Reader’s Links for March 11, 2020

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • Kuhn’s book was influential for sure, but the claim about economy is dubious at best.

The economic problems were caused by intentional obfuscation of risk by abuse of statistics. There’s nothing inherently mathematical about that, nor does the average economist fetishize mastery of mathematics. There are different approaches in the field. I believe there’s more interest in behavioral economics than ever before.

In STEM nobody gives a damn about philosophy of science. In the humanities, it differs from field to field. In linguistics, generative syntacticians believe they are involved in a permanent scientific revolution, so they are above pesky little things like the laws of logic, basic scholarship, debating skills and clear, unambiguous and concise writing.

Generative syntacticians have the biggest ego right now. They’re convinced that (their brand of) linguistics is the queen of the humanities. They’re also cynical, and at the same time the ultimate SJWs. They also engage in group think and snobbery. The worst kind of people you’ll ever meet.

  1. Scroll down for useful information on basic understandings if this kind of thing isn’t your thing, or as a refresher if it is.

Opportunists will be feverishly at work, now, using the Wuhan to propel their interests. Perhaps Soros will find another $Billion in some vulnerable currency or commodity, as he did in the British Pound. Maybe Putin will grab or consolidate a strategic interest.

President Trump is vulnerable. He needs a strong economy, or the illusion thereof, for re-election. This is gone. The good news is that the Dems are a mess. This is the ticket. Keep pumping out the truths that keeps them a mess.

      • “…Silver and the miners are getting hit with bear raids. I suspect that the ringleaders on Wall Street, the Banks, are leading the charge here, to protect their own short positions, and to provide a good trading opportunity for themselves.”

This is from another site. It suggests there is a paper suppression of silver to self protect positions, but will inevitably lead to a profit opportunity once the suppression ends and price discovery is permitted once again.

  2. Danish Patrol Boat Refused to Obey Orders, Helped Migrants Reach Greece (sputniknews, Mar 11, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/202003111078533704-danish-patrol-boat-refused-to-obey-orders-helped-migrants-reach-greece/

“Danish Defence Minister Trine Bramsen had no qualms about the Danish mission disobeying an order to push back a boat full of migrants, adding that they “solved the task based on the mandate they were given”.

A Danish boat that monitored the Aegean Sea as part of Operation Poseidon, a border control mission to support Greece, coordinated by Frontex, refused to send back migrants they picked up from the sea, Danish officials told Danish Radio.

Operation leader Jens Møller of the Danish Police told Danish Radio that they had picked up 33 migrants who went to Greece in a rubber boat when they received orders from Poseidon headquarters to send them back outside Greece’s waters.

The Danes refused to obey the order, which they called “controversial” and “life-threatening”. The inflatable boat, according to a crew member, was not in “seaworthy condition”.

“The captain thought it was not justifiable”, Møller told Danish Radio.
The migrants were taken to the Greek island of Kos. Several of the crew members said that the rules of good seamanship dictate the obligation to help people at sea.

According to Navy Captain Jan Niegsch, it is risky to stop a rubber boat by force. By his own admission, such a situation can end up as a sea rescue.

The Danish sailors said that they had seen episodes when Greek patrol boats sail close to the overcrowded inflatable boats to turn them around in so-called “pushbacks” or “turnbacks”, which they see as risky behaviour. The Danish crews have admittedly begun to document the “wrongdoings” of the Hellenic Coast Guard.

“If we witness something that we believe is contrary to the rules, then we document it and report it back to our system. Initially back to Frontex,” Jens Møller said.

Despite the increased pressure on the Frontex countries, Danish Defence Minister Trine Bramsen said she was satisfied that the crew did not obey the order.

“They solved the task based on the mandate they were given,” Bramsen noted.

Denmark’s Frontex contribution currently consists of two coastal patrol boats operating from the Greek island of Kos. The boats are manned by 17 people the National Police and the Armed Forces. Additionally, the National Police and the Ministry of Defence have seven men stationed on the islands of Lesbos and Samos.

Since June 2019, Denmark’s two patrol boats have participated in 86 incidents and “handled” 1,817 refugees and migrants in primitive dinghies and inflatable boats, Danish Radio reported.

Following Turkey’s decision to open its borders to the European Union, border nations Greece and Bulgaria have been struggling to keep up with the migrant influx. Ankara has since accused Greece of “hitting” and “bullying” refugees during attempted sea crossing. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said called on Greece to “open the gates” because the refugees would just pass through before moving on.

While the practice of pushbacks is considered illegal in the EU and has repeatedly drawn criticism from human rights bodies such as Amnesty International and Oxfam, they have been an off-and-on policy of the Australian government since the early 2000s, which claimed them to have reduced the number of IMAs, or irregular maritime arrivals, by 80 percent.”

    • If they feel so strongly they should take them to Denmark. It’s like me rescuing a homeless person and taking them to my neighbour’s house, when he’s already got 10 homeless people that he’s taking care of and his children are being neglected.

  3. In Pakistan, criticism grows dangerous as dissent stifled (abcnews, Mar 11, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/pakistan-criticism-grows-dangerous-dissent-stifled-69526733

“Being a dissident — or even raising a critical voice — in Pakistan is growing more dangerous, regardless of whether the target is political parties, the judiciary or the powerful military and security agencies.

Intimidation of dissidents has increased on multiple fronts, rights workers and journalists say. A number of rights activists have been arrested and charged with sedition. Protesters have been jailed, including a member of parliament. Newspapers and journalists have faced violence, harassment and warnings from security officials not to cover anything that might show the military in a harsh light.

Rights groups say the civilian government of Prime Minister Imran Khan, elected in 2018, has failed to protect freedom of speech, imposing legislation to restrict online media, even dictating who can appear on television talk shows, while at the same time ceding authority for curbing freedom of speech to the powerful military.

“In recent years, the space for dissent in Pakistan has shrunk to the point of suffocation,” warned Omar Warriach, Amnesty International’s Deputy South Asia director.

“The Pakistani military has demonstrated that it can still call the shots without directly being in power. … Taking part in a peaceful protest can now lead to arrest and charges of sedition. Many activists have been forced into exile, fearing for their safety. What was once a lively media landscape has narrowed to exclude critical voices,” he said.

Pakistan’s government has denied allegations it’s stifling free speech. It said it was simply cutting spending when it recently pulled all its advertising from two prominent media houses, Dawn and Jang, that frequently criticize the military’s involvement in civilian affairs. Khan’s government has also criticized the previous administration for using public money on advertising to promote itself.

Government advertising is one of the leading sources of revenue for newspapers and media houses in Pakistan and is often used to squeeze critical media…”

    • A lot more then I like, it looks like the massive economic crash we have been expecting is starting. At least the US economy is still strong and we have a President who knows that massive government spending isn’t the answer. Now if we can just convience the voters that we need to keep him in office.

  4. Iran: Coronavirus Kills Former Interrogator of U.S. Embassy Hostages

UC Berkeley-educated Hossein Sheikholeslam was also a top architect of the terrorist group Hezbollah.

    https://youtu.be/08Ja3uoy6rQ
A top terrorist-turned-regime official, who in 1979 stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 62 American hostages, has died of coronavirus, Iran’s state media confirmed.

Hossein Sheikholeslam, a student at the University of California at Berkeley before the Islamic Revolution of 1979, interrogated U.S. hostages during the 444-day ordeal, media reports said.

Following the release of the U.S. hostages in 1981, Sheikholeslam was sent by the regime to Lebanon, where he played a crucial role in the creation of Hezbollah, a leading Islamic terrorist organization in the Middle East. His terrorist past qualified him to run the Iranian regime’s Middle East policies, earning him the rank of Deputy Foreign Minister in the early 1980s. He also served as Tehran’s ambassador to Syria, the regime’s top ally in the Muslim world. In recent years, the 68-year-old terrorist-turned-diplomat acted as an adviser to the present Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.

Sheikholeslam is not the only terrorist linked to the 1979 U.S. embassy hostage-taking to catch the virus. The country’s Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar, who was the spokeswoman for the hostage-takers, has also contracted the disease.

The Czech Republic-based Radio Farada reported Sheikholeslam death and his links to the Hezbollah terrorist organization:

The Islamic Republic’s former deputy Foreign Minister and one of the leaders of young revolutionaries who invaded the U.S. Embassy in 1979 in Tehran and took 52 American diplomats hostage, Hossein Sheikholeslam died of Covid-19.

Sheikholeslam was also a member of the Iranian quintet that founded the Lebanese Hezbollah in the 1980s.

The quintet helped the Lebanese Hezbollah to entrench itself and grow to the extent that it is currently the key Iranian proxy force in the Middle East. While the United States and several other countries have listed Hezbollah as a highly dangerous terrorist group, the Islamic Republic counts it as one of the pivots of the so-called “Islamic Resistance Front.”

The godfathers of the Lebanese Hezbollah were three young commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Hossein Dehqan, Ahmad Vahidi, and Fereydoun Vardinejad, as well as cleric, Ali Akbar Mohtashamipour who was very close to the founder of the Islamic Republic, and the Foreign minister’s deputy, Hossein Sheikholeslam. (…)

The Lebanese Hezbollah was founded in the early 1980s, when Hossein Sheikholeslam was the Islamic Republic’s number two diplomat, as the Deputy Foreign Minister for Middle East Affairs. Hezbollah’s swift creation and its entrenchment as a major actor on the Middle East stage, in the 1990s, coincided with Sheikholeslam’s long-term tenure as the Deputy Foreign Minister (1980-1996.) No other Islamic Republic official has ever served at such a crucial position for such a long time.

Sheikholeslam apparently remained an unrepentant terrorist till the end. In a February 2019 TV interview, he called U.S. President Donald Trump a “tyrannical king.” Explaining the Iranian military objectives, he vowed that “Palestine and Jerusalem will surely be liberated soon,” a clip posted by DC-based media research institute MEMRI showed.

He is among several Iranian regime officials who have succumbed to the infection. A senior commander associated with the terrorist organization Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and a top aide to the Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among the victims of the disease.

The death of the top regime operatives exposes the callous, if not dubious, role played by the regime in the outbreak of the virus in Iran. The IRGC, regime’s military wing, was caught operating flights into China as late as February 25, media reports disclosed. The IRGC-run Mahan Air, which in the past has been linked to transporting terrorists and weaponry, was operating flights to several Chinese cities despite repeated denials by Tehran.

These acts have only exasperated the spread of the coronavirus. After China, Iran has been the worst hit by the disease. With 5.5 percent, Iran has the highest death rate in the world, compared to 2 percent in China. Out of about 7,000 reported cases of coronavirus, more than 9oo people have died across Iran. The virus has reached thirty out of 31 provinces of the country.

    Canada is no liberal heaven

Amid the coronavirus epidemic, American liberals once again look north to Canada with envy. The management of the crisis in the U.S., has been given to Mike Pence, whom they view as anti-science Christian and responsible for a slow response to HIV as governor of Indiana. At the same time, Canadian doctors are leading the worldwide effort to find a cure to the coronavirus.

And with Obamacare’s existence once again put in jeopardy by lawsuit, left-wing Democratic candidates like Bernie Sanders will once again praise Canada’s healthcare system. The old myth of Canada being the heaven that Martin Luther King described still resonates in leftist American circles.

But the idea of Canada being the anti-American left-wing country par excellence wasn’t true in King’s time, and it still isn’t true today. In fact, despite the actions took regarding the virus, Trudeau’s Canada and Trump’s America aren’t very different.

Canada, for instance, is often portrayed as a country with a generous welfare state and strong environmental policies. But the reality is that over the last 35 years, Liberal and Conservative federal governments have alike embraced the neoliberal ideas of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, thus privatizing many state-owned companies and practicing major cuts in the social net.

Non-interventionism has also led Canada to be quite tolerant with pollution, despite its ecological reputation. Worse, the Canadian state seems less interested by helping its citizens and more in helping business — especially oil companies in western Canada, one of the most polluted regions of the planet.

Canada’s oil industry seems to have a monopolistic kind of influence on political parties. Trudeau, who likes to present himself as a great defender of environment, has approved a $4.5 billion pipeline project. Even the NDP, the radical “socialist” party, has promised to build a polluting refinery in Alberta with public funds.

With the disengagement of the federal government from the social services field, provinces could have stepped in with a more interventionist approach, since many services (healthcare, education) are mostly provincial responsibilities. However, many provinces have elected, over the last decades, politicians associated with neoliberalism, like Mike Harris, Gordon Campbell, Ralph Klein, Bernard Lord, Jean Charest and so forth, as premiers, pursuing corporatism, cuts and environmental laissez-faire.

Canada also has its own religious Right, with strong opposition to same-sex marriage and pro-life convictions. In fact, the former leader of the Conservative Party, Andrew Scheer, came under scrutiny for speeches against same-sex marriage and abortion, even though the latter has been legal for the last fifty years. And Scheer increased his party’s number of seats in Parliament, meaning that conservative positions are quite successful in many regions of Canada and the future of liberal laws is anything but assured.

In short, the same conditions that led to Trump’s election exist in Canada. Even the Trudeau government practices Trumpian kind of policies regarding immigration. The Canadian Ministry of Immigration has illegally detained migrants, including children, which has sparked an Amnesty International campaign against the Ministry.

Prime Minister Trudeau has also an historic of bypassing First Nations’ basic human rights. He has come under fire for botching a government investigation into murdered and vanished Native women, by denying mercury poisoning at Grassy Narrows Community treatment center, and by being patronizing toward an Indigenous militant who protested at one of Trudeau’s fundraiser cocktail parties with millionaire contributors.

This is without mentioning RCMP’s memo recommending to shoot Native protestors on TransMoutain pipeline site.

These abuses are just the latest in a long list of Canadian failures to honor the True North’s international reputation for tolerance, interventionism and environmentalism.

  12. Erdogan: 150K Refugees Have Entered Greece, Turkey Won’t Shut Border Until EU ‘Fulfils Promises’ (sputniknews, Mar 11, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/202003111078537584-erdogan-150k-refugees-have-entered-greece-turkey-wont-shut-border-until-eu-fulfills-promises/

“Ankara opened its borders with Europe to would-be migrants late last month amid an escalation of fighting between Turkish and Syrian troops in Syria’s Idlib province. Since then, Turkish authorities have threatened to send “millions” of refugees to Europe, and suggested that the 2016 migrant agreement needs to be renegotiated.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan estimates that about 150,000 refugees have already made it into Greece, and is calling on Athens to ‘open the gates’ to allow these people to head to wealthier European countries.

“We fed and gave drink to refugees for the last nine years. Now they want to go to Europe. I have long said: if you don’t share the burden with us, we will open the gates. They thought I was joking. But I opened the gates. Now our guests are leaving; we are not required to hold them. About 150,000 people have gone to Greece. [Greek authorities] are now trying to send them back to us using force,” Erdogan said, speaking to members of the ruling Justice and Development Party on Wednesday.

The Turkish president advised Athens to “open their gates” and to “let [migrants] travel through your territory to richer countries. But no one says anything to Greece, which is committing a crime against humanity by attacking refugees. It’s barbaric to shoot people who want to save their lives and to build a future for their children,” he said.

According to Erdogan, “there is no difference between what the Nazis did and those images from the Greek border”. From the context of the statement, it seemed that the Turkish president was comparing the Greeks to Nazis, rather than referencing the invasion and subsequent occupation of Greece by Nazi Germany in April, 1941.

Erdogan also accused the EU of failing to fulfil its obligations vis-à-vis Turkey under the March 2016 migrant deal, and vowed that Turkey would not close its borders with the EU to refugees until the bloc makes good on its commitments. “We will continue the current measures on our borders until all of our expectations are concretely met,” he said. “Europe has not kept its word – neither regarding financial support for refugees, nor on the promise to cancel visas” for Turkish nationals, he added.

Brussels has previously said that 2.4 billion euros in assistance was distributed to Turkey by late 2019 under the 2016 deal.

Turkish and EU officials are expected to come up with a “road map” on the migrant issue ahead of the EU summit to be held in late March. On Tuesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that in addition to the visa issue, Turkey expects the EU to update the terms of Turkey’s customs union with the bloc. Earlier, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned Ankara against using the migrant crisis issue as a “bargaining chip” in talks with Europe, and called on Ankara to stick to its part of the 2016 deal.

Under the 2016 deal, the EU is obligated to provide Turkey with over $3 billion to assist Syrian migrants who fled to Turkey during the foreign-backed civil conflict in Syria. Both sides also agreed to “re-energise” talks on Ankara’s possible accession into the bloc. In return, Turkey promised to stop the flow of refugees and would-be economic migrants.”

The Greek government is suspected of detaining migrants in secret at an extrajudicial location before expelling them to Turkey without due process, as part of several hard-line measures to seal its border, contravening international law.

According to a report from the New York Times, several migrants have reported having been captured, stripped of their belongings, beaten and expelled from Greece without being given a chance to claim asylum or speak to a lawyer, in an illegal process known in international law as refoulement.

Meanwhile, Turkish officials said that at least three migrants had been shot and killed while trying to enter Greece in the past two weeks.

A serious incident took place in the early morning hours of Wednesday, when a Turkish Coast Guard boat attacked a vessel of the Greek Coast Guard off the island of Kos, in the eastern Aegean Sea. “Intentionally with the purpose to ram it,” says Greece and summons the Turkish ambassador to Athens.

The incident was initially reported by the correspondent of German Bild newspaper in Greece who also posted an exclusively obtained video.

A man on the footage is heard shouting “it hit us in the back, there is damage in the back, it broke the rails [on the gunwale]!”

According to state broadcaster ERT TV, the TCG vessel started to chase the GCG boat on high speed and despite the speed increase by the GCG the crash was inevitable.

The Greek Coast Guard released a statement and a picture from the damaged vessel and posted also the video later on its youtube channel.

A statement was also issued by the Greek Shipping Ministry, the incident took place at 5:45 a.m. on March 11, 2020, in Greek territorial waters off the island of Kos.

“The Turkish vessel intentionally crashed on the Greek vessel with the obvious purpose to ram it,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry stressed that the Greek vessel was on patrol within the Greek territorial waters.

“Violent incidents, mostly directed at pro-migration NGOs, have escalated on the Greek island of Lesbos in recent days as Turkey refuses to close the gates to Europe.

On Saturday, local residents of Lesbos set fire to a migrant reception centre managed by the Swiss NGO One Happy Family.

The NGO claimed that while there had been serious damage to the reception facility, they did not report any serious injuries or casualties to their staff or to any migrants, according to a report from Franceinfo.

The attack comes just a day after two residents of Lesbos were handed down three-month suspended prison sentences for threats and violence toward pro-migration NGO activists and journalists following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan opening the gates to Europe.

Konstantinos Alvanopoulos, one of the men convicted by the court, defended his actions saying in comments reported by Le Figaro: ” I will continue to defend my homeland as a Greek. Most of the NGOs here operate like spies. These gangsters must leave the island.”

“We did not intend to threaten the life of anyone,” he added. The lawyer for the two men said both parties had reached an amicable resolution to the issue which involved a public apology by the two men.

Efi Latsoudim, whose NGO Lesbos Solidarity runs the Pikpa migrant camp, claimed that two cars belonging to her group had been vandalised over the weekend by angry locals and other groups of residents had threatened and intimidated aid groups and others.

The attacks have led some NGOs to abandon their work on the island entirely, including the group Refocus, which is led by Douglas Herman.

Last week, Herman accused “fascist gangs” of being behind the attacks and had ordered his volunteers and staff to leave the island over safety concerns.

Violence between different groups of migrants was also reported in recent days, including an incident between a 21-year-old and a 19-year-old migrant in which the elder migrant stabbed the teen with a sharp object, resulting in him being hospitalised.”

  15. Bosnia police move hundreds of migrants to a refugee camp (abcnews, Mar 11, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/bosnia-police-move-hundreds-migrants-refugee-camp-69529974

“Bosnian police on Wednesday moved hundreds of migrants, who have been sleeping rough in a central town, to a refugee center near Sarajevo.

Police rounded up the migrants at the bus and railway stations in the town of Tuzla and transferred them to the camp in Blazuj.

No incidents were reported. Migrants carried plastic bags with their belongings as they walked calmly toward the buses lined up nearby. Authorities in Tuzla later removed dozens of small tents, blankets and other things left behind by the migrants.

Thousands of people fleeing war and poverty have been stuck in Bosnia and elsewhere in the Balkans while looking for ways to move toward Western Europe.

Impoverished Bosnia has been overwhelmed by the influx and officials have expressed concerns over a potential new wave following Turkey’s decision to open its borders for migrants wishing to go West.

Migrants arrive to Bosnia from neighboring Serbia and Montenegro. Many flock to Tuzla before moving toward a northwestern pocket bordering European Union member state Croatia.”

  18. Democrats: A Disaster for African Americans

How the Left exploits the victimhood narrative and devastates a community.

I have often wondered why it has been so difficult for Congress to agree on sensible immigration laws, and also why existing immigration laws have not been enforced. The other mystery to me is why we let immigrants into our country that need to be on welfare when there are many immigrants that are highly educated who want to be here, but are denied. With so many people that want to come to America to live, why wouldn’t we pick the ones who would benefit our country the most?

Democrats are the answer to this mystery. Poor illegal immigrants from Africa, Mexico and Central America eventually vote for Democrats. It’s that simple. It’s not good for our country to let poor, sometimes uneducated persons who need welfare and medical assistance into our country. But it is good for Democrats. In simplest terms, Democrats sacrifice the good of the country in order to import future Democratic voters. An example of that is California, a state that used to be Republican when Ronald Reagan was governor, but now because of legal and illegal immigration, is solidly Democratic.

  19. Russia vs. Turkey in Syria?

A confrontation in Idlib becomes a real possibility.
    March 11, 2020
    Joseph Puder

Israel’s daily Haaretz reported on March 3, 2020, that “Escalating military action by Russia and Turkey in Idlib risks a direct confrontation between the two major foreign powers in Syria’s war, days ahead of a summit of their leaders to hammer out a deal to halt the fighting.” The risk of a Russian-Turkish confrontation has become an acute possibility, and if such hostilities were to commence, Turkey, as a NATO member, could invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, which calls for mutual defense. Article 5 stipulates collective defense among NATO members. It means that if one member of NATO is attacked, it is considered an attack on all members.

Syrian-Turkish hostilities have already begun. Syrian and Russian forces carried out airstrikes last Thursday, which killed 33 Turkish soldiers and wounded many more. Turkey reacted by vowing to escalate its military action against the Assad regime troops in northwestern Syria’s Idlib province.

Syria’s dictator and butcher, Bashar Assad, and his Russian and Iranian protectors, have had a great deal of success in recapturing large swaths of territory in Syria. That success is due primarily to the aerial bombing campaigns that featured Russian jetfighters and bombers arrayed against rebels and Sunni-Muslim civilians unable to protect themselves from aerial attacks.

  20. Bloomberg adviser warns of ‘scorched earth’ retaliation against Trump children if GOP attacks Hunter Biden

by Anthony Leonardi| Washington Examiner, March 09, 2020:
An adviser to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s campaign threatened a “scorched earth” response against President Trump’s children if the GOP refuses to back off from Hunter Biden.

During a weekend interview on MSNBC, Timothy O’Brien suggested that Democrats would engage in a media campaign against the Trump children “unlike anything they’ve experienced thus far” if Republicans continue to investigate and attack the son of Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden.

He’s a regular weekly columnist for The Washington Times, Townhall.com, OneNewsNow.com and others. Robert has held senior positions at the American Civil Rights Union, the Family Research Council, the Culture and Family Institute at Concerned Women for America, the Heritage Foundation, Coral Ridge Ministries and the Media Research Center. He has co-authored three books and written 10 others including, ‘Liberty on the Brink: How the Left Plans to Steal Your Vote’ and ‘The Coming Communist Wave: What Happens If the Left Captures All Three Branches of Government.’
    From Crosswalk:
Robert wrote a column last week called ‘Ripping the Mask Off Democratic Socialism’ where he communicated that the ‘mask’ portrays a quest for equality, fairness and inclusion. However what they really want is to undermine everything that makes us free and make everyone dependent upon the state. This is why he doesn’t make a big distinction between socialism and communism. What about the Scandinavian nations? Robert says they don’t tell you how the Swedes learned that socialism was destroying their country and economy until they initiated some free-market reforms. He feels that supporters of democratic socialism don’t realize the ultimate goal because of the identity groups that have formed within the rubric of this ideology. This would include the LGBTQ community, climate change supporters and anyone else who feels government is the answer to getting people to behave the way they want so that all of us can be “free and equal.” These are folks who he believes are ‘glaringly ignorant’ of the track record of socialism, especially during the 20th century where it led to poverty, misery and mass murder. Jim played audio where Senator Bernie Sanders describes in detail, democratic socialism. In response, Robert noted that, ‘Well, Satan couldn’t have said it better himself because Satan knows that the best lies contain a bit of truth to them.’ What was it that Senator Sanders said that elicited this kind of response? That and so much more can be heard when you review this vital Crosstalk broadcast. Jim Schneider

  24. After divisive public hearing, Paterson passes law allowing Islamic call to prayer

After a lengthy and divisive public hearing, the City Council passed an ordinance allowing the broadcast of the adhan or the Islamic call to prayer.

Council members voted 5-4 to adopt the ordinance following a more than two-hour long public hearing.

Nearly 30 people spoke at the public hearing both in favor and against the measure. Before the public hearing, councilman Shahin Khalique, who sponsored the ordinance, sent out text messages and robocalls to encourage supporters of the measure to attend the meeting.

“The Christians use the bell to call people to worship. The Jews use the shofar to call people to worship. And the Muslims use the adhan to call people to worship,” said imam A. Quddoos Farra’d of Masjid Salahuddin on Broadway.

Masjid Salahuddin has been broadcasting the call to prayer for the past half-decade without complaints from neighbors, said Farra’d, who served in the Vietnam War. “I fought for the freedom of religion.”

Farra’d said the U.S. Constitution protects his right to practice his religion.

Farra’d was among a dozen people who spoke in favor of the measure. Others, more than a dozen people, spoke out against the measure.

“I pray to God you vote against this ordinance,” said resident Stephen Bauer. He has sent emails to council members to oppose the measure.

Bauer said the ordinance is an “imposition” on the non-Muslim residents of Paterson. He faced interruptions from council president Maritza Davila and law director Farrah Irving after he attempted to tie Islam to terrorism.

Some local church leaders also spoke out against the ordinance. Last week, some pastors held a meeting to discuss the ordinance at a church. Five council members attended the meeting potentially violating the New Jersey Sunshine Law.

Council members were just as divided as the speakers during the public hearing.

“What you saw today is fear mongering. Islamophobia is alive and well. I’m sad to say it’s in the city of Paterson,” said councilman Al Abdelaziz.

“This is about being fair to everyone,” said Khalique. “If churches could ring the bells, why can’t we call the adhan?”

Council members Ruby Cotton and William McKoy pointed out some mosques have been calling the adhan without facing problems.

“We’re attempting to solve a problem that does not exist,” said McKoy, longest serving member of the City Council.

Both Cotton and McKoy said there should be more discussions before the measure is adopted. Khalique pointed out there were four public meetings to discuss the measure.

“We cannot do a law that favors any religion,” added councilman Luis Velez. He cited the Establishment Clause in the U.S. Constitution.

“It is a tough decision we’re making today. As you can see there is already division,” said Davila.

Davila voted in favor of the measure. She was joined by Abdelaziz, Flavio Rivera, Michael Jackson, and Khalique.

Cotton, McKoy, Lilisa Mimms, and Velez voted against.

Cheers erupted after the council granted final approval to the measure.

Many speakers said the measure is dividing a city that’s home to more than 50 ethnic groups.

“This is not to divide the community. I’m trying to be fair and equal. This not about my re-election,” said Khalique.

Khalique is running for re-election in two months. His critics say the measure is a ploy to burnish his image ahead of the election. Khalique suffered a blow last month when it was revealed he had been arrested for intoxicated driving by New Jersey State Police in 2010.

Several speakers suggested the council place the ordinance on the ballot for a referendum.

“This is a melting pot. I want everyone to feel at home in the city,” said Rivera. “If it’s not working, we can revisit it.”

Paterson is home to approximately 30,000 Muslims.

  30. Somalia: AFRICOM says US airstrike kills 5 militants near Janaale, acknowledges civilian casualty reports
    https://thedefensepost.com/2020/03/11/somalia-us-airstrike-al-shabaab-janaale/

“The U.S. conducted an airstrike against al-Shabaab militants near Janaale, Somalia on Tuesday, March 10, U.S. Africa Command said in a press release.

AFRICOM assessed the strike killed five al-Shabaab militants and that no civilians were injured as a result of the strike, but said it was aware of reports on social media of civilian casualties.

A Somali Federal Government statement said a vehicle was also destroyed in the strike in Janaale, which lies about 70 km (44 miles) southwest of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, in the country’s Lower Shabelle region – an al-Shabaab stronghold.

“As with any allegation of civilian casualties, U.S. Africa Command will review any information it has about the incident, including any relevant information provided by third parties, and take appropriate action based on the outcome of this review,” the AFRICOM release read.

U.S. airstrikes against Shabaab increased precipitously after President Donald Trump eased engagement restrictions in 2017 by declaring southern Somalia an “area of active hostilities,” but AFRICOM has admitted only one incident of civilian casualties in more than 150 airstrikes since the U.S. campaign against al-Shabaab began in 2007 – a near perfect record that stands at odds with local reports, drawing criticism from experts and observers. The command is currently preparing to adopt a planned Defense Department-wide civilian casualties policy, set for release later this year.

Tuesday’s strike came a day after AFRICOM targeted the same area. The Somali government said the strike on Monday killed four al-Shabaab fighters and no civilians…”
