“Over the years, villagers who live near Greece’s border with Turkey got used to seeing small groups of people enter their country illegally. The Greek residents often offered the just-arrived newcomers a bite to eat and directed them to the nearest police or railway station.
But the warm welcomes wore off. When Turkey started channelling thousands of people to Greece, insisting that its ancient regional rival and NATO ally receive them as refugees, the Greek government sealed the border and rushed police and military reinforcements to help hold back the flood.
Greeks in the border region rallied behind the expanding border force, collecting provisions and offering any possible contribution to what is seen as a national effort to stop a Turkish-spurred incursion.
In several cases, authorities asked villagers familiar with the local terrain to help locate migrants who managed to slip through holes cut in a border fence or to cross the River Evros – Meric in Turkish – that demarcates most of the 212-kilometre (132-mile) border.
“We were born here, we live here, we work here, we know the crossings better than anyone,” Panayiotis Ageladarakis, a community leader in Amorio, a village that lies some 300 meters (yards) from the river banks.
Other villages also responded to the call for volunteer trackers. Small groups of unarmed men monitor known crossing points after dark.
“We sit at the crossings, and they come,” Ageladarakis told The Associated Press as he drove a pickup truck with a fellow Greek border village resident along a rough track at night. “We keep them there most of the time, call police and they come and arrest them. Then, it’s a matter for the police. We aren’t interested in where they take them. We just try to help this effort taking place by the army and the police.”
Help for the border units also came from Evros businesses and store owners. Nikos Georgiadis, head of the local restaurant owners’ association, said his colleagues delivered food and water to units stationed at four points on the border.
“They also asked us for masks and gloves, and we’ll try to find some,” he said.
Ageladarakis said all the migrants he encountered over the past few days were cooperative.
“These people are frightened. Nobody has caused any trouble,” he said.
But the village community leader said that in his view, the people he encountered did not look like they were fleeing wars in their own countries.
“There’s nobody coming from a war,” he said. “None of them are refugees. They’re all illegal migrants and that’s why they’re trying to get into Europe [this way].”
Greek authorities said that out of the 252 people arrested for illegal entry over the past week as of Friday, 64 per cent were Afghans, 19 per cent Pakistanis, 5 per cent Turks and 4 per cent Syrians, while the others were from Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Egypt.”

“Philippine troops have killed at least 14 Muslim militants aligned with the Islamic State group in a weeklong offensive in a southern province that also left four soldiers dead, a regional military commander said Saturday.
Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said an unspecified number of militants, including gunmen belonging to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, were wounded in clashes in the towns of Ampatuan and Datu Hoffer Ampatuan in Maguindanao province.
The bodies of five of the slain militants were recovered by government forces, he said, adding that 10 soldiers were wounded in the fighting.
The Islamic State group claimed that militants killed 43 soldiers using explosives while repulsing the recent military assaults in two Maguindanao villages, but Sobejana said the claim was “untrue.”
Government forces launched air strikes and artillery fire on an encampment of the militants in Salman village in Ampatuan on Monday after receiving intelligence that the gunmen were plotting attacks, the military said.
Troops later assaulted the encampment and another group of armed militants in Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, seizing firearms, ammunition and homemade bombs, the military said.
The largest Muslim rebel group in the southern region, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, signed an autonomy deal with the government in 2014, ending decades of separatist insurrection.
Its leader and many of its commanders have been appointed to govern a five-province autonomous region under a transitional setup, but smaller hard-line armed groups, including some that have been linked to the Islamic State group, have continued to fight the government.”

“A court in a German city has ruled that the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD) will be allowed to erect a statue of Vladimir Lenin, the mass-murdering founder of the Soviet Union.
The administrative court in Gelsenkirchen overruled the city’s decision to halt the construction of a monument to Vladimir Lenin, the architect of the Russian Revolution of 1917 which birthed the Soviet Union — a state responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of innocent people.
The city had argued that the statue would detract from the historical value of the adjacent savings bank building, but the court ruled that objections over Lenin’s historical atrocities were irrelevant as the statue is to be constructed more than ten meters away from the bank, Deutsche Welle reports.
The Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany hailed the decision by the court, saying: “A few weeks before his 150th birthday, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin has once again won a great victory.”
The move by the court was slammed by Marco Buschmann, a Free Democrats (FDP) member of parliament from Gelsenkirchen, who said: “A Lenin statue would be a disgrace for Gelsenkirchen” as “Lenin stands for mass murder and totalitarianism.”
“Anyone who wants to erect a Lenin statue should ask themselves whether they are still grounded in liberal democratic principles or not,” he added.
In 2017, following the controversy over Confederate memorials in the American South, activists tried to remove a statue of Vladimir Lenin in the city of Seattle. The statue was first installed in the city in the early 1990s after a local man purchased the statue following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Benedict Evans, a local venture capitalist, and over 900 people in a Facebook group named “Seattle, Tear Down This Lenin Statue!” called for the removal of the monument to the communist dictator.
“If one wanted to pull down statues of profoundly evil people, responsible for uncountable human suffering, this one might be on the list,” Evans wrote.
Lenin’s reign as the head of the Soviet Union was marked by mass starvation, the internment of political enemies in gulags (concentration camps), the mass executions of the Red Terror, and the invasion of neighbouring countries.
In his persecution of the kulaks — peasants with over eight acres of land — Lenin ordered his men in one instance to: “1) hang without fail, so that the public sees, at least 100 notorious kulaks, the rich, and the bloodsuckers. 2) Publish their names. 3) Take away all of their grain. 4) Execute the hostages.”
“This needs to be accomplished in such a way, that people for hundreds of miles around will see, tremble, know and scream out: let’s choke and strangle those blood-sucking kulaks,” Lenin commanded.”

Vacancy bill targets our property rights
Leave it to California legislators to identify a real problem and then offer a “solution” that’s so misguided it will make the problem worse and undermine our fundamental rights in the process.
Their approach seems designed mainly for publicity — and to satisfy the demands of vocal community activists who don’t understand how housing markets work.
The problem is the state’s growing housing crisis. As we all know, home values and rents have become increasingly unaffordable, even in lower-income areas.
The latest response is Senate Bill 1079, which would allow city officials to fine owners of vacant houses and also use the power of eminent domain to confiscate private properties if they are empty for more than 90 days. It applies to corporations, but many mom-and-pop investors create corporate entities for investment-home purchases.
After homeless moms commandeered a vacant property in Oakland last year, Democratic Sen. Nancy Skinner of Berkeley championed their cause. “It was totally legitimate” for them “to take over that house,” she said. Fortunately, the courts disagreed, but the owners — a property investment firm — agreed to sell the house at market rates to a community land trust.
California’s high rents are not caused by vacancies.
Owners keep houses vacant for a variety of legitimate reasons. For instance, it takes time to repair and sell a property. Some San Francisco homeowners reportedly leave properties vacant because tenant laws there make it nearly impossible to evict bad tenants. They don’t want to rent their house — and then never be able to get it back again.
This dangerous idea is catching on.
In Los Angeles, Councilman Gil Cedillo has proposed seizing a 124-unit apartment building to keep its owners from converting it to a market-rate complex. Cedillo sees it as a model to protect affordable housing across the city, but it will exacerbate housing shortages.

“Syrians camped on Turkey’s border with Greece believe their hopes of finding sanctuary in the European Union are being undermined by the thousands of other migrants at the frontier who have relatively safe homelands.
Vastly outnumbered by Afghans and Pakistanis at the border, Syrians who have fled their country’s protracted civil war say most of their fellow migrants are jumping on the bandwagon for economic reasons, and then pretending to be Syrian refugees.
“It makes me angry when I meet people from Morocco, Pakistan, and even Afghanistan,” said 20-year-old Yehya Rais from Aleppo, the scene of some of the heaviest fighting during the war.
“If only two to three thousand Syrians were here, maybe Greece would open the border. They know we are genuine refugees,” Rais said.
Thousands of migrants have been trying to get into Greece since Turkey said on Feb. 28 it would no longer try to keep them on its territory, as it had agreed to do with Brussels in 2016 in return for billions of euros in aid.
Turkey said it could no longer contain the hundreds of thousands of migrants it hosts, especially with the likelihood of more refugees fleeing intense fighting in northwestern Syria, but Greece is trying to keep the migrants out.
Rais’s animosity toward his fellow migrants is shared by his friend Labib Morghi.
“There is no war in Morocco, no war in Algeria and no war in Pakistan,” said 16-year-old Morghi. “Even in Afghanistan, the situation is better than in Syria. We had to leave because our government wants to either kill us or displace us.”

Rais and Morghi had left the border camp to charge their phones and breakfast at a shoddy cafe in the village of Karaagac, where old men were playing cards.
At a kiosk next door, North African migrants said they had come to the border without identification documents so they could claim to be Syrians and boost their chances of asylum – should they make it into the European Union.
“Our leaders are corrupt so we have no chance of a decent living,” said Moroccan Bader Abbasi. “If inshallah I make it to Europe I’ll say I’m from Syria otherwise they’ll send me back.”
His friends, sipping Turkish tea, nodded in approval.
Turkish interior minister Suleyman Soylu said on Wednesday that only 20%-25% of the 136,000 migrants who have made it to Europe since it stopped holding them back were Syrian.
Besides their desire for a better future, migrants such as Abbasi have another good reason to pretend to be Syrians.
In Germany, the favored destination in Europe among migrants along with Sweden, almost all Syrians are given some form of protection and are allowed to stay. But more than 20% of Afghan asylum seekers are rejected.
“Everyone here wants a better future,” said Morghi, who is from the northern Syrian city of Idlib.
“But people who have a country to go back to have a luxury we can only dream of. Syria is finished.””

Moments after the arrests, MBS ordered the kingdom’s princes to tweet their loyalty to him. Three of them have already done so.

Reuters quoted sources as saying King Salman himself signed the arrest warrants. They claimed his mental state was good. The king is known to suffer from dementia.
There were concerns on Friday about the fate of Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, once seen as a leading contender for the throne, who was released from detention and torture in the Ritz Carlton in 2017 after paying more than $1bn in a settlement with authorities.

Saying that the EU failed to keep its promises on supporting migrants in Turkey, Ankara recently announced it would no longer try to stop asylum seekers from reaching Europe.
Thousands of asylum seekers have since flocked to Turkey’s Edirne province – which borders Greece and Bulgaria – to make their way to Europe.
The Greek reaction to the asylum seekers has been harsh, with many battered, attacked, and tear-gassed, and several killed by Greek forces.
Turkey, which already hosts nearly 4 million Syrian migrants, more than any other country in the world, said it cannot absorb another refugee wave.”

Up to 5,000 people gathered in Hamburg on Saturday in protest of the German government’s handling of the fresh migrant crisis unfolding at the Turkish-Greek border.
The rally took place in response to the rush by thousands of and migrants and refugees in Turkey — many from Afghanistan, Iran and Syria — towards the EU border last week after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the frontier had been reopened. Germany, along with other EU countries, has maintained that the border remains closed.
“When Europe officially closes its borders and state-condoned violence against those seeking refuge escalates, then everyone needs to go to the streets in solidarity with the right to asylum,” said protest organizer Christoph Kleine of the activist group “Seebrücke” (Sea bridge).
There have been many reports of Greek and EU forces using tear gas and force to prevent people from crossing the border into the European Union.
‘I am ashamed of Europe’
Police put the number of protesters at 3,900, while organizers claim over 5,000 were present. Many chanted: “Hamburg has space,” a reference to some politicians’ claims that Germany does not have enough room to house more migrants and refugees.
“We are more than 5,000 people!” the Seebrücke group wrote on Twitter.
The protest also aimed to draw attention to worsening conditions in the huge Moria migrant camp on the Greek island of Lesbos.
“I am ashamed of Europe,” Heiko Habbe of the migrants’ consultancy group “Fluchtpunkt,” told EPD news agency. Placards on display read “Stop war, not people” and “Help!”
The protesters’ demands echo those made by several German politicians on the left, who have asked Chancellor Angela Merkel to take in vulnerable refugees.
“Putting all political calculation aside, now is the time to act and at the very least get at least children and young unaccompanied refugees out of this situation,” said the center-left Social Democrats’ Michael Müller, mayor of Berlin.

LESBOS – GREECE – BBC – Greece migrant crisis: Refugee centre ablaze as tensions rise
A fire has ripped through a refugee shelter on the Greek island of Lesbos as tensions over a surge in migration from Turkey continue to rise.
Flames engulfed the One Happy Family centre, near the island’s capital Mitilini, on Saturday.
It is not clear how the fire started. No causalities have been reported.
In recent days, there has been hostility towards migrants on Lesbos after an increase in arrivals from Turkey.
Hundreds of migrants have attempted to reach the island since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last week he was “opening the doors” for refugees to enter Europe.

Greece: Building of Swiss aid organization on Lesbos burns
A fire broke out in the community center “One Happy Family” on Lesbos. Corresponding media reports were confirmed by the aid organization of the same name on Facebook. The fire has already been extinguished.
The center is not far from the Kara Tepe refugee accommodation, where around 1,500 refugees and migrants live, including many children and families. “One Happy Family” is used as a meeting point for refugees. In addition to schools, there is a hairdresser, a café and a library.
“The school burned down completely, other smaller buildings and our offices too,” said “One Happy Family”. Nobody was hurt. The organization cannot currently provide any further information.
The Greek news portal “Sto Nisi” previously published a video showing several burning buildings. The fire is said to have broken out around 8:00 in the evening.
In the past weeks there have been repeated acts of violence by right-wing groups on Lesbos, and fires have also been set.
Among other things, a first reception center of the UN refugee agency in the north of the island burned down. It was already closed at the time of the fire.

Locals on Lesbos said they believed international aid workers were coordinating with smugglers and facilitating the movement of migrants to the island, but there was no evidence of such collusion.
On Wednesday, no new dinghies arrived. At least eight Navy and Coast Guard vessels were patrolling the stretch of coastline on the island’s north, and strong winds blew, making the six-mile stretch of water choppy with waves.
“Since we got rid of the NGOs there have been no new migrants coming,” one man said at the Moria village roadblock. “Is that a coincidence? No. That’s it, we’re done, we’re taking back control.”

Unfortunately there has been a fire on OHF ground this evening.
The fire brigade and the police is there, our team on the ground as well.
The fire has been put off, but the damage is big.
The school building is fully burned, some other smaller buildings too, our offices aswell.
No one got hurt, but we can’t say more at the moment.
We will keep you informed and updated as soon as we know more.
