started getting a really bad headache,” said Taylor. “Then the headache went from a cough, to sore throat, to nausea, to really bad fatigue… real bad fatigue. It just continually, progressively got worse. [I also had] a low grade fever. The low grade fever was like 99 to 100 for about six days, and then day six was when it got really bad.”

      It wasn’t until she was given hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to treat Malaria, that things started looking up.

      “After I started taking the Malaria medicine, I started to feel a lot better,” she said. “Like, the next day.”

      Tuesday was the first day she didn’t have a fever. While there were 13 people on her trip to Egypt, she was the only person who ended up testing positive for coronavirus.

      “I don’t know where I got it,” said Taylor. “I don’t know if I got it on the Nile River cruise where we were at in Egypt, or if I got it on the international flight from Cairo to New York. I don’t know, but it’s contagious, and it is scary.”

      Her message to others:

      “I’ll be honest, I was one of those when it first started coming out, I was thinking ‘oh, more people are dying from the flu,’ and I didn’t take it that seriously.”

      “If it got me down like that, what would it do to somebody that does have a compromised immune system, or an elderly person or child or anybody?” she said. “It’s not a long time to wait, it’s got a period at the end of it. It’s going to end, but right now, please just stay home if you can.”

    For anyone who may be wondering what one of those “most successful approaches” might look like, consider the following top contender for the contract. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed what is essentially a hi-tech ‘tattoo’ that stores data in invisible dye under the skin. The ‘mark’ would be delivered together with a vaccine, most likely administered by Gavi, the global vaccine agency that also falls under the umbrella of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

    “The researchers showed that their new dye, which consists of nanocrystals called quantum dots… emits near-infrared light that can be detected by a specially equipped smartphone,” MIT News reported.

    And if the reader scrolls to the very bottom of the article, he will find that this study was funded first and foremost by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

    Today, with the global service economy shut down to prevent large groups of infectious humans from assembling, it is easier to imagine a day when people are required to have their infrared ID ‘tattoo’ scanned in order to be granted access to any number of public venues. And from there, it requires little stretch of the imagination to see this same tracking nanotechnology being applied broadly across the global economy, where it could be used to eliminate the use of dirty money. After all, if reusable bags are being outlawed over the coronavirus panic-demic, why should reusable cash get special treatment?

    Writing earlier this month in these pages, geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar provided a compelling argument that the coronavirus, which is driving the world towards a New Great Depression, is “being used as cover for the advent of a new, digital financial system, complete with a forced vaccine cum nanochip creating a full, individual, digital identity.

    As one possible future scenario, Escobar imagined “clusters of smart cities linked by AI, with people monitored full time and duly micro-chipped doing what they need with a unified digital currency…”

    Those fears took on greater significance when Bill Gates sat down over the weekend for a breathtaking interview with CBS This Morning. Gates told host Anthony Mason that mass gatherings might have to be prohibited in the age of coronavirus unless and until a wide scale vaccination program is enacted.

    “What does ‘opening up’ look like,” Gates asked rhetorically before essentially changing the entire social and cultural makeup of the United States in one fell swoop.

    “Which activities, like schools, have such benefit and can be done in a way that the risk of transmission is very low, and which activities, like mass gatherings, maybe, in a certain sense more optional. And so until you’re widely vaccinated those [activities] may not come back at all”

    According to Gates, anything that could be defined as a “mass gathering” – from spectators packed into a stadium for a sporting event, to protesters out on the street in demonstration – would be considered an act of civil disobedience without a vaccine. Little surprise that Gates chose the concept of “mass gathering” to snag all of us, for what is modern democratic society if not one big mass event after another? Indeed, since nobody will want to miss the next big happening, like the Super Bowl, or Comic-Con, or, heaven forbid, Eurovision, millions of people would predictably line up for miles to get their Microsoft-supported inoculation, even if it contains tracking technologies.

    All of this seems like sheer madness when it is remembered that there are other options for defeating the coronavirus than a mandatory global vaccine regime.

    Just last month, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director, told a Senate Subcommittee that over 80 percent of the people who get infected by the coronavirus “spontaneously recover” without any medical intervention. This makes one wonder why the global lockdown was designed for everyone instead of just the sick and elderly. Meanwhile, the drug hydroxychloroquine, which has been downplayed in the media despite being named as the most effective coronavirus treatment among physicians in a major survey, is starting to get a fresh look.

    Just this week, following Nevada’s lead, Michigan just reversed course and is now the second democratic state to request the anti-malarial drug from the Trump administration.

    So now it looks as though we are off to the races to see what will become the approved method of fighting the global pandemic – a hastily developed vaccine that may actually worsen the effects of the disease in those who contract it, or the already proven inexpensive drug hydroxychloroquine.

    If the winner turns out to be a global vaccine, possibly one that carries ID nanotechnology, don’t expect the wealthy to be lining up with their kids to be the first to get it. In 2015, The American Journal of Public Heath surveyed some 6,200 schools in California – the epicenter of biometric ID research – and found vaccine exemptions were twice as common among kindergartners enrolled in private institutions.

    It seems that the elite are betting heavily on the development of an ID-tracking vaccine that would bring all races and institutions together under one big happy roof, but clearly they will continue living in their own fenced-off neighborhood in this one world government. Whether or not they will get a ‘special pass’ from receiving the new-age mark is another question.
