A statement by the U.S. Africa Command said Yusuf Jiis was one of three extremists killed in Thursday’s airstrike near Bush Madina in the Bay region.
The U.S. called Jiis a “foundational member” of al-Shabab, which controls parts of central and southern Somalia and frequently carries out attacks in the capital, Mogadishu.
“While we might like to pause our operations in Somalia because of the coronavirus, the leaders of al-Qaida, al-Shabaab and ISIS have announced that they see this crisis as an opportunity to further their terrorist agenda so we will continue to stand with and support our African partners,” AFRICOM commander Gen. “Police in Bangladesh arrested a fugitive killer of the country’s independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Tuesday, nearly 45 years after the brutal assassination, the country’s home minister said.
Abdul Majed, a former military captain, was arrested in the capital, Dhaka, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said, adding that the arrest was “the biggest gift” for Bangladesh this year.
Majed had publicly announced his involvement in the assassination after the killing and had reportedly been hiding in India for many years. It was not clear when or how he returned to Bangladesh.

In 2010, five others who admitted to taking part in the assassination were hanged to death. One man died of natural causes in Zimbabwe. The other six convicts, including Majed, were at large. At least one of them is in Canada and another in the United States, officials say.

The attack has not been claimed but bore the mark of armed groups linked to al-Qaida or the Islamic State group that are present in the Gao region.

Dairy farmers in one of Canada’s largest milk-producing province are poised to dump millions of litres of milk due to coronavirus.
Dairy Farmers of Ontario has told farmers to get rid of raw milk to keep prices stable and prevent oversupply.
The industry group says demand has crashed as restaurants and other bulk buyers shutter due to Covid-19.
Some 500 farms have been asked to dump 5 million litres a week, according to a trade report.
The policy is a volte-face from last week, when Dairy Farms of Ontario, which oversees nearly a third of Canada’s dairies, had asked farmers to increase production amid concerns about a shortage.
“In its 55-year history, Dairy Farmers of Ontario has only once before had to ask producers to dispose of raw milk,” Cheryl Smith, the association’s CEO, told BBC.
Canadian dairy is produced under what is known as a supply-management system, which strictly controls production quotas and imports to support prices.
At first, the industry co-op was concerned there would not be enough milk to meet demand, as Canadians panic-bought at the grocery store. But hoarding has died down, and the dairy frenzy has waned.
Meanwhile, bulk-buyers like restaurants, hotels and schools have been forced to close due to federal restrictions. That means there’s milk on the shelves not being sold, risking a price plummet.
Dairy Farmers of Ontario is hoping that by spilling fresh milk, the supply will balance out and prices will remain stable. The group has not confirmed how much milk they are asking farmers to dump, but says it will be done on a “select and rotating” basis.
Producers told Ontario Farmer, a trade publication, that about 500 farms across the province have been asked to dump as much as five million litres a week. The province produces about 3 billion litres of milk a year, or about a third of Canada’s total supply.
“We are working very closely with processors and industry groups to respond to the unpredictable market fluctuations that are now part of our current environment,” Ms Smith said in a statement.
Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador, another provincial dairy association, asked farmers to dump 170,000 litres last week. The province produces about 50 million litres a year.
Dairy Farmers of America, the largest dairy cooperative in the US, has also asked farmers to dump milk.
Dairy farmers aren’t the only industry struggling with how coronavirus has affected their supply and demand. Global oil prices have tanked with demand, as factories close down and air travel grinds to a halt.
But unlike dairy groups that have asked members to dump milk to keep prices stable, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has decided to ramp up production. The move, spurred by a price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia, has pushed prices even lower.
The supply war has wrought havoc on another key Canadian industry- oil, based largely in the province of Alberta.

Over 100,000 worshippers congregated at the event, defying government orders to call off the gathering amid coronavirus fears.
Pakistan’s science minister, Fawad Chaudhry, reportedly expressed exasperation that the event had been held as planned. He blamed the “stubbornness of the clergy” for dismissing official orders to halt the large gathering. Organizers claimed to have cut the event short following advice from the authorities; however, at the time of the event, they said it was due to inclement weather.
The meeting took place between March 10-12 in Lahore, Pakistan’s capital. It was organized by Tablighi Jamaat, a global “Islamic missionary movement” with millions of followers, especially in South Asia. The far-reaching Sunni group promotes proselytizing, known as dakwah.
So far, officials have confirmed that at least 145 people were infected with the Chinese coronavirus from the event in March; two people have died. Authorities hope to test or quarantine attendees.
People from China, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Afghanistan also attended, which has resulted in about 1,500 foreigners now being quarantined in Pakistan. Others left the country without being tested.
In March, Gaza’s health ministry confirmed that its first two cases of coronavirus were Palestinians who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat gathering in Lahore.
Similar Tablighi Jamaat events held in Malaysia and India during the coronavirus pandemic have been blamed for spreading the coronavirus to other regions.
At press time on Monday, Pakistan had reported 3,766 infections and 53 deaths from the Chinese coronavirus.”

“Police need to be able to hood violent suspects on the streets who attempt to spit, bite, or cough at them while claiming to have coronavirus, a representative from the Police Federation told MPs.
Spit guards, also known as spit hoods, are kept in police custody suites and are placed over the heads of violent suspects who spit, bite, or threaten to spit at and bite police officers.
Sergeant Simon Kempton, whose organisation speaks for rank-and-file police officers, told the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee in comments reported by Sky News: “We need those on the street as well because I’ve got just as much chance of being spat at on the street as I have in custody.”
Addressing the committee via video link, as the United Kingdom remains on pandemic lockdown, Sgt Kempton continued: “It’s an emotive issue for me because I’ve had other people’s blood in my mouth after they’ve spat at me.
“Now more than ever, while COVID-19 is being weaponised, we need those spit guards in the pockets of every single police officer, not just in custody, but on the street as well.”
Last month, the Director of Public Prosecutions Max Hill QC ruled that coronavirus coughing attacks would result in arrests for common assault with the possibility of up to two years’ imprisonment.
The decision came after a rise in the number of reports of reprobates spitting at medics, police, and other enforcement personnel while claiming to have the deadly respiratory virus. In one instance, a group of teenagers spat in the face of an RSPCA officer, the officer saying they yelled at her, “have corona, bitch”.
Officers who have been spat or coughed at by someone claiming to have coronavirus must quarantine themselves in case they are infected and are a transmission risk to others, meaning that they are taken out of the workforce.
Last month, it was revealed that one-in-five London Metropolitan Police Service officers and staff are self-isolating, either because they had contracted COVID-19 or were suspected of having the Chinese virus.
There has been a rising problem in Europe with coronavirus spitting attacks against police officers. Last week, the Austrian capital of Vienna saw three spitting assaults in one day, with one of the suspects confirmed to have coronavirus.
In March, a woman in the Paris commune of Longjumeau who claimed to have coronavirus was jailed for seven months for spitting at police, calling them “dirty whites”, and saying “I hope you will all die of Covid.” In the same month, a man in Montpellier, near the southern coast of France, who spat at and attempted to bite police while claiming to have the virus was jailed for eight months.
While in Sweden, a pair of YouTubers deleted a video of themselves coughing on people as they asked for directions to the hospital, which they allegedly filmed as a prank.”

“Despite national lockdown, police in several French cities and communes were subjected to violent attacks over the weekend as authorities struggle to maintain the strict measures.
The first incident took place on Saturday in the late afternoon when a fight broke out between two men in the commune of Saint-Paul-lès-Dax. Police were called after one of the men fled to his car following the altercation.
When officers arrived at the attacker’s apartment, he set upon four of them with a knife and a machete before being subdued with a taser. Police also arrested his female partner who had been violent with officers, as well.
The woman was later released. But the knifeman, who is said to be well-known to police, was kept in custody, according to a report by newspaper Sud Ouest.
On Sunday evening in the Paris suburbs of Yvelines, residents of several neighbourhoods in Mantes-la-Jolie, Les Mureaux, and Saint-Germain-en-Laye confronted police, threatening them and spitting on them.
The incident in Mantes-la-Jolie saw around 40 youths block the road and surround police, despite ongoing orders that people should not congregate in public to slow the spread of coronavirus. Officers were forced to deploy smoke grenades to escape the encirclement.
Just hours later in Les Mureaux, approximately 20 youths surrounded officers after they stopped a motorist. Police again used a stun grenade to escape the scene.
In Saint-Germain-en-Laye, police confronted a group of youths who proceeded to enter an apartment. The youths insulted and spat at the officers after leaving the apartment, but police did not retaliate due to the presence of elderly people.
Bordeaux also saw clashes between youths and police in the Aubiers district when officers confronted a group involved in playing football matches and engaging in motorcycle “rodeos”.
According to broadcaster franceinfo, the youths immediately attacked the police with projectiles upon their arrival.
The police union Alternative Police CFDT said the tensions in the area were escalating, claiming that a refrigerator had even been thrown at officers from several floors above.
Three police were injured during the operation, and three of the youths were arrested after officers deployed tear gas to bring the situation to a resolution.
Other areas of France, such as the heavily migrant populated Paris suburbs of Seine-Saint-Denis, have also seen problems for officers trying to enforce lockdown measures designed to stop the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.
“We are not going to give up. But we also know where these people live and how they live. Strict containment, for them, is just impossible,” a police officer in the area said last month.
The 18th Arrondissement of Paris, which also boasts a high migrant-background population, was revealed last week to see around 200 fines every day as residents are caught violating the lockdown.”

“Germany plans to take in up to 50 unaccompanied minors staying at overcrowded refugee camps in Greece, while Luxembourg has agreed to accept 12, government officials said Tuesday.
Interior Minister Horst Seehofer will propose to the Cabinet on Wednesday a plan to bring the children to Germany and recommend that “the transfer should begin in the next week, if possible,” a statement from his ministry said.
A dozen children are expected to be transferred from the Greek camps to Luxembourg in the coming days, the Greek government said, expressing thanks to the small European country.
The relocation is “being achieved despite the difficult circumstances of the (coronavirus) pandemic and has created a positive example to other European partners, ” Giorgos Koumoutsakos, Greece’s alternate minister of migration and asylum minister, said.
More than 42,000 people currently live in the overcrowded camps on the Greek islands, including about 5,500 unaccompanied minors. Around 10% of them are under 14-years-old, according to police agency Europol.
The European Union said on March 13 that a group of member countries had agreed to take at least 1,600 children who reached Greece traveling without their parents. But restrictions EU member nations adopted to slow the spread of the coronavirus complicated efforts to start putting the deal into effect.
Children moved to Germany will spend their first two weeks in quarantine and then sent to various German states, the German Interior Ministry said.
In addition to Germany and Luxembourg, France, Portugal, Ireland, Finland, Croatia, Lithuania, Belgium and Bulgaria also said they were prepared to take in children from the Greek camps, the ministry said.
“Because of internal challenges” in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, “there are understandably delays in some countries at present,” the ministry’s statement said. “But Germany has the clear expectation that these countries will keep to their commitment.””

“Pakistani security forces acting on intelligence raided two militant hideouts in former Taliban strongholds in the country’s northwest near Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing seven militants, the military said.
In a statement, the military said four militants were killed in the first raid in North Waziristan, which in recent years was the location for the headquarters of several local and foreign militant groups. Another three militants were killed in the former tribal region of Mohmand, the statement said.
The military said troops seized a cache of weapons from both militant hideouts.
It wasn’t immediately clear what militant group was raided and the military provided no further details.
The Pakistan Taliban had its headquarters in North Waziristan up until 2017 when the military in a series of operations dismantled the insurgent group’s network and killed, arrested or evicted scores of them.

Acting Navy Secretary Modly resigns
Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly resigned Tuesday after he traveled nearly 8,000 miles to Guam to berate thousands of sailors on Monday and later said he stood “by every word” before apologizing for the remarks within the span of about eight hours.
Modly submitted his resignation a day after audio of his speech on the carrier was published by Task & Purpose. James McPherson, acting Undersecretary of the Army, will reportedly be tapped to replace Modly, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Modly, who came into the job after his predecessor was forced out for going against President Trump during the Eddie Gallagher affair, faced intense pressure to resign over his handling of the situation on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier which quickly went from having three COVID-19 cases to hundreds among a crew of nearly 5,000 sailors.
Modly spoke over the ship’s intercom for roughly 15 minutes on Monday, chastising sailors who enthusiastically cheered for their captain, Capt. Brett Crozier, as he departed the ship. In his remarks, Modly said Crozier was either “too naive or too stupid to be a commanding officer” of their ship since a letter he wrote to Navy leadership subsequently leaked to the press.
“Crew of the Teddy Roosevelt, you are under no obligation to love your leadership, only respect it,” Modly said. “You are under no obligation to like your job, only to do it. You are under no obligation, you are under no obligation to expect anything from your leaders other than they will treat you fairly and put the mission of the ship first.”
“That’s your duty,” Modly continued. “Not to complain. Everyone is scared about this thing. And let me tell ya something, if this ship was in combat and there were hypersonic missiles coming in at it, you’d be pretty fucking scared too. But you do your jobs. And that’s what I expect you to. And that’s what I expect every officer on this ship to do, is to do your jobs.”
Several Democratic lawmakers on Monday called for Modly’s resignation, while President Donald Trump said he might intervene. Under pressure from Defense Secretary Mark Esper, Modly apologized late Monday.
Meanwhile, Modly also wrote a response to an op-ed published in The New York Times by Tweed Roosevelt, great grandson to Theodore Roosevelt, in which he called Capt. Brett Crozier a “hero.” The response by Modly was published and later deleted from The Navy’s Live Blog, though it still appears on the New York Times website.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for Modly’s removal. “Modly’s actions and words demonstrate his failure to prioritize the force protection of our troops,” Pelosi said in a statement, adding that he showed a “serious lack of sound judgment and strong leadership.”
Modly offered to resign his post on Tuesday, Politico reported, citing a senior defense official with knowledge of the matter.

As the coronavirus unleashes economic shockwaves across Europe, the European single currency, the most visible symbol of European unification, is facing collapse.
The eurozone — a monetary union of 19 of the 27 Member States of the European Union that have adopted the euro as their common currency — is being buffeted not only by the prospect of a deep and long-lasting recession. Northern and Southern European countries are also feuding over possible financial support for Italy and Spain, the EU’s third- and fourth-largest economies, which have been especially hard hit by the coronavirus.
On March 13, European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde dismissed calls by Italy for financial assistance to help it cope with the pandemic. After her comments rattled financial markets, Lagarde quickly reversed course and said that the ECB was “fully committed to avoid any fragmentation in a difficult moment for the euro area.” Italian President Sergio Mattarella replied that Italy had a right to expect solidarity from beyond its borders rather than obstacles.
On March 18, the ECB announced that, in an effort to calm sovereign debt markets, it would spend €750 billion ($810 billion) to purchase bonds issued by national governments. Lagarde tweeted: “Extraordinary times require extraordinary action. There are no limits to our commitment to the euro.” Larry Elliott, Economics Editor of the Guardian newspaper, wrote that the ECB’s announcement was evidence that, without a massive support package, the eurozone was in danger of collapse:

Harvard Law Students Want Licensing Without Taking Bar Exam

Harvard Law students are asking school administrators to help them obtain law licenses without having to take the bar exam, citing the CCP virus pandemic.
In an April 2 letter, nearly 200 law students set to graduate this year asked Harvard Law School to publicly support “emergency diploma privilege” which would allow them to practice law without taking the bar exam. They also urged school administrators to send a statement supporting the privilege to the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, which announced last week that the state bar would be postponed to a to-be-determined date in the fall.
The states’ decision came after the National Conference of Bar Examiners, which develops the test, offered a separate exam this fall for jurisdictions that cancelled or delayed their exams scheduled for July amid the ongoing pandemic. The letter alleged that postponing the test would disproportionately affect minority students.
