Health workers screening patients for coronavirus were “manhandled” by a mob of 40-50 Muslim minority group members in southern India on Wednesday, local authorities alleged. The reported incident occurred in East Bangalore, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state.
The health workers, along with other health officials, were conducting door-to-door coronavirus surveys in Sadiq Nagar, a minority Muslim area of Bangalore. They were sent to the area at the request of government officials, who had identified the zones as coronavirus hotspots following a large Muslim gathering in Delhi in March, from which many people contracted the coronavirus – including seven people who later died. Authorities believe that some attendees of this gathering, organized by an evangelical Muslim group called Tablighi Jamaat, returned to Bangalore’s Muslim neighborhoods.
Upon conducting the coronavirus surveys in Sadiq Nagar, the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers – lead by a woman – were allegedly assaulted by a mob of Muslim men.
“Health workers went for surveillance work in Sadiq Nagar. During that time the mosque authorities made an announcement instigating the residents of Sadiq Nagar to surround those health workers. They were physically manhandled by the mob on the instruction of mosque authorities,” Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Ashwath Narayana told the Deccan Herald.

A bill permitting the use of facial recognition technology with certain restrictions has been signed into law in Washington State.
Governor Jay Inslee signed the new bill on March 31 after it was passed by the Washington State House of Representatives on March 12 by a vote of 27 to 21 in favor. The new law will come into effect next year.
The new legislation will limit the “unconstrained use of facial recognition services by state and local government agencies” because it “poses broad social ramifications that should be considered and addressed.”
Under the new law, state and local government agencies “may use facial recognition services to locate or identify missing persons, and identify deceased persons, including missing or murdered indigenous women, subjects of Amber alerts and silver alerts, and other possible crime victims, for the purposes of keeping the public safe.”

A truck driver fatally stabbed three people and wounded another at a Tennessee travel center Tuesday before he was killed by a sheriff’s deputy, authorities said.

“Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday called on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to provide Tehran with $5 billion worth of support to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The president of the European Union’s ERC scientific research council has resigned after three months in the job with an attack on the EU’s scientific governance and political operations.
Mauro Ferrari said he had lost faith in the system after he failed to set up a special programme to fight coronavirus.
But the research council said later his resignation followed a written, unanimous vote of no confidence.
It said it regretted Prof Ferrari’s comments.
“Since his appointment, Professor Ferrari displayed a lack of engagement with the ERC, failing to participate in many important meetings, spending extensive time in the USA and failing to defend the ERC’s programme and mission when representing the ERC,” it said in a statement.
The EU’s executive insisted it had the most comprehensive measures to combat the virus.
One MEP had earlier been quoted accusing Prof Ferrari of taking a “window-dressing public relations stand”.
Who is Mauro Ferrari?
Mauro Ferrari is an Italian-American scientist known as a pioneer in the field of nanomedicine with decades of work in the US. When he took up the role as head of the European Research Council he stressed his commitment to serving society.
In a statement to the Financial Times and Corriere della Sera in Italy, he spoke of his commitment to the “idealistic dream of a United Europe… crushed by a very different reality”.
As the tragedy of the pandemic became clear Prof Ferrari says he pushed for a special programme directed at combating Covid-19, with the world’s best scientists having the resources to fight it with new drugs, vaccines, diagnostic tools and behavioural approaches based on sciences “to replace the oft-improvised intuitions of political leaders”.
His proposals were rejected unanimously, he said, by the council’s governing body because the ERC funded “bottom-up” research proposed by scientists themselves and did not see the beneficial impact on society as a justification for funding.
Prof Ferrari describes how he then worked directly with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and developed a plan which she contributed to.
However, he complains his direct involvement with Mrs von der Leyen “created an internal political thunderstorm” and once it went to the different parts of the Commission he believes it “disintegrated upon impact”.
There are many questions surrounding the real reasons behind the resignation of Mauro Ferrari.
Yes, his stinging accusations about EU institutions weighed down by bureaucracy and internal politics ring true, but he will have known that before he agreed to become the bloc’s chief scientist.
He will have also known that EU countries have always fought to keep sovereignty over national health services, so it is odd that he singled the lack of public health co-ordination across the EU as another reason for his departure.
In fact, high-level insiders in the European Research agency tell me Mr Ferrari’s resignation was not voluntary. He was asked to leave, they say.
They say he was absent for half of the three months he was supposedly at the helm of the ERC, spending time instead in the US, where he has an affiliate professorship at Washington University as well as private interests in the pharmaceutical industry. He is listed on the board of directors at US biotech company Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals.
Mauro Ferrari announced he was now returning to the US to fight Covid-19 on the front line.
The ERC is eager to point out that many of its top scientists have already done that. It says virologists, epidemiologists and others who were doing basic research for them have now joined Covid research teams in other European Commission programmes.
Professor Ferrari’s personal ambitions clashed with the cumbersome structures of the EU, perhaps. A crying shame on all sides when all hands are needed on deck in Europe, the US and globally to help protect the general public from coronavirus.
The research council detailed several of those points in its statement, saying:
Prof Ferrari had failed to take part in important meetings and spent extensive time in the US he had made several personal initiatives within the Commission, without consulting or tapping into the ERC’s collective knowledge he had been involved in multiple external enterprises, some academic and some commercial, which “appeared on several occasions to take precedence over his commitment to ERC” his workload proved to be incompatible with his mandate.
Speaking to the BBC’s Newshour programme on Wednesday, Prof Ferrari said his departure was caused by a “very significant divergence of opinion” about the strategy needed for the current crisis. He also denied his other work commitments hindered his ability to fulfil the role.
The EU has often struggled to reach a consensus on tackling the Covid-19 outbreak. Finance ministers suspended talks early on Wednesday on how to help southern eurozone countries worst affected by the pandemic. The talks were due to resume on Thursday.
After Prof Ferrari’s resignation, German MEP Christian Ehler told the Science Business website that Prof Ferrari’s proposals contradicted the legal basis of the ERC and were a “window-dressing public relations stand on the coronavirus crisis”.

Mauro Ferrari resigned unexpectedly as president of the European Research Council, triggering a noisy public spat over why and how he left.
Ferrari, an Italian-American expert in nano-medicine, fired off an angry resignation memo – provided first to the Financial Times – castigating the European Commission for “a largely uncoordinated cluster of initiatives.” He said he pushed to have the ERC, which focuses on frontier research, launch a special funding round for COVID-19 research. As a result, he said, “I have lost faith in the system itself” and submitted his resignation on 7 April.
But that version of events was quickly disputed in Brussels. Christian Ehler, a German member of the European Parliament who leads research legislation, issued a late-night statement calling Ferrari’s actions “a window-dressing public relations stand on the coronavirus crisis and it was a contradiction to the legal basis of the ERC.”
Other sources said the agency’s governing body, the 21-member Scientific Council, had decided days earlier to ask for Ferrari’s resignation. Among the issues was a belief that he was spending too much time on non-ERC, private activities.
The Commission issued a statement confirming Ferrari’s immediate resignation and noting that his contract as ERC president only gave him the legal powers of a “special advisor” to the Commission. Legally, it said, the Scientific Council “defines the scientific funding strategy and methodologies of the ERC.” It went on to thank him “for the strong personal investment” he made in the months leading up to his appointment 1 January.
When he took office on 1 January, Ferrari was allowed to continue some outside activities back in the US, where he had built his career in engineering, nanotechnology and medicine. Among these was a paid board position at a US biotech company, Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals. He also continued as an affiliate professor in pharmaceutical science at the University of Washington. But the arrangement was unusual for an agency like the ERC, and had already prompted some outside criticism. As European nations began entering COVID-19 lockdown last month, he was in the US, where his grown children work.
A Commission spokesman late on 7 April confirmed Ferrari’s resignation, but declined to elaborate. Ferrari couldn’t be reached immediately for direct comment, but the Financial Times published his statement excoriating the ERC and the Commission.
In the statement, he said that he proposed that the ERC set up a special COVID-19 programme, because “at a time like this, the very best scientists in the world should be provided with resources and opportunities to fight the pandemic.” He said it was rejected unanimously by the Scientific Council “without even considering what shape or form it may take.” He added that he was later invited by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “for my input” on COVID-19, which created “an internal political thunderstorm” inside the Commission bureaucracy.
The ERC, by law, funds research proposed directly by scientists – based on their own judgment of what’s important; they get the money – €2.2 billion in all for 2020 – if peer review panels organised by the agency agrees with them. Ferrari’s statement says he knew his idea for “top-down” COVID-19 grants ran counter to the agency’s normal “bottom-up” practice, but it was justified by the emergency.
Agency officials declined to comment publicly, but the MEP, Ehler, issued a public defence of the ERC, pushing back at Ferrari.
Besides calling Ferrari’s COVID-19 plan “window-dressing,” Ehler said Ferrari was “never really acquainting with the independent nature of the ERC.” He continued: “We are sorry that things have turned out this way for a brilliant researcher and entrepreneur like Mr. Ferrari. However, this should not serve as argument to accuse the ERC or the EU of not doing enough.”
The ERC focuses on fundamental rather than applied research – and numbers among its existing grantees virologists, epidemiologists and others who have been doing basic research for the agency, and have now joined applied COVID-research teams in the Commission’s other programmes.
They include €48.5 million for emergency Horizon 2020 collaborative projects for vaccines, cures and tools; €45 million to its Innovative Medicines Initiative; €80 million in financial support for German vaccine maker Curevac; and up to €164 million in grants to small business with COVID-19 solutions to develop.
On taking office in January, Ferrari quickly unveiled ambitious plans for the ERC. In an interview with Science|Business in February, he spoke enthusiastically of the need for what he called “super-disciplinary” research, in which scientists break out of their normal disciplines and think across domains. He was also a strong advocate of researchers helping to get their discoveries commercialised and into widespread use – something he did repeatedly in his own career.
Ferrari, now 60 years old, is credited as one of the founders of nanomedicine. In 2016, his research team made headlines with a new cancer treatment that uses nanoparticles loaded with a chemotherapeutic to target metastatic cells directly, thereby minimising collateral damage to healthy tissue and allowing more sustained and aggressive treatment. Ferrari has around 480 publications to his name, with over 20,000 citations. He also holds dozens of patents for inventions including different varieties of nanoparticles for drug delivery.
Originally from northern Italy, he studied mathematics at the University of Padua before moving to University of California, Berkeley, where he studied for a masters and a PhD in mechanical engineering. He went on to become an associate professor at Berkeley and moved into medicine when he became a professor of bioengineering and mechanical engineering at Ohio State University.
Ferrari later moved to the MD Anderson Center and the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. In 2010 he became president and CEO of the Houston Methodist Research Institute.

The ERC’s Scientific Council notes with regret the statement made by Mauro Ferrari concerning his resignation on 7 April. We here present the facts of the situation.
On Friday 27 March, all 19 active members of the ERC’s Scientific Council individually and unanimously requested that Mauro Ferrari resign from his position as ERC’s President.
This request was made for four reasons:
During his three-month term in office, Professor Ferrari displayed a complete lack of appreciation for the raison-d’être of the ERC to support excellent frontier science, designed and implemented by the best researchers in Europe. Although voicing his support for this in public pronouncements, the proposals he made to the Scientific Council did not reflect this position. He did not understand the context of the ERC within the EU’s Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020.
Since his appointment, Professor Ferrari displayed a lack of engagement with the ERC, failing to participate in many important meetings, spending extensive time in the USA and failing to defend the ERC’s programme and mission when representing the ERC.
In contrast, Professor Ferrari made several personal initiatives within the Commission, without consulting or tapping into the collective knowledge of the Scientific Council, and instead using his position to promote his own ideas.
Lastly, Professor Ferrari was involved in multiple external enterprises, some academic and some commercial, which took a lot of his time and effort and appeared on several occasions to take precedence over his commitment to ERC. The workload associated with these activities proved to be incompatible with the mandate of President of the Scientific Council.
Professor Ferrari subsequently resigned on 7 April 2020. Therefore, his resignation in fact followed a written unanimous vote of no confidence. In contrast, Professor Ferrari has stated that the reason for his resignation is that the Scientific Council did not support his call for the ERC to fund a special initiative focused on the COVID-19 virus. To address this point specifically, we did not support a special initiative because that is not our remit and the Commission’s Research and Innovation Directorate General, with which we are connected, was already very active in developing new programmes to support this research through the appropriate channels.
Indeed, many ERC funded researchers have been active for some time in researching the coronavirus family and many other equally dangerous pathogens. Over 50 ongoing or completed ERC projects supported for a total value of about EUR 100 million are contributing to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic by providing insights from several different scientific fields such as: virology, epidemiology, immunology, paths for new diagnostics and treatments, public health, medical devices, artificial intelligence, social behaviour, crisis management.
In addition, as stated on its website in reaction to the COVID-19 crisis, the ERC offers ‘grantees the flexibility to adjust their research project”. This is an efficient measure because several ERC grantees already enquired about the possibility of addressing COVID-19 related research in their ongoing ERC project. All this information is publicly available on the ERC website, which also includes testimonies from funded ERC grantees on how bottom-up frontier research is critical to deliver new – and sometimes unexpected – insights relevant for better understanding and fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as for providing social behaviour and crisis management related solutions.
However, the ERC does not make calls for specific topics, since a guiding principle of ERC is that our researchers are free to pursue the goals they define and to decide on what they wish to work. In our view, this is a crucial way to generate the best science.
The Scientific Council wishes to clarify, in case of any doubt, that they absolutely endorse the view that scientific research will provide the best solutions to tackling pandemics, such as COVID-19.
Therefore, we regret Professor Ferrari’s statement, which at best is economical with the truth. This Scientific Council remains dedicated to pursuing the mission for which the ERC was established: the support of bottom-up ground-breaking research. It is also worth noting that despite the pandemic, the ERC Executive Agency is struggling against the odds to actively process applications for our Consolidator Grants and Starting Grants, which will support researchers throughout Europe to make the discoveries of the future.

A Säpo spokesman suggested that it was indistinguishable from the Islamist threat because it “carried the same propaganda message”.
“It’s hard to differentiate between the two. Because we see a tremendous amount of activity linked to the violent right-wing extremist environment. With a propaganda similar to the what [Daesh*] had going”, Säpo chief of counterterrorism Fredrik Hällström told TV4. According to him, their method is to create a problem and stir polarisation in society.
In its recent yearbook, Säpo noted a development in which “violence-promoting right-wing ideology”, saying it has increased. The threat of Islamist extremism, by contrast, was reportedy waning, the same report suggested.
“The Security Police sees a risk of assaults and serious violent crimes inspired by right-wing extremism. There is also a continuing assault threat from violent Islamist extremism”, Säpo chief Klas Friberg said in a press release, again equating the two threats.
In the yearbook, Säpo also took the initiative to broaden the definition of “right-wing extremism”. In the words of senior analyst Ahn-Za Hagström, its values are much broader than “racism and xenophobia” and allegedly include nationalism, resistance to LGBT activism, and criticism of feminism. Even internet free speech was seen a major problem. According to Säpo, the digitalisation of society has facilitated the spread of what is considered “extremist” propaganda.
A 2017 Säpo count numbered some 2,000 Islamist extremists, indicating a ten-fold increase in just a few years, and between 600 to 700 right-wing and left-wing extremists, national broadcaster SVT reported. A subsequent 2018 count founded on data from Säpo and the police, however, only revealed 785 people linked to Islamist extremism, as opposed to 382 right-wing extremists and 193 left-wing extremists, SVT reported.
At the same time, Sweden remain one of Europe’s leaders in terms of jihadists per capita, having provided about 300 “Daesh travellers”, as they are sometimes referred to in official parlance. About half of them have returned “home”, with almost none facing prosecution for crimes committed in the Middle East. Several, however, were later convicted of crimes committed upon return to Sweden.
Uzbek asylum seeker Rakhmat Akilov, who after pledging allegiance to Daesh hijacked a truck and deliberately ran over a crowd in central Stockholm, killing five and injuring 14, was later convicted of murder and terrorist crimes and sentenced to life in prison. If released, he faces deportation to Uzbekistan and lifetime expulsion from Sweden.

“French counter-terrorism prosecutors have opened a judicial investigation after a knife attack south of Lyon left two people dead on Saturday.
In a statement, prosecutors said charges will be pressed later Wednesday against the assailant, who was arrested by police minutes after the attack as he was kneeling on the sidewalk praying in Arabic.
Initial investigation suggested that the assailant acted alone, prosecutors said.
Magistrates are considering charges of murder or attempted murder with terrorist intent.
Two people were killed and five were injured in Saturday’s attack in the small town of Romans-sur-Isere, which was in lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Residents were carrying out their permitted daily shopping at the time.
Prosecutors didn’t identify the suspect, but described him as a Sudanese born in 1987 who arrived in France in 2016 and obtained refugee status the next year.

“The global chemical weapons watchdog issued a report Wednesday blaming the Syrian air force for a series of chemical attacks using sarin and chlorine in late March 2017 on the central town of Latamneh.
The report marks the first time the Investigation and Identification Team, set up in 2018 by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, has apportioned blame for an attack in Syria and will likely lead to fresh calls for accountability for the regime of President Bashar Assad.
OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias said it is now up to the organization, “the United Nations Secretary-General, and the international community as a whole to take any further action they deem appropriate and necessary.”
The Syrian government has consistently rejected repeated allegations that it launched chemical weapons attacks during its grinding civil war. It did not immediately comment on the report released Wednesday.
The coordinator of the investigative team, Santiago Oñate-Laborde, said in a statement the team concluded that “there are reasonable grounds to believe that the perpetrators of the use of sarin as a chemical weapon in Latamneh on 24 and 30 March 2017, and the use of chlorine as a chemical weapon on 25 March 2017 were individuals belonging to the Syrian Arab Air Force.”
The investigation included interviews with witnesses, analysis of samples taken from the sites of the attacks, review of symptoms reported by those affected and medical staff along with examination of imagery including satellite images.
The detailed report, running to 82 pages including annexes, said that on March 24 a Su-22 military plane from the 50th Brigade of the 22nd Air Division of the Syrian Arab Air Force left Shayrat airbase and dropped an M4000 aerial bomb loaded with sarin nerve agent on southern Latamneh.
It said the bomb landed in agricultural land, killing livestock and birds and injuring some 16 people.
A day later, a Syrian air force helicopter dropped a cylinder that smashed through the roof of the town’s hospital, ruptured and released chlorine. The report said investigators “obtained information that up to three persons died and that at least 32 persons were injured” in the attack. One of the victims was a surgeon who was carrying out an operation at the time of the attack.
On March 27 a Su-22 plane dropped an M4000 aerial bomb containing sarin in southern Latamneh, affecting at least 60 persons, none of whom was killed.
In his statement, Oñate-Laborde said: “Attacks of such a strategic nature would have only taken place on the basis of orders from the higher authorities of the Syrian Arab Republic military command. Even if authority can be delegated, responsibility cannot. … In the end, the IIT was unable to identify any other plausible explanation.”
The OPCW investigative team was established after Russia blocked the extension of a joint UN-OPCW investigation mechanism that was set up in 2015 and accused Syria of using chlorine in at least two attacks in 2014 and 2015 and of unleashing the nerve agent sarin in an aerial attack on Khan Sheikhoun in April 2017 that killed about 100 people.
Human Rights Watch praised the OPCW report.
“Today’s confirmation that the Syrian military ‘at the highest level’ was responsible for sarin and chlorine attacks in 2017 should remove any doubt that the Syrian state deliberately used chemical weapons against its own people,” the group’s UN director Louis Charbonneau said in a statement. “The OPCW’s conclusions should be used to support criminal justice for the individuals responsible.””
Black & Hispanic communities may be at higher risk during COVID-19 outbreak
The odds seem to be stacked against black, Latino and Hispanic communities when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, the Louisiana Department of Health reported that black people make up 70 percent of coronavirus deaths in the state.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the same trend can be seen in her city with more then 70 percent of COVID-19 deaths reported as black Americans. Initial findings out of Michigan also revealed similar impacts.
“Based on our preliminary data, we see that it appears to be impacting minority populations with greater with 33% of cases and 40% percent of deaths being of African Americans,” stated Vice Adm. Jerome Adams.
The surgeon general also said two factors are at play that are causing the disparity.

After initially advising non-medical personnel to skip wearing face masks, the World Health Organization (WHO) reversed itself last Saturday and came out in support of the public wearing the masks. The CDC quickly followed suit, recommending that Americans wear homemade face coverings in public to help stem the spread of coronavirus.
But not all blacks are on board with this idea. Trevon Logan, who teaches economics at Ohio State University, told CNN that he won’t be following the guidance and counsels his fellow blacks to do the same.

Italy’s daily coronavirus death toll falls, but new cases accelerate
ROME (Reuters) – Deaths from the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy rose by 542 on Wednesday, a lower tally than the 604 the day before, but the number of new cases pushed higher to 3,836 compared with a previous 3,039.
The total death toll since the outbreak came to light on Feb. 21 rose to 17,669, the Civil Protection Agency said, the highest in the world.
The number of confirmed cases climbed to 139,422, the third highest global tally behind that of the United States and Spain.

President Donald Trump and Dr. Anthony Fauci’s obvious differences of opinion on the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine have sparked competing conspiracy theories.
Conspiracy theorists who oppose Trump claim he has a financial motive in hyping the drug to fight COVID-19. Fauci’s detractors assert that has pumped the brakes on using the drug as part of a globalist agenda, possibly directed by Bill Gates.
As with most conspiracy theories, the hypotheses are vague and lacking evidence.
The malaria drug hydroxychloroquine has emerged as one of the most contentious topics of the coronavirus pandemic, giving rise to competing conspiracy theories aimed at explaining a tense battle within the White House whether to promote the drug to treat COVID-19 patients.
One theory holds that President Donald Trump is hyping hydroxychloroquine in order to advance his own financial interests, those of his associates, or pharmaceutical companies that make the drug.
Another theory is that Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top scientist on the White House coronavirus task force, is doing the bidding of globalist health organizations such as the World Health Organization or Gates Foundation by downplaying the benefits of hydroxychloroquine.
As with most conspiracy theories, the hypotheses behind each scenario is unclear and equally unfounded.
What is clear is that Trump and Fauci differ on whether the White House’s coronavirus task force should endorse hydroxychloroquine as a potential coronavirus treatment.
Trump began touting the drug March 19 following the release of a small, anecdotal study from France that found coronavirus patients showed some improvements after being administered hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.
Trump praised the drug combo as a possible “game changer. ”
Fauci has not entirely dismissed the drug, but he has been far less enthusiastic that it will work against coronavirus.
“The information that you’re referring to specifically is antecdotal,” he said at a March 20 press briefing, with Trump at his side, when asked about hydroxychloroquine. “It was not done in a controlled clinical trial. So you really can’t make any definitive statement about it.”
The pair have engaged in an awkward song-and-dance at several coronavirus task force press briefings when reporters ask about the drug. Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of using hydroxychloroquine on the logic of “what do you have to lose?”
Fauci has downplayed speculation of a major rift between him and Trump on the issue. “There isn’t, fundamentally, a difference,” he said in a CNN interview March 22. He said Trump approached hydroxychloroquine from a “hope, layperson standpoint” while he looks at it through a scientific lens.
The topic has become a partisan lightening rod in the two weeks since Trump first mentioned it, laying the seeds for the competing conspiracy theories aimed at explaining the divide between the president and Fauci.
Some of the Republican’s harshest critics have in recent days speculated that he or his friends stand to make a windfall if hydroxychloroquine is widely distributed.
Anti-Trump Internet pundits have pointed out that pharmaceutical giant Novartis, which is one of dozens of companies that make hydroxychloroquine, hired former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen in 2017, seemingly to gain access to Trump.
The New York Times published a story Monday floating the possibility of a monetary angle behind Trump’s interest in hydroxychloroquine. The report said Trump has a “small financial interest” in Sanofi, the French drug maker which also manufactures hydroxychloroquine. The story also said a major Republican donor, Ken Fisher, is one of Sanofi’s largest investors.
The story provided no direct evidence that Trump would make any meaning profit off of hydroxychloroquine. Even Trump’s harshest critiques found the report flimsy.
George Conway, the husband of Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway who is openly opposed to Trump, called the report a “huge stretch,” noting that hydroxychloroquine is sold in generic form, limiting how much drug companies stand to make off of it, even in a pandemic.
Novartis, Bayer and other pharmaceutical companies have donated millions of doses of the drug, which has been used since the 1940s to treat malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The drug’s generic status and wide availability is also likely to limit how much money any pharmaceutical companies stand to make from it.
A scenario that is perhaps a better explanation for Trump’s interest in hydroxychloroquine is that it has been discussed repeatedly on Fox News, Trump’s preferred TV news outlet. Fox News host Laura Ingraham reportedly met with Trump in February, along with two physicians she has had on air, to discuss research on hydroxychloroquine.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the celebrity cardiologist, has also reportedly advised the White House on hydroxychloroquine. Trump on Saturday cited a study conducted in China that purportedly found anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine has protected lupus patients from coronavirus. Oz has cited the study, which remains unverified, on Fox News and his own TV show.
The theories regarding Fauci are similarly vague.
The most coherent suggest that Fauci is in the pocket of globalist business leaders and organizations such as Bill Gates and the World Health Organization.
Another theory is that Fauci hopes to extend a national lockdown in order to tank the economy to hurt Trump politically. The peddlers of that hypothesis have pointed to an email that Fauci sent to Hillary Clinton in 2013 praising the then-secretary of state.
Gates is the second largest contributor to the World Health Organization (the United States government is the largest funder), which has been widely criticized for its response to the coronavirus pandemic soon after it emerged out of China.
Some Fauci detractors have pointed to Gates’ funding for several possible coronavirus vaccines as a possible motive for Fauci to oppose a therapy.
While Fauci has stopped far short of endorsing hydroxychloroquine, he has expressed confidence in developing other treatments for COVID-19 patients.
In a March 20 interview, Fauci said that one of the coronavirus task force’s “top priorities” was developing a treatment using antibodies collected from recovered coronavirus patients.
The Gates Foundation has contributed $20 million to conduct clinical trials of several possible coronavirus treatments, including hydroxychloroquine.

An outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed on Monday on a farm near the village of Wi?ckowice near Pozna? in western Poland, less than 150km (93 miles) from the border with Germany.
African swine fever is a highly contagious virus which is fatal to pigs. It is transmitted directly between animals or through infected meat or animal feed and has also been seen as having the potential to transmit to humans. There is an ongoing outbreak in China that has already already wiped out 40% of pigs in the country.

The outbreak is Poland’s second in 2020 and the first in the Pozna? region, an important centre of pig farming.
The source of the infection were ASF-positive piglets that the farm owner, Smithfield Foods’ subsidiary Agri Plus, purchased in mid-March.
The farm in Wi?ckowice specialises in fattening piglets up to 30kg. There are just over 10,000 piglets on the farm that will have to be culled, local authorities said, but the eradication of the outbreak might be slowed by safety and social distancing measures imposed in Poland in order to stop the spread of Covid-19.
