(ANSA) – Perugia, October 28 – Centre-right candidate Donatella Tesei won Sunday’s regional election in Umbria in a landslide, claiming 57.55% of the vote, while Vincenzo Bianconi, the candidate backed by the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), got only 37.48%.
The M5S and the PD, who were fierce rivals until recently, teamed up in a bid to end a long series of victories in regional elections by the League-led centre right.
They had formed a pact at the national level for a new government in August after League leader Matteo Salvini pulled the plug on the first government led by Premier Giuseppe Conte, which was based on an alliance between the M5S and the League.
But the PD-M5S ‘experiment’ was given the thumbs down by Umbrian voters.
Salvini’s League was again the driving force of the centre-right’s triumph, winning 36.9%, compared to 14% in the last round of elections in the central region.

B’nai Brith Canada is deeply concerned after learning that a federal grant was used to produce a guide instructing Canadian Muslims on how to vote in last Monday’s national election.
The “Canadian Muslim Voting Guide: Federal Election 2019” was released by the Canadian Islamophobia Industry Research Project at Wilfred Laurier University on Oct. 18, just three days before Canadians went to the polls. Its front cover acknowledges support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), a federal agency that assigns research grants.

One of the men convicted of murdering soldier Lee Rigby was today jailed for a further eight months after he admitted attacking a nurse in Broadmoor hospital.
Michael Adebowale, 28, pleaded guilty to punching a healthcare assistant while being held in the secure hospital in Crowthorne, Berkshire, on July 20 last year.
After denying a more serious charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm, Adebowale admitted an alternative charge of assault causing actual bodily harm at Reading Crown Court today.
Adebowale was given a eight-month prison sentence by Mr Justice Jay which will be served after his 45-year minimum term for the murder of the Fusilier in Woolwich, South East London, in 2013.
He is currently serving his sentence at Broadmoor and is expected to stay there for the next few years to be treated for paranoid schizophrenia.
