This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  3. Japanese flu drug ‘clearly effective’ in treating coronavirus, says China

    Medical authorities in China have said a drug used in Japan to treat new strains of influenza appeared to be effective in coronavirus patients, Japanese media said on Wednesday.

    Zhang Xinmin, an official at China’s science and technology ministry, said favipiravir, developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, had produced encouraging outcomes in clinical trials in Wuhan and Shenzhen involving 340 patients.

    “It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment,” Zhang told reporters on Tuesday.

    Patients who were given the medicine in Shenzhen turned negative for the virus after a median of four days after becoming positive, compared with a median of 11 days for those who were not treated with the drug, public broadcaster NHK said.

    In addition, X-rays confirmed improvements in lung condition in about 91% of the patients who were treated with favipiravir, compared to 62% or those without the drug.

    But a Japanese health ministry source suggested the drug was not as effective in people with more severe symptoms. “We’ve given Avigan to 70 to 80 people, but it doesn’t seem to work that well when the virus has already multiplied,” the source told the Mainichi Shimbun.

    The same limitations had been identified in studies involving coronavirus patients using a combination of the HIV antiretrovirals lopinavir and ritonavir, the source added.

    Oh, and I’d like to sincerely thank all the younger people who are sacrificing so much to keep decrepit old me from dying of the coronavirus… 🙂 But Steve is right that a prolonged shut-down of the economy will likely produce absolutely disastrous effects and must be avoided. The idea of evicting millions of broke jobless people from their homes and sending them out into the streets could cause a lot of deaths and all manner of grief. A few weeks is one thing but months will be an atomic bomb…

    “A WOMAN has been arrested after a seven-year-old girl was stabbed in an “unprovoked and random attack” in a park on Mother’s Day, police have said.

    The suspect, 30, is not known by the child’s family and was detained by a member of the public at the scene – in Queen’s Park in Bolton. Greater Manchester Police were called just after 2.30pm on Sunday. Along with the ambulance service, the police found the young girl had been attacked with a knife.

    The seven-year-old suffered “extremely serious injuries” and sadly died shortly after.

    Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson said the young girl had been enjoying a day out with her family before the unprovoked attack and described it as “a family’s worst nightmare”.

    A statement from Russ Jackson, of Greater Manchester Police, read: “Words cannot describe how awful this attack is.

    “The family were out in the park, enjoying the spring sun when in a totally unprovoked and random attack this little girl sustained horrendous injuries and sadly died a short while later.

    “A 30-year-old woman who was not known to the family was detained by a member of the public and then arrested by the police.

    “She is currently in custody for murder and it is expected she will be interviewed by detectives later.

    “We are working to understand the motive for this completely random and brutal attack.”

    The Assistant Chief Constable added: “We understand that the woman has some history of mental illness and we are working to understand if this played any part in her motive.

    “We have sent specialist family liaison officers to support the family. This is a family’s worst nightmare.

    “The incident is horrendous and I cannot begin to imagine what the family of this little girl are going through.

    “We are determined to quickly understand how this came to happen, leaving a young family so distraught and so devastated in an instant.”

    Queen’s Park, which is one of the largest parks in Bolton, appeared to have been cordoned off earlier today.

    One witness told the Manchester Evening News: “We were sat on the benches near the railings, close to the big car park and the kids were playing when we saw two police officers running across the park as fast as they could.

    ”Then a girl ran over and said a little girl had been stabbed. The police started coming round and asking everyone to leave, and that’s what we did.

    ”It left us really shaken up. We had to reassure the kids as they were really upset.””

    Claiming that there is a new COVID-19 victim every eight minutes in Iran and Italy, Sheikh Al-Mutawa prayed for Allah to continue unleashing the virus against the people behind the Deal of the Century.

    He said: “Look how anyone who schemes against the Al-Aqsa Mosque is being shattered to smithereens…

    This is the greatness of Allah!”

    The sermon was aired on Al-Aqsa TV (Hamas – Gaza).

    Faisal Al-Khozae, a Jordanian expert on international law, said in a March 16, 2020 interview on A-ONE TV (Jordan) that he tends to agree with the conspiracy theories that COVID-19 is a man-made biological weapon.

    Claiming that the U.S. selected China to be the country from which the coronavirus would start spreading, he said that the United States has 12 highly advanced laboratories that have been producing viruses like COVID-19, SARS, AIDS, swine flu, and anthrax for 20 years.

    Al-Khozae also claimed that the U.S. is currently establishing its greatest biological lab in the “State of Manhattan.”

    On March 22, 2020, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a 40-minute-long speech, which aired on Channel 1 (Iran) and posted on Khamenei’s website.

    The Iranian leader said that America is Iran’s most evil enemy and that top American officials are charlatans, greedy, insolent liars, and merciless terrorists.

    He said that America’s offers to help Iran with treatment and medicine are strange because America itself has equipment shortages, and he elaborated that no Iranian would accept these offers anyway because America has been accused of manufacturing and spreading COVID-19.

    Khamenei said that he does not know if these accusations are true, but that if they are, American medicine might be a means to further spread the disease in Iran and the American doctors who would come to Iran might do so in order to gather more information about the behavior of the virus in order to increase America’s hostility towards Iran.

    In addition, he referred to a theory that strains of COVID-19 were produced specifically to target Iran using information gathered about Iranian genetics.

    LONDON (Reuters) – Britain sent in the army to deliver protective equipment to hospitals on Monday and told people to stay at home and heed warnings over social distancing or the government would bring in more extreme measures to stop the coronavirus spread.

    With some doctors saying they felt like “cannon fodder”, the government said the military would help ship millions of items of personal protective equipment (PPE) including masks to healthcare workers who have complained of shortages.

    During a Sunday morning appearance on Fox Business, Wolf spoke about the Trump administration’s actions to curb the spread of COVID-19. While a number of hard hit states have executed lockdown orders, such as California and New Jersey, the White House does not yet think it’s necessary to put the entire U.S. under a lockdown.

    “Not at this time,” the DHS chief said when Maria Bartiromo asked if the president was contemplating a full shutdown of the country.

    Diane Abbott’s son has today admitted to spitting at a police officer and biting his colleague outside the Foreign Office after being refused entry.

    James Abbott-Thompson, 28, was working as a diplomat for the government department after graduating from Cambridge University.

    He went to the building on 29 November to ask to see a member of staff he knew and became angry when he was told they were not there.

Libya has not confirmed any cases of the virus, but public health officials fear the global pandemic could devastate the war-torn country. The conflict has ravaged key infrastructure and created dire shortages of medical supplies.

    Yacoub El Hillo, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Libya, said Sunday that the “timing could not be worse” for the coronavirus to loom over Libya. Echoing calls by the U.S. and other world powers, he urged a “complete cessation of hostilities” so health authorities could ensure unhindered access to aid and boost protective measures.

    Libya has been embroiled in civil war for nine years. The North African country ranks 168th of 195 nations worldwide in preparedness for a health crisis, according to the Global Health Security Index, a project of the John Hopkins Center for Health Security.”

  46. TORONTO — Ontario is ordering all non-essential businesses to shut down in an effort to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

    Premier Doug Ford made the announcement Monday afternoon about a week after declaring a state of emergency in the province.

    The order will come into effect on March 24 at 11:59 p.m. and will remain in place for at least two weeks.

    The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has urged countries not to “close avenues to asylum” as part of measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus. He is worried that some countries could completely block the right to seek asylum.

    “With the world mobilizing to combat the spread of Covid-19, many countries are rightly adopting exceptional measures, limiting air travel and cross-border movements,” Filippo Grandi said in a statement released on March 19 by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). “All states must manage their borders in the context of this unique crisis as they see fit.But these measures should not result in closure of avenues to asylum, or of forcing people to return to situations of danger.”

    “For many people around the world, everyday life has come to a standstill, or is being transformed in ways that we had never envisaged,” Grandi stressed in the statement. “But wars and persecution have not stopped – and today, across the globe, people are continuing to flee their homes in search of safety. I am increasingly worried by measures adopted by some countries that could block altogether the right to seek asylum.”

    ‘Let us not forget those fleeing war and persecution’

    ”If health risks are identified, screening arrangements can be put in place, together with testing, quarantine and other measures,” he noted in the statement. “These will enable authorities to manage the arrival of asylum seekers and refugees in a safe manner, while respecting international refugee protection standards designed to save lives.”

    Grandi stressed: “In these challenging times, let us not forget those who are fleeing war and persecution. They need – we all need – solidarity and compassion now more than ever before.”

    UNHCR’s airlift with vital medical aid lands in Iran

    UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, airlifted today (23 March) some 4.4 tonnes of much-needed medical aid items, including supplies to support the COVID-19 response in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

    The Airbus A330-200 arrived at Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran from Frankfurt at 17.40 (CET) delivering masks, gloves and essential medicines to help address critical shortages in Iran’s health care system.     Gordon Brown, who was Prime Minister of Britain and leader of its far-Left Labour Party from 2007 to 2010, has been accused of making a dirty deal with Saudi interests that resulted in a hands-off order to British police regarding the Muslim rape gangs that have plagued the once-sceptered isle for years.

    The UK news site Politicalite reported Saturday “during Gordon Brown’s short tenure as Prime Minister he borrowed money from the Saudi’s [sic] – but the deal had BIG strings attached.”

    Politicalite quoted an anonymous source that it said was connected to the world of finance, claiming: “In return for the money, the condition they insisted on, was that Muslims in Britain must be free to do anything they like.”

    It sounds unbelievable – or does it, really, after all we have seen “public servants” do in the last few years, up to and including the attempted deep state coup against President Trump? And whether it was because of Brown or for some other reason, there is no doubt that British authorities for years were notably unwilling to do anything about the rape gangs, despite the fact that thousands of British girls had their lives destroyed.

    Warren Buffett wasn’t oblivious to the coronavirus. The University of Nebraska Medical Center, not far from the black gated mansion of the billionaire, was on the front lines of fighting the outbreak. Passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship were being treated 5 minutes from his house.

    What was Warren Buffett thinking when he shoved $45 million more in good money after bad?

    Berkshire Hathaway now owns 11% of Delta Airlines, and between 8% and 10% of United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and American Airlines. When you’re squeezed into a 17-inch airline seat, it’s because a major funder of Democrat political causes is extracting maximum value from his investment.
