The social fabric of Italy is stretching badly. No wonder Orban is reaching for more control–he wants to keep order over chaos in case it comes. And that’s within one tribe. What about in the multicultural setting? Good luck with that.
How anyone defines their tribe is their business. I guess it comes down to who you trust. Maybe more homogenous countries will invoke martial law because the people will feel safer with it, while multicultural paradises will invoke it because they have no choice. Will richer neighborhoods get police protection for their doctors and lawyers and Indian chiefs who are needed to maintain order and health? I guess it depends on how directly these neighborhoods are attacked. I sure hope it doesn’t come to this, but every time I think I understand what’s going on I see that I really don’t. Yes the economic problems would have been easier to solve if the virus hadn’t occurred, conversely virus is slowing down and potentially removing the Iranian and Chinese governments. Either or both may survive the virus but I doubt they can survive the virus and a major economic collapse. If the expected second wave of virus is hitting China we will discover what is going to happen in a few months.

Urgent alert for missing father after family of four was found dead

Police issued an alert on Sunday for 33-year-old Onur Kandemir, wanted for questioning after four people were found killed in a home including his two young children. The mother of the children and their grandmother were also found dead in the Etten-Leur home on Saturday evening.
Authorities did not immediately identify Kandemir as a suspect. “We are also concerned about his well-being,” police said. “For this reason, we are also publishing his photo to find him as soon as possible.”
Police wanted anyone with information about Kandemir’s whereabouts, or who can shed light on the family’s life, to quickly contact them.
Residents in the neighborhood were reportedly shocked by the grizzly discovery. It started with a report of a foul odor coming from the house on Dasseburcht in the Noord-Brabant town. “It was not clear to the police officers who first arrived on scene what had happened in the house. For their own safety, they had the fire department come out to take measurements,” police said.
The fire department responded just after 6:10 p.m., and soon after more police were dispatched to the scene.
Forensic investigators combed through the home to collect evidence through the night and into Sunday. Police canvassed the block, speaking with area residents to try and piece together what happened.

“GREECE is on the brink of “devastation” as a result of Turkey’s disobedience of the EU pact, which has seen thousands of refugees make the perilous journey to the Aegean islands. And one “horror” statistic has exposed the real extent the crisis has had on those who have made the deadly trip.
With some 45,000 refugees now reported to be living in destitute conditions fit to home only 6,000, the authorities in Greece must act now to ensure the situation on its islands is resolved as soon as possible. Along with the crammed, inhumane living standards in many of the camps, major concerns have been sparked that should just one refugee contract the deadly coronavirus, cases of the bug could sweep its way through those on the islands, particularly Lesbos. And such is the worry among the authorities, locals and those living in the camps, a harrowing statistic has been released by the International Rescue Committee which outlines how troubling the destructive episode could become.
The IRC said that around 43 percent of people living in the camps had “contemplated suicide,” something Imogen Sudbery, the International Rescue Committee’s Director of Policy and Advocacy, said was “quite horrifying”.
She told Express.co.uk that despite the mental health provisions currently running on the islands, there are refugees who are “already traumatised after taking on the worst kind of journeys”.
Ms Sudbery has been calling on the EU and its member states to urgently help Greece in its quest to rehome those who had made the journey.
She said: “These people have endured real horrors on their routes but you would really hope that once they reached Europe they would be able to feel safe.
“But instead because of the situation on the island, that is what is really putting the pressure on each individual mental health case on the island.
“We do have care workers who are working on the island who are working daily in our clinics with people who are very traumatised and with people who are showing these suicidal thoughts.
“And we aren’t actually able to give them any hope or any kind of prospects for the future because unfortunately there is still this kind of limit to what can be done for them.
“So we feel a bit like we’re providing that sticking plaster but what really needs to happen is that EU countries and the UK step up to address the real underlying issues because those statistics are really quite horrifying for the number of people who have said that they are contemplating suicide.
“But it’s really understandable when you look at the overcrowding situation that they’re living in.”
The issue erupted earlier this year after Turkey refused to continue its pact with the EU, claiming the bloc’s flawed vision at moving refugees on from Greece.
Instead, Turkey opened its borders and since then thousands of people have made the trip with a view to seeking asylum in the EU.
It comes after 200 Catholic aid agencies demanded that Syrian war refugees in the Greek camps be evacuated in a bid to “avert a catastrophe” due to the coronavirus.
Caritas Europe and Jesuit Refugees Service were among the groups urging action, which also sent an impassioned appeal to the authorities in Greece.
They wrote: “More than 42,000 people are trapped in hopelessly overcrowded camps and horrific conditions. There is no hope of containing any outbreak.
“Time is of the essence.
“We urge emergency action to guarantee the health and safety of the asylum-seekers, local population and humanitarian aid workers on the islands.”
The statement, which was addressed to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and heads of the EU, said the bloc was “well within capacity” to halt the declining situation.
The appeal was co-signed by Protestant, Jewish and Muslim aid groups.
It added: “We urge immediate evacuation of the refugee camps and hotspots on the Greek islands to avert a catastrophe.
“We demand that the universal human right to seek and be granted asylum, as guaranteed by the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, be immediately restored and upheld.
“This includes accepting asylum applications and considering them in fair procedures, not punishing people who cross borders.”

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the nation needed to prepare for a ‘long battle’ against the COVID-19 in a press conference held at Abe’s official residence in Tokyo on Saturday, as new cases of the virus are reportedly increasing.
“In Japan, the number of new cases of infection is increasing, especially in urban areas, and the number of people with unknown sources of infection is increasing,” he said. “In Tokyo, on March 25, more than 40 infected cases were recorded.”

Pro-Taiwan Japanese politician Aso Taro blasted the World Health Organization for bowing to China and excluding Taiwan. Speaking to Japanese lawmakers, the deputy prime minister said the WHO should change its name to the “CHO,” or China Health Organization.

“Pope Francis has warned of a possible “viral genocide” if governments prioritize the economy over the people, insisting that the state’s first task is to “defend the population.”
“I am edified by the reaction of so many people — doctors, nurses, nurses, volunteers, religious, priests — who risk their lives to care for and defend healthy people from contagion,” the pope said in a handwritten letter sent Saturday to Buenos Aires judge Roberto Andrés Gallardo and made public in part by the state-run Télam news agency.
In his letter, Francis highlighted that “some governments have taken exemplary measures with well-marked priorities to defend the population.”
“Governments that face the crisis in this way show the priority of their decisions: people first. And this is important because we all know that defending the people is an economic disaster,” the pope wrote.
“It would be sad if the opposite were chosen, which would lead to the death of many people, something like a viral genocide,” Francis added.
The pontiff noted his concern over the “exponential growth” of the pandemic, while also lamenting the side-effects of the crisis, like hunger, violence, and the emergence of usurers.
“Preparing for the aftermath is important,” Francis said. “There are already some consequences that have to be faced: hunger, especially for people without permanent work (those who do odd jobs, etc.), violence, the appearance of usurers, (the true plague of the social future, dehumanized criminals), etc.”
The pope also said that while the measures enacted to curb the spread of the virus were burdensome, most people accept them as necessary evils.
“It is true that these measures ‘annoy’ those who are forced to comply with them,” he wrote, “but it is always for the common good and, in the long run, most people accept them and get along with a positive attitude.”
But nearly three weeks of lockdown in Italy are taking a serious toll on the poor, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, suggesting that the quarantine itself may end up being a greater health issue than the virus itself. More than just an “annoyance,” the lockdown has forced many poor people into a state of desperation.
Recent reports indicate that many in Italy’s south are already running out of food and money and police are now patrolling supermarkets on the island of Sicily following a series of thefts as customers seize food and run out of the stores without paying.
Some 300,000 people are paid under the table in Sicily alone, out of 3,700,000 in all of Italy, and most now find themselves without any income, a situation that the Mafia could exploit as people get desperate, warned Leoluca Orlando, the mayor of Palermo.
“Discomfort and malaise are growing and we are recording worrying reports of protest and anger that is being exploited by criminals who want to destabilize the system,” Mr. Orlando said.
“The more time passes, the more resources are exhausted,” he said. “The little savings people have are running out.”
“In the south, there is a very fragile socio-economic balance, where black market work, mafias, and crime thrive,” noted the former president of the Italian Senate, Pietro Grasso.
“There is a portion of population that leaves the house in the morning with the sole aim of feeding their family, without a reference point. All these families now have no chance of finding a solution to their livelihood,” he said.”

According to a new report, the number of coronavirus cases in Seattle, Washington has decelerated as a result of the state’s containment efforts.
An article published in The New York Times Sunday claimed the Seattle-area, which was the location of the first known COVID-19 case in the U.S., has shown a significant slowdown in the spread of the virus. That’s according to data from the Institute for Disease Modeling, which is a private research group that has been monitoring the outbreak as it progresses.
Its data showed that in early March each infected person in the state was spreading the virus to an average of 2.7 other people. Following recently enacted guidelines and the statewide stay-at-home order, however, that number has dropped to less than 1.4 people.
During a recent press conference, Gov. Jay Inslee also touched on how strict containment strategies enacted during the early days of the outbreak are now beginning to pay off.
“We know that this is still a dire challenge, we know this is a fateful disease, we know that we have not turned the corner and we are not even close to the end of this battle, but we do think there is some evidence that our community mitigation strategies — the things we’ve done already to close schools, close restaurants and theaters, to prohibit gatherings — we think these things have been able to slow the rate of increase,” Gov. The number of coronavirus deaths since March 1 climbed 13% to 2,606 on Sunday, while the number of intensive care cases rose 8.4 percent to 4,632, its lowest daily rise in that period — a rare positive in recent days.
However, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has warned the country’s 67 million people that the toughest weeks in the fight against epidemic were still to come and doctors in the capital said on Monday they were close to saturation point.
“Today in the pulmonology unit we are as full as full can be,” Jerome Pinot, a doctor at the Georges Pompidou hospital in Paris told Reuters.

Yesterday, Howard Portnoy wrote about a snag presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden encountered during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. When asked about his former boss’s role in the current shortage of N95 masks, Biden claimed, “I wasn’t a part of it.” This protestation of innocence would be a little easier to stomach if the former vice president hadn’t cultivated the silly habit of referring on the campaign trail to the previous administration as the “Obama-Biden administration.”
But it turns out that Biden’s denial was not the only rough patch he eexperiencd during the interview. He also ran afoul of a beast called “the English language.” When Cooper asked Biden to name “the most important quality of a President in times of crisis,” he answered in tongues:

NYT story recounts the heartbreak of developing portable ventilators for the national stockpile

A New York Times article on 29 March 2020 outlines some of the saga of an unsuccessful attempt by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to get a new-generation portable ventilator developed and procured, for inclusion in America’s Strategic National Stockpile.
The key words in that sentence are “some of.”
The short version of the story is simple. The need for such a project was outlined in 2007. A $6.7 million contract for research and development (R&D) on the desired ventilator – which was to cost the government less than $3,000 a copy – was awarded in 2010. (The original bid solicitation is here.)
The ventilator was duly developed and approved by the FDA; on schedule, we might add.

Administrators at the University of Wisconsin, Madison condemned a series of “anti-China” chalk messages that appeared this week. One chalk message referred to the “Chinese virus” while another blamed the ongoing pandemic on the Chinese government. The University’s chancellor referred to the chalking as “racist behavior.”
According to a report by Campus Reform, the University of Wisconsin, Madison is fighting back against a series of anonymous “anti-China” chalk messages that appeared on campus this week.
In a statement, University of Wisconsin, Madison Chancellor Rebecca Black argued that China is not responsible for the pandemic. She went on to suggest that the chalk messages were “racist.”
“No one person, country, or ethnicity created this pandemic — disease does not discriminate,” Chancellor Blank stated in the email to all students and faculty. “We want to be clear that racist behaviors or stereotyping of any kind are not tolerated at UW-Madison — no matter if we are online, passing others in public, or quarantined at home.”
Dean of Students Christina Olstad said that the chalk messages should not be tolerated by the community. “We are here for students and here to let them know that [any discriminatory] behavior is not tolerated at UW-Madison,” Olstad said. “We can do better than this.”
The Asian American Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, condemned the chalk writings in a post on social media. “The Asian American Studies Program denounce these anti-China and anti-Chinese acts found on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus on March 24, 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has no nationality or race,” the Facebook post reads. “We stand with the world in compassion and kindness for those affected, as we adhere to the Safer at Home directive.”
Breitbart News reported in 2018 that activist students at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, had argued that serving ice cream on campus made Muslim, Jewish, and vegan students feel unwelcome.

Astrophysicist gets magnets stuck up nose while inventing coronavirus device
Australian Dr Daniel Reardon ended up in hospital after inserting magnets in his nostrils while building a necklace that warns you when you touch your face
An Australian astrophysicist has been admitted to hospital after getting four magnets stuck up his nose in an attempt to invent a device that stops people touching their faces during the coronavirus outbreak.
Dr Daniel Reardon, a research fellow at a Melbourne university, was building a necklace that sounds an alarm on facial contact, when the mishap occurred on Thursday night.
The 27 year-old astrophysicist, who studies pulsars and gravitational waves, said he was trying to liven up the boredom of self-isolation with the four powerful neodymium magnets.
“I have some electronic equipment but really no experience or expertise in building circuits or things,” he told Guardian Australia.
“I had a part that detects magnetic fields. I thought that if I built a circuit that could detect the magnetic field, and we wore magnets on our wrists, then it could set off an alarm if you brought it too close to your face. A bit of boredom in isolation made me think of that.”
However, the academic realised the electronic part he had did the opposite – and would only complete a circuit when there was no magnetic field present.
“I accidentally invented a necklace that buzzes continuously unless you move your hand close to your face,” he said.
“After scrapping that idea, I was still a bit bored, playing with the magnets. It’s the same logic as clipping pegs to your ears – I clipped them to my earlobes and then clipped them to my nostril and things went downhill pretty quickly when I clipped the magnets to my other nostril.”
Reardon said he placed two magnets inside his nostrils, and two on the outside. When he removed the magnets from the outside of his nose, the two inside stuck together. Unfortunately, the researcher then attempted to use his remaining magnets to remove them.
“At this point, my partner who works at a hospital was laughing at me,” he said. “I was trying to pull them out but there is a ridge at the bottom of my nose you can’t get past.
“After struggling for 20 minutes, I decided to Google the problem and found an article about an 11-year-old boy who had the same problem. The solution in that was more magnets. To put on the outside to offset the pull from the ones inside.
“As I was pulling downwards to try and remove the magnets, they clipped on to each other and I lost my grip. And those two magnets ended up in my left nostril while the other one was in my right. At this point I ran out of magnets.”
Before attending the hospital, Reardon attempted to use pliers to pull them out, but they became magnetised by the magnets inside his nose.
“Every time I brought the pliers close to my nose, my entire nose would shift towards the pliers and then the pliers would stick to the magnet,” he said. “It was a little bit painful at this point.
“My partner took me to the hospital that she works in because she wanted all her colleagues to laugh at me. The doctors thought it was quite funny, making comments like ‘This is an injury due to self-isolation and boredom.’”
At the hospital, a team of two doctors applied an anaesthetic spray and manually removed the magnets from Reardon’s nose.
“When they got the three out from the left nostril, the last one fell down my throat,” he said. “That could have been a bit of a problem if I swallowed or breathed it in, but I was thankfully able to lean forward and cough it out … Needless to say I am not going to play with the magnets any more.”
Medical records from the emergency department said that Reardon did not have difficulty breathing, and denied the presence of further magnets up his nose.
The astrophysicist told Guardian Australia he had ruled out further experiments with the magnets and face-touching, and would find other ways to pass the time while at home.
“I’m actually getting a lot of work done,” he said. “Working remotely is not that bad. We are also renovating our house, so I am building shelves, making furniture and doing some tiling.”

“Thousands of residents of the central Chinese province of Hubei gathered in angry protest on Friday,” Wong Siu-san and Lau Siu-fun of Radio Free Asia reported Friday, “amid a physical melee between their police force and that of neighboring Jiangxi province at a checkpoint on a bridge between the two.”
As Athan Vanderklippe of Canada’s Globe and Mail reported, “Violent clashes erupted on a bridge between China’s virus-stricken Hubei province and neighboring Jiangxi province, days after authorities relaxed an epidemic lockdown.” The confrontation came after “authorities in Jiangxi blocked entry to people from Hubei,” and according to the Communist Party’s People’s Daily, “the risk of sporadic cases and local outbreaks still exists.”
The next morning, March 28, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post were dodging a story they should have seen coming.
