5. Islamic extremists kill Nigerian pastor, attack his hometown

LAGOS, Nigeria — Islamic militants in Nigeria have killed a Christian pastor who had appealed for help in a video just days earlier, and a human rights activist said Tuesday that other extremists attacked his hometown on the same day.

The Rev. Lawan Andimi was abducted earlier this month when Boko Haram militants attacked the Michika local government area, where he was the chairman of a local chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria. He was killed on Monday.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari condemned Andimi’s slaying, calling it “cruel, inhuman and deliberately provocative.”

“I am greatly saddened by the fact that the terrorists went on to kill him even while giving signals of a willingness to set him free by releasing him to third parties,” Buhari tweeted.

6. Italy police raid Venice mosque during prayer for ignoring coronavirus rules

POLICE in Venice have raided a local mosque whilst a service was in progress and warned its leader that he faces a heavy fine for ignoring Coronavirus rules.

The raid was carried out today and more than 200 worshippers ordered home. The local council says the Imam in charge, its religious leader, had ignored the city’s new rules about holding meetings because of the risk involved. He has pledged his ignorance of the orders approved in Venice which have also included the closure of museums, schools, libraries, museums and tourist attractions until at least March 2nd. The annual Carnival which attracts up to 200,000 people was also cancelled.

(Yesterday we posted an interview with the woman who wrote the book, “The Coming Plague” who stated outright that it was the Islamic insistence on going to mosque in numbers that is the reason Iran has become a central locus of the Wuhan Flu. This makes a great deal of sense. But next time you order out for dinner, remember the driver probably was at a mosque near you that day)

The move comes amid a deterioration of stability in Syria’s Idlib, where 33 Turkish soldiers were killed and over 30 injured in an airstrike on Thursday. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed Russian forces for the attack.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu demanded to begin political consultations provided for in Article 4 of the Washington Treaty, which allows a member country to ask for the organization’s assistance if it considers that its security, territorial integrity or political independence are threatened.

(Turkey appears to be demanding NATO help for its push to take over Syria as part of the new Ottoman Empire, and claiming it is the victim of foreign aggression and expecting to pull article 4. If our understanding of this is incorrect, please post in the comments)

    ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that he had asked President Vladimir Putin for Russia to step aside in Syria and leave Turkey to deal with Syrian government forces alone, after 34 Turkish soldiers were killed this week.

    Government forces, backed by Russian air power, have waged a major assault to capture the northwest province of Idlib, part of the last remaining territory held by rebels backed by Turkey.

    Turkish strikes using drones and smart missiles late on Friday that hit Hezbollah headquarters near Saraqeb killed nine of its members and wounded 30 in one of the bloodiest attacks on the Iran-backed group in Syria, according to a commander in the regional alliance backing Damascus.

    The Syrian Observatory said 48 pro-Damascus troops had been killed by Turkish strikes in the past 24 hours.
