  1. To a communist, the point is not how good socialism is, the point is always how bad capitalism is. Sure, the leftist might concede that there are problems in Cuba but then they will go on to tell you how much worse it was under capitalism. It is the very idea of working for somebody else (The Man) that truly appalls them. To a communist, it would be better to be locked in the Auschwitz Birkenau Death Camp than to have a job at BOEING and have “The Man” tell him where to go and what to do and when to do it – an abomination. Seriously. Communists believe that working a regular job is a living death that is worse than anything imaginable and they are quite willing to stand in the gas-lineup to avoid it…

    • Not to mention have the government tell them exactly what to do, say, think and not do, say or think for 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

      Even the guy with a crap job he hates is only obliged to follow instructions for the hours he gets paid for and can quit anytime.

      • Ah, but being told what to do by the government is nothing but a necessary part of cooperating with the People, not in the least the same as working for a soulless capitalist boss for nothing other than his enrichment. The socialist is always working toward the greater good and a common purpose while the capitalist can only see the profits accrued in the next quarter therefore the capitalist is living a completely pointless life. They have no souls and are literally a suicide cult. No matter how fucked up it may be socialism is always preferable to the dreaded scourge that is CAPITALISM…

  2. FYI: Before Castro Cuba was second in the Western Hemisphere in meat protean consumption, had a higher literacy rate the both the US and Canada. It had more Doctors per capita then all of the other nations in the Western Hemisphere. There was free travel in and out of Cuba and hardly anyone left Cuba, there were more Americans living in Cuba then Cubans living in the US. And during WWII Prior to the US joining the Allies Cuba took in more Jewish Refugees then the US and Canada.

    Yes Batista was a brutal Dictator but compared to Castro he was a gentle loving man. Yes he made deals with the Mafia and helped them run casinos in Cuba after Nevada started trying to move the Mafia out of that state but the casino workers were paid excellent wages which they spent freely on the many food and luxury items that were available to everyone.

    • Many of the early Spanish and Portuguese settlers of the island had been Crypto-Jews. They had strong ties with trading companies in Amsterdam, Hamburg, and New Amsterdam (which became New York).

      Sephardim from the crumbling Ottoman Empire settled in Cuba early in the 19th century. Assimilation was fairly easy for these speakers of Ladino, mostly from the Balkans.

      Then came the Ashkenazim, trying to escape pogroms and the deteriorating situation in Europe. They wanted to come to the USA, of course, but we didn’t want them.

      My mother’s family used to visit relatives in Cuba every winter. After Castro, they all left with little more than the clothes on their backs.

    • It was an amazing place.
      The Sephardim, called turcos in Cuba, and the Ashkenazim, called polacos, lived as separate from each other as if on different islands.

      Too many Cubanos were treated like dirt under the corrupt Batista and the gangsters he cultivated. As in the first clip of yours, Malca, they got none of the tourist dollars in those days either.

      But they had no idea how bad things would get with Castro and his Soviet compadres.

  4. Just as I expected, behind the old, old cars (there are no new ones) and the prettily painted buildings and the happy music, is an impoverished country with buildings that are falling down, and you cannot even catch yourself a fish without breaking the law (it belongs to the State).
