I’ve only watched the first part of this, but I think it’s going to be interesting. It’s an award given to the Canadian author Christie Blatchford by the Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, based in Calgary. I looked them up because they’ve been monitoring the case of the father and his daughter in the courts in BC. It really starts around 6:30 minutes they explain what the Center is about, and then at around 15 minutes there’s more about the erosion of freedom in Canada and how the Center is fighting back.

Turks cause bloodbath in Communist Islamist shithole Berlin, Germany
During an attack on several Turks in front of the Berlin Tempodrom in the street Möckernstraße in the district of Kreuzberg, a 42-year-old man was killed on Friday evening, four others were injured by shots. According to police, four perpetrators, who are also of Turkish origin, are now believed to have committed the attack.
During the event, the Tempodrom hosted the “Güldür Güldür Show”, a comedy show that is well known and very popular from Turkish television.
The visitors of the show then had to leave the Tempodrom via side and back entrances.
The perpetrators are on the run.

WATCH: Turkish wedding party terrorizes Berlin, Germany
One of the drivers who caused a stir with their sports cars on the busy intersection at Bahnhof Zoo with wild manoeuvres has turned himself in to the police. The 22-year-old claimed to be the driver of one of the cars involved on Friday afternoon, according to a police spokesperson. According to the police, the man had appeared at a police station in Spandau with a relative. Initially the newspaper “B.Z.” had reported.
A video on Twitter shows how a car first “drifts” in a circle, i.e. deliberately oversteers in a curve. A man stands next to the car at the crossroads and waves a Turkish flag. The car slowly drives into oncoming traffic. A second car then accelerates for a 180-degree turn. This car also swerves excessively. According to the police, the incident took place on Sunday afternoon at the crossing Hardenbergstraße/Joachimsthaler street. The police are investigating on suspicion of dangerous interference with road traffic. Possibly there had also been a forbidden car race. According to first findings, the cars are said to have belonged to a Turkish wedding convoy.

He also said that the area is part of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and that its inhabitants have every right to take all necessary measures to ensure the economic development and stability of the region.
Varosha is technically protected by a 1984 UN Security Council resolution, which says that an empty city can only be inhabited by its original inhabitants. However, the TRNC itself isn’t recognised by the UN, or any country other than Turkey, which is responsible for keeping people out of the ghost town.
In 1974, a devastating war resulted in the partitioning of the island nation of Cyprus, which had been ruled by the Ottomans and then the British before gaining independence, between its Greek and Turkish residents. The intervention in the war of the Turkish military resulted in Varosha’s original Greek inhabitants fleeing, and the resort ended up in Turkish hands when the TRNC was established. Negotiations between the parties on the reunification of the island have so far failed to bear fruit.
The TRNC occupies the northern third of the island of Cyprus; the only authority on the island which is recognised by the international community is the government of the Republic of Cyprus, which is a member state of the European Union.”

IDF Strives to Shorten Future Wars
The Israel Defense Forces this week rolled out its five-year plan to restructure and refocus the military for the threats it believes it will face in the near future. The guiding principle of the plan is to take full advantage of the areas in which the IDF has superiority – air power, intelligence and technology – in order to ensure that Israel maintains a significant edge over its foes.
The IDF plans to use this superiority to win any future war as quickly as possible. To do so, the IDF must significantly improve its ability to identify enemy targets and strike as many as possible as quickly as possible.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kohavi said the plan is based on “the highly increased ability to discover the enemy, on the highly increased ability to destroy the enemy, on integration that allows us to be very, very effective.”

‘Israel is only a decade or two from impenetrable air defenses’
Brig.-Gen. Ran Kochav, commander of the IDF’s air defense program, said Israel’s “air defenses have racked up some 2,000 interceptions. Imagine what would have happened if those missiles had fallen and each one of them had killed someone. We would have been at war long ago.”
The interception rate in 2019 was an unprecedented 94%. “The other side…should decide whether, given these rates of interception, it’s worthwhile for him to start a war, knowing that most of the rockets he fires won’t hit their targets.”
Kochav gives credit to the personnel first, and then to the systems. “My mom is sure that the Color Red siren is automatic, and so is Iron Dome….I go nuts when I hear on the radio that Iron Dome intercepted something. What is Iron Dome? There are soldiers behind it. It’s not automatic.”
“I need intelligence, most of which we collect ourselves, but the Americans help with some. Air defense is the only field in which there is a signed operational directive with the Americans. Nothing else like it exists.” That means “that there is intelligence and operational cooperation in the field of defense.”
Kochav notes that over 50% of the recent recruits to the program have been women. “Everything here is 50-50. I have the most integrated battalions….A woman can serve in any air defense position.”

“Police and crime figures obtained by French media suggest that within the Paris region around 40 per cent of suspects involved in crimes are born overseas.
The figures reveal that the number of foreign-born criminals in the Paris region is twice the number for the rest of France, which sits at around 20 per cent.
In some areas of the city the number of foreign criminals is as high as 47.6 per cent.
According to the proximity security department of the Paris agglomeration (DSPAP), which operates in Paris and several suburbs outside of the city, the proportion of unaccompanied youths involved in crime has increased to 22.7 per cent, Le Figaro reports.
In 2016, foreign youths were accused of involvement in 2.1 per cent of burglaries, up to 13.1 per cent in 2019, while their involvement in violent robberies increased from 4.8 per cent to 16.6 per cent.
Pickpocketing offences among young migrants has also dramatically increased since 2016, from 15.8 per cent to 30.7 per cent.
In 2018, French police working alongside Moroccan police attempted to crack down on migrant youths living and committing various crimes in Paris — but despite making around 1,500 arrests in total, just six of the migrants were actually deported back to their home countries that year.
Last year, one Moroccan illegal migrant faced trial after he had stabbed eight people at random in northern Paris earlier in the year.
The stabbings took place in the notorious La Chapelle area in northern Paris where residents have previously lodged complaints about the deteriorating state of the area.
“This restaurant was my life, my story… But I’m worn out. What do I do when knives fly around customers? When they have lunch on the terrace two metres away from drug traffickers?” a local business owner said.”
Attorney General William Barr and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) had a “shouting match” over the Justice Department nomination of Jessie Liu, NPR reported Friday, citing two sources.
Liu, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, withdrew her nomination on Thursday night amid opposition from conservative senators, some of whom had concerns that the nominee would not be strong enough in opposing abortion rights.
The withdrawal prevented the Trump administration from adding an Asian-American to the top ranks of the Justice Department in a move that would have been a nod toward diversity.

“French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner has announced that in 2019 the French government closed down two radical mosques and placed another 63 under surveillance.
The two radical mosques closed last year were done so under the powers granted to the Interior Ministry by the SILT anti-terrorism laws that were enacted in October 2017 to replace the prior state of emergency.
Castaner added that there have been a total of “31 terrorist attacks since January 1, 2017” and noted that “30 places of worship are subject to closure measures and 7 procedures are underway”. He claimed that health and safety provisions were also being used in certain cases, LCI reports.
Individual administrative control measures (Micas), which replace house arrests, were also up significantly in 2019 by 84 per cent, for a total of 134 cases.
Most of the cases were focused in the Ille-de-France region where Paris and the no-go multicultural suburbs of Seine-Saint-Denis are located.
The four pillars of the SILT anti-terrorism laws — closure of mosques and places of worship, Micas, home visits by authorities, and establishing security perimeters — are being tested by French authorities until the end of this year.
Following the end of the year, the measures will be evaluated as to their efficacy and it will be decided whether the government will extend or modify them.
The closures come just months after French Secretary of State for the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, announced that the government had shut down 30 drinking establishments, 12 places of worship, three schools, and nine associations linked to radical Islam.
Despite the closures, a leaked report from the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI), France’s internal security agency, claimed that as many as 150 neighbourhoods across the country were “held” by Muslim radicals.
The report also noted that in some communities, such as the commune of Maubeuge in the north of the country, Islamist political parties like the Union of French Muslim Democrats (UDMF) saw huge local support.
Some have expressed concern over the rise of the UDMF ahead of the French municipal elections set to take place next month.”
BAGHDAD — At least four rockets hit near the sprawling U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and an Iraqi base hosting American troops inside the Green Zone early Sunday, but caused no casualties and only minor damage, U.S. and Iraqi officials said.
The attack came just before 3:30 a.m. local time, according to Col. Myles B. Caggins III, a spokesman for the U.S. military operation in Iraq. He only said the rockets hit the base hosting U.S. and other coalition forces.

Boris Johnson’s administration may be serious about taking on the BBC, with sources revealing plans to scrap the compulsory television licence which funds it.
At present, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) receives the bulk of its money by levying a compulsory £154.50 licence fee on anyone who watches live colour television — whether or not they consume BBC programming — or BBC iPlayer, with non-payment a criminal offence punished by fines which must be paid on pain of imprisonment.
Some discounts are available for special cases — for example, the blind are entitled to 50 per cent off — and the increasingly negligible portion of the viewing public who use a black and white television set are charged a smaller fee of £52 a year.
But the corporation, which got its start on television at a time when there were no private broadcasters, has come under increasing fire in recent years, with accusations that its current affairs output is biased and its entertainment output politically slanted.
Now, after years of ineffectual grumbling on the issue, the Conservative Party may finally be taking robust action, with Downing Street sources telling The Sunday Times that the Government intends to scrap the ad hoc television tax in favour of a Netflix-style subscription model.

“Strikes killed more than 30 civilians in a mountainous northern Yemeni province Saturday, the U.N. humanitarian chief for the country said, calling the attack “shocking.”
The Yemeni rebels, known as Houthis, accused the Saudi-led coalition of launching retaliatory airstrikes, after they shot down a coalition warplane over the province of Jawf.
Saudi Arabia’s state-run news agency quoted Col. Turki al-Maliki, a spokesman for the coalition, as saying it was investigating “possible collateral damage” from a rescue operation in the area after the downing of the Tornado warplane late Friday.
Al-Maliki was quoted as saying the plane was providing air support for Yemeni government forces fighting the Houthis.
He said the two-pilot crew of the Tornado managed to eject safely before the crash, claiming that the Houthis opened fire on them. He said the Houthis were responsible for the pilots’ “life and safety,” according to Saudi Arabia’s official news agency.
He did not say whether there were causalities or provide further details.
The U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, Lise Grande, said “these terrible strikes” in al-Maslub district killed at least 31 civilians and wounded 12 others, according to preliminary field reports.
“So many people are being killed in Yemen — it’s a tragedy and it’s unjustified. … Five years into this conflict and belligerents are still failing to uphold this responsibility,” she said. “It’s shocking.”
She said many wounded were taken to hospitals in Jawf and Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
Youssef al-Hadri, spokesman for the Houthi-run health ministry, said the airstrikes killed at least 32 people including women and children.
The Iranian-backed rebels released graphic images showing a destroyed building and vehicles, as well as bodies described the attack’s victims.
They also released footage allegedly showing the downing of the Saudi aircraft and its wreckage.
The humanitarian group Save the Children condemned the airstrike, saying it showed that the conflict in Yemen was “not slowing down.”
“This latest attack must be urgently and independently investigated, and perpetrators held to account,” said Xavier Joubert, the charity’s country director in Yemen.
He called for halting arms sales to the warring parties in Yemen’s conflict.
“Those who continue to sell arms to the warring parties must realize that by supplying weapons for this war, they contribute to making atrocities like today’s all too common,” Joubert said.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the pillars of the U.S.-backed coalition, have purchased billions of dollars’ worth of weapons from Western countries, particularity the U.S.
The warplane’s crash and the airstrikes came amid heavy clashes between the government forces and Houthis in the provinces of Marib, Jawf and Sanaa. Hundreds of people, mostly fighters, were killed in the recent clashes that have also forced at least 4,700 families to flee, according to the U.N.
The Yemen conflict began with the 2014 takeover of the capital by the Houthis, who control much of the country’s north along the border with Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led coalition of mostly Arab states intervened in March 2015 trying to restore the internationally recognized government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to power.
In a relentless campaign, Saudi-led airstrikes have hit schools, hospitals and wedding parties and killed thousands of Yemeni civilians. The Houthis have used drones and missiles to attack Saudi Arabia.
The war has killed over 100,000 people, including fighters and civilians, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, which tracks violence reports in Yemen. The war also created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, leaving millions suffering from food and medical shortages.”

Rouhani Says Iran Will Only Negotiate With US if Washington Returns to Nuclear Deal, Lifts Sanctions

“Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has stated that Tehran will only sit down with Washington if the US returns to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and scrap sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
“Iran will never negotiate under pressure … We will never yield to America’s pressure and we will not negotiate from a position of weakness. America’s ‘maximum pressure’ towards Iran is doomed to failure”, Rouhani told reporters in Tehran on Sunday.
He pointed out that the Iranian economy still thrives in the face of the US’ “maximum pressure” policy toward Tehran.
Rouhani also emphasised that “securing peace and stability in the sensitive region of Middle East and in the Persian Gulf is impossible without Iran’s help”.
The statement comes after Rouhani made it clear late last month that Tehran would never look to obtain an atomic weapon, with or without the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“We have never sought nuclear weapons […]. With or without the nuclear deal we will never seek nuclear weapon […]. The European powers will be responsible for the consequences of violating the pact”, Rouhani stressed.
Earlier, Rouhani rejected a proposal for a new “Trump deal” to resolve a nuclear spat as a “strange” offer, blaming the US President for his failure to deliver on promises.
The Iranian President commented on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s previous suggestion to replace the JCPOA with “a Trump deal” in case the current nuclear agreement falls apart. POTUS responded by tweeting that he shares Johnson’s standpoint.
Iran Says It Will Not Stick to JCPOA
On 5 January, Tehran announced that it would no longer comply with the limits of the JCPOA, which was set to considerably reduce Iran’s nuclear programme and its stockpile of medium- and low-enriched uranium in exchange for the removal of international sanctions.
The country announced that it would now start enriching uranium based on its technical needs and in a “peaceful” manner.
The announcement came amid a severe escalation of tensions in the region after top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike on 3 January, which was authorised by President Donald Trump.
Trump signalled Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA on 8 May, 2018, also reimposing tough sanctions against Iran’s banking and energy sectors.
Exactly a year later, Tehran announced that it had suspended some of its obligations under the JCPOA, while adding that it doesn’t want to leave the deal.
Other parties to the agreement attempted to find a mechanism to evade the restrictions to keep the deal alive, with Iran complaining that these efforts weren’t working effectively.

Thai MDs have found that HIV drugs are effective at treating the deadliest effects of this epidemic (pandemic?). This is working from a completely different dataset, but arriving at a congruent treatment – immune system management.
Therefore, I would suggest that if you suspect you may have become infected with this particular disease, self-administer very high doses of anti-histamines in order to stave off the deadly effects of this virus…on the grounds that the side-effects of high doses of anti-histamines are less bad than, say, death.
In conjunction with proper MD treatment, of course.

Racial preferences in Virginia energy law are unconstitutional

Virginia’s new Democratic legislature is passing an energy law that contains racial preferences. But to try to get around constitutional restrictions on racial discrimination, it is primarily targeting such preferences to “predominantly-minority areas,” rather than to minority individuals. This doesn’t immunize this legislation against a constitutional challenge, but it does complicate things for challengers.
Both houses of the Virginia legislature have passed passed the “Virginia Clean Economy Act” (VCEA). It will increase residents’ utility bills a lot in the years to come. It also provides jobs and job training reserved for areas that are predominantly minority or predominantly lower income (HB 1526 and SB 851).
The VCEA requires a utility, in constructing an offshore wind generation facility, to “give priority to the hiring of local workers, including workers” from “a community in which a majority of the population are people of color.” Such facilities are likely to cost billions to construct, paid for by higher utility bills.
The VCEA also requires that 50% of deficiency payment revenue from the RPS (Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard Program) be directed to “job training programs” and 30% of revenue be directed to “renewable energy programs” in “historically economically disadvantaged communities,” which include low-income communities or any “community in which a majority of the population are people of color.” This is expected to be a lot of revenue, because it is what utilities will pay if they fail to hit their renewable energy targets, and few expect them to meet their targets.

“I’m proposing … that when a community that is very much in need of growing its population, recognizes that, and makes a choice to welcome more than its share of new Americans,” Buttigieg said, “that we create a fast-track, if they apply for an allotment of visas.”

“CORONAVIRUS spread from a science laboratory in Wuhan and not a ‘wet market’, a group of Chinese scientists have sensationally claimed.
They said scientists researching bat diseases could be responsible for the global outbreak, in a bombshell report published this week. Their report details how sick bats urinated, attacked and bled on researchers, who did their best to quarantine themselves. But the disease still spread through Wuhan, across China and throughout the world.
The new report by biological scientists from the prestigious South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China, contradicts Beijing, who said it spread from contaminated bats being sold at a food market.
Biologists Botao Xiao and Lei Xiao, published a pre-print entitled “The possible origins of 2019-nCoV coronavirus”, in the report they described how “the killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan”.
The report added: “We noted two laboratories conducting research on bat coronavirus in Wuhan, one of which was only 280 metres from the seafood market.
“We briefly examined the histories of the laboratories and proposed that the coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory
“Our proposal provided an alternative origin of the coronavirus in addition to natural recombination and intermediate host.”
The scientists in the alarming report contested official findings that the pathogen first made the jump from bats to humans in the Wuhan wet market.
They said: “The probability was very low for the bats to fly to the market.
“According to municipal reports and the testimonies of 31 residents and 28 visitors, the bat was never a food source in the city, and no bat was traded in the market.
“There was possible natural recombination or intermediate host of the coronavirus, yet little proof has been reported.”
The researchers screened the area around the seafood market and identified two laboratories conducting research on bat coronavirus.
These laboratories were within 280 meters of the market, one is called the Wuhan Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
The research concludes that this laboratory hosted animals for research purposes, one of which was specialised in pathogens collection and identification.
The paper claimed: “In one of their studies, 155 bats including Rhinolophus affinis were captured in Hubei province, and another 450 bats were captured in Zhejiang province.
The expert who studied the collection of bats at the laboratory had described how he was once “attacked by bats and the blood of a bat shot onto his skin”.
The paper added: “He knew the extreme danger of the infection so he quarantined himself for fourteen days.
“In another accident, he quarantined himself again because bats urinated on him.”
The scientists claim the laboratory is beside the Union Hospital where the first group of doctors were infected during this epidemic.
The paper concluded: “It is plausible that the virus leaked out and contaminated the initial patients in this epidemic, though solid proofs are needed in future studies.”
A second laboratory was identified around seven miles from the seafood market, belonging to Wuhan Institute of Virology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
This laboratory reported the Chinese horseshoe bats are a natural reservoir for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV, which caused the 2002 to 2003 pandemic.
It is alleged in the findings the principal investigator from that laboratory had been developing a project which generated a chimeric virus using the SARS-CoV in a technique of genetic engineering called the reverse genetics method.
The paper speculates ARS-CoV or its genetically modified derivative might have leaked from the laboratory.
The scientists said: “In summary, somebody was entangled with the evolution of 2019-nCoV coronavirus.
“In addition to origins of natural recombination and intermediate host, the killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan.
“Safety levels may need to be reinforced in high risk bio-hazardous laboratories.
“Regulations may be taken to relocate these laboratories far away from city centres and other densely populated places.”

On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded that Syrian forces pull out of the Idlib de-escalation zone immediately, warning of a full-scale Turkish offensive if Damascus failed to do so. Tensions between Syria and Turkey escalated on Monday after a Syrian Army artillery strike struck a Turkish observation post, killing eight and injuring several others. Turkey responded by firing on dozens of Syrian Army targets. The Russian military warned Turkey against “irresponsible statements” and actions, saying these could only lead to an escalation of the situation. Moscow also accused Ankara of failing to live up to its commitments to separate ‘moderate opposition’ fighters from jihadist terrorists.
Syria kicked off an anti-terrorist operation in Idlib late last year, after repeated violations by militants of a 2017 ceasefire brokered by Russian, Iran and Turkey. This week, Damascus said it would continue its campaign in Idlib and throughout the country, notwithstanding Turkish threats.”
BBC Petr Pavlensky: Russian activist’s girlfriend held over Macron ally sex video
French police have arrested a woman in connection with the release of a sex video that brought down a political ally of President Emmanuel Macron.
Alexandra de Taddeo is the girlfriend of activist Petr Pavlensky. Both were detained on Saturday but police did not initially reveal her arrest.
She was arrested on charges of invasion of privacy and distributing personal images without consent, officials said.
The video scuppered Benjamin Griveaux’s candidacy for mayor of Paris.
It was published on a little-known website that alleged Mr Griveaux, 42, had exchanged intimate mobile phone messages and footage with a young woman.
Ms de Taddeo is suspected of being the recipient of the intimate footage, France’s Le Figaro newspaper reported on Sunday, quoting the Paris prosecutor’s office.
Mr Pavlensky, a Russian who sought asylum in France in 2017, earlier said that he was responsible for posting the video, which showed a man involved in a sexual act.
He was detained on Saturday as part of a separate investigation into an alleged brawl in Paris on 31 December involving “wilful violence with a weapon”.
Prosecutors later said that Ms de Taddeo, whom he had reportedly been in a relationship with since January 2019, was being held over the widely condemned release of the footage of Mr Griveaux.
The politician had filed an invasion of privacy complaint hours before she was detained.

The distribution of the clip, which spread quickly across social media last Thursday, brought condemnation from across the political spectrum.

Who is Petr Pavlensky?
The 35-year-old first gained notoriety by nailing his scrotum to Moscow’s Red Square in 2013. He fled Russia and sought asylum in France when he was accused by the authorities of a sexual assault that he denied.
He served seven months in jail for setting the front door of the FSB intelligence agency on fire in Moscow and later caused minor damage to a Banque de France branch by setting that alight.
Before his arrest, he told French news channel LCI that Mr Griveaux was only the first politician that he would target, saying he would carry on fighting the “propaganda and puritanism of politicians”.
French media have traditionally avoided prying into the private lives of people in public life and a number of figures have referred distastefully to the “Americanisation” of politics.

Germany: Thousands denounce Thuringia election scandal in central Erfurt
Thousands of people gathered in central Erfurt on Saturday before marching through the city to protest against the recent election scandal in Thuringia which led to the resignations of the state’s Minister President Thomas Kemmerich and leader of Germany’s governing Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.

“The posting showed a man making a live video, which was recorded by Jen KL, showing the person intentionally stepping on the Quran on a bed, ” he said in a statement here on Saturday (Feb 15).
ACP Dzulkhairi added that the suspect was also apparently recorded insulting the religion.
“The case is being investigated and we are tracking down the suspect, ” he said, adding that police had classified the case under Section 295 of the Penal Code, Section 298 of the same Act and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.
ACP Dzulkhairi also advised the public to be careful in sharing or uploading videos on social media that touched on racial sensitivity, especially involving religion.

‘More guidance and regulation’: Zuckerberg requests government rules on ‘what discourse should be allowed’
MUNICH — Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg called on Western governments to provide regulatory guidance for how social media companies can identify the boundaries of “what discourse should be allowed” on their platforms.
“There should be more guidance and regulation from the states on basically — take political advertising as an example — what discourse should be allowed?” Zuckerberg told an assembly of Western leaders Saturday at the Munich Security Conference. “Or, on the balance of free expression and some things that people call harmful expression, where do you draw the line?”
Facebook has faced accusations of mismanagement since Russia launched a series of high-profile election interference operations against Western countries, most notably the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, said federal legislation is necessary to counteract anti-conservative “political censorship,” while European Union officials are mulling antitrust proposals targeting Facebook.
“There are a lot of decisions in these areas that are really just balances between different social values,” Zuckerberg said. “It’s about coming up with an answer that society feels is legitimate and that they can get behind and understand that you drew the line here on the balance of free expression and safety. It’s not just that there’s one right answer. People need to feel like, ‘OK, enough people weighed in, and that’s why the answer should be this, and we can get behind that.’”
That argument gives a preview of the charm offensive that Zuckerberg will attempt during his meetings next week with European Union officials. His meeting in 2018 with members of the European Parliament backfired, as Zuckerberg’s performance left European Union leaders stewing that he had avoided giving specific answers to their most pressing questions. This time, he is prepared to argue that regulations are necessary to preserve free speech and privacy rights from authoritarian rule-makers.
“We need to make sure that the internet can continue to be a place where everyone can share their views openly and where the legal framework around this is one that encodes democratic values,” he said. “I do think that as part of that, we’ve got to move forward on regulation. Hopefully, we move forward quickly before a more authoritarian model gets adopted in a lot of places first.”
