  1. NEWSWEEK – TRUMP APPROVES SPECIAL OPS RAID TARGETING ISIS LEADER BAGHDADI, MILITARY SAYS HE’S DEAD

he United States military has conducted a special operations raid targeting one of its most high-value targets, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), Newsweek has learned. President Donald Trump approved the mission nearly a week before it took place.

Amid reports Saturday of U.S. military helicopters over Syria’s northwestern Idlib province, a senior Pentagon official familiar with the operation and Army official briefed on the matter told Newsweek that Baghdadi was the target of the top-secret operation in the last bastion of the country’s Islamist-dominated opposition, a faction that has clashed with ISIS in recent years.

A U.S. Army official briefed on the results of the operation told Newsweek that Baghdadi was killed in the raid, and the Defense Department told the White House they have “high confidence” that the high-value target killed was Baghdadi, but further verification is pending. The senior Pentagon official said Baghdadi had killed himself by detonating a suicide vest.

Members of a team from the Joint Special Operations Command carried out Saturday’s high-level operation after receiving actionable intelligence, according to sources familiar with the operation. The location raided by special operations troops had been under surveillance for some time.

On Saturday night, after the operation had concluded, President Trump tweeted: “Something very big has just happened!”

The White House announced later that the president will make a “major statement” Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

    • Daesh Leader Baghdadi Reportedly Killed by US Special Forces in Raid Approved by Trump (sputniknews, Oct 27, 2019)
      https://sputniknews.com/military/201910271077158843-deash-leader-baghdadi-reportedly-killed-by-us-special-forces-in-raid-approved-by-trump/

“Earlier Saturday, US President Trump cryptically tweeted that “something very big has just happened.” Later that day, an undisclosed “major statement” by the president was announced for Sunday morning.

The US military has conducted a special operations raid targeting Daesh* leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, a Newsweek report says.

The raid, which took place Saturday, was approved by the president a week prior, the report says.

Iraqi intelligence agencies helped to locate Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, the infamous former leader of daesh, Iraqi state TV cited a terror group expert as saying.

A high-ranking source in Iraqi intelligence confirmed that Baghdadi had been liquidated in Syria’s Idlib province, INA news agency reported.

Iraqi state TV said that it will air footage of the raid that killed Baghdadi.

A senior Pentagon official and a US Army official told Newsweek that Baghdadi was the target of a top-secret operation in Syria’s Idlib province.

The US Army official said that Baghdadi was killed during the raid. The Pentagon source added that the department has “high confidence” that a high-value target killed during the raid was Baghdadi, but that further verification is underway.

The report notes that the raid took place in the Idlib province, currently controlled by Syrian Islamist militias, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham – the former Nusra Front – which clashed with Daesh in recent years.

The raid was authorized after the Joint Special Operations Command received “actionable intelligence,” as the target location had been under surveillance for some time, the report says.

Earlier on Saturday, Trump posted a cryptic tweet, saying that “something very big has just happened,” gathering more than 45,000 comments.

Later that day, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley announced that Trump would make a “major statement” Sunday morning at 9 a.m. EST (1300 GMT), without providing further details.”

      • Lebanese TV Channel Names Baghdadi Possible Successor as Trump Confirms Daesh Leader’s Death (sputniknews, Oct 27, 2019)
        https://sputniknews.com/world/201910271077161613-baghdadi-destruction-successor-president-trump/

“…The Beirut-based pan-Arab satellite television channel Al Mayadeen has suggested that possible successors of the late Daesh* leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi could include his two aides Abu Abdel Rahman al-Jezrawi and Abu Osman al-Farancy…”

        • From the reports I have heard Bagghdadi isn’t the end of ISIS but it is the end of the Sunni Arab dream of a Sunni Arab controlled Caliphate. This leaves a Trukish leader trying to re-establish the Ottoman Empire and the Iranian leaders trying to re-establish the Persian Empire. Right now we have Russia and thanks to some new decisions by Trump the US setting in the middle playing the two against each other.

One of Trumps good points is that when he makes a mistake he changes his plans to correct the mistake. He is movinig people around in Syria and Iraq but is keeping people over there to get intelligence that we will need in the coming decades.

One thing I noticed about this raid, it wasn’t done with the Seals, it was Delta Force and the Rangers. Both have been very active i n this war but the Berets learned to avoid publicity in Nam, the publicity they got almost destroyed them. Delta which is an outgrowth of the Berets (they do have members of other branches) has followed the Berrets lead and avoided the limelight.

          • One of Trumps good points is that when he makes a mistake he changes his plans to correct the mistake.

            Indeed.
He doesn’t announce it, he just recalibrates and moves on.

Dealing with the Turk must be like handling a filthy, slippery, poisonous snake. PT has made two mistakes during phone calls with him. Maybe distracted by sheer disgust.

          • Also, it shows he’s responsive to constructive criticsm. Sure, he loves his base, but he’s strong enough to listen to voices outside the amen-chorus.

He heard LOTS of them since Oct. 7. That’s for sure. One or two of the best analysts of that region in the world.

    • the daily wire – Defense Officials Release Shocking Details Of Al-Baghdadi Raid: ‘Six Helicopters,’ ’50-70 Members Of Delta Force’

Defense Department officials are slowly leaking out details of the shocking raid in western Syria that resulted in the death of ISIS mastermind, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi — and there may even be video of the exact moment al-Baghdadi detonated his own suicide vest, killing himself and several members of his family so that he couldn’t be taken alive by the American military.

The Daily Mail reports that “between 50 and 70 members of the US Army Delta Force and Rangers flew in on six helicopters and surrounded al-Baghdadi during the overnight raid in Syria’s Idlib province,” per sources.

The attack had been planned for weeks, President Donald Trump told reporters during a press conference Sunday morning, and a special team of soldiers was amassed for the raid. The team knew, based on information from friendly intelligence sources in the area, that al-Baghdadi was “lurking in Syrian border towns, often wearing non-traditional or ‘regular’ clothes, using a civilian car, and making sure anyone around him had no mobile phones or electronic devices in order to bypass detection,” according to Fox News.

Al-Baghdadi arrived at the compound where he ultimately perished a mere 48 hours before the U.S. military’s raid. He was accompanied there by two of his wives and several of his children, all of whom were outfitted with suicide vests.

Defense officials said Sunday that the team made several attempts to capture the ISIS bigwig — easily the world’s most wanted terrorist — but aborted them. The raid that took place sometime between Friday evening and Sunday morning in Syria was successful.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper told ABC News’s “This Week” that “[t]he stars started lining up some time ago…It wasn’t until Thursday and then Friday the president chose his option and gave us the green light to proceed.”

Esper called the President’s move a “bold decision.” He added that special operations forces came in by helicopter and were on the ground for more than two hours, with less than 100 U.S. forces deployed in the raid. There were no American deaths, though two soldiers and one military canine reportedly sustained “minor injuries.”

The operation to capture or kill al-Baghdadi also appears to have come in the middle of a larger offensive on ISIS positions in and near Barisha, Syria. The Daily Mail reports that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented a two-hour air raid on known ISIS positions sometime late Saturday, involving eight helicopters and a “warplane.”

Photos of burned out buildings and cars in Barisha emerged Sunday morning.

Newsweek added that a senior administration official confirmed a “brief firefight” between the ISIS leader and American forces before al-Baghdadi reportedly raced into escape tunnels that connected to his temporary home.

According to President Donald Trump, who detailed al-Baghdadi’s final moments in his statement to the press Sunday morning, al-Baghdadi was wearing a suicide vest and took several members of his family, including at least three of his children, with him when he detonated his own explosives.

“He reached the end of the tunnel as our dogs chased him down. He ignited his vest, killing himself and the three children,” Trump said. “His body was mutilated by the blast. the tunnel had caved in on it, in addition. But test results gave certain, immediate and totally positive identification. It was him. The thug who tried so hard to intimidate others spent his last moments in utter fear, in total panic and dread, terrified of the American forces bearing down on him.”

Defense officials seemed to indicate that American forces eliminated al-Baghdadi’s compound after the terrorist leader was confirmed dead.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a video, appearing to show the detonation that marked the last moments of al-Baghdadi’s life, made the rounds on social media. The video has yet to be confirmed, according to CNN, but the location and timing of the blast shown in the video seems to match the timeline of the U.S. special forces raid.

Al-Baghdadi has been at the top of the United States’ most wanted list since 2014, when he took the reins of the Islamic State, declaring himself the head of a “Caliphate,” and the mastermind of a terrorist network that operated in as many as 30 countries and is likely responsible for killing at least 2,000 people and enslaving, torturing, and displacing thousands of others.

ABC News – Defense secretary on al-Baghdadi raid

    • Syria: US reported killing of al-Baghdadi was joint operation with SDF – SDF spokesperson

Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) spokesperson Kino Gabriel said that the reported US special forces operation, which led to the killing of the leader of the self-proclaimed Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was the result of close cooperation between the SDF and the United States, during an official (SDF) press statement, in al-Hasakah on Sunday.

“The operation took place after our military intelligence documented over the past months the presence of high-ranking ISIS leaders including al-Baghdadi in areas under the military control of the Turkish state,” Gabriel announced to the press.

Gabriel emphasised that the operation was delayed for over a month due to the Turkish incursion saying that “We warn the world of the danger that jihadi factions with the Turkish army may enter Ras al-Ain and Tel Abyad areas occupied by Turkey-backed militias and that the region could become another safe-haven in which ISIS may find opportunities to re-organise.”

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced that the leader of the self-proclaimed Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed in an operation led by US special forces. According to Trump’s announcement, Baghdadi blew himself up with an explosives vest, after reaching a dead-end tunnel while attempting to flee.

  3. Iranian Lawmaker Reiterates Threat to Destroy Israel Within 30 Minutes if It ‘Makes Mistake’ (sputniknews, Oct 27, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201910271077159258-israel-iran-us-tensions-middle-east/

“Referring to Tehran’s previous pledge to obliterate Israel, the Jewish state’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned earlier this year that Iran is within range of Israeli warplanes.

Mojtaba Zannour, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, has reiterated his threat that Israel “will not live for longer than twenty or thirty minutes” if Tel Aviv or Washington “makes a mistake”.

“We have employed a strategy of asymmetric warfare. What does this mean? It means making our enemy’s strengths ineffective or less effective – taking advantage or their weaknesses. We have focused and worked on these things. The [Iranian] regime has created deterrence,” Zannour told Iran’s Channel 5 news outlet.

Earlier this year, he told the Tehran-based Arabic language news TV network al-Alam that if the US attacks Iran, “only half an hour will remain of Israel’s lifespan”.

In the Channel 5 interview, he referred to “36 American military bases in the [Middle East] region”, saying that Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are “online and are tracking every change in the forces at the US bases in the area.

“If they shoot, they will be hit. When the [Supreme Iranian] Leader [Ayatollah Ali Kamenei] says that the days of hit-and-run are over, he is not speaking out of emotion or excitement. His words are backed up by what has already been done,” Zannour underscored.
Iranian MP Warns Washington not to Lecture Tehran
Touching upon the downing of a US drone by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) over the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf this summer, Zannour slammed Washington for lecturing Tehran on what it is obliged to do.

“Even after the story of their drone, they [the US] told us: ‘Our hegemony will be ruined. Evacuate this or that area so that we can attack there.’ [The Americans] wanted to repair [the damage done to them]. We said that this is like capturing hostages. If you have to pay money to be released, what guarantee do you have that they will not do it again? This is why the Islamic Republic resisted, and they [the US] did not attack. If we adhere to a culture of resistance, this will guarantee the country’s security”, he asserted.
Iranian Lawmaker Touts Tehran’s Deterrence Concept
Separately, Zannour focused on the future of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). In May 2018, US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the deal, also reinstating harsh economic sanctions against Tehran. Exactly a year later, the Islamic Republic suspended the implementation of some of its JCPOA obligations, stressing at the same time that it doesn’t want to scrap the deal.

“The fact that we exist today and that we have a position and make demands about why the JCPOA is not being implemented, and our president travels honourably throughout the world […] is all thanks to our defensive deterrence and those missiles that have ‘Death to Israel’ written on them,” Zannour concluded.
He spoke after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned during his public remarks at an Israeli Air Force base earlier this year that Iran should remember that Israeli warplanes “can reach anywhere in the Middle East, including Iran, and certainly Syria”.

Earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz told the Herzliya Conference that the Jewish state is bracing itself for its possible military involvement in the event of an escalation in the political standoff between Iran and the US.

He singled out “mistaken calculations by the [Iranian] regime” that he claimed may bring about a “military conflagration” in the Middle East region.
Iran’s Tense Ties With Israel, US
This comes amid frozen relations between Israel and Iran, with the Jewish state repeatedly accusing Iran of establishing a permanent military presence in Syria.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have been conducting airstrikes against what they have claimed were Iranian military targets in Syria, while Tehran argues that it has only been sending military advisers to Damascus to help it fight terrorism.

Iran, which denies Israel’s right to exist, has also ramped up its stern rhetoric against Israel, promising to wipe it off the political map.

As for the US-Iranian tensions which have been simmering since Washington’s withdrawal from the JCPOA last year, they escalated in June following an apparent sabotage attack against two oil tankers off Iran’s coast in the Gulf of Oman.

Washington immediately blamed Tehran for the attacks, while the Iranian Foreign Ministry accused the Trump administration and its Israeli and Gulf State allies of deliberately escalating the situation to “cover up” the US’ “economic terrorism against Iran”.”

McConnell Senate Challenger Attends Dinner Hosted by Hamas-Linked CAIR
BY ROBERT SPENCER OCTOBER 26, 2019CHAT 3 COMMENTS
Would Amy McGrath, who hopes to take Mitch McConnell’s Senate seat away from him, attend a dinner hosted by a Nazi group? Of course not. Would she show her face hosted by a group that opposed jihad terror? Not on your life. But in a sign of how topsy-turvy the Left’s moral compass has become, she didn’t hesitate to attend a dinner hosted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). In light of what CAIR stands for and its appalling track record, how is that different from attending a Nazi function?

CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case — so named by the Justice Department. CAIR officials have repeatedly refused to denounce Hamas and Hizballah as terrorist groups. Several former CAIR officials have been convicted of various crimes related to jihad terror. CAIR’s cofounder and longtime Board chairman (Omar Ahmad), as well as its chief spokesman (Ibrahim Hooper), have made Islamic supremacist statements about how Islamic law should be imposed in the U.S. (Ahmad denies this, but the original reporter stands by her story.) CAIR chapters frequently distribute pamphlets telling Muslims not to cooperate with law enforcement. CAIR has opposed virtually every anti-terror measure that has been proposed or implemented and has been declared a terror organization by the United Arab Emirates. CAIR’s Hussam Ayloush in 2017 called for the overthrow of the U.S. government. CAIR’s national outreach manager is an open supporter of Hamas.

If Amy McGrath knows any of that, she shows no sign of caring. According to the Washington Free Beacon, the “Kentucky chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, known best as CAIR, posted multiple pictures of McGrath in attendance at its annual dinner on May 11, 2019. She is currently featured in the main photo of the group’s Facebook page.”

Kentucky Senate candidate Amy McGrath is photographed at a CAIR Kentucky dinner (via CAIR Kentucky Facebook page)
In response to criticism, the McGrath campaign has maintained that the CAIR dinner was an entirely benign “interfaith event.” McGrath’s campaign manager, Mark Nickolas, insisted that “Amy attended an interfaith event joined by a rabbi and a Baptist preacher and sponsored by the University of Kentucky.” Nothing to see here. Move along.

Not only is there nothing to see there, but there is nothing to see in the fact that one of the donors to McGrath’s failed 2018 campaign for the House of Representatives was none other than the virulently anti-Semitic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. She gave McGrath $1,000.

Now, imagine for a moment that a Republican candidate for the Senate had received during a previous campaign a $1,000 donation from a member of the House of Representatives who had become notorious for racist and white supremacist statements. Imagine further that this same candidate had attended a dinner hosted by a group that had been identified by the Justice Department as having links to the Ku Klux Klan. Do you think that the establishment media’s reaction would be the resolute indifference with which “journalists” have greeted the news of McGrath’s presence at the CAIR dinner?

Unfortunately, the willful ignorance and moral myopia that would be required of anyone attending a dinner of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is not limited to Amy McGrath. CAIR chapters around the country frequently post photographs of politicians great and small who come to their events hoping to secure Muslim votes. Instead of being ashamed, these politicians generally preen about having been there, and bask in the glow of adulatory press coverage about their commitment to “inclusion” and “diversity.” These include Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who spoke last March at CAIR-Minnesota’s “Challenging Islamophobia” conference. That was just a few days after Washington state governor and then-presidential hopeful Jay Inslee welcomed CAIR officials to the state capital. In 2018, Illinois Congressman Mike Quigley was a featured speaker at CAIR’s Chicago “Resistance” Banquet.

This is a bipartisan cluelessness. McGrath, Walz, Inslee, and Quigley are Democrats, but there are plenty of Republican useful idiots as well. Foremost among these was former President George W. Bush, who was standing in a mosque with CAIR’s CEO Nihad Awad when he proclaimed Islam a religion of peace six days after 19 Muslims murdered 3,000 Americans in the name of Allah and in accord with the teachings of the Qur’an about waging war against unbelievers.

That any American politician of any political camp would appear at any function of this unsavory group speaks to the confusion of our age, and of how casual U.S. officials have become in their acceptance of hatred for the country they are supposed to be serving.

  5. Pakistan Denies Indian PM Modi Permission to Use Its Airspace for Saudi Arabia Journey – Report (sputniknews, Oct 27, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/asia/201910271077159639-pakistan-india-prime-minister-modi/

“The move comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan over the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Islamabad has rejected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s permission to use Pakistani airspace for his visit to Saudi Arabia slated for 28-29 October.

The decision has been conveyed to the Indian High Commissionn in Islamabad, government officials said on Sunday.

The move comes after Islamabad rejected an official request from India last month to allow Modi’s flight to cross Pakistani airspace for travelling to the US for UN General Assembly session on 20 September and also for a return flight on 28 September.

“Considering the situation in Kashmir and the kind of barbarism and atrocities carried out by India in Kashmir, Pakistan has rejected the request”, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said.

Earlier that month, Islamabad rejected a request by India to allow its President Ram Nath Kovind to use Pakistani airspace during his flight to Iceland “in view of India’s behaviour”.

The developments come against the backdrop of rising tensions between India and Pakistan over the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

On 5 August, the Indian government announced that it was revoking the special status of the region as determined by Article 370 of the constitution.

Under the law, the state had an autonomous constitution and could make its own decisions, except on defence, foreign affairs, and communications.

Pakistan reacted angrily to what it described as an “illegal” move, promising to protect Kashmiris. Islamabad expelled the Indian ambassador, halted bilateral trade and promised to raise the issue with the International Court of Justice.”

This week three appeal judges finally ruled that his criminal offending, which included a sexual assault on a woman and an assault on a police officer, was so serious that he must be deported to Algeria.

  7. British Police Have Foiled 24 Terrorist Plots Since 2017 (breitbart, Oct 27, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/10/27/uk-police-have-foiled-24-terrorist-plots-since-2017/

“London’s Metropolitan Police Force says that it has foiled 24 terrorist plots over the past two years. Radical Islamic terrorism remains the most significant threat.

Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, said that investigators had foiled 24 terror plots since the Islamic State-inspired 2017 Westminster Bridge attack carried out by Khalid Masood, which left dozens injured and five dead.

Sixteen of the 24 plots were connected to radical Islam, and extreme right groups hatched the remaining eight, Ms Dick said in comments reported by the Manchester Evening News.

In September, Neil Basu, Britain’s top anti-terror police officer, said that foiled terror plots had risen from 19 to 22, of which 15 were Islamist inspired. This suggests that the police have prevented two terror plots over the past month, one Islamist and one far-right.

Mr Basu went on to say: “Despite the increases, right-wing terrorism remains a relatively small percentage of our overall demand” and that the biggest threat facing the country still came from jihadists.

Radical Islamic terrorism remains a significant problem across Europe, as well. Last week it was revealed that authorities in France had arrested a man for plotting a September 11th style hijacking, according to Le Parisien. The attack was foiled “just before” a Muslim man stabbed four people to death in an attack at the Paris police headquarters.

France’s interior minister, Christophe Castaner, said that the foiled September 11th style attack was the 60th terrorist plot that had been foiled by French police since 2013.

A report earlier this year, the ‘Black and White Book of Terrorism in Europe’, found that radical Islam accounted for 91 per cent of all European terror victims. The report found that between 2000 and 2018, a total of 753 people have been killed in terror attacks in the European Union.

The United Kingdom’s domestic counter-intelligence agency MI5 lists the current threat level of a terrorist attack as ‘severe’, meaning that an attack is ‘highly likely’.”

“Iran’s semi-official news agency says Iranian authorities have arrested 15 men and women at a mixed-gender party at the Iranian island of Qeshm. Such gatherings are illegal under Iran’s Islamic-based law.

Sunday’s Tasnim report said the raid happened on a beach on the Persian Gulf island, but didn’t provide further details on those arrested.

It said the arrests happened a few days ago.

Iranian law bans Muslims from drinking alcohol or holding mixed-gender parties when the men and women are not related.”

  9. Once again Muslim honour killings in German-speaking countries: A Turk murders mother and baby+++
On this Sunday, shortly before 9 a.m., the alleged perpetrator dialed the emergency number himself. He had murdered his family. A large number of police officers rushed to the reported address. There was a shocking picture. A 31-year-old man, who according to the newspaper “heute” is said to have a Turkish migrant background, had stabbed his wife and child. His second child survived, but is equally likely to have been seriously injured. The crime took place in a row house in the street Kalman-Gasse in Kottingbrunn, Lower Austria. There, the alleged perpetrator had murdered his 23-year-old wife and a toddler at the age of 2 with numerous stab wounds. The stab wounds and cuts were so severe that medical help was no longer possible. Apparently the family father wanted to suffocate the little son, who is only 11 months old. He survived the crime, but is said to have had severe respiratory problems. The 31-year-old Turkish-born was arrested on site by the police without any resistance. The background of the terrible honour killings is to be clarified within the next hours and days. The presumed perpetrator is to make a confession.

  10. Hong Kong protests: Police fire tear gas after clashing with protestors in Tsim Sha Tsui

    • About 41% of the global population are under 24. And they’re angry…

From Hong Kong to Chile, young people are rising up to fight injustice and inequality. Their elders should be grateful

A spate of large-scale street protests around the world, from Chile and Hong Kong to Lebanon and Barcelona, is fuelling a search for common denominators and collective causes. Are we entering a new age of global revolution? Or is it foolish to try to link anger in India over the price of onions to pro-democracy demonstrations in Russia?

Each country’s protests differ in detail. But recent upheavals do appear to share one key factor: youth. In most cases, younger people are at the forefront of calls for change. The uprising that unexpectedly swept away Sudan’s ancien regime this year was essentially generational in nature.

In one sense, this is unsurprising. Wordsworth expressed the eternal appeal of revolt for the young in The Prelude, a poem applauding the French Revolution. “Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very Heaven!” he declared. Wordsworth was 19 years old when the Bastille was stormed.

Yet while younger people, in any era, are predisposed to shake up the established order, extreme demographic, social and political imbalances are intensifying present-day pressures. It is as if the unprecedented environmental traumas experienced by the natural world are being matched by similarly exceptional stresses in human society.

      https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/26/young-people-predisposed-shake-up-established-order-protest

      • It is leftist but there are some facts in there, the main reason many of the people are raising up in protest and revolution is because they are sick of being held down by Marxist inspired governments and want freedom Or they are worried (in some cases very worried) about the Marxist take over of their home city or nation and don’t want to lose the freedom they are use to.

        • There’s also a contagion, copy-cat effect. “Be part of the drama!”
Pictures, videos, and peer-group reactions all over the world. Instantly shared, dramatic (and sometimes fake) news.

          • That is why the CCP is trying to keep the Hong Kong and othr protests from becoming common knowledge in Mainland China.

  12. WhatsApp in the Arab world: an essential but controversial tool

Nicosia (AFP) – From organising mass protests in Baghdad and Beirut to coordinating rescue missions amid grinding conflict in Syria, WhatsApp has become an indispensable connector for millions across the Arab world.

In Lebanon, where telecommunications are highly regulated and expensive, citizens have increasingly relied on WhatsApp for free calls.

When the government announced a tax on these calls on October 17, it sparked protests that grew to an unprecedented scale.

After more than a week of demonstrations, protesters have rejected the term “WhatsApp revolution”, saying the phrase diminishes what is a demand for drastic political change.

But they acknowledge the technology is instrumental in mobilising rallies that have attracted hundreds of thousands from a population of about six million.

Trump says ‘very big’: Unconfirmed reports ISIS leader Baghdadi killed in northwestern Syria
    By J.E. Dyer October 27, 2019

This event is getting the full article treatment because it was heralded by a cryptic tweet from President Trump a short time ago.

The something big, if we go by a report Newsweek just put out, is that ISIS founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in the last few hours in a U.S. special forces action in Idlib province in northwestern Syria.

    ……………………….

The something big, if we go by a report Newsweek just put out, is that ISIS founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in the last few hours in a U.S. special forces action in Idlib province in northwestern Syria.

Trending: New nude photos of Rep. Katie Hill released that show off her Nazi-era tattoo

There are some immediate oddities in that. First, many analysts consider the likelihood low that Baghdadi was actually in Idlib province. (As Newsweek reported, the Russians have sworn he’s not.) Although there is a concentration left there of Sunni opposition forces, in enclaves defying the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian backers, ISIS has not been thought to have an organized or effective presence there for some time.

Frankly, that makes it more likely in my mind, not less, that Baghdadi could have been hiding out there. He wouldn’t want to be where there’s a known ISIS presence. That would just attract undesirable attention.

But the other oddity on a quicklook is that U.S. special forces went into Idlib to execute this operation. There were reports from locals circulating on Twitter earlier that U.S. forces had entered for an apparent operation of some kind; seemingly, a short-lived tactical action. And it’s not unprecedented. But we don’t wander Idlib unimpeded. That’s Assad/Russia territory, being held – still on an active combat basis – by their forces against the remnants of rebel forces.

The question would be who stood aside for us to do this, assuming the reporting is true. Candidates are Russia [pretty certain; see UPDATE 2 below] and Turkey (less likely, as Turkey’s geographic reach in Idlib is much more limited and contingent on Russian sufferance).

At the moment, it’s all a whole lot of speculation. Baghdadi has been thought to be somewhere in Syria or Iraq [see UPDATE reporting Barisha, Syria, below], although his health reportedly hasn’t been good (a consequence of multiple attempts to kill him in the last few years). He last issued an audio update to his followers on 16 September.

A clue from an analytical observation about that speech may in fact have indicated Baghdadi was in Idlib. The Diyaruna report quotes the analyst, Wael Abdul-Muttalib, as saying “al-Baghdadi appeared to be trying to win over other extremist elements or open lines of dialogue with elements of al-Qaeda and al-Nusra Front, which now makes up the core of Tahrir al-Sham.”

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is the main group now still mounting a Sunni rebel front in Idlib, and is largely composed of the one-time al-Nusra Front. The wording of Baghdadi’s last audio update may thus have been a clue on a couple of matters: where he was, and where he thought ISIS’s future might lie — i.e., in a loose alliance with Tahrir al-Sham.

The BBC map, added in haste, is from June and now a bit outdated. Its utility is mainly to demonstrate the general area in Idlib where Baghdadi might have been, and what potential access points would have been for U.S. special forces. Assuming the tacit agreement for the operation came from Russia, the dark orange would be the starting place. (If we helo’d in and out, it sure looks like we would have done it from Turkey, right across the border to the west.)

UPDATE: A new tweet in the last hour indicates the location of the special forces op was Barisha. The map has been updated to show its location. See the tweet below for video of some of the reported damage in the aftermath.

UPDATE 2: Al Arabiya reports Iran has acknowledged being informed of Baghdadi’s death. That would indicate it occurred on the territory patrolled by Assad and Russia, with the communication to Iran coming from the Assad regime; i.e., at the military or diplomatic level in Damascus.

Perhaps it’s moot now. Multiple sources have indicated there will be an announcement Sunday morning. Until then, there’s little point in further speculation.

There is a significant point worth making now, however. ISIS has been an experiment and an example of territorial terrorism: the quest to consolidate territory under a jihadi flag, rather than just hop from one place to the next blowing things up. I doubt we’ve seen the last of the ISIS-type approach. But what we’ve seen at this point is how investing in territory is very costly for a group like ISIS.

Unlike al-Qaeda, ISIS now has thousands of “fighters” and their family members being held in prisons and special camps. That’s a form of organized defeat and exhaustion of options that al-Qaeda can’t be affected by.

The reason for pointing this out is that the ISIS model makes it harder to recover from the death of the leader. Where al-Qaeda would just pick a new one and keep moving, ISIS has stopped moving, at least in Syria and Iraq. ISIS is kettled up in holding pens now, and probably leaderless. The force and its animating purpose have no fallback – no driving concept of a next step. Al-Qaeda can always just start planning a new attack, if the infrastructure that was setting up the last one is interdicted.

Can ISIS offshoots in other places – Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, the Philippines – emerge in a centralized leadership role and retool? Syria had a very distinct apocalyptic significance for ISIS from the beginning; at some point, the group cannot remain “ISIS” if it has no vision for getting back to Syria. But there is far less prospect of that now than there was of enlarging a caliphate-driven “ISIS” from central and northern Iraq and eastern Syria, back in 2013.

Tahrir al-Sham has taken over the “Sham” portfolio, to an extent. ISIS never meant “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria”; it always meant “Islamic State of Iraq and al-SHAM.” An ISIS without Baghdadi has lost position to claim dibs on being the defender or re-conqueror of al-Sham – the land of “the left hand,” defined 1300-odd years ago, when one is facing the rising sun in Mecca. “Sham” is the central purpose of ISIS; Sham, with theological significance going back to Abraham or before, is where the events of the Sunni apocalypse are supposed to unfold.

But the core composition of Tahrir al-Sham is itinerant jihadis, not territorial administrators in the manner Baghdadi conceived of. The momentum for ISIS-like magic-caliphating has bled away. That leaves on the stage the already existing nation-states with radical, caliphate-seeking rulers – and with restive, divided peoples. It leaves Iran and Turkey.

If Baghdadi is confirmed dead, this may indeed be a very big thing that just happened.

  14. Baghdadi Is Dead. Should We Brace for ISIS 2.0?

ISIS leader and self-styled calif Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead. During a raid by U.S. Special Operations forces on a compound in northern Syria where Baghdadi was hiding out, Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and three of his children he had dragged into a dead-end tunnel where he was cornered by U.S. special forces and their attack dogs.

U.S. President Trump gave details of the two-hour raid in a speech to the nation at 9:30 am EST, in which he praised the U.S. forces as the best in the world.

“Last night was a great night for the United States and the world,” the president said. “The world is a much safer place.”

Trump described how U.S. special forces — none of whom were hurt or killed in the operation — secured the compound, removing 11 children from harm’s way and chasing Baghdadi into a tunnel in the compound.

The president named Baghdadi as a “vicious and violent man who died in a vicious and violent way.” He also called him a coward, saying he spent his last moments terrified “screaming, crying and whimpering.”

The president recalled some of the more barbaric acts of ISIS — from the beheadings of U.S. journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff to the burning alive of the Jordanian pilot in a metal cage to the death of American aid worker Kayla Mueller, who Baghdadi repeatedly raped and eventually killed.

Last weekend, NBC News reported that the Justice Department’s probe into the origins of the Russia collusion investigation is now focusing on the CIA and the intelligence community. NBC News soft-peddled this significant development by giving former CIA Director John Brennan a platform (a pen?) to call the probe “bizarre,” and question “the legal basis for” the investigation. Politico soon joined the spin effort, branding the investigation Attorney General William Barr assigned to Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham “Trump’s vengeance.”

However, if the media reports are true, and Barr and Durham have turned their focus to Brennan and the intelligence community, it is not a matter of vengeance; it is a matter of connecting the dots in congressional testimony and reports, leaks, and media spin, and facts exposed during the three years of panting about supposed Russia collusion. And it all started with Brennan.

That’s not how the story went, o

Middle East Eye: Twitter executive for Middle East is British Army ‘psyops’ soldier
    Middle East Eye (9/30/19)

A recent investigation from independent news outlet Middle East Eye (9/30/19) uncovered that a senior Twitter executive is, in fact, an officer in the British Army’s 77th Brigade, a unit dedicated to psychological operations (psyops), propaganda and online warfare. Gordon MacMillan, who joined the social media company in 2013, is its head of editorial for the Middle East and North Africa. While both Twitter and the British Army attempted to distance themselves from the implications of the report, it is unclear why MacMillan would have this role if not to manipulate and propagandize the public. (The British Ministry of Defense describes psyops as a way of getting “the enemy, or other target audience, to think and act in a way which will be to our advantage”—BBC, 6/20/08.)

For media so committed to covering news of foreign interference with US public opinion online (see FAIR.org, 8/24/16, 12/13/17, 7/27/18), the response was distinctly muted. The story did not appear at all in the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News or virtually any other mainstream national outlet. In fact, the only corporate US outlet of any note covering the news that a person deciding what you see in your Twitter feed is a foreign psyops officer was Newsweek, which published a detailed analysis from Tareq Haddad (10/1/19). When asked by FAIR why he believed this was, Haddad agreed it was major news, but downplayed the idea of media malevolence, suggesting that because it was a small British outlet breaking news involving a British officer, US media may have overlooked it.

Yet the bombshell was also largely downplayed in the UK press as well, with only the Independent, (9/30/19), the London Times (10/2/19) and the Financial Times (9/30/19) producing reports on the news, bland and even-toned as they were. There was no other reporting of it in the national press, including in the BBC or the Guardian, the latter having already “gotten rid of everyone who seemed to cover the security services and military in an adversarial way,” according to one current employee.

    • independent news outlet Middle East Eye…
Middle East Eye is NOT just any old indie outlet.

Qatar’s Other Covert Media Arm [2017]

If Al Jazeera English isn’t Qatar’s main means to influence the Western media environment beyond serving to obfuscate the truth about Al Jazeera, then, what is? Here, Middle East Eye (MEE) – an increasingly prominent web portal – often obscures its finances, but it increasingly fills the gap as Qatar’s chief agent of influence. Groups like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International incorporate MEE stories, as do newspapers like the New York Times and the Washington Post.

Delving into the details of MEE, however, show that it acts far less as a traditional journalistic outlet and far more as an English-language front for Qatari-supported groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. British corporate records, for example, show that Jamal Awn Jamal Bessasso, a former official for both Al Jazeera in Qatar and the Hamas-affiliated al-Quds TV in Lebanon, owns and operates MEE through M.E.E. Ltd.…
      [much more detail]

Long ago, political radicals and terrorists discovered that – so long as they called themselves human rights activists -journalists, other human rights activists, and even diplomats would accept their polemics at face value. It seems that the Qatari government and its Hamas and MB networks have discovered the same principle applies to news outlets and portals. Al Jazeera may be the most prominent example, but it seems that Al Jazeera’s managers now seek to seed other networks as well, and that Qatari funds mandate an agenda.

      https://www.aei.org/foreign-and-defense-policy/middle-east/qatars-other-covert-media-arm/

      • Middle East Eye has grown much more powerful since the article above was written.

Think of the Khashoggi Affair – an attempt to take down the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. MEE was the critical node for disseminating storylines from Turkey [Muslim Brotherhood, Inc.] to media allies in the West. It was packaged for OUR consumption, to harm both the Saudis and our President.

PTrump came into office intent on firming our traditional Mideast alliances. MbS was chosen as the symbol for our beautiful new relationship. The former impresario of the Miss Universe pageant sold us this Golden Boy so he could go about the business of Commander in Chief. We’d be favorably disposed to pro-Saudi policies… such a fine young man at the helm!

Well, the Crown Prince is what he is. A spoiled tardish autocrat with little experience of life outside the Sandbox. It was a tactical error to promote him as a Hollywood heartthrob. A fantasy is a fragile vessel; a real life beduin chieftain is not The Sheik of Araby. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sheik_of_Araby

His enemies – and PTrump’s – were primed to hit. They set up a perfectly ordinary extraordinary rendition (by tardish standards, never overly dainty) to make a heinous monster of the Golden Boy.

Middle East Eye took the lead directly from Turkish intelligence. Then, in perfect sync relayed it to their partner, the most virulent anti-Trump Washington Post. Khashoggi had some sketchy connection to the Bezos-CIA rag. “Dissident Journalist” hits all the high notes for their target audience.

The way it played out – in sensational, gory, evidence-free detail – is a case study of an information operation. It’s fascinating as presented by the Security Studies Organization:

FBI Entrapped Flynn With Manipulated Evidence As Clapper Allegedly Issued ‘Kill Shot’ Order: Court Docs

A bombshell court filing from Michael Flynn’s new legal team alleges that FBI agents altered a ‘302’ form – the official record of the former national security adviser’s interview – that resulted in the DOJ charging him with lying to investigators.

Early last week Flynn attorney Sidney Powell filed a sealed reply to federal prosecutors’ claims that they have satisfied their requirements for turning over evidence in the case. A minimally redacted copy of the reply brief was made public late last week, revealing the plot to destroy Flynn, as reported by The Federalist’s Margot Cleveland.

According to the 37-page motion, a team of “high-ranking FBI officials orchestrated an ambush-interview of the new president’s National Security Advisor, not for the purpose of discovering any evidence of criminal activity—they already had tapes of all the relevant conversations about which they questioned Mr. Flynn—but for the purpose of trapping him into making statements they could allege as false.”

At the heart of the matter is the 302 form ‘documenting’ an FBI interview in which Flynn was asked about his conversations with former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Powell alleges that FBI lawyer Lisa Page edited her lover Peter Strzok’s account of the interview – texting him, “I made your edits.”

Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) continues to pay tens of thousands of dollars from her campaign’s coffers to her daughter for running a slate mailer operation while other debts remain untouched, filings show.

Waters’s campaign committee disbursed $56,000 to the congresswoman’s daughter Karen during the third quarter, according to the committee’s most recent filings. The committee’s payment to Karen reduced some of the accrued debt owed to her for running a slate mailer, or endorsement mailer, operation for the campaign.

At the end of 2018, the campaign reported being $183,000 in the red to Karen. Since that time, it has steadily chipped away at the debt, bringing the amount currently owed down to $52,000. As Waters has continued to pay her daughter from her campaign’s coffers, other committee debts have remained untouched.

The committee still maintains a debt of $300 for a security guard and $600 for a sound system at a Christmas party that first appeared on her post-general report from last year. Other debts, such as an American Airlines travel expense of $719.60, were racked up between April 1 and May 16, 2012, filings show. That debt still appears on Waters’s most recent FEC filings. Various congressional FCU Visa card purchases totaling $3,506, which first appeared on her April 2008 quarterly report, remain unpaid.

  24. Daesh Reportedly Names Its New Leader Following US Operation to Eliminate Baghdadi (sputniknews, Oct 27, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201910271077162738-daesh-reportedly-names-its-new-leader-following-us-operation-to-eliminate-baghdadi/

“On 27 October, US President Donald Trump confirmed media reports that the Daesh* terrorist group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, died as a result of the US Special Forces operation in Syria’s Idlib province.

Daesh has named a successor to Baghdadi following the US operation in Syria, Newsweek reported.

Abdullah Qardash (a.k.a. Hajji Abdullah al-Afari), who was earlier nominated by Baghdadi to run the group’s “Muslim affairs,” is set to take over Baghdadi’s position, according to the report.

Little is known about Qardash, other than he is a former Iraqi military officer who once served under late leader Saddam Hussein, the report says.

Daesh leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was reported dead after US military conducted a Special Operations raid in Syria’s Idlib province. The reports were confirmed by US President Donald Trump Sunday morning. Baghdadi reportedly died after detonating a suicide vest following a chase by US servicemen.

According to unnamed regional intelligence official, Baghdadi’s role as Daesh leader was already largely symbolic by the time of his death.

“Baghdadi was a figurehead. He was not involved in operations or day-to-day,” the official said, according to Newsweek. “All Baghdadi did was say yes or no—no planning.”

*Daesh, also known as ISIS or ISIL, is a terrorist organization outlawed in Russia.”

  25. BREITBART – WATCH: Canadian Professor Lost Her Job for Telling the Truth About ‘Endangered’ Polar Bears

A Canadian university has frozen a zoologist out of her adjunct professor post as punishment for saying the unsayable about polar bears: that populations are thriving; that they are not endangered; that stories about how they are being caused to starve by melting summer sea ice are junk science #FakeNews.

Dr Susan Crockford is one of the world’s leading experts on polar bears and had held her post as Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada for 15 years.

But by speaking the truth about polar bears she fell foul of environmental activists who have long treated Ursus maritimus as one of the poster children for their “the Earth is doomed and it’s all our fault” narrative. As a result, without explanation, Crockford was ousted from her position at the university.

  26. 8 Migrants Found in Refrigerator Truck Heading to UK – Report (sputniknews, Oct 27, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201910271077162762-8-migrants-found-in-refrigerator-truck-heading-to-uk–report/

“The report comes in the wake of 39 dead bodies discovered in another truck in UK’s Essex. This time, the people were still alive.

Eight migrants from Afghanistan were discovered in a refrigerator truck heading to the UK during an inspection in a French port, the Parisien reported Sunday, citing the Boulogne-sur-Mer’s prosecutor’s office.

The migrants were found in a state of mild hypothermia and transported to a hospital in Calais.

The migrants were reportedly hidden in a double bottom of the refrigerator compartment with the door locked from the outside. It was about 7 degrees Celsius inside, authorities said. The truck drew suspicions from the customs officers because it did not contain merchandise.

Earlier this week, 39 corpses were found in a locked refrigerator truck in UK’s Essex. A coroner will perform an examination of all the victims to determine the cause of death, according to The New York Times, but suffocation in the airtight compartment and/or severe hypothermia because of automatic refrigerator equipment are believed to be the most probable reasons.”
