Group of Imams disappointed worshippers are still gathering, despite calls for people to stay home
A group of Ontario imams and Islamic scholars are fighting an uphill battle to convince management at a handful of Toronto-area mosques to completely shutter their doors.
They say that while a majority of mosques are closed — some a whole week before Premier Doug Ford declared a province-wide state of emergency on March 17 — a few insist on remaining open.
The imams believe the refusal to close the mosques exposes an allegiance to certain foreign scholars not heeding the calls, and in the process endangering Canadian lives.
“We hate to see mosques shuttered, but our religion teaches us that we have an obligation to save lives and preserve people’s health,” said Zahir Bacchus, imam at Brampton’s Jamiat Al Ansar and a prominent member of the Canadian Council of Imams (CCI).

City says data will be used to encourage social distancing, but civil liberties experts say it could be against the law
The City of Toronto is obtaining cellphone data from wireless carriers to help it identify where people have assembled in groups, part of its attempts to slow the spread of COVID-19, Mayor John Tory said on Monday. But city staff said Tuesday morning the city doesn’t plan to collect such data.
“We had … the cellphone companies give us all the data on the pinging off their network on the weekend so we could see, ‘Where were people still congregating?’” Tory said during an online video-conferencing event Monday evening hosted by TechTO, a local meetup organization. “Because the biggest enemy of fighting this thing is people congregating close together.”
Tory said the data will be used to generate a heat map. He did not name the companies that had provided the city with data.

Footage has emerged of a man being dragged along the ground by a moving car after being snatched by a rival gang in Halifax.
The disturbing footage was captured by horrified residents in the West Yorkshire town on Tuesday.
Neighbours began filming when a red Audi saloon was pelted with missiles in broad light outside a corner shop before a massive brawl ensued.
Gasps can be heard as the victim is grabbed by a passenger in the car through a half open door.
He is left dangling from the vehicle as it reaches speed before his shoes fall off.
As the car continues to motor forward, the man’s fellow gang members retrieve his shoes and return to their own car where they set off in pursuit of the red Audi.
Those filming the shocking scenes can be heard saying: ‘They are going to kill him.’
