Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. This all will pass. If you’ve got substantial savings in a bank, you may want to consider reducing the amount below the insured threshold. You may consider making this reduction by buying some physical precious metals while you still can. You see, if you go to the teller and ask for more than $10k it gets tricky because of currency controls. But if you go to the teller and ask for a bank-certified cheque to buy one million dollars worth of gold or silver they can’t say a thing.

    If you don’t buy into all this PM business, then you may consider opening multiple accounts at different banks holding lesser amounts in each. I don’t know if this will work because this is uncharted territory, but it’s something.

    I just don’t know how THE SYSTEM–even a lollipop-sucking, rainbow-riding, Keynesian-conniving–system that relies on fiat debasement can withstand the white-hot printing press we are about to witness. No one said this would be easy:

    • You have incorrect information on amount, number, and vesting possibilities for fdic-insured banks in US: best to check website. Also, some banks are not fdic-insured. There are ncua-insured banks and state-insured banks, which I know from having had accounts at each. The state-insured bank was not as forthcoming as I would have liked.
      Do you have a reference for the dhs exemption from reporting requirements when a withdrawal is $10K for non-currency? Like, I can buy real estate or metals?

      • Malca, I don’t have any information on amount, number, and vesting possibilities for fdic-insured banks in the U.S. I am going by my Canadian experience with the presumption that thresholds for withdrawing funds before triggering examination are also in the $10k range. Exemptions for reporting requirements are from my own experience in Canada. While it is generally thought the U.S.banks are less regulated than ours are, it is easier to justify any transaction for a stated purpose such as a gold purchase than to simply state the want of a big wad of cash, regardless of where one lives.

        As for the levels of insured banks, Canadian banks have multiple protections through collateral and the CMHC. Conflicting information of savings insured also exist here. Some bank officers have told me $50k, others $100k.

        My point is primarily to alert VTB visitors to the possibility that their funds may be used to “bail-in” their bank if it is deemed insolvent, such as happened in Cyprus. Next was to offer a possible mechanism by which they can most easily lower their deposit(s) without Big Brother bothering them.

    “Allahu Corona” – with these and similar words a 37-year-old Lebanese man marched last Tuesday through the central station of Leipzig and sprayed passengers with disinfectant. The municipality of Leipzig, as the responsible authority can impose a fine of up to 1000 EUR on him. The man was allowed to be released from the Federal Police station after the measures were completed. The disinfectant was seized to avert danger.

    “With over 17,300 cases and 1,135 deaths to date, Iran has been one of the countries hit hardest by COVID-19, with the virus affecting not only the population at large, but a big portion of the political elite as well. Last week, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said there was evidence that the pandemic may have been a “biological attack.”

    A group of 101 Iranian doctors has penned a letter addressed to the leaders of Afghanistan, Georgia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan to take ‘immediate action’ to destroy “all of the US biological laboratories” in their countries amid fears that the coronavirus pandemic may have been spread deliberately as a form of biological warfare, Press TV has reported, citing the letter.

    “We, as a group of Iranian physicians specializing in infectious and pulmonary diseases, asthma and allergy are witnessing that many of our compatriots are infected with the virus, and like all doctors across the world, we are trying day and night to cure and save them,” the letter states.

    “But there has been plenty of evidence in both the world’s leading scientific articles and in the media, citing geneticists and biologists and WikiLeaks documents, that reinforces speculation about the COVID-19 manipulation in biological laboratories and a biological attack by the US through the virus against rival countries,” the letter continues.

    As evidence, the doctors cite the recent questions asked by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian about the virus’s origins, and speculation that “it might be the US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan.” President Trump dismissed those claims Tuesday, calling them “false” and saying that the US military “didn’t give [COVID-19] to anybody.”

    In their letter, Iranian doctors accuse the United States of having a history of using biological weapons, and suggest that given its habit of withdrawing from international agreements and treaties, the US could “defy” international agreements aimed at controlling the development of biological weapons, such as the Geneva Protocol and the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological and Toxin Weapons.

    On Wednesday, Iranian Supreme National Security Council chief Ali Shamkhani tweeted that the United States should “respond to international inquiries about America’s role in creating and spreading the coronavirus” instead of “falsely accusing Iran and China.” According to Shamkhani, “blame games” are the “typical US way of escaping accountability.”

    Earlier, in a press conference on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blasted China for spreading “outlandish rumours” about US responsibility for COVID-19 outbreak, and alleged that “the Wuhan virus is a killer and the Iranian regime is an accomplice.” Pompeo’s remarks follow repeated instances of President Trump calling the new coronavirus “the Chinese Virus.”

    Suspected US Bioweapons Programme
    As a party to the Convention on Bacteriological and Toxin Weapons, the United States is prohibited from the development, production and storage of bioweapons agents. However, the Federation of American Scientists has accused Washington of continuing experimentation with “non-lethal” biological agents. Furthermore, Russia, former officials in Georgia and media have repeatedly expressed suspicions that the Lugar Center for Public Health Research in Tbilisi may contain a secret biological weapons programme run by the US military and private contractors.

    Dilyana Gaytandzhieva, an independent Bulgarian investigative journalist and Middle East correspondent, has reported extensively on an alleged multi-billion-dollar US military programme said to include Pentagon-funded biolaboratories in over two dozen countries, including ten countries in Africa, six in Southeast Asia and nine in countries surrounding Iran and Russia including Iraq, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.

    ‘Immoral’ US Sanctions
    The US slapped sanctions on three individuals and nine entities Tuesday over the trade of Iranian oil, a week after the US extended restrictions on the country’s crude exports for another year. The sanctions, including restrictions preventing the import of medical equipment, have put Iran’s coronavirus response under severe strain, with the country facing a shortage of test kits, protective face masks and other equipment. Iranian officials have slammed Washington for its “adversarial and inhumane” attitude to Iran’s plight.

    Russia, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates and UNICEF have dispatched aid to the country, while China has called on the US to lift its Iran sanctions “immediately.” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has stressed that US sanctions “literally kill innocents,” and added that it is “immoral to observe them.””

    “The once-insatiable oil industry has seen its worst week in almost two decades due to falling demand and rising supply. The two key factors are coronavirus-induced panic and the collapsed alliance between major producers.

    Saudi Arabia has started slashing budget spending following a massive decline in oil prices, the kingdom’s acting finance minister, Mohammed al-Jadaan, said on Wednesday.

    Al-Jadaan announced that the government had approved a reduction of budget expenditures that have “the least social and economic impact”, without naming those items.

    According to the state-run SPA news agency, the cuts were worth around 50 billion riyals ($13.2 billion), or approximately 5 percent of this year’s budget.

    The decision comes following a nightmarish week for oil prices, which fell by a third amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has halted global travel and slowed down manufacturing globally.

    Brent and WTI crude futures, two major benchmarks in oil prices, dropped on Wednesday to below $25 a barrel, Brent’s lowest level since May 2003 and WTI’s worst since November 2002.

    Oil prices have been falling since the beginning of the year but took a sharper downturn after the collapse of an OPEC+ deal to cut the output to support the prices.

    Russia, a major oil supplier and OPEC+ member, did not agree to an additional reduction of oil output on top of what has been agreed before, arguing that deeper cuts would not work.

    Saudi Arabia retaliated with a stunning discount of $6 to $8 per barrel to its key customers in Asia, the US, and Europe and ramped up its output.

    Speaking to Reuters, Russia’s Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin expressed confidence that the market will regulate the situation “fairly quickly”, although there is a much more pessimistic outlook that oil prices could go negative in the worst-case scenario – meaning that companies might pay customers to take oil.”

    “A husband and wife who savagely beat their children will escape punishment because he has diplomatic immunity, a High Court judge has ruled.

    The envoy at a London embassy, a father of six, hit his children with broken chair legs and belts, and dragged his daughter by her hair.

    Their mother drew blood from their nine-year-old with a belt as punishment for breaking the television, and forced her children to stand in agonising positions.

    A 17-year-old said sight in one eye was impaired and she suffers pain from an attack by her father two years ago.

    Mr Justice Mostyn said in a judgement made public yesterday that all six children would be taken from the parents into care by social workers were it not for the protection from British law enjoyed by the father because of his diplomatic status.

    He said social workers and the courts could not intervene to stop the brutality of the parents or help the children. The judge ruled: ‘By virtue of diplomatic immunity these proceedings cannot proceed.’

    The case of the envoy left free to harm his children is unprecedented in British law.

    Mr Justice Mostyn was critical of the failure of Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to act in the case. He said Mr Raab and Education Secretary Gavin Williamson had declined invitations to get involved, even though Foreign Office intervention in relevant court cases is routine.

    ‘This is extremely surprising. I would have been greatly assisted had the Foreign & Commonwealth Office made submissions,’ he said.

    The judge said social workers should write to Mr Raab, and that it was open to the Foreign Secretary either to ask the government of the diplomat’s country to waive immunity, or to expel him so he could be dealt with in his homeland.

    In keeping with the secrecy of the family court, the diplomat and his country cannot be named, and the identity of the council of the social workers who tried to help the children has also been suppressed.

    The children, aged between five and 18, first complained to social workers last November.

    In January a teacher at the primary school attended by the two youngest told social workers that a nine-year-old had revealed: ‘I get hit with a thick belt every day by my mum, but my dad is much worse.’

    The parents ensured their attacks did not force them to take the children to hospital. They were told by their father they would pay for telling tales and were made to send social workers an email saying: ‘We didn’t mean what we said.'”

    “Arsonists set fire to the church of Saint-Apollinaire in eastern France this week, after which the parish priest declared, “This was the last thing we needed, given recent events.”

    The gothic church of Saint-Apollinaire, whose origins date back to the 12th century, is located in the village of Meximieux, in the department of Ain, France.

    In a Facebook post, the parish priest, Father Sylvain, thanked local firefighters, who managed to put out the blaze on Monday afternoon. He also noted that police have arrested the perpetrators of the crime but does not go into detail regarding their number or the motivation behind their action.

    “It is our faith that is violated and it is our community that they wanted to strike,” the priest said.

    Father Sylvain also extended his thanks to the two people who alerted the Meximieux firefighters, as well as the gendarmerie and the town mayor, who visited the site of the attack.

    Despite the damage and pervasive soot, the priest said the collegiate church will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to gather the faithful “before the Blessed Sacrament and the Virgin Mary.”

    “We must redouble our prayers and pray for these individuals. Pray for your enemies,” Father Sylvain concluded.

    As a follow-up post, however, the parish announced that the Saint-Apollinaire church will be closed until further notice at the request of France’s department of historic monuments.

    While Europe has experienced a growing number of acts of vandalism and desecration of Christian sites, the greatest number of such acts have occurred in France, where churches, schools, cemeteries, and monuments “are being vandalized, desecrated, and burned at an average rate of three per day,” according to reports drawing from government statistics.

    French churches and other Christian monuments have come increasingly under attack, with an average of nearly three churches per day targeted for vandalism over the past three years.”

    President Trump on Wednesday signed the second coronavirus relief bill into law that provides paid sick leave, unemployment help and free testing to Americans, the White House announced.

    The Senate passed the legislation in a 90-8 vote earlier Wednesday.

    Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had criticized the legislation negotiated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin as having “real shortcomings”, but urged his members to “gag and vote for it anyway” to show bipartisan cooperation during the global pandemic.

    “This is a time for urgent bipartisan action, and in this case, I do not believe we should let perfection be the enemy of something that will help even a subset of workers,” McConnell said Wednesday morning in announcing he’d vote for the House legislation.

    Two senators were absent – Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., and Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla. — because of self-quarantining after exposure to people who tested positive for coronavirus.

    “Greek anti-terrorism police detained more than 20 people in raids in Athens Thursday and seized heavy weaponry including anti-tank arms, authorities said.

    A police statement said the raids in two central Athens locations followed cooperation with Greece’s secret service. Press reports said the detainees were Kurds living in Greece, and there was no indication the operation was connected with Islamic extremism.

    The statement said that in one of the locations raided police discovered a secret tunnel, but provided no further information.”

    Mortar shells hit civilian houses late Wednesday in the towns of Ain Zara and Bin Ghahsir to the south of the capital, leaving exclusively female casualties, according to Amin al-Hashemi, the Tripoli-based government’s health spokesman.

    Libya is divided between two governments, one in the east and another in the west.

    Last year, the self-styled Libyan Arab Armed Forces, which is allied with the eastern government, launched a military offensive to wrestle the capital from its western rival. The offensive has led to a military stalemate, killed hundreds of civilians and displaced hundreds of thousands. Earlier this year, world leaders convened in Germany to mediate a cease-fire between the country’s warring parties but so far diplomatic efforts have failed to result in a cessation of violence.”

  32. Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart, Ben McAdams are first lawmakers to announce testing positive for coronavirus

    Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., on Wednesday became the first member of Congress to announce that he has tested positive for coronavirus, saying he had been stricken with a fever and headache this weekend.

    Shortly afterward, Rep. Ben McAdams, D-Utah, said he too had tested positive after developing “mild cold-like symptoms” Sunday evening. The 45-year-old told constituents he first learned the test result Wednesday.

    As the news broke, Republican whip Steve Scalise, R-La., issued a statement announcing he would go into quarantine, although he said he did not currently have any symptoms.

    “I have just been informed that my colleague, Mario Diaz-Balart, tested positive for COVID-19. Since I had an extended meeting with him late last week, out of an abundance of caution, I have decided it would be best to self-quarantine based on the guidance of the Attending Physician of the United States Congress,” Scalise said.

    Former Tunisian MP Leila Chettaoui said in a March 10, 2020 interview on Telvza TV (Tunisia) that she condemns Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s entry into Idlib, Syria.

    She said that he did this in order to protect the ISIS members in Idlib, and she criticized Turkey’s role in enabling Tunisians to travel to Syria and join ISIS.

    Chettaoui also said that President Erdogan is currently protecting an “auxiliary army” in Syria that consists of ISIS members and other terrorists, including members of Al-Qaeda, which she said is the greatest threat to Tunisia because its base of operations is in North Africa.

    Khadar Bin Muhammad, the Imam of Masjid Bilal Ibn Rabah in Syracuse, NY, said in a video that was uploaded to a YouTube channel called “The 5:2 Initiative” on March 15, 2020 that when Allah decides to punish the infidels on their land, he may destroy anybody who is on that land.

    He said that this should serve as a reminder to Muslims in the U.S. that they are living in a land of infidels and that Allah may punish them by such means as COVID-19 for “just chilling” while they are surrounded by evil sins like fornication, homosexuality, and alcohol consumption.

    Imam Bin Muhammad also sharply criticized women who are lackadaisical and lazy when it comes to covering their ears, necks, wrists, and ankles, and he stood up to demonstrate that a dress that exposes a woman’s ankles is too short.

    He explained that these are all parts of a woman’s awra – private parts that women cannot show to men – and that showing these body parts is disgusting and impermissible.

    He added: “They are playing games with Allah like Jews.”

  37. MEMRI – Experts on Iranian TV: COVID19 May Be American “Ethnic Weapon” Targeting Genome of Iranians, Chinese

    On March 10, 2020, Iranian filmmaker Nader Talebzadeh hosted a discussion about the possibility that COVID-19 is a biological weapon on this show on Ofogh TV (Iran).

    The discussion was preceded by an animation that explained that the assumption is that COVID-19 is a synthetic virus that was designed as a bioterrorism agent in secret American laboratories as part of America’s economic conflict with China.

    During the show, Iranian documentarian Hamed Ezzatizadeh said that his research has led him to the conclusion that the coronavirus is being used as a weapon, even though it is not clear whether it was produced as such or whether it is a naturally occurring virus.

    He wondered why China and Iran, which he explained are America’s economic and ideological enemies, respectively, are two of the countries hit hardest by the virus, and he questioned why Hong Kong and the many poor countries with undeveloped public health systems that are between Iran and China, such as Tibet, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, have not been as affected by the virus as Iran has been.

    Dr. Ali Karami, a lecturer in medicine, said that as a result of the Iranian Genome Project, which he said was performed at Stanford University in violation of international conventions and with funding from Baha’i sources, the Americans and the Zionists have completely sequenced the genome of Iranians, and he suggested that the Americans have used this information in order to develop “ethnic weapons” that are most effective against certain ethnic groups.

    He said that Israel has been using these kinds of weapons to target Palestinians for a long time, and that this would explain why Iran, China, and South Korea are among the countries most affected by the coronavirus.

    Dr. Karami also claimed that Italy has been hit hard by the virus because Italians are genetically similar to Iranians.

    The other guest, Ezzatizadeh, pointed out that a similar campaign of ethnic bioterrorism had been used to annihilate the Native American population in the United States.

    As of Monday the collective quarantine began with the arrival of the Coronavirus to Venezuela.

    The quarantine includes Caracas and six states of the Socialist led country.

    In the midst of the humanitarian emergency acting President Juan Guaidó asked Venezuelans to stay healthy. According to La Patilla the lack of preventative coronavirus equipment has Caracas hospitals in a horrible state.

  43. Arming China — The Bill Clinton Connection

    Conversations on social media are beginning to stress the urgency of reconsidering our relationship with the People’s Republic of China. It was only recently that most Americans discovered that most of our pharmaceuticals are manufactured in China, and that the Chinese are in a position to withhold them during an emergency of the sort we now face.

    Recent stories have documented Chinese espionage, including the bribery of top American biochemists at places like Harvard, that entailed the constant travel of U.S. experts between China and the United States. Given the short memories of American political leaders, these stories have made it appear as though espionage is of very recent vintage.

    But it is not so. The United States has been arming China for more than 20 years.

    In the Spring of 1997, Stephen Bryen and I wrote a detailed account in Heterodoxy, a magazine edited by David Horowitz and Peter Collier, dealing with American export controls of militarily useful technology. It was entered into the Congressional Record by Tillie Fowler, a Florida representative.

    The theme of the account was how the Clinton Administration was arming China. Knowingly and deliberately.

  44. A Free Speech Victory: Army War College, CAIR, and Raymond Ibrahim

    On February 26, 2020, I spoke at the U.S. Army War College’s Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Penn. The title (and topic) of my talk was lifted from my last book: Sword and Scimitar: Fourteen Centuries of War between Islam and the West.

    Since then, I have received a number of questions concerning this hitherto “controversial” event—how it was, how I was, if there were any disruptions, if the talk even took place at all—which I hereby try to answer in this article.

    First, as many know, the terrorist-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (“CAIR”) tried again—through press releases, petitions, and direct complaints to the Army War College—to get my talk canceled. This time they failed.

  45. Coronavirus and the Western Media

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: While the Western media initially perceived the coronavirus pandemic as exclusively belonging to China, they are now faced with the challenge of covering the crisis as it spreads across the Western world. An analysis of Italian front pages shows that fear is a recurrent feature in news coverage and reveals a delay in journalists’ understanding of the need to adopt difficult measures. Despite the weaknesses of their coverage, their example can perhaps help other Western media not only avoid politicization in a challenging time but also fight the constant stream of fake news spread via social media.

    The role of the media in public health crises has long been an area of interest in the field of communication studies, with media coverage of SARS, influenza, and Ebola epidemics providing grist for research. Studies have examined the effect on media of proximity to the virus epicenter, national contexts, and local cultures, as well as the specific features of the media organizations selected for analysis.

    Generally speaking, fear always receives major coverage. While journalists do report on precautionary measures, dramatization of the crisis, almost always fueled by messages sent by the political elites, tends to be a regular feature in media discourse.

  46. Coronavirus: State Responses and Cultural Dimensions

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The coronavirus crisis has demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of many global systems but has fundamentally challenged individual states, which have responded with contradictory policies grounded in local cultures. In general, education systems and experts have been exposed as inadequate while the information environment has been thoroughly politicized and manipulated. Contrary to a century of expectations, administrative and regulatory states have been shown to be too complex and cumbersome to respond swiftly to a crisis of this magnitude. Decoupling regions and redistributing economic and medical capabilities should be accompanied by a thorough rethinking of the power and responsibilities assigned to states.

Or in other words, she’s talking about how great it will be to get rid of older people who are taking up beds in hospitals

Well here we have a Scottish official talking how the coronavirus will be “quite useful” in taking bed blockers out of the system. Or in other words, she’s talking about how great it will be to get rid of older people who are taking up beds in hospitals.

    June Andrews is a professor in dementia studies, and served for years as the Director of the Centre for Change and Innovation for the Scottish government. She’s been praised in the past, winning awards and being recognized as one of the country’s foremost health experts.

    But now she’s stepped in it by saying “If you’re on the board of a care home company, a pandemic is one of things you think about as a potential damage to your business because of the number of older people it’s going to take out of the system. Curiously, ripping off the sticking plaster, in a hospital that has 92 delayed discharges, a pandemic would be quite useful because your hospital would work because these people would be taken out of the system.”

  49. Coronavirus: Germany Whips Up Anti-Americanism

    The German government has promoted a fake news story asserting that the United States is trying to gain exclusive access to an experimental coronavirus vaccine being developed by a German biotech firm.

    The story — which has sparked anti-American furor in Germany and elsewhere in Europe — has been swiftly debunked by the company, which denied that it had received financial offers from the U.S. government or any related entity.

    The attempt to whip up anti-Americanism appears to be an effort by the German government to blunt public criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel and her cabinet for their lackadaisical response to the coronavirus epidemic.

    On March 15, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, in an article titled, “Donald Trump Poaches German Vaccine Company,” reported that U.S. President Donald J. Trump had offered “a large sum of money” to buy the privately-held Tübingen-based company CureVac, which is working to produce a vaccine against the coronavirus.

    The newspaper reported that according to anonymous persons within “German government circles” (deutschen Regierungskreisen), Trump wanted to “secure the drug exclusively for his country.” The article stated:

  50. How the European Union Turned the Coronavirus into a Pandemic

    The emergence of Europe as the new epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic has as much to do with the European Union’s inept handling of the crisis as it does with the resilience of the virus itself.

    When the world first learned about the existence of coronavirus in China at the start of the year, the EU’s response, like much of the rest of the world’s, was to adopt a wait and see approach as to how it developed.

    The problem for the EU, though, is that it has maintained this lackadaisical approach long after it became clear that the virus was going to develop into a global, rather than a specifically Chinese, issue. More pertinently, the EU’s failure to raise its game, after the rapid spread of the virus resulted in much of Europe coming to a standstill, means that the EU is now trying to play catch-up in terms of asserting a leadership role.

    After weeks of prevarication, the EU finally imposed measures to ban travellers from outside the bloc for 30 days. The measure is expected to apply to 26 EU states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The ban will not apply to citizens from the UK and Ireland.

    “This is good,” commented European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as she announced the new measures earlier on March 18. “We have a unanimous and united approach [where] the external borders are concerned.”
